So I'm in a dorm triple, and I'm getting increasingly frustrated with one roommate (the other one's awesome by the way). She's particularly insensitive to the fact that I can have a killer of a time trying to fall asleep or, better yet, stay asleep.

I've velcro'd some curtains to the ceiling to block out light, which for the past couple of weeks has gotten me some pretty good sleep.

The problem is that starting next week, she's going to be attending sports practice and she'll be setting her alarm at 5 am Monday through Friday and 6 am on Saturday. She's always had this habit of leaving on her alarm for a ridiculous amount of time (the very first morning, she literally left it beeping for 5 minutes straight until another roommate finally turned it off... and she said she "didn't hear it"), but since I have earlier classes than her, it's never been much of a problem until now. Practice started today, a Saturday, and I woke up at 6 with her alarm, and couldn't fall back asleep. She was glowing the whole day about how it wasn't so bad waking up early and how she had so much energy, but I just felt exhausted the entire day. Monday through Friday will be worse, since it'll be 5 am, and it'll be midterm week too.

I've brought up the problem in passing, just as a mention, and today I specifically tried suggesting that she plug her headphones into her phone, so that only she hears the alarm, but she rebuffed the idea, saying that headphones fall off. I think that's a sound reason, but I can't think of an alternative, and she's certainly not trying to come up with one. I've put up with her for three weeks now, but I'm not going to put up with waking at 5 everyday, especially if I have to stay up really late some days.

I've asked my dad to think about ordering me noise-cancelling earmuffs of some sort, since I've tried and failed earplugs.

Do you guys know if these so-called noise-cancelling earmuffs/headphones work? Do you guys have any other solutions?

I know I could just suck it up, but I've always had problems falling asleep, even by myself back home, and I don't need them exacerbated by her, least of all her. Right now she basically dictates how much sleep I get, because I fall asleep when she turns off her light (she always goes to bed the latest), and I wake up with her alarm.

You could potentially invest in a pair of the eye-covers that have an alarm within them that produces light in front of your eyes (withiin the eye-cover), and in addition simply use a form of ear plugs. You won't have to deal with waking up to your roommate's alarm and the lightening features in the eye-covers is actually pretty reliable. Actually makes for an easier wake-up, simulating how light would naturally be coming in as day breaks.

^ That should be suggested to the roommate. Why compromise when there's a solution where everyone wins but the guilty party's wallet?

I'm sorry one of your roommates suck in the morning. :c

One morning when she ignores her phone's alarm you should grab it, slam the window open, put her phone out of sight, mock chucking it out the window, muffle the speakers, and then quickly turn off the alarm while shutting the window in a dramatic huff.

JK it's a terrible idea. emotion_awesome Her reaction would be priceless, but you'd also get punched in the face.
