User Image Amaltheia had hardly caught a wink of sleep all night. Excitement coursing through her body, she had tossed and turned until finally light broke the blanket of darkness in the sky above. She knew her father's patrol could cover all kinds of hours, sometimes it was early morning running through till late in the day and sometimes he was out in twilight. Stretching out her front legs, a squeak of a yawn parted her lips. She shook her petite frame, hoping to rid the sleep from the still slumbering limbs.

Today she would ask her father if she could spend the day out with him. She was curious to what he did out in the woodland all day. He protected them from predators and made sure they were all safe. He was so brave. The thought made her smile sweeten. She quietly stepped away from the nesting grounds and wandered out in to the open plain to seek him out, switching her head left and right to help spy his whereabouts. She hoped she wasn't too late, or had the time wrong. A small frown fumbled across her expression as she stood waiting, watching.

Feeling he may of left already, she took haste to chase in to the dim lit forest. She was yet to see the forest in the early morning. Darkness wasn't safe, hunters were at their best, taking pride in the stealth it provided. She kept low, sticking to the cover of bushes till the sound of lapping water filled her ears. It was a welcomed sound, so calm and peaceful compared the spine chilling silence, not even the birds had woken only a stray cricket cried out.

It wasn't far, she pondered whether she could make it to the stream safely. Her father was probably there quenching his thirst, this she nodded at. Filling herself with hope, yet to give up on the request she had in mind she made a quick bolt in the direction of the water supply.

Kenton finished giving directions to the few others who were patrolling with him. each was assigned to go a different direction and scout out the boarders. it was a routine thing that he was used to leading. as the protector of the herd it was his duty to keep everyone safe. this also included being over the patrols, trainings, and scouting. he was as high up in the herd you could go, besides the alpha. but seeing as the herd was currently alpha-less, well, that left Kenton in charge.

he watched as the last of the scouts disappeared into the forest. he turned himself to leave, but decided to make a quick pit stop at the river. he carefully maneuvered through the underbrush, his nimble hooves hardly making a sound. the river was crisp in the morning, crisp but refreshing. he took a few sips and then was about to head off to the meadows, but something stopped him.

He listened carefully, his head held high, ears swiveling around to catch the direction of the sound. it was almost as if something was running towards him, but it was not quiet like a hunter, nor was it large. to his surprise he watched as Amaltheia came out of the forest. what on earth was she doing up so earlie, and away from the herd none the less.

He called to her and then walked over. his voice was not angry nor harsh, rather it was curious, but stern. "My little one, its a bit early to be out and about dont you think?"

User Image When Amaltheia broke through the last bush that seperated she and the stream, her gaze glistened with joy. Thankfully her father was stood there and at the fact her assumption had been successful, the filly let out a squeak of happiness. She hadn't thought for one moment that because she had been out on her own and open to danger that he may not of agreed with her actions, having been so motivated by the thought of spending the day with him.

She skipped his way to meet him in the middle, full of relief to see him. Although as he spoke, her head carefully dipped, ears flattened in to the bush that cushioned them. The realisation sinking in. "I'm sorry daddy. I wanted to spend the day with you but I missed you leaving." She paused, glancing guiltily up at him with her green orbs, shuffling from one front hoof to the other. "I got carried away..."

Now aware of her actions and glad that he hadn't raised his voice, a more attentive smile licked at her lips - grasping the opportunity to ask if she could go with him. "Would it be okay if I came out with you today? I'll stay close, I promise! I was just curious to what your duty asks of you." Her voice always held a soft tone only varying with one of excitement, but still kept that touch about it. She was still trying to find what she could do to help out with the herd and by seeing what everyone else had to do she had hoped would help her find her own calling as well.

Kenton looked into those bright green eyes. It was odd that, even though she looked so different, he could tell without a doubt that this foal was his daughter. He smiled at her and gave her a gentle nuzzle. “Of course you can come along, but you must understand. Going on patrol is more than just a romp through the fields.” she gave her a little side smile. If she was going to come along then he was going to put her to work.

“you need to know what to look for. I want you to close your eyes for a moment and listen. Listen to the woods and the trees. Listen to how quiet they are. Now I want you to feel. Do you feel that this quiet is a contempt one. If there was danger in the woods, then you would be able to hear the hushed sound of animals in hiding, and you would be able to feel the tension in the air.” he took his breath and gave her a moment to listen. “while we are out I want you to tell me if you can feel the difference.”

With that he turned and started to walk up the stream. For now they would follow it, and once Amaltheia got used to his pace, then he would head into the deep woods. It had been a while since the deeper woods had been checked. It was dense and dark in there, and most of the herd stayed clear of it, but it was good to check every once and a while just to be safe.

User Image Amaltheia kept her gaze on her father, a warm smile appearing at his loving touch, gently burrowing in to it she then nodded at his words. She knew that it wouldn't be a job to be taken lightly, it was their safety that was at risk if one single, small detail was missed. At the order to close her eyes, she did so, standing in the essence of nature's whispers growing louder as her other senses gradually became more alert at the loss of her sight.

He was right. So early in the morning, silence made itself a known presence. Far off she could hear the flapping of birds wings beating casually through the air, then fading in to a soar. The calm breeze as it rustled the leaves of surrounding tree's and the collision of clattering branches. The swift and scattered pitter patter of small animals paws scampering across the terrain. Her ears found a twitch at every distinctive sound that entered them and feeling happy that she had caught the general gist of how the forest sounded when it was content and free of the tention whilst in danger, she breathed an equally content sigh. Opening her eyes slowly to let go of the more concentrated sounds to focus once more on the figure of her father before her as he set off to set pace upstream.

"Okay, I think I understand." She chuckled brightly. Trying not to follow with a distracting skip in her step she narrowed her eyebrows and set one hoof in front of the other to a walk, doing her best to make her little legs move as fast as they could. It was hard to maneuver her stride to follow the larger ones that he took but by putting the effort in to do her best to keep up she hoped it would develop without having to think too much about it. Catching up to his side, she kept her eyes on the path a head of them curious to where they were going. "Do you follow the same path every day?"

"No", He thought for a moment on how best to explain it. “The herd territory is devided up into several different sections. When you patrol you run the edges of your assigned section, and the middle. So you go up one side and down the middle, then up the other side and down the middle. Each patrol shift you are assigned a different section, that way you never too complacent with your section. There are also three times we run patrols. One early in the morning, like we are doing now. One as the sun is high in the sky, and the last when the moon is high.”

They had reached the turn off point. Kenton turned into the deeper woods. “ the most important and most dangerous patrol is the night run. Only the bravest and strongest are selected to to go on those.” Kenton wondered how much Cali had told them. Well now was not the time to bring it up, so he just smiled at Amaltheia and then picked up his pace. He was hoping to get back in time to be able to join his family for grazing. That and he was sure that Calixte would have his head for actually letting Amaltheia go with him. It would be better if they got back before she woke up. Its easier to ask forgiveness than permission.

User Image She listened very carefully to her father. One day she may be required to take the said route on patrol, so it was easier to learn now rather than later what it required. Bobbing her head, it made sense to have a rhythmic pattern to it. That way every part was checked and double checked regularly. "At least your not alone whilst working..."

She looked around slowly as they entered the deeper part of the forest. It was unusually darker in these parts, somewhere she had never seen before. It must of been the most dangerous area. "The most bravest? You must go on night watch?" She asked, a small frown appearing.

She wasn't fond of the idea of him being in danger but he was one of the strongest and bravest and she knew it was his job, everybody looked up to and respected him for what he did for the herd, but couldn't help but worry over the possibilities of what could go wrong. Not only for him but the others who went on patrol as well.

"How often do you find danger?" Her hushed tone spoke a thousand words, unsure whether she really wanted to know the answer but also wanting to be brave for him too. Mummy must be this worried all the time, she thought, shaking her head gently to herself.

Her eyes wandered to the side to spy one of the shadows beside them, it kept swaying docilely beside a tree trunk distracting her momentarily before she turned her gaze back to the path before them. Ama found herself keeping close to her fathers side, any closer and she may of been underneath him in hiding. Shoulder brushing against his legs. She felt safer stuck to his side like that, it was as if nobody could harm them that way, that the forest couldn't reach out and guide whatever was creeping in it's depths towards them.

Kenton found his daughters concern almost amusing, and adorable at the same time. he himself had faced many dangers in his life time, most of which people could only dream of. he was strong though, and would never burden another with his personal horror story. Cali was the only one who knew what he had been through and he wanted to keep it that way. Ama was walking rather close to him, not that it was a bother, but it showed him that she was slightly frightened. that was good, for fear is what keeps one alive. if you are to brave you throw yourself into trouble, and if you are cocky then trouble finds you.

"Don't worry dear, im used to danger, and danger is used to me. we do not go on patrols to look for danger, rather we go out to show those who wish us harm that we are vigilant and prepared to fight if we have to." he gave a nod to affirm his statement. they moved deeper into the woods, and despite the sun slowly rising, it was getting darker around them. Kenton paused for a moment to let Amaltheia catch her breath, and to partly catch his own. "here, close your eyes and listen again. what does the forest tell you?"

User Image It was hard to fathom the idea that anyone wanted to hurt them. They lived peacefully, out of the way, in their own space. Finding ways to stay alive like collecting food, baby sitters who looked after them whilst their parents followed the line of duty they had been set, responsibilities to keep them active and content within the herd life. She twisted her head to the side, eyes directing upwards to her fathers tall stature;blinking in the oblivious unknown state to what danger actually lurked around the corner.

"It's sad others wish to harm us..." Ama broke a weak smile at her thoughts and the wise words her father spoke. "Daddy is strong. Will show those meanies that being awful to others is wrong." She nodded, certain of this. When he halted in their tracks, Ama felt the shifting of weight urge back and followed suit of his actions. Ears falling back. Her eyes darted side to side in wonder if he had spotted something out of the ordinary, heart beat rapidly increasing.

Then he told her to listen to the forest once more. Swallowing the forming knot in her throat, she hesitantly did so. Only noticing now that her breathing was heavy after keeping up to his strides as well as the anxiety caused by the abrupt stall. "Okay..." She breathed in deeply, then exhaled, pushing her focus back to the sounds of the forest and the feeling it was extending out to it's inhabitants.

It was quieter in the dense wood. No birds flew, only owls who's hoots cooed out in echo's in the distance. No scampering of animal claws roamed across the ground here, only ones of rushed scratching against the bark of tree's. Clambering away to hide once more. It felt as if the beings in this forest were hiding from something, warded away from the open. Should they be concerned too? Ama opened her eyes slowly, feeling unsettled. She didn't know whether it was her inner feelings of fright playing tricks on her mind or if this part of the forest always felt unnerving.

"Is it always this quiet and scary?" She asked quietly, dipping her head.

Kenton was not the best at the whole listening to the forest thing. but he understood the importance of teaching it to his children. to be honest he was kind of glad that Ama came with him. in fact, watching her sit there with her eyes closed, deep in concentration, gave him an idea. like a patrol they should also have listeners. but that was something to bring up with Cali later, now was not the time to get distracted on unimportant things.

"the forest is quiet today." he looked around a bit unsettled by his daughters remark. "Lets keep moving, i dont want to be in here any longer than we have to." Kenton began to move again, still heading deeper into the forest. soon they would hook back around. he did not want to be out long with Ama. normally he would have gone all the way to the edge of the forest, but that would be far to long of a treck for Ama.

User Image Amaltheia shuffled uncomfortably as her father spoke, circling one hoof across the dirt as her nerves flared up. She nodded in agreement and leaped forward to catch up with his hurried pace. It seemed as though her opinion had worried him, if something was to happen whilst she was out with him, then chances were that she would slow him down or distract him.

She gulped, her little eyes rolling in all directions as they continued on keeping watch for anything unusual that may of come towards them or might of been hiding in the bushes, watching them. That was a possibility, she thought, lowering her head as she crept by her fathers side. As they continued on and found the bend they were going to take, Ama felt tired. She hadn't noticed this until her legs started to ache, having been distracted by the teachings.

She was young and was yet to build stamina and be trained for combat which would ultimately help her on these long days out but for now it was nice just being with family. The nerves calmed and she was happy to be by her fathers side, simply enjoying watching the tree tops sway and the shadows twist and turn beside them. She let out a squeak of a yawn, chopping her lips together as a small smile came to them.

"Does Daddy ever get tired whilst out on duty?" She asked, attention wandering briefly as a colourful butterfly floated past her mane. She thought she heard a small growl or a hum behind her. Ears flickering and eyes directing to the side, when she didn't see anything she shook her head to dismiss the thought.

Must of been because she was tired, yes, that must of been it.

"I have been on many patrols, and even before i was the Protector of the herd i ran patrols for another herd, so i have had lots of time to get used to long runs." Kenton stopped abruptly. he had heard something, but was not sure due to the fact that he had heard it at the same time that Ama started talking. all of his nerves where on edge. was there really something in the forest, or was he just jumpy because he did not want anything to happen while he had Amaltheia with him? there were many animals in these deep forests, wolfs, large cats, sometimes even bears, but naturally Kenton's mind jumped to the worst possible situation. in his mind came clearly the image of that hell beast...the black catwalker. a knot formed in his chest like a stone, if that beast was here now, well he did not even want to imagen. fighting it off would not be the problem, the problem would be having his daughter witness him killing at such a young age. but he shook his head to clear it. "sorry, i thought i heard something, lets keep moving. be alert though."
PostPosted: Wed Dec 26, 2012 3:12 pm

User Image "I heard it too, but I didn't see anything..." She whispered. Amaltheia had no problem doing what she was told, she kept getting that eerie feeling that an unwelcome presence was almost on top of them but each time it made a visit it left just as quickly as it came. Assuming that it was just due to the fact that this was her first time strolling outside of the main herdland or the outskirts of the forest. What caught her immediate attention was something her father had revealed. He was once part of another herd?

How surprising. Ama couldn't imagine their lives being any different than it was right now. With her mother and father watching over all their children. "You used to patrol for another herd?" This had a chain reaction, Ama all curious couldn't stop the questions from rolling off her tongue. It was exciting to learn of new things, especially from her parents.

"What were they like? Were they nice, was the land beautiful? Could it be as dangerous as these parts?" She had to stop and catch her breath but whilst she sucked in the air, her mind went searched for more questions and she twisted her head to look wide eyed at her father. She should let him answer, then she could ask more. Talking so much was distracting her from the dangers that she believed were stalking them. The paranoia being kicked to one side for the moment.

She truly was an attentive little foal. To have picked out the fact that he had lived with others before the herd that Ama knew was impressive. Not only that, but here she was question after question rolling off of her tongue. The truth was, Kenton did not really know how to answer. He wasent sure if he was ready for his precious little girls to know of his past. Not even his older children knew, not even his first child knew. Does Ama even know that he had children that live outside of the herd? How much do his little girls know? If Ama was sharp enough to pick up on the fact that he had lived elsewhere then surely she was sharp enough to have connected other dots in his life. Well it was best to play it safe. He would have to watch what he said in the future.

“Well you know that me and your mother started our herd together right? We started it because we wanted to protect the ways of the deer folk, or the Cerynei. There used to be a whole forest that was far away from these lands. The forest was created for the purpose of sheltering the Cerynei. They lived and thrived there. The trees were tall and thick and old. It was an enchanted place. It was in that forest that I was born. My herd was a well rooted herd that followed the rule of the Forest Prince. I served under him as one of the many Deer Folk who watched the edges of the forest.” he took a quick moment to decide how to make the next part seem not as sad and terrible as it really was. “we patroled the edges of the forest to watch for anything that would enter and cause us harm, but we never expected the trouble to come from the forest itself. The forest was supposed to protect us, but we had to leave.” here he stopped his feet and turned to Ama. “I traveled and found your mother and she fell in love with the stories of my heritage and together we decided to build a new herd that would follow all the customs and beleifs of the old Cerynei herds in the forest. So you can imagen that the people from my old herd are much like the people that we live with now because we all believe in the same things.” he smiled at her. He was curious to see what she would do with what he had just said.
