Kyn hadn't told anyone she was pregnant yet and it had been a few days now since she found out. She didn't know how to tell Tony and trying to break it to him gently took a lot of planning. Once she figured out how she chose a when and asked him to giver her Friday night just for them. She shoved Harmony out of the house and would bribe Nathan if she had to in order to get some privacy.
Then she went to work in the kitchen, stopping every so often when the smells overwhelmed her. There was a hint in the meal, a sort of lead in she hoped to use: steamed baby carrots, baby back ribs, new baby potatoes. It might be too subtle for him to catch onto at first but maybe when she said it loud he'd catch the common vein.
Or she'd have to explain it to him. Kyndall was nearly shaking with nerves, waiting for him to come home from work. She couldn't even have a glass of wine to calm herself, another telltale sign that she was expecting. This meant buying a new house and preparing to be in charge of another life not even six months into their marriage. Were they ready?
Dinner was laid out, keeping warm. Candles were lit and soft music was playing. No chance of youma getting into their solidly locked house tonight. All she needed now was the love of her life.

Tony was not the best with subtle, but he did like home cooked meals. She was very good at cooking and he very much liked that. The house smelled very good when he came in and he chuckled.
"Hello, darling," he said, when he spotted her. He moved to her and gave her a kiss, though he was not sure why she was surprising him like this. Another try, after the miserable failure of last time? Though he rather enjoyed himself, even with a youma crashing the party.
He smiled at her and tilted his head, enjoying the smell of the food and immediately relaxing following his day at work.
"What's the occasion?" he asked, noting that Dogby wasn't in the room. She must have been hiding or stored in another room to keep her out of the way. She would be trying, unsuccessfully, to climb on counters if she were allowed out. Tony was being careful, not wanting to bring up their last date because he remembered how upset she had been.

Kyn smiled and handed him his own glass of scotch thinking if worse came down to it he might be grateful to have the liquor. It was accompanied by a kiss on the cheek and a sweet, but nervous, smile. She'd put Dogby away so they wouldn't be bothered by anyone or anything. She motioned to their dinner waiting on the dining room table and listed it by name, emphasizing the part she wanted to really sink in.
"I planned that menu especially."
None of the food really went together in a traditional sense except for the wording. Barbequed ribs called for cornbread and beans. Ah, well, it was what it was. There was no changing it now. She appreciated no mention of their last date and was glad he understood enough about her to think of avoiding it. She didn't want him to worry, though, and raised her eyes to his.
"There's no occasion, not really. Tony, don't you notice something about the meal, about me?"
How sick she'd been lately and how she avoided alcohol. The names of the foods they were about to eat? Though it was probably hard to notice the increase in sex drive since it was already high to begin with. That was a joy of being a passionate artsy type and having a husband willing to accommodate you.
"It might be time to get a bigger house..." That was about as unsubtle a hint as he was likely to get.

Tony frowned at her, and was certain he had seen something like this before. In a movie? But he had not been paying attention to the plot, clearly, because he just stared at his food for a long moment before he shook his head.
"I'm not much for cooking, Kyn, you know that. Is it something cultural or... something you grew up with?"
He ate eagerly, but paused when she mentioned getting a bigger house. He blinked and stared at her for a long moment, thn looked at the food. He seemed to be putting it together at this point.
"Kyndall..."
Tony was stunned and trying not to get ahead of himself. She had set all this up to tell him she was pregnant? He was not sure why she could not just tell him, but then maybe it was to keep him from panicking. It had not worked. He gripped his fork and knife and stared at her, wide eyed.
"Are you..."

"Tony, I'm pregnant."
No matter how many times she'd rehearsed those words in her head hearing them aloud made them sound strange and foreign. The echoed and then died into stunning silence. If it wasn't inside in the middle of winter they might have heard crickets chirping. Saying it out loud, though, was also a bit cathartic so she said it again.
"We're having a baby."
It was soon, too soon maybe, and with how stunned he was behaving it seemed her plan to ease him into it hadn't quite worked out. But she'd had a week to get used to it now. He'd only had a minute or two. It was only fair of her to sit quietly thereafter and let him catch up. Maybe she wasn't giving him enough credit. When the shock of it wore off he could be thrilled. Her husband had certainly never given her reason to believe he'd be angry or disappointed with her.
"Are you ok with that?"

Pregnant.
The word echoed around his head because absolutely nothing else was going on in there since hearing it. Every thought, every memory, every ability, everything he had ever learned had just fallen out of his mind, as if someone had cut a hole in the back of his head and it all drained out. He knew nothing else, and only draw a breath because his lungs were burning and his body knew better than to let him die.
He drew in a deep breath of air and looked at her again, blinking.
"You're pregnant."
He had never been able to experience being a father, not really. He was the father figure for a few of the young soldiers in the war, but only, he felt, because he was the oldest of the lot. He had Harmony and Nathan, but they were both too old for coddling and didn't need a father as much now that they were beginning their adult lives.
He had been an idiot in his youth, and missed his chance to raise a son. He had never known Nathan even existed. Now he was staring a chance to really experience it, and he could not figure out how to react.
Until, all at once, heat rushed through him and he felt like his chest had suddenly shrunk four sizes. His heart thundered against his rib cage and threatened to burst. He was out of his seat even before he was confident his legs would support him, and he let out a strange, unfamiliar sound as he swooped over to Kyndall and hauled her out of her seat. Spinning her, he laughed exuberantly.
"Pregnant! You're pregnant!"
He still hadn't learned words again, but they would come back to him in time.

Say something. Anything.
Time seemed to stretch onward as Kyndall sat tensely waiting for his answer. All of her own doubts that she had not given voice to or even permitted herself to think came rushing to the forefront of her mind to whisper bad things in her ear. "Oh God," it screamed. "Oh God, what if he's not happy? What if he didn't want to have a baby? He'll be nearly sixty by the time the child grows up what if it's too late?"
When he repeated her condition back to her it did little to assuage her fears but she nodded confirmation all the same. There wasn't any point in trying to deny it. For a few brief seconds she wanted to run from the table and hide. Only pride and love kept her there, promising that however he reacted she'd take his thoughts to heart.
Then all at once she was in his arms being swung around. Kyn laughed in sheer relief, panic ebbing as she basked in the warm glow of his love. All the fears crumbled to ash when she saw the happiness written on his face. His laughter was music to her ears.
"Yes, I'm pregnant." And her stomach reminded her of that. "Oh, Tony, be careful!"
She covered her mouth and bolted to the bathroom as soon as her feet touched the floor. She had not missed the queasy, achy, uncomfortable parts of being pregnant but it had been nearly eighteen years since she felt them so she could suffer. It just wasn't gonna be pleasant.
She was already feeling it as she sat numbly on the bathroom floor willing the feeling to pass.

"Whoops!"
Tony had not meant to make her sick, though he probably should have known better than to swing a newly pregnant woman around. She must not have been used to all the things going on in her, or something. He was a man, and not one that was particularly familiar with the ins and outs of pregnancy. So he took a mental note and then hurried to follow her.
"I'm sorry, my dear!"
He kneeled next to her and rubbed her back in an effort to soothe her. He smiled at her warmly, lovingly, the shock fading a bit and genuine happiness taking its place.
"I'll take care of you. Anything you need, I'll do it, I promise. Just tell me what to do. I've never done this before... but I really want to. I just worry that I'm too... that I've missed... ah... I just worry, I guess." And he would be doing a lot of that.

Just as he'd never had a pregnant wife before she'd never had a man who stayed in the picture while she was pregnant. In that regard they were on equal footing so when he came into the bathroom and started trying to comfort her in her moment of discomfort it was a very new feeling indeed. She closed her eyes as he rubber her back and nearly purred.
God, that actually worked! Who knew?
The feeling of that was only second to the beautiful words he was speaking, promising to stay by her side through thick and thin in this pregnancy. That, too, was a novel concept but she imagined trying to get through life with a second person to help her out would be easier than doing it on her own. He was pleased! That thought made her nearly dizzy with joy.
No, wait, that was actual dizziness and she was already sitting down.
"Remember those words when I'm swollen and sore, cranky and almost always tired. When I'm craving hot dogs at two in the morning. Or when you can't sleep cause I'm throwing up."
There were good things about pregnancy, too, but she wanted him to understand what he was getting himself into. It wasn't going to be easy but she could only assume it would be worth it. Part of her felt little flutters of excitement creep in. Kyn smiled as she got to her feet.
"Let's have the kids clean up dinner. Can we just cuddle a while?"

"I look forward to it. Well, not to you being sore and uncomfortable but... I mean. Looking after you. And. Uhm. Well. I am excited for all of this." He gave her a dopey look, awkward and babbling but that was just part of his nature.
He did not know what to do with all his nervous energy sometimes, and it came out in bursts of mostly incoherent, or barely strung together, babble.
She had to be used to that by now.
"I think cuddling is in order," he said with a nod, helping her up as she rose and staying near her. Because quite suddenly she was made of glass, and he was not going to take any risks with her. He carefully picked her up, not spinning her around this time, grinning as he carried her to the living room. They could curl up on the sofa and watch some TV.
And he could just keep her close. He very much wanted to do that.
