Mainly because the only realistic happy ending to nuclear war is that thousands of years later after the radiation is gone... aliens find our withered shell of a planet and terraform it.
AT happens centuries after a global nuclear war. Logically that would permanently kill all life on the planet.
Hell no it wouldn't! Aquatic life would be nearly untouched, areas further away from cities would be less affected, a number of species are atomic energy resistant, and life in many nuclear accident sites begins to thrive waaay sooner than we'd expect.
