Is music without lyrics haram? I like to listen to classical music and electronica, so I would like to know if this type of music is haram.
There are differences in opinion regarding music being haram or not, unfortunately I'm not able to comment on these since I haven't studied Islamic law. My husband, however, has studied Islamic law and if you'd like a better answer, inshaAllah, just pm me and I'll ask.
But basically, the things relating to music which are best avoided are things such as obsession, such as obsessing over a musician in the various ways possible or an obession with music to the point that you "can't live without it".
Regarding the lyrics, it is best for our ears to avoid listening to certains words and ideas.

With regards to playing an instrument or listening to music, for many reasons, it might be best to keep it something personal and to enjoy it privately and with your family.
and God knows best what is good for us.
I apologise for the lengthy answer, but this is for the reference of others also who might be interested.
I don't think it matters what kind of music you listen to, be it classical, rock, rap, etc, but I hope some of the things I've mentioned help us and others who consider them.
I don't think it's good to expose your weaknesses to other people; but that's just based on my experience of living with a pseudo-salafi niqabi woman with children and not being able to study because they would be blasting out from their room above mine music with extremely loud base and awful lyrics as well as them thumping and jumping and dancing around to it.
The most important thing is balance, there's times for listening to the Qur'an, and times for listening to other things, but if you cut yourself off suddenly or in extreme ways like this woman did, we naturally crave something more intensely to make up for the unbalance or the dramatic change to our lifestyle.
