Stiff, he didn't want to move. Part of him said he didn't need to move, another part said he had to move. And when he did, grey filled his world, followed shortly by color. He was alive. At least the pain told him he was. How long was anyone's guess. Flexing finger, then reaching out to Dis- The vampire was there. Annoyed, but there. The world around them was fog and mist. Not good. He wished it was just them on the beach of the island, but no, this was more an endless void of nothing. Of the very thing that Marcus really wanted to avoid.
It was like Silent Hill but only worse.
Getting up, he took a moment to stretch out, summoning Dis for some sort of beacon to his fellow hunters. Or to those that would kill him for it. A calculated risk. If the halloweeners were smart, they'd be less interested in attacking than in finding a way out of the grey hell. "Hey!" He figured he'd try to call out. "Any one out there?"

This was...not exactly as he had planned.
And really what he wanted to do was get the hell out of here right now. Except since that really didn't seem like a possibility, apparently, Gale was forced into thinking outside of the box.
<< Don't you mean outside of the fog? >>
Shut up, you.
The rifle was already summoned, Gale's fingers wrapped around the handhold of the gun, keeping it level and ready to attack at the first sign of anything wrong. All this fog made him tense and on edge, and he narrowed his eyes, moving slowly.
" - ey!"
Gale stiffened. "Did you hear something?"
<< I believe I did. >>
" - nyone out there?"
He squinted in the thick white fog.
"Marcus? Is that you?"

For a few seconds, nothing. The "-cus? Is that you?" The glow of one large gun like thing and the voice- "Gale?" He got closer and confirmed with a sigh of relief, it was indeed, Gale. "Thank god. Someone else is alive. Providing this isn't some kind of purgatory." That would be their luck wouldn't it? "Just woke up here. You feeling go-" A crunch, he looked down, shard of glass under his boot. "Well, hopefully that wasn't important."

"Marcus," said Gale, some of the tension in his shoulders easing in relief at the sight of his friend. "Hey. Good to see you. And, well..."
He scowled down at the now broken piece of glad.
"I don't know where we are. And I'm really hoping this isn't some kind of purgatory, though that would be just our luck, wouldn't it?"
Gale frowned a bit, and looked out at the fog, eyes narrowing. "See anyone else around here?"

"Our luck I'd come come back as a vampire, you as a ghost. Somehow, I think the cosmos would get a kick out of that one." Dis gave a hum of approval at the notion of a Marcus vampire. One that the hunter was not going to linger on. "Haven't seen anyone else. Possible we're stuck here, and-" Flicking open his phone he shut it a few seconds later. "Yeah. We're on our own." He held a hand out. "You're the death and my senior in this case Gale. Up to you where we go from here. So long as it's no towards any dragons think we're golden."

Gale gave a derisive snort while Jinhai laughed lightly inside of his head.
<< If Marcus becomes anything like his weapon, I fear for your safety, Gale. >>
Gale rolled eyes, then glanced over at Marcus' cell phone warily. There was no signal, nobody else around, no sign of their leaders. They were on their own out here, a fact that made the scowl on Gale's face deepen.
"Please, no dragons. Well..."
He looked around, eyes narrowing slightly.
"Let's take a look around, then."

If Marcus became anything like Dis he'd want to be put out of his misery. Or die to prevent the suffering of others. That was a very moon thing to do right. "Actually, thinking on it, which would be better. Dragon or Death?" He wasn't clear on it, but Marcus was thinking more towards Caelius magically showing up and being his usual self. "At least with the dragon it would be predictable. Death is kind of.. yeah."
Looking around wasn't the moon hunter's strong suit, but he could try. "Maybe if we're lucky, we'll find signs of other hunters. Living ones." He tacked the last bit on for good measure.

"Death," said Gale with a very straight face. "Well, if the dragon destroyed my house again, well..."
"Unless Caelius destroys my house in a fit of rage over losing his last bottle of Garnier Fructise, then I'd take my chances with the dragon."
It was difficult to see just what was going on. The fog was thick and Gale's head felt oddly light. He frowned in the haze, swiping a hand in front of him in an attempt at distilling some of the fog, but to no avail.
"This is ridiculous."

"Like I said, I'd take the dragon. At least we know that it's pretty much always going to attack us when it finds us. Caelius? He's like a ticking time bomb. Plus I'm a moon, he probably considers me double canon fodder." The hair comment had Marcus snorting, waving Dis on the ground to see if he could see anything.
"They tell you guys in Death anything that might help? Moon was the standard defend the fort and then the morons who go running off into the mist. And in my case, defend the moons that were too stubborn to retreat." He sighed. "Frankly speaking, less defending so much as trying to keep the insanity things busy."

A muscle in Gale's jaw clenched, and he took a few steps forward, his eyes on the ground.
"Caelius doesn't tell us anything we need to know, only what he wants to know," he said finally, while Jinhai made a soft noise inside of his head. "Sometimes I wonder...well, never mind, it doesn't matter now."
He glanced to the side and squinted a little. Was it just his imagination, or...
"Look," said Gale, and pointed. "Look, there's a light up ahead." He pivoted where he stood. "And look, another one, over there."
Studying them carefully, he tapped the barrel of the gun onto the ground and frowned.
"I think we should go this way," he said, taking a step towards the warm light.

That was probably what he should have expected. Still, Marcus had hoped... Just maybe for once they weren't going in blind. He didn't like to be fodder, but until he got better... Dis's words echoed in his head. Until he got power, Marcus would be at the mercy of others. For better of worse.
"What, thinking to see if you can't start climbing the ranks?" He teased. Looking around, there wasn't much, but when Gale pointed out the light Marcus nodded. "I see it." Hope. "Light at the end of the tunnel eh?" He came up behind the short hunter, leaning on his sword. "You lead, I'll follow." He said, taking step right behind Gale to the light.

Gale's scowl grew more pronounced.
"I would only climb in ranks if Caelius suddenly died, which would never happen because he's going to outlive us all. Or if he suddenly threw one of his temper tantrums and kills Mark out of sheer irritation, but the chances of him picking me are below zero and closer to negative a thousand."
His expression softened slightly. "It would be nice, though," he admitted quietly. "To be able to be promoted again. I think I'd...like that."
Gale shook his head, as though to clear it, and added roughly, "But since it'll never happen, no use thinking about it. And I swear I hope there's an end to this bloody place otherwise I might just go mad in here."

A roll of blue eyes. "Need I remind the youngest hunter on the island, the youngest to have been recruited, to have been the first to promote not just once but twice? The one who people saw potential in even if he didn't see it in himself?" The moon gave the death a shove.
"Maybe he wouldn't, but then, never know. Ranks aren't just assistant and lead in a way. Work your way up as a hunter. Make it so Mark can't do s**t without you having his back. One day you'll get it. As for me, I'm just wanting to prove I'm worth keeping as a moon." A stretch, the scimitar was kept in front slightly to the side. "Gale, let's face it, we put up with some crazy s**t. 'Madness' is pretty objective for us hunters after a certain point."

If Gale had been a normal sixteen-almost-seventeen year old boy, he probably would have stuck out his tongue at Marcus. As it was, he merely rolled his eyes, but the scowl on his face was slightly less tense than it had been before.
"Just wait," he said. "There'll be another trainee younger than me at some point, I guarantee it."
A small pause.
"But really we both know there's no one quite like me."
<< Did you...just make a joke? >>
Silence.
<< You did, didn't you. You made a joke OH MY JACK I'M SO PROUD OF MY WIDDLE GALEY POO - >>
Shut up. Gale thought loudly at Jinhai and then chanced what might have been an almost-but-not-quite smile up at Marcus.
"Well, if there's anyone qualified for anything, it's you. I mean, you got promoted right after I did, and you're bloody well more amazing than I am at this sort of thing."

Eye rolling, it's not just for trainees. Opening his mouth to say how Gale still would have the record for fastest to promote, Marcus shut it as the death hunter cracked a rather unexpected joke. A barking laugh, Marcus nodded. "Damn right Gale. We've got a good handful of us around, but you tend to one up us at most things. And me promoting? That would require me to be skilled at what I do. And I doubt that Miss Carr would take someone who's only a journeyman in repair work at best, novice in the infirmary, and s**t on the field. I've got my own things to prove still, and you've been proving yourself since day one, and it shows."
A twirl of Dis, the fog was pretty endless, and it seemed they'd be alone. "Most I can do is just.. study and train. Been working on picking up Farsi, but even that is kind of difficult and a stretch. Nearly no one on the island speaks it, and there is a chance I'll never have need to use it."
