Name: Thrarothar(Th’thar)
Age: 17 Turns
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Hetero
Craft/Rank: Apprentice woodcarver/Candidate
History:
Thrarothar comes from a long, distinguished line of wood workers that have served in Namor Hold for ten generations. He was named after his great-grandfather and grandfather on his father’s side. His family has always expected great works from him. They have been very strict in his upbringing. Often pushing him to conform to their ideals; this mainly consists of upholding the family honor and becoming a woodworker.
He has one younger brother, who is 14 Turns. Though his brother is also learning woodworking, Thrarothar bears the brunt of their parent’s attention and ambition. He received his first carving kit at 10 Turns. With a Turn of instruction under his belt, his parents began entering him into Youth Carving Competitions every Turn. They insisted on always having samples of his work in their stall when he reached his teens to show prospective buyers.
For Thrarothar it got worse. During his 17th Turn a bride was picked for him from another woodcarving family. He has never met meet her as her family lived easily two sevendays travel away. Several times he had written her, and by her response he was unsure if she’s happy about the arrangement. They were to be wed within the next two Turns.
Thrarothar has had a serious rivalry with a young boy named Muburine. He was never quite sure why it happened, except it started when he was 11 Turns. Coming around a corner, holding a small carving to show his parents, he collided with a boy carrying a small, lopsided cake. The cake ended up over both of them, and the carving broke when he dropped it. Since then he felt the need to always surpass the younger boy even though they are not in the same fields. More often than not, he feels that he comes out victorious in these impromptu competitions.
Until the Searchdragon showed up at the Hold. He arrived at the field in time to hear the rider proclaim Muburine had the right to be a candidate. His jaw nearly hit the ground. Thrarothar couldn’t believe the younger boy had been picked before him. He walked right up to rider with a challenge in his eyes. It soothed his soul somewhat when the rider said he could also be a candidate. His eyes instinctively found his rival’s. Let Muburine be a candidate first. He had to get a better dragon color than him! He had to Impress first!
When Malvren Weyr was overthrown he fled with the rest of the riders and those loyal to them to Trine.
Description:
Thrarothar’s parents insisted he be dressed as best as he could be to keep up appearance. Now he continues it with a certain pride; wearing the best fabrics and leathers he can afford. Even his ‘work’ clothes have a certain flare that makes second rate fabrics look nice. He dresses in warm browns and reds when not at work. At work he wears a leather apron to protect himself and clothes from slivers.
He stands 4’11” with a ‘straight as an arrow’ back. Posture being extremely important to his family, and he was always reminded not to slouch. Even now, except when carving the biggest pieces, he keeps his back as straight as possible. His hair is a light auburn and his eyes are dark brown. Thrarothar is quite tanned from spending so much time outside carving, and keeps his hair trimmed short. His hands have calluses from long hours holding tools and wood.
Personality:
Since a young boy he has had manors and responsibility drilled into him by his parents. They insist he act mature beyond his age to impress clients. Though he slightly resents this Thrarothar takes pride in impressing adults with his maturity. The rivalry he has with Muburine is a private matter, and he tries to keep it just between them. Should it be found out and questioned, he plays it off as something to keep him on toes. He is making up for some of his lost childhood in a form that he knows. He didn’t get to play as much as the other children during his young teen Turns. Thus he now finds it hard to play; thinking of it as a waste of time. He doesn’t understand why others find it so fun. Having lots of free time allows him to focus upon his work. Thrarothar is diligent in a task since he knows he doesn’t get paid until the work is finished.
He has spent many Turns perfecting his skills at analyzing a commission quickly. His goal: to make decisive responses that won’t get him into trouble by promising more than he can deliver. This is a skill that he has discovered works in many factions of his life. Thrarothar often takes responsibility for a project after he’s determined that it is within his capabilities to do well. That being said, he knows the only way to be sure a project is done right is to do it himself. He hates having to ask for help as often the other person(s) have their own ideas how it should be done. There can be no questions of it being done correctly and on time if he himself is doing it.
Some things just shouldn’t change. The seasons for one, and Thread returning as a big second. Thrarothar rejects big changes in his life. Stoutly refusing to admit something has changed until his face is rubbed in it. “It can’t be winter yet.” “The falling snow is heavy on the ground, its winter.” He’ll grumble and complain, but finally admit it. A near tragedy early in his life has left him with a fear of deep water. Thrarothar will come up with any excuse to stay out of it. He doesn’t know how to swim, and will not go into water deeper than his hips.
Thrarothar has a definite competitive nature; due mainly to being entered often into competitions. He wants to be better than that random guy over there. Most often his competitiveness comes out with other woodworkers. The sole exception to this is Muburine. As he got older his motto became anything to win. Thrarothar is not above a little judicial cheating. So long as he’s not caught at it, what is the harm? Should that fail, he becomes aggressive. He cunningly employs intimidation to get his opponents to back down.
There is a stiff, long-standing rivalry between himself and Muburine. Thrarothar cannot explain why he feels the rivalry is there, except that he can’t let it go. Every time he comes into contact with the younger boy there has to be a contest. Big or small it doesn’t matter. Muburine is the only one however he won’t try to cheat against.
Other: Thrarothar’s sole reason for going to the Weyr is his rivalry with Muburine. His parents expressed their disproval at his choice to enter candidacy. However, they are willing to let him fail so he can return full of determination for the craft he was meant for.
