In 2012 the lights went out. The lights went out everywhere; it happened all over the world. No one knows why. People went insane. If you were smart, you got out of the city. You gathered with others and created your own small village. The blackout was fourteen years ago. As for me, I was only three when it happened. I had no idea what was going on. The last thing I remembered was my mom feeding me icecream, telling me to remember the taste, because I'll never be able to taste it again. You're forced to train yourself in survival; forced to start a new life of no power.

Maya

Maya jolted upward in her rickety twin bed, the blue fuzzy sheets unfurled from her and lying in a heap on the wooden floor. Just a dream. she reassured herself, wiping the sweat from her forehead. She made her way downstairs after dressing in a gray tanktop and tan leather jacket with denim jeans and brown lace up boots. She sighed as her brother greeted her a good morning. "Morning," she said in reply.
Maya winced as sunlight blinded her when walking outside. The smell of plants and hogs filled her nostrils, making her smile. She enjoyed the small village she was in. It held a population of about thirty; the people were humble and caring, making Maya feel at home. Well, this has been her home for awhile now anyway. She walked over towards the large gate entrance and peeked out. The Malitia was due to come today to pick up taxes and whatever else they wanted.
The Malitia was lead by a leader with dark skin and a stern face. He was usually cruel, never showing mercy just like the rest of the Malitia. They were a group that rose up when the blackout happened. All they did was torture, take, and kill.
Maya shifted into the woods with her bow and tan backpack. Her older brother didn't really care for her going in the woods; in fact, he was pretty against it. But Maya was one of the best hunters of her village and was an excellent shot. She perched onto the dirt ground, smiling up at the plants crawling up the trees and throughout the ground, waiting for game to pass by.
