Yamini's decision to participate in the ceremony that seemed strangely aggressive for the peaceful pride she had just joined was fairly simple. She wasn't such a terrible fighter, though she didn't always care for it, and she thought it might help her get to know other members of the pride. Her own clan, though she wasn't terribly familiar with it yet, actually had the most participants! Very interesting, she decided, as she readied herself for her own match. She wouldn't have known Cassian if they hadn't been pointed out to each other when paired up for the ceremony, he wasn't in the Tree Ceremony that she had seen and he hadn't really stood out in the crowd nearby during it.
"Ready?" she said, idly pacing near her partner and pondering how much space to put between them to start.

 He'd been partnered with a girl? Cassian snorted, trying not to look too disappointed as he eyed up his opponent. A pretty thing, to be sure. But would she put up much of a fight? Well, to be fair, Cassian had not been in a single fight in his entire life. As a child the problem with his eyesight had kept him from rough and tumble play with his siblings and since he had joined the Ela'wadiyi (shortly after having his eyesight repaired by a goddess) he'd had no reason to fight. This pride was a peaceful place and in the year that he had been a resident he had only indulged in hunting and supporting his peers.
"Of course I'm ready." He replied, a little gruffly. Cassian had definitely mellowed out since his eyesight had been fixed but he could still be grumpy at the best of times. His tail flicked sharply as he settled into position.
"I am Cassian of Earth Clan."
And that was all that needed to be said.

His attitude was interesting but not at all off-putting to the lioness who spent half of her life around aggressive vigilantes and the other half keeping herself safe in the roguelands. She smiled in the face of his gruffness, nodding at his introduction and putting a few steps between them.
"Yamini," she returned, "Of the Mantis Clan."
Then she waited.

Very well...
With another small snort, he wasted no time in getting started. He was strangely confident for one so inexperienced in fighting. The attitude would surely make up for that?
Shaking his mane, he propelled himself forwards, reaching up with a paw - toes splayed and claws away. This was only a game, after all...

He wasn't very chatty or very pleasant seeming but she didn't really have time to ponder it or hold it against him. As soon as he moved, Yamini's posture changed and she was ready to move and fight back. From the close range she had chosen, there wasn't enough time for him to build up too much momentum and ultimately that helped her. While she was hit with his paw hard enough to throw off her balance, she was still able to steady and turn herself about and shove back at him with her shoulder.

His success was small and short-lived as she shouldered into him, sending him off balance. Even still, his far-side legs dug into the ground, preventing him from being pushed too far and his paw came up again to knock her away and give him some room to manoeuvre.
It would be only half successful.

She stumbled back when he dug his feet into the ground and pushed her away. There was only so much you could take just shoving, after all. She had to take a second to untangle her feet before she tripped over herself and then she turned back to look at Cassian and make her next move. There wasn't much she could think to do without waiting for far too long for him to move into a better position.. so she jumped forward, stopping short of actually hitting him, and swiped out at his legs, hoping to knock him off his feet.

--And down he went.
He was a reasonably large lion so when he fell her fell quite hard. There was a startled gasp as the air was shoved from his lungs and for a moment he seemed to be disorientated.
His body twisted as he tried to find his paws again, reaching out with one large fore-paw to keep her at bay. He wasn't sure whether it had worked or not but his paw met nothing but air and then he was struggling back to his paws, trying to back away in case she got in another lucky hit.

As risky as it seemed with a cranky opponent like the one she had, Yamini couldn't keep a snicker to herself as he flailed around trying to sort out how to react to being knocked down. She jumped away from his swipe, knocking at his head with one of her paws to keep him disoriented for a moment as she leaped back.
"You can do better than that," she said brightly, having fun now.

He grumbled, shaking his head to rid himself of the ringing in his ear and looked up at her cheerful face. Stupid girl. He sniffed, took a small step to the side and jutted out his jaw.
"I was taught not to hit girls." Was his only comeback, his heavy brow furrowing. Clearly it was a lesson lightly learned, however, as in the next moment he was charging towards her, head held low as if to return the favour and knock her off of her paws.
That would serve her right!

Yamini snorted when he declared his current loss was because she was a girl. It wouldn't be a fair fight if he was going to take that kind of attitude- but it wasn't going to help him any, either. Her good humor was waning and it provided enough distraction to delay her reaction time to his next move. She failed to get out of the way completely, struck more on one side and sending her painfully off balance. The best she could do to retaliate immediately was aim her paws for his tail as she wobbled off to his side, stepping down. It wouldn't be a hard hit but tails could be quite sensitive when pulled.

Ouch!
It had hurt and a small growl escaped from between his clenched teeth as he whirled to protect his poor tail. That was totally unfair! She was such a cheat! He turned on her, raising another paw to smack her across the nose.
Bridging the gap between them was a bit of a close thing, though...

Seeing a paw coming at your face was more than enough cause to stumble back- and she did, though she wasn't spared the hit. Giving her head a quick shake, she pushed forward, putting all of her weight into giving him a good shove as payback.

He absorbed her shove without too much fuss, giving a small grunt as he shifted his weight and dug his claws into the soft ground beneath him. They carved small grooves as he did so and helped stop him from being pushed back further.
Snarling, growing frustrated, he lunged back at her, aiming low to try and flip her straight off of her paws.

Everything happened very quickly after she shoved at him. She barely had time to think, reacting instinctively as she was pushed violently off her feet and extending her claws in an attempt to strike him before she hit the ground. When she landed, she had no immediate sense of if she had managed to get him or not but only gave herself a couple seconds to catch her breath and start scrambling back to her feet. She definitely hadn't landed well, she could feel it.
