the quran and hadith does not state that music are haram, we can listen to the music if we could get good moral or positive points but we should avoid the music if it just leads us to negative thinking/emotion state or do bad things (rebel against our parents, anger, lust).
Listening to quran are better as the reading of quran could:
~> remind us of Allah and His Greatness
~> could calm our feelings ( sometimes too calm til we fall asleep xp )
~> insyaallah that we will be rewarded by allah with pahala'
~> motivates us toward positive behavior
that's all from me, im sorry for any mistake in my statement and please correct my mistakes that im unaware of brothers and sisters. assalamualaikum

There are differing opinions on the subject, but even the most liberal approaches agree that music of questionable morality is strictly harram.

Is music without lyrics haram? I like to listen to classical music and electronica, so I would like to know if this type of music is haram.

There are differences in opinion regarding music being haram or not, unfortunately I'm not able to comment on these since I haven't studied Islamic law. My husband, however, has studied Islamic law and if you'd like a better answer, inshaAllah, just pm me and I'll ask.

But basically, the things relating to music which are best avoided are things such as obsession, such as obsessing over a musician in the various ways possible or an obession with music to the point that you "can't live without it".

Regarding the lyrics, it is best for our ears to avoid listening to certains words and ideas.

We must also take care of our bodies that God has provided us with, and you should also consider not listening to music so loud that it can have a damaging affect on our ears.

With regards to playing a musical instrument, there are also differences in opinion, but just ensure you are not becoming an "idol" or selling your image in a less than modest way.

With regards to playing an instrument or listening to music, for many reasons, it might be best to keep it something personal and to enjoy it privately and with your family.

and God knows best what is good for us.

I apologise for the lengthy answer, but this is for the reference of others also who might be interested.

I don't think it matters what kind of music you listen to, be it classical, rock, rap, etc, but I hope some of the things I've mentioned help us and others who consider them.

I don't think it's good to expose your weaknesses to other people; but that's just based on my experience of living with a pseudo-salafi niqabi woman with children and not being able to study because they would be blasting out from their room above mine music with extremely loud base and awful lyrics as well as them thumping and jumping and dancing around to it.

The most important thing is balance, there's times for listening to the Qur'an, and times for listening to other things, but if you cut yourself off suddenly or in extreme ways like this woman did, we naturally crave something more intensely to make up for the unbalance or the dramatic change to our lifestyle.
