It had been a couple days since Rin last saw consciousness and as it stirred her, it brought with it a flood of sensations. Bright searing light overhead made opening her eyes difficult as every little shift of her body brought forth waves of throbbing pain. Slowly sound started to trickle back until it seemed to almost roar through her thoughts.

She was alive.
But alive was painful.

She whimpered softly to herself before sagging limply against the bed again. She was alive and awake - but at the same time almost wished for neither. Was anyone there? Byr? What happened? He was silent. Was she alone now? Was everything just a dream? Was she back at the... no. No. Please no.

A few days had felt like a lifetime. No you can't see her, she's resting was the phrase that blocked him at every turn. It had been serious, he could tell just by the grave demeanour of the often light hearted life hunters on duty at the infirmary. Injuries for hunters were more often than not, simply a chance to chill out in a bed for a while, easy to make fun of. Except this time they weren't joking.

When he was finally allowed in to see her, he didn't know what to expect, hovering uncertainly by the door for a while, scared to just open it and enter. He hadn't slept more than a few hours in two days, constantly dwelling on how it had been possible to ******** up so entirely. The last time he'd fought her she'd won.

Finally there was nothing to do but enter, pushing open the door he sidled into the room.

And then he froze.

He hadn't known what to expect, but in all his imaginings, this hadn't been one of them.

"R..Rin. You awake sis?"

She would hate him. She should hate him.

What had he done?

A familiar voice. She shifted slightly to try and see but flinched. She still knew it was him. Good. She wasn't back.... she didn't imagine it all. Wait - did he just call her sis?

"W..," she cringed, her voice sounded horrible and abrasively loud for her own ears to handle. "Will... what's?..," her thoughts immediately scattered. Where was she? Why was she here? What the ******** happened?

She drew a deep calming breath and turned her head carefully, determined to look at him. Why the ******** did something so simple hurt so much?

Her arm. Her ******** arm. He could hardly even talk. It felt like he was carrying a heavy lead ball in his gut. He tried not to let the shock show on his face as he moved over to the bed, pulling over a chair to sit on.

"My charge.. my charge went wrong. It broke your shield." he kept his voice as level as he could, determined not to upset her if he could avoid it. The last thing she needed was to realise before she was ready.

He clenched his hands together at his chest, wringing them anxiously, not able to help himself, even despite his best efforts. "You got hurt."

That sounded familiar. She'd almost forgotten they were ever dueling. They wanted to catch up right? It's okay though. She's in the infirmary. She'll be okay. She forced a smile to the fore as much as it pained her to, "It... it's okay... we can still get caught up here... right?" Every muscle in her face was screaming at her to relax and so she did, the smile drifting off.

"Man... you... you really kicked my a**... what the... the ******** was that man?..." she chalked it up to a true sun finally dawning.

It was agony, absolute emotional agony trying to find the words to say, he'd never been good with comforting words, he just didn't have experience with them. Words to wound and to hurt, sure, he spoke hatred fluently, but how did you say sorry for something like this. Was it even his place to tell her? The casual way she spoke to him, amicable, as if nothing had happened, as if things would ever be the same again, broke his heart. He found himself breathing quickly and shallowly, choked up as if by a lump in his throat.

"I don't realise my own strength." was all he could say, the words quiet and strained.

"I'm so ******** sorry."

Something was wrong. Rin couldn't put her finger on it but... he wasn't acting right. Where was the chummy cockiness she'd come to know and expect? Perhaps not love but it was better than... She stared up at him searchingly. She couldn't figure it out so conceded to asking, "...What's up?"

Rep met her gaze but it wasn't with the usual laid back smirk he usually did. He guessed ultimately it did fall to him, he couldn't imagine facing her later on when she realised if he hadn't told her while he was here, while he had the chance to apologise, to give her the chance to make him leave, if that was what she wanted.

"Rin. It's.... you aren't okay."

He pointed, his hand shaking the whole time.

"Your arm."

Rin looked. Then looked back at Rep. Then slowly back at her arm again... or lack of one. She froze while staring at the carefully wrapped bandages. Was this some sort of joke? She wasn't laughing. She started to turn her torso slightly with a soft grunt of exertion. It's just asleep. She just slept on it is all. That's right.

Nothing moved.

Okay. Keep calm Rin. Deep breath. Deeeeeeeep fuuuuucking breaaaaaathssss.

She shifted her body the other way. Ignoring all throbbing pain that threatened to cause unconsciousness again to free her right arm and reach around for her left. She patted the area. She kept patting the area. She tucked that hand under herself. Groped around under her side for it.

It just had to be here somewhere. It just HAD to be. There's... okay. Okay. Calm down. She's a hunter right? She could just... grow... a... Her hand finally found the small nub that remained; still wrapped in clean bandages. There wasn't any more blood... This... was it wasn't it?

Suddenly a sound Rin had never made before - not in front of Rep - burbled forth. She slid back against her bed with a wail of dismay. This was it. This was the end. There's no way. She's done for.

Rep didn't know what to say. He could only look on, helpless, absolutely helpless as she registered what he'd done to her. He spent all his life hurting other people, but he'd never wanted to her. Never her. Anyone but her. She meant so much to him, a friend he'd been willing to overlook gender for. She'd asked nothing of him but his companionship and he had given her this.

As she slumped back he held out a hand almost childishly, placing it on her leg, one of the unbandaged places. He tried to speak, tried to say no, it wasn't meant to be like this. He had just wanted to say hello, remind her how important she was to him, and it had turned out all wrong. Instead of words, all he managed was a strangled squeak, somewhere between a sob and distress. But he fought through it somehow, forcing the words out.

"..No..no Rin. I ..I..it's not..it's not as bad as it seems." It was as bad as it seemed and the words felt stupid as he got them out. But he had to say something, anything. She was life, she could keep going even with this setback, she wasn't a field hunter. She was tough, she could make it.

He wanted to protect the ones he loved, but in the end he always ended up being the worst thing to happen to them. He rested his chin on the bed, feeling boneless and worthless. "I'm sorry." He mouthed the words again, but even the second time, they didn't seem an more real.

Rin wasn't mad. She wasn't even really sad. She was shocked... she was terrified. This was it. She was going to die now wasn't she? What ******** good was a one-armed hunter?! She can't even ******** open bandages now!

She was trembling uncontrollably, pain both emotional and physical now - but she was also scared. Rep's attempts at comforting words were unheeded as thoughts raced in search of an out - any out. She couldn't immediately find one and her fear-filled gaze turned back on him, "A-are they going to put me down now?" Had you only come to say goodbye?
PostPosted: Mon Nov 12, 2012 10:08 am

He looked up at her from where his head rested on the bed like a scolded dog, as if staying cowed and submissive would somehow help.

"No. No. They won't. I won't let them." There was a grim edge to his words, hands balled into fists in his lap. "I mean, they wouldn't. You are.. You are a Life. You can keep going." If it was him, he'd be in trouble, deep trouble without an arm. A Sun who couldn't fight was a waste of resources, he'd be put down. It couldn't be the same for her. It just couldn't.

"They wouldn't have fixed you only to kill you."

"What good could I even do like this?" She flinched and drew in a quick sharp breath before relaxing again. She glanced up at the ceiling distantly. "I just. I can't even do life things like this," she frowned deeply, "I can't do normal people things either." She rested her arm across her chest just gently fiddling with the bandages.

"How will I... ..," and then her mind started listing off many things that she can;t see herself doing anymore. It stunned her into silence.

"You have two arms. Anything you could do with two, you can learn do with one." He assumed anyway. He'd never have considered any of this, even moments before he'd arrived. He thought Rin would just be a bit scuffed but mending. Not changed forever.

"Plenty of people get by with one arm, and you are a hunter, you have even more like, ability to get on with it." He sounded ridiculous, the guy who stole her arm away telling her yeah, sure it would be okay, no problem at all.

"Not... not helping okay. I.. I'm not a full person anymore. How would you feel?" she closed her eyes, there was the rage. The anger and frustration crawling beneath the surface, spreading. Like a dark plague of self-pity infecting everything inside it touched.

If she wasn't going to be put down outright, there was now still that... the fact is she was now a liability.
