The ratel frowned at the big round chunk of metal. They'd tried offering it to eight different people of various shapes and sizes already, but no one had wanted it. No one had even been remotely interested in it, despite the fact that it was clearly made by two-leggers. It was black, round and very, very heavy.

"Stupid thing!" Uligo muttered, kicking it. Then he grunted in pain as he bruised his foot on the useless item.

Defodio was slightly more optimistic than Uligo but it was, for the most part, to balance out (and show up) his bluer brother. He was pacing on his stubby little things, thinking back on all the trade attempts that had failed so far.

"We need to find someone different," he said, looking back to Uligo as he kicked their treasure, "Someone who collects things and will have something we want. We haven't asked any birds yet."

Worst case scenario, maybe they could get a snack out of it. Birds were very good for helping find honey, for example.

The lion was stalking through the thick undergrowth, making the effort to move as quietly as possible. He had no plans for this journey, but he certainly wouldn't object if an opportunity materialized on the way. The red lion paused at the sound of voices. They were high pitched and somewhat soft, perhaps belonging to smaller creatures.

Knurren headed towards the voices, carefully, as silently as possible. Through a gap in the branches, he could see them, a pair of ratels. His eyes narrowed, good and bad, as he saw that there was something else with them. A two-legger object!

The lion craned his neck around so that he could look at Sufuria with his good eye, trusting her to be just behind him as always. She should have some input on this situation.

Sufuria knew when something was up. As soon as Knurren hesitated, she fell into place behind him while he considered it but she was already on her way to his side when he glanced back to her, brushing against him affectionately along the way, always staying on his good side. Her movements were nearly as quiet as her partner's- a conscious effort on her part.

She was silent as she watched the ratels, making no more noise than was necessary to start out. They had something very interesting with them, something too perfect to be naturally occurring. That meant either a deity or a human and both made it a tempting object to possess. The only problem was ratels could be vicious, even if the two of them had size and strength on their side. Still! Too interesting to pass up this opportunity.

So she glanced back to Knurren, nodding to show she was interested.

Uligo made a face. Birds, in his experience and opinion, were flakey featherbrains, not entirely trustworthy. Wings just seemed to go straight to people's heads.

"I dunno...I don't like dealing with birds if we don't have to," he worried aloud. "Maybe if we ranged farther afield we could find someone more interested?"

"Maybe if we shined it up, we'd attract a bird that just had to have it," Defodio returned, looking back at the item in question critically, trying to determine if this was as physically attractive as it got. No, they probably would have to focus on it's mental attractiveness.

"We may have to search farther to find anybody with any brains," he grumbled in agreement, "Nobody appreciates curiosities around here."

So, Sufuria was game for this as well? Good. Knurren had seen things like this before, usually where two-leggers preyed on other two-leggers. It was an item of subservience. The lion started moving again, backtracking and changing his angle so that they could come upon the pair from a more obvious direction.

As the lion walked, he moved his mouth close to the white lioness' ear.

"Buyers," he murmured, letter her know the approach he felt would work best initially.

Smiling, Sufuria nodded when Knurren named the game they would play and followed along after him. She stayed close by but behind him. Even if she stayed back, her white fur would be more likely to be noticed- and when that happened, it was usually in their best interest for it to draw attention to Knurren. And that was the way she would approach this unless he prompted her to go first, she was happy to follow his lead.

Uligo nosed the object. His muzzle moved some of the lingering dirt around, but didn't noticeably change the reflectivity of the stupid thing. The ratel made as if to kick it again, but stopped just short, remember what had happened the last time.

"I don't think we could shine it up even if we spent three days working on it," he muttered disgustedly. "And we could spend those three days more productively if we went out looking for someone who'd want it."

Defodio chuckled at the way Uligo stopped short on kicking it, relieving some of his own frustration in a less violent (but more irritating) way. But it was better than both being violent, he supposed.

"So it's settled, then," he said, "We'll widen our search. It's not like someone is just going to appear out of the trees as say they want it."

Well, that was as good a cue as any. Knurren had reached a good point from which to approach the ratels and he allowed his paws to come down heavily, making a great deal of noise. Pushing through the bushes, he came to a stop not too far from the small creatures.

"Well, howdy!" the lion called out in a false accent that he kept in practice just for moments like this. "I couldn't help but notice you have a fine whatchamacallit thar! Me an' the missus, well, we couldn't help but be interested!"

Sufuria stayed in her spot following behind Knurren until he mentioned her, taking that as her cue to draw up beside him. She put on a sweet smile that suited her a little too well, even batting her eyes to each ratel in greeting before looking to the treasure they were here to discuss.

"I've never seen anything like it!" she said, her own gentle, proper voice a strong contrast to her mate's, "Wherever did you find such a fascinating treasure?"

The blue ratel nearly jumped out of his fur at the sudden loud voice from the forest. His eyes got very, very round and Uligo stared at the unexpected lion. Lions. There were two large lions standing in front of him and his brother, looking at them expectantly. And talking, in their big, deep voices.

"Um..." the ratel swallowed nervously. "Um, we found it in the stream. We're not sure what it is and you really want it?"

Lions! They were lions, big vicious meateaters and they were talking to him and Defodio about the object!

Defodio jumped when a loud, oddly accented greeting was shouted their way. His feet barely hit the ground again before he put himself protectively between the treasure and the direction the voice came from. Only then did he turn and see what they really faced. Two lions, one much scruffier than the other, admiring their unusual item.

"What do you mean by 'interested'?" he asked suspiciously. Were they just curious about what it was, like the pair of ratels, or were they interested in trading for it-- or stealing it? They were being nice enough but if it came down to it, he doubted him and Uligo could take on a pair of lions.

The big lion smiled genially, making sure that his lips covered his fangs. No need to scare the little creatures off just yet. Still, how best to set the darker one at ease without betraying himself?

"Well, it's jest that you dun see so many thingamajiggies like that out here, an' me an' the missus think it'd look great in our den," Knurren assured the ratel.

No need to hint yet that they didn't trade. At least, not in material objects.
