There was a slight drizzle in the air. Nyomi pulled closer the hood of her cloak that was identical to her mothers to shield her body form the rain. She stood on a patch of grass under a tree, keeping her white sleeves away from the mud. Not like there was much chance of keeping them pure white much longer. Already there were stains here and there from her following her family around. Mostly the stains were red, darkened now with time. And not just from her own body.
Her family believed in taking the pain of others and tattooing it onto the chosen one to carry it away. Nyomi believed in sharing that pain. It was not fair, to her, to watch her family suffer so while everyone else got their happy ending. For their was so much pain in the Kuze name. From the two mares with her losing both their lovers to her dead family stuck wandering the Manor as ghosts. With no way to end their curse.
Maybe that was the cure to her problem. Find some sap to break the curse for her. They were sure to die form the Tattoo Curse or the Manor or Reika. The third was the reason Nyomi never attempted it herself. She knew the quest would require her to go down to the Abyss, where the bodies of all the Priestesses lay.
Including Reika's, the only one awake. For Reika's body was not unbound from that which held it to the floor of the Chamber. To be that close to a physical body that could end her life with one touch was too much for the young mare to handle.
She'd also have to pass the spot the Handmaidens were killed. See the blood of the sister she never knew but who helped her in the Manor spread across the floor of the Abyss. That, too, would be too much.
So Nyomi stayed in the Manor part, never opening the doors to the original Kuze Shrine that lay nestled between the Manor that was built around it to contain the Unleashing. She watched over the Manor, keeping everything in order for the time some brave souls wished to embark on the quest to end their suffering.
After that...Nyomi wasn't sure. Would the two living Kuzes pass onto the next world with the rest of their family or be allowed to live a normal live? The ruins of the Manor still stood somewhere. Perhaps they would build it back up and continue their practice of helping others with their pain.
But that life had never brought anyone happiness.

it was day, though you could hardly tell as the clouds got thicker and thicker, the slight drizzle broke into a pouring Rain as the sky opened up the tattooed priestess Nyomi feared emerged from the main shrine, the sky cried, cried for those who had been lost, she could feel the drenching rain on her back soaking her and her clothes, her mane and tail drenched the bloody cloth covering what had been her eyes, she was the only one awake, she couldn't sleep, she didn't want to, he could't see, she didn't want to, she didn't want to remember. She just wanted to see him, just once more Amane had granted her wish before... no, she didn't want to remember.
Kyouka had saved Reika from the rift, and pulled her from the chamber of thorns though she still seldom left the manor and the shrine but she had from time to time when her pain became too great and she was close to remembering what it was she didn't want to remember that's how it was when you were alone with your thoughts for a long time unable to sleep.
Someone was there Reika turned her head in the direction of the presence she sensed, underneath a tree, she couldn't see knew they were there, she felt like Amane one of Kyouka's daughters, was Amane still alive? the familiar presence made Reika feel at ease if even a little bit Amane had been her only friend during the ritual even more so than the other handmaidens, it had been her voice she listened to when the three of them had sung for her.
"Amane?" the cursed mare called quietly rather confused and lost.

Nyomi was still thinking about the past she had not lived in, but was a part of when the very one she was afraid of came closer. The orange mare had heard the hoof falls through the rain, keeping one ear pinned back to where the cursed ones were in case they needed something. Being the only sane one-in what her current family considered sane-Nyomi didn't mind fetching things for the two. They were almost like foals. Forgetting where they were at times. Forgetting who she was. Stuck in their past and pain. Sometimes her mother would even start panicking at nothing, like she was seeing something before her eyes only she could see. There was never anything there. No shadow of a ghost. Just her memories haunting her. That was worse. A ghost could be escaped. A memory couldn't.
Remaining where she stood, the orange Star turned her head towards the approach of the familiar Reika. There was a small tightening of fear in her heart at the sight of the Tattoo Priestess, combined with one of pity and guilt. Even though her touch was fatal, Reika should not be something feared. Like a terrible beast who roamed the forest which you needed to pass. It was not her fault she turned into a monster. No living member of the Kuze family was truly bad. Not even herself. They all had their own pain to endure that made them that way. Feared and hunted beasts of the night.
"Priestess..." Nyomi answered back softly, but loud enough to carry through the rain. The name of her sister brought pain to her heart and tears to her eyes. She tried to hide this, thankful for the rain making streaks down her face anyway. "It's cold out here." She made no move to correct her, figuring Reika was currently stuck in some memories. She didn't want to burst the memory like a bubble and risk making Reika panic at some less kind memories flooding back. Unfortunately, she doubted she could manage to do that. Nyomi was not Amane. She may not have known her sister, but she knew enough from her mother and her sister's ghost to know the two of them were completely different. Amane seemed so full of life, even in death. Nyomi was so bitter towards the world.

Amane, she'd missed the handmaiden but she'd seen her in the mansion not long ago, how had she gotten out, but the familiarity she sensed from the mare she'd mistaken for her was undeniable so much so she didn't even notice the color "Aname... it is always cold..." ever since that time, she couldn't remember exactly what, she didn't want to remember she had plucked her own eyes out to forget the sight she'd seen, at least that's what she though she did, everything was so foggy, but she was afraid of the fog lifting and remembering her loss... her heart ached, it ached more than she could ever explain.
Reika moved toward Nyomi slowly still dazed where was she again? She had a thought and lost it... She was out side the mansion of sleep. she Flicked her ear back causing the echo earring to move with it, Reika turned her head as though she heard something, she took a step toward it away from Nyomi before sadly looking away...
Who's voice was that, the one she wanted to hear?
"Amane," Reika turned back to Nyomi, ah it wasn't Amane the form she though she'd seen melted back into the orange mare as the rain seemed to wash away the illusion "Nyomi..." Reika tried to give a painful smile.

Nyomi turned her head away, finding it difficult to continue to look upon the other mare for much longer. It was always difficult to be around her for a long period of time. The younger always became anxious and nervous. The tattoos that shimmered on her body as she walked told so many tales of the sorrows and pain of the creatures who had wished to be free of them. Reika was still young herself, no older than Nyomi, at least in body, but the tattoos made her seem so much older. How she must have matured so quickly as the pain of others joined with her own being so it was now hers and hers alone. All the lost loves. The grief for the deceased. The stress over job promotions. The guilt over sinful deeds. All within the tattoos. Whether she went back to sleep or not, she would forever be an idol for having survived at all.
At least with no eyes, there was not fear of them entering her eyes anymore and causing more damage.
"Even my own mother doesn't seem to know my name," Nyomi couldn't help responding bitterly. At least not the waking version. Since the candles, Kyouka was becoming more aware of her visitors without the constant fear of all those hostile ghosts. It was nice to finally be able to have a conversation with her mother, like a normal mother and daughter would. She had waited so long for the chance.
Sighing, the orange mare turned back to the Priestess, pulling the cloak from her shoulders to toss over Reika. "It's going to rain soon and become colder. You should go back inside."

"Aname told me," Aname was her only link to most things at least until lately but she'd still been to frightened to go out and see the world as it was now, she was still too lost, so in the chamber she remained for a long, long time. She wasn't even sure why she'd left it now, what was she seeking? Would she find it outside?
She found herself gazing through the rain, hoping someone would come from it, why did you leave me alone? she didn't even realize she'd thought it, until a great longing welled up in her chest, she wanted to cry, and scream, but no tears would come, they'd dried up long ago, but from what she couldn't remember anymore, and she didn't want to, she tried to force back her feelings, her own voice chimed in her mind, like a distant memory of something she's said, in her ghost state...
'I want to see you again...' whispered the faded memory
Pulled from her own memories Reika shivered when Nyomi placed the cloak over Reika, as though some warmth had crept back into the cold mare. She was thankful Nyomi was here or else she might remember what she'd been trying to forget the echo earring dangled beside her cheek.
"Thank you Nyomi," the mare spoke softly "you're right," she said looking back to the mansion before looking back at Nyomi. "you must forgive Kyouka... it isn't her fault..."

The eyes of the orange mare went back to studying the world around her. The quiet world, as it should be. No interruptions. No one to pester her. Just her and her duty.
At length, Reika spoke, again. Not taking her eyes off a small creature huddled in a bush from the rain, Nyomi listened intently. She knew she shouldn't grudge her mother the loss of her mind, but it was difficult. To do so much for the shrine and Manor and be forgotten in the process.
To be forgotten was still no easy thing. Even if she couldn't hate her mother too much for doing so.
Looking back to the tattooed mare, Nyomi's facial expression softened. So mad she could be at the rest of the world. But to Reika and her mother she couldn't bare it.
"I suppose heartbreak right at the point of death is hard to let go," the orange mare mused out loud, not really caring who heard it. She couldn't say she understood it. Nyomi still thought it was about time her mother let it go. Even in life, she harbored those same feelings for so many years. As many as Reika was old at the time of death. Had Akito really been that special? Was it truly possible to find so great a match for yourself in just one other being?
Sighing, Nyomi looked away, again. "I know," was all she said before going silent.
