((This is an elvish legend explaining the phases in the moon I have created for my story. Let me know what you think!))

Many years ago in a time long forgotten by mortal memory, there lived a clan of High elves, who housed their homes high in the treetops, out of reach of all other races. There they lived in isolation, hidden away from the world with only scouts and foragers traveling down the forest floor along with a few brave souls ready to risk the dangers they had been told in stories. Among the clan lived a young elven maiden, Illonerra, one of the more talented healers of the clan. She came from humble birth, her father but a craftsman but she still lead a happy and good life. One morning she ventured to the forest floor, as she did nearly every day. During her walk, she came across someone laying among the roots of the trees. It was a young man, a soldier, wounded and had passed out in the forest.

Illonerra was amazed. She had never before seen another race, having only been raised in isolation with elves. But she found herself afraid because of all the tales her clan would tell of other creatures. Yet she was still filled with curiosity and her heart got the better of her, feeling she could not leave the man to die in the forest. Illonerra closed his wounds and stayed with him till he woke that evening. When the young man saw her, he was awed by the sight of this elf.

"Fair maiden, what is your name?" he asked in a gravelly voice.

"Illonerra. And yours soldier?"

"Arren."

The elven woman helped the soldier to a den she had found beneath an old oak tree so he could recover his strength. There the two spoke of their lives amongst their people. Illonerra knew nothing of the outside world and Arren was curious about her own home. But it soon grew late and the elf was forced to return to her home in the trees. She left, promising him that she would come to him the next day. The pair spent the next four days together and on the fifth day Arren had to return to his people. He promised her that in four days time, he would return to see her.

He departed and Illonerra returned to her own people. And four days later, he returned and they spent more time together and then he stayed for four days. On that fifth day, he left again with the same promise. After a month of this, Arren returned with news that he would be leaving off to war again. Illonerra begged him not to go, to stay with her, but he told her he could not abandon his people. They stayed the night together and before day break, Arren plucked the moon from the sky and wove a chain of stars and presented it to his new love.

"I promise I will return for you. Wear this, when you fear I will never return."

He left then before dawn and Illonerra climbed to the highest tree in the forest to watch for him, wearing the new necklace he gave her and gazed out into the moonless night. Her love never returned and she never stopped waiting. She still watches and when the moon is full, it is because Illonerra is still hopeful that he will still return. And when the moon wanes, her hope is slipping away, fearing that she will never see her beloved Arren return. Until at last it slips from the sky when she picks it up and wears it around her neck, her eyes still on the horizon.
