The sky painted in rubies and citrines on the horizon as the sun chased the deep onyx into sapphires. A sharp wind buffeted the scraggly trees and stirred the soft powdered snow where it lay in a thin layer on the granite mountain face.

Cladina felt her skin tremble where it wasn't thickened over her front legs. Her short mane tousled in the lighter breeze that still whipped between the large boulders she worked her way between. It was almost too early to be out and venturing the mountain hazards. But if she wanted to be down at the field in the valley for the first rays of sun to touch the late autumn flowers, she needed to go now.

Carefully working her way amongst loose rocks that could turn an unwary ankle, Cladina hummed tunelessly to herself. She loved to watch the flowers turn towards the sun, the petals unfurling with the newness of morning. There were very few flowers left this time of year. The light snow that had fallen last night heralding the winter that would turn the valley into a snowy paradise also echoed the end of the flowers.

Just once more, and she hoped that the flowers had survived the frost. Cladina knew that in the lower climbs, down from the mountain, the cold did not come as quickly. She knew there would still be flowers towards the south. Her mother had told her of places where the flowers bloomed all year long. But it was such a long way and her family was here.

A few rocks rolled underhoof and Cladina paused, her humming stopping as she worked to steady herself. If Iroxide had been here, he would have warned her, in his strange and silent manner, before she was in danger. But the lizard was slowed in the cold. And he was, as always, loyal to her father.

Cladina hoped to one day find a friend for herself like Iroxide. Though . . . maybe a bird. Someone colorful and adventurous who would share her love of flowers.

She didn't bother hoping to find a stallion. To find love. She had done the equations. That her parents had found each other was statistically unlikely. Her own odds, particularly given her odd appearance . . . hope would only hurt in the end.

It was a crisp morning, another winter shifting on into place. Birds were flying away and fleeing to warmer areas if not settling down to brace for the cold. Other Critters were preparing for the cold as well. Little monsters liked to hibernate through the cold days. One little monster didn't hibernate though. Bright Blue bright enough to startle any on looker into awareness. His pelt said "Hello" I am right HERE!" It then led to his bright yellow and orange spots.

The baby monster wasn't much of a baby but his size made him a smaller monster than the rest. He was much more chipper than the monsters he talked to. No one ever seemed to see his friends but they were there. As was his favorite friend was furry with tusks like a troll and curled horns that wrapped back around his ears and a spiked club on his tail.

Timothy Todd was humming along and occasionally sounds beyond the humming giving a distinct sound to his song. It was an early morning. With a pep in his step he was ready to take on the day. Something stirred in the air. He knew their was a change a foot. Signs of snow over the mountains looked exciting. Timothy Todd was determined to go and view some. This was the cause for his sure fire path up a mountain trail. He had waited since the winter before to be able to see snow and he was tired of waiting.

Cladina startled as she heard humming and the sounds of hoof falls approaching. The rocks that bounced out from under her unwary step began to roll down the path. Worry that the stones would cause harm to whoever she had heard overcame her normal reticence at speaking to strangers.

"Ware the path!" Cladina calls out, hoping to give warning. She knows from experience that each rock will likely knock loose a few more to go tumbling down before they find a level area that stops them.

With a bit more haste than she would normally use, Cladina tries to hurry down. Though she gave warning, it might not have been in time. She would be to blame if another came to harm from the rock fall. She needed to be there to help if such was the case.

Sorry I haven't had the chance to respond before now. I've been struggling to do responses while I've had limited internet connectivity.

"Bee ba da boo"
"Ba dah dah do"
"Dip dip dah dum"

Timothy Todd heard a faint sound of tumbling ahead of him. He wasn't quite sure he was hearing correctly but then heard something that he understood beyond the sound of tumbling rocks. It sounded like beware the path. That meant rocks were indeed tumbling down the path. His gaze skirted around the pathway the tumbling sounds grew and he shifted as close as he could to the edge farthest from sound of the rocks. He would soon see where the rocks landed.

He watched as a few rocks passed by and the tumbling seemed to cease. He frowned at them. It had sounded like there would have been more but there weren't. He shrugged and then began to continue on his way. He was curious as to who had called out the warning."Ho there!" Curiosity underfoot he wasn't much paying attention to what else was underfoot, before he knew it his hooves were slipping under him. He had missed the rock tumble but hadn't missed other loss rocks. Before he knew it all of his hooves were out from under him and he landed with an oomf.

Cladina was accustomed to this path. She had been traveling it daily for the last few months, so she was able to quickly navigate it. She slid a few times as she hurried, but having had rocks tumbling out from underhoof more than once taught one how to avoid falling.

At the call of greeting, Cladina slowed with a grateful sigh. The stranger sounded well enough. But she was much nearer, he must be just around the bend at the boulder. Taking a more cautious pace, she heard the sound of rocks rolling and the umph of a fall.

Wincing, she carefully moved around the boulder that blocked her vision of the path below her. Blinking, Cladina takes a moment to notice the blue and yellow of the male usdia sprawled on the path. Her desire to help overcoming her normal reserve, she moved to his side.

"Oh, oh no. Are you injured? Shall I fetch aid?" She awkwardly moves around him, looking for damage. That he seemed to be comprised of patchwork that looked stitched together was something she filed in the back of her mind. Whatever the cause, it didn't seem to be bleeding or recent.

Timothy Todd frowned at his new position upon the ground. His friend who had once been upon his rump was sprawled in a heap not far rubbing its head and making a frowning face. He made different clicking sounds explaining his displeasure.

He shook his head trying to clear it. Sharp pains of the rocks underneath him helped him to clear the fog that had enveloped his mind upon falling. He began to hear hoof falls approaching and he knew it wouldn’t be long before he would be found. At least there wouldn’t be any hiding that he had fallen. He glanced up to see an usdia mare with dark forelegs made her way to him. Thankfully his hearing wasn’t impaired because he heard all the worlds that she had to say. “Ima be o’right. Jus gotz ta get up.” His little friend made some clicking sounds before climbing up upon his rear just to wait for Timothy Todd to right himself.

Timothy Todd glanced back at his friend checking to see if he was okay and was pleased to see the little monster fine and just tussled up. He sighed a small sigh of relief that he was fine and then made way to try and right himself. He then looked back to the mare. “Ima try in right myself.” He grinned and chuckled to himself as he moved to get his feet underway. One foot after another the way he went about it the loose rocks moved away from his hooves so he wouldn’t have a problem with slipping again unless he decided to move.

Cladina blinked as she tried to understand the strange stallion's manner of speech. After a moment she puzzled it out, just as he started shifting his feet to get solid footing.

"Oh, yes. Of course." Cladina moved so that she way down slope from him. She set herself so that if he started slipping, she could brace him, prepared to give assistance if it seemed needed.

Timothy Todd grinned having successfully if even only temporarily righted himself on the loose rocks. 'A wee bit of a note. Avoid loose rocks' He moved away from the rocks carefully placing one hoof on the ground before moving the next. When he had finally moved of the bulk of the loose rocks he turned to his rump companion. His little friend was curled back up and watching him with wide eyes. The creature then turn toward the mare and made a series of clicking sounds.

If the mare could hear the sounds or not Timothy did not know but he listened aptly to what his friend was saying. He nodded every now and then to show he was listening before. He then turned to the mare and smiled. "Me friend and I thank ya for ya gracious warnin'. He said also that he likes ya eyes, they glow like his mum's" He nodded curtly before looking around at where his walk had gotten him.

His tail flicked to the side and he looked back at the mare."So what haz ya up round these parts this morn?"

Cladina struggled to understand the stallion. "I'm sorry, I didn't know you had a friend. Is your friend okay? Where is he . . . she? Um . . . My eyes are like my father's rune tracks. Um . . . they just . . . it's good for seeing in the cave."

She looks around a bit awkwardly, still having problems with that last sentence. "I . . . I'm having a hard time understanding your speech and idioms. Could you repeat that for me?" Cladina was trying to be polite. She didn't have much opportunity to interact with others so she wasn't sure if she was doing it correctly.

Trying to save the situation she gives a big, if belated grin. "Um . . . I'm Cladina Stellaris, by the way. Though everyone just calls me Cladina."

Timothy Todd nodded. So she was better off in a cave than he was. He was hopeless in a cave to say the least but his friend was excellent at getting him through dark situations. "Oocha ya! He's fine jus got his feather in a ruffle so's ta speak. He's all fur and no feathers ya know. Buh he be right here." He gestured his head to his rump where the small creature watched the mare avidly.

He turned back to the mare listening more about how she had a hard time understanding what he had just said. He frowned slightly thinking on how he could resay what he said in another way. Then suddenly his face grew bright with a smile as if he had figured it out. "What ya doin up here?" It was simple enough and it kept some of the more complicated words out of the way he thought it was the perfect solution.

Then there was her name It was a mouthful if you said the whole thing but she had given him a shorter way to say it. "Well Cladina, I am Timothy Todd and my companion here is Sindelar Cremaler Expigeous The Fourth but he goes by Mal." He continued his bright but lopsided grin.

Cladina blinks. She's still struggling with his accent and manner of speaking. But . . . his companion . . .

"I'm sorry, ah Timothy Todd . . . um . . . I . . . Is your friend . . . Mal? Is . . . I can't see him. Um . . ." Her brow furrowed as she looks for something that was 'all fur and feathers' and on the mini stallion's rump. While a yellow paw-print was evident, that was the only evidence she could see of any companion.

Utterly distracted by looking for the creature, Cladina forgets to answer his question. Even if she was able to understand what he was asking this time.
