Do you think the lack of death in one piece, is what stops it making it big in the US/UK?

That is quite possible. But it also has to do with the quality of art at the beginning of the Manga that throws a few off. As I have been following it from the beginning, I grew with how well Oda improved and others do not appreciate it all that much. They are far too focused on the art being amazing, or having all your fanservice instead of being drawn in by the storyline itself.
In my opinion, I wondered about the lack of death, but Oda has given his explanation for that and it was a damn good one. Also, after seeing Impel Down. . . I believe that is far worse than death, and even more entertaining for the reader. I'd drather die than be sent to that prison! When Oda has a death, it is a important and meaningful, something to drive the plot forward and not just to please the sadisitic side of his fans.

Yeah I agree, also the lack of death actually made Ace's death more impact full.i don't actually cry at things like that but my throat actually went dry over it. Was so well done by Oda.

God. . . don't remind me of that one. I had to read that three times to fully realise that Oda just seriously killed off Ace. Honestly, that took some balls to kill of one of the most beloved characters of all time. And I sobbed like a ******** baby, you have no clue! I don't cry really, but damn that was unexpected and all i could say was: "SRSLY ODA! YOU NOW DECIDE TO KILL PPL IN THE PRESENT AND IT HAS TO BE ACE?! Y U DO THIS?!"
Then after my moment of saddened rage, lol, I appreciated how grand the scene was and how he died was very honorable. Never thought a death could top Bellemere's, but Ace managed to do that for me.

I don't think the lack of death makes the series any less popular really. One Piece is slowly gaining more of a fan base in the US/UK. The issue its going slow is because 4Kids got a hold of it first, and botched the series up completely.
The death's that do occur tend to be so heart breaking and touching. I mean, I cried for both Ace and Merry. Even re-reading it almost makes me tear up.

I think it started out too childish. That's what kept me from reading/watching right away. It got better quickly though. I saw the Allabasta arc and went back though.

I had to stop every two or three pages because i couldn't see through my tears. After I finished the book my eyes were so puffy i could barely see >_>

Ace's death is probably what made me start back into One Piece after cartoon network stopped showing it way back when. I actually decided to see what was new with the series and came across it. Ace being my favorite character at the time made it worse.
Just please Oda, don't kill off Law. xd

No seriously, I called it my "sad month" xD
Killing Ace added to the plot and it was a daring move considering how well liked he was. I doubt he'd kill Law off any time soon - he seems to be important for the future anyway!
