Endzela had read the letter that Lark had written to Kettil. The Owl had read it several times because Kettil had absentmindedly just left it on his couch before he'd written his return letter and then left the room. When the Familiar had come back home there had been no sight or sound of her beloved Reaper but she knew he was safe somewhere because ... She was still there. Even if she could feel his heartache but she wasn't sure if it was due to the FEAR they shared or the fact that the letter torn her own little heart in twain as well. She had such high hopes for them the future seemed limitless and it all seemed plausible but that was likely because she wanted to believe that Kettil would be alright what Familiar wouldn't want this?
When the door creaked open and entered the room he was carrying a baggie, both caught the Owl's attention.
"You're safe!" She cooed softly. As her wings flapped once and then she set to straightening the feathers once more there was a pause before she let him respond, "I was worried about you after I saw that letter."
Kettil gave her a wry but shaken smile as he moved to sit with Endzela on the couch not acknowledging the letter at the moment as he dug a small bit of raw meat from the baggie and offered it to his Familiar. She gladly ate it; it had made up for his absence.
"I just needed to think," Kettil said softly his tone quiet and thoughtful. "I ran into Ulmuka and he had some really good insights, so I think I am out of the danger of going into too many hysterics," he laughed slightly but the laughter was empty and hollow. Even if the talk helped soothe the pain that was in his heart it was still there just dulled down a few notches.
Endzela preened her chest feathers a bit before she spoke, "I think she still cares for you but maybe it is better this way. Who knows what the future holds," she said softly, hopefully. Maybe Lark would change her mind and want to start over again."
Kettil let out a small quiet unconvinced 'hmm' sound in response. The more he thought of it the more he doubted it on some level but then again experience was too fresh, "I guess so. I mean, I tried to make her happy but I guess it didn't work."
A small n** from her beak caused him to startle, "Kajika Blacke, do not talk down about yourself that way," the Familiar reprimanded using his actual name rather than the alias he used for everyday, "you made her plenty happy, she just wasn't ready is all. You just can either wait or continue on."
The thought of waiting for Lark to return and want to start over was a concept he'd mulled over but his shoulders merely shifted, "It is something I am thinking of but I think...She'd want me to continue on. Maybe she just wasn't my Wing after all." He fed his Familiar another morsel of meat which she ate at a more thoughtful pace now. "I think I will just keep walking the path and if something new happens I will just feel it out and see what happens," he smiled a little bit, "she's still my friend that will never stop and at least ... it didn't get too complicated between us."
Endzela was done and then she let out a small sound of agreement, "I suppose this is right," there was a quiet introspective moment. "What if Freya becomes single?"
Kettil's reaction was a wide eyed look and a bit of a blush crossing over his face as he stared downward for a long moment, "I..doubt that'll happen. I don't know where Herryk is but I am sure he'd help her?"
Another n** got his attention, "Play the 'what if' game with me or you won't sleep for a week," she grumbled at him, it was her way of asking him to humor her even if the outcome was never correct nor played out ideally, she didn't care. She wanted him to consider the possibilities.
He rubbed at his arm and stuck his tongue out at the Owl as he just sighed, "I'd ask her out...We always said that ... if it was just us we'd try it out," he said softly almost sounding wistful, the blush didn't decrease, "and I'd try to help her through everything no matter what but...I'm already doing that even though I am just her friend. I know Herryk has her back so I am sure with him to help Hel and I..."
"Hel said herself to not wait around for him, she doesn't know where he is," Endzela said dryly.
Kettil chewed on his bottom lip and sighed softly, "She knows where he is, I don't see Freya not knowing. That'd be like me not knowing where..." A couple of tears fell from his eyes as he just deflated for a moment. It was bound to happen, a couple of tears over lost possibilities and memories that could have been had. He just let out a sigh as he reached and pet Endzela upon her head, he cleared his throat as his free hand wiped away the tears, "Freya knows where Herryk is she just needs to reach out to him and she'll be fine. I am just added support."
The baggie was set to the ground and the letter more or less just fell to the ground as Kettil moved to lay on his side hugging his Familiar to his chest, an embrace she welcomed readily as the Owl snuggled against him and closed her eyes murmuring, "Ah, sweet Kettil, you'll be alright my darling. Just build your heart strong and smile again."
He gave a small nod as he closed his eyes and the next thing he knew he fell into a dreamless sleep.
