Miiiiinnnnnneee! It hurts! Devith groaned the absolute picture of the suffering dragon where he lay in his wallow his big silver head half sitting in his rider's lap as she scratched his eyeridges.
"I know Devith. I know." Hekate soothed her eyes dark with worry for her dragon and anger at the lack of help. When Devith had been smaller the cramps had been easier to handle and Hekate had managed to ease the pain a bit by massaging the aching muscle. Now however the silver was getting a little big for such tactics to be as effective.
I am not pleased. Devith rumbled his tone dark and would have been a good deal more disturbing and scary were it not for his dejected nuzzling of his rider hoping to urge her to continue her eyeridge scratching.
"Come on let's go pester the healers. All the critical patients have been taken care of. They can't turn us away now in good conscious, not when you're hurting." Hekate vouched giving her dragon one last good eyescratch before urging him to let her up. Reluctantly Devith moved his head slowly slinking to his feet his steps slowed with pain. That however did now stop him from having his usual pose as he slunk after his rider towards the ramshackle healers building curling up beside it not far from where a rather bulky green had taken up residence along with their flits. Hekate doubted the healers would appreciate her winged escort in the still cramped building even as she made her way inside.
One healer paused looking up to spot the red haired rider. "He's having cramps again." Hekate quickly explained as the woman jotted something down with a sigh.
"Very well we think we might have someone who can help you." The woman grumbled all to familiar with the pesky rider and her silver. The two had ingrained themselves quite a good deal in a few of the nurses minds with their constant visiting of Dizzian and Courath during the two's interment there due to their injuries. Devith had had to get rather vocal at one point when he had discovered one of the younger healers had not been listening to Dizzian and missing spots on Courath's hide. Luckily Hekate had reigned him in and the problem had been solved peacefully and quietly.
Escorting Hekate back past a number of beds the healer grabbed a chair setting it down in front of a bed with a man in it and motioning Hekate to take a seat. "Her dragon's having muscle cramps. Could you possibly handle this Bereck?" The healer asked hoping the man would agree and she could keep two pests busy with one conversation.

Waking: P-Level = 8/10. Stabbing and shooting again - no change from the norm.
Bereck gave the healer addressing him the most focused look he could manage. Oh, poor little dragon(!) His heart positively bled and faltered.... No, he was being sarcastic and nasty; his heart thumped stubbornly onward as was required, as it always did, because it was required that it kept on pulsing. "Of course," he rasped as precisely as he could, "easy enough. Can't you Trine lot deal w...with something so elementary?" He had seen endless struggling shiny-dragons with muscle cramps - others too, but most common in the big beasts - in his lifetime, and one more was just a shrug of his shoulders. Gold. Bronze. Silver. All so much more precious than others, destined for greatness just by hide. He wanted to spit at the idea but he couldn't because he had to help them because they breathed, and screamed when it hurt.
He was an unbiased healer.
Should be.
Knives in his flesh.
Deathly pale, skeleton thin and propped up against a heap of pillows Bereck turned sharp yet exhausted blue eyes onto Hekate as she was ushered into a seat. "Your name girl?" he growled out, "and your dragon's, and other ranks you hold that you....." A moment. A breath. "That you feel relevant... and other details." He felt beyond exhausted today, but this was the first time anyone had asked anything of him. Disappointing was not an option.

At Bereck's words Hekate weathered a glance at the healer arching a brow at the woman. That had been what she had been saying all along! Couldn't they spare one sharding minute instead of putting her with this clearly still injured man? However the way the healer merely nodded, smiled and then shuffled away as quickly as she could happy to get back to her work uninterrupted hinted that Hekate wasn't getting out of this. That didn't stop Hekate's eyes from burning a couple holes in the woman's back as she walked away though.
Bereck's questions however brought her back as she turned back to the injured man taking a moment to clear her throat. "My names Hekate sir, my dragon's Devith. Ex drudge, now a weyrling." She responded attempting to be somewhat polite despite his tone setting her teeth on edge.
"He started having cramps not long after impression and one of the healers showed me how to ease his muscles a little, but they've gotten worse lately. They're not bad enough to keep him from moving, but all he wants to do is lay around and get his eyeridges scratched when they're this bad and no ones been able to spare the time lately to tell me how to help him with it. If anything can be done about it at all." Hekate explained glancing out the window where she caught a glimpse of silver hide. At least until Countess smacked right into the shutters, the greens slim body blocking the view in her excitement of catching sight of her owner.
"Oh sorry about her. She's got personal space issues." Hekate quickly explained rising from her chair to step up to the shutters opening them a bit to untangle the green from where she had smacked into them. "Do you mind~" She turned to ask only to have her fair take the open window as a welcome invitation before she could even finish her question. Within seconds Prince her silver, and Baron had sprung through the window taking their favorite spots on her shoulder and amidst her hair. Lady was a bit more polite fluttering to the window sill to wait to be invited in while Maiden Hekate's third green dove towards her owner with a startled squeek and scambered up and into her sleeve. All the while Countess the bright bubbly green was still doing her best to merge herself with her owner's hands the whole lot cooing and rubbing against their owner as if they hadn't seen Hekate in months rather then the few short seconds she'd been away from them.
"Flits." Hekate finished letting out a good natured sigh as she looked down at her lot and glanced between them and Bereck her cheeks bright with embarrassment. "I can send them away if they bother you." She offered a squeek of disagreement resonating from somewhere in her tunic from Maiden. The rest of the fair settled for chittering and voicing their complaints as well.
Should I call them back Mine? Devith inquired with a low croon cracking one eyelid open from where he had curled himself. While he was happy to finally be growing into his size he rather missed being able to accompany his rider everywhere.

A drudge? Not what he'd expected given her confidant manner. Humm, and was her dragon silver? He knew she wasn't a gold rider, so that left silver for the metallics. Could be another atype, or just an unfortunate green or blue.
Bereck blinked, trying to feel more focused on the task at hand, and less rage and frustration at the entire world. It wasn't the girl's fault he was stuck here. Be reasonable. Be-
Swamped by firelizards.
Well, he wasn't swamped by them but their sudden appearance startled his slow mind as much as if they had all dive-bombed him. Pretty little things though, firelizards, and very useful if you trained them right. Bereck made a small dismissive gesture and shook his head. "So long as they behave themselves they can stay. Mmh. Very well Hekate, my name is Bereck; weyrhealer of Malvren - for whatever that's worth these days - and bonded to Berath.... I've made the assumption that your dragon is a silver, persisting muscle cramping problems are most common in them; am I correct?"
Berath passed on, belatedly helpful as she poked her head around the corner of the rough building and bugled a brassy greeting to the weyrling. she went on, approaching with heavy-footed steps, Handsome was perhaps a word a polite person, but one with very specific ideas about green dragons, might apply to Berath herself; thickly muscled, covered in scars and healing wounds and with her left eye covered in bandages she certainly wasn't a picture of elegance.

"They'll mind their manners. I promise." Hekate assured him though the brunt of her words seemed to be targeted at the still very affectionate hyper little green that kept curling itself about her hand. The rest of her fair now assured that they wouldn't once again be separated from their beloved owner soon forgot the trauma of being forced to wait outside and settled down. Tucking Countess the hyper little green into the crease of her tunic where the tiny lizard peaked out chirruping and burbling good naturedly at Bereck she took her seat once more.
"Pleasure to meet you weyrhealer Bereck and yes Devith is the young dusky silver outside." Hekate replied confirming his guess even as she considered his name. Perhaps he'd been holder born and simply hadn't wanted to change it? Not that she particularly minded, Hekate personally liked her name just the way it was silver dragon or no silver dragon. Besides Devith didn't care one flying flit what name she went by.
"He was the only one in his clutch so I haven't really had any dragon's his own age to compare his symptoms too. That and my candidate crash course was not exactly clear how to deal with certain problems like this. Then since the attacks there really hasn't been time for elaboration on it either." She explained a touch more polite now that Bereck seemed like he wouldn't turn her away though no less firm in case the man tried to shoo her off like some of the others. Her lack of candidate training had been a constant worrying thorn in Hekate's side for sometime leaving the girl to wonder if she was hurting more then helping at times. While Dizzian had been able to teach her all she knew about being a candidate her friend had impressed green and her knowledge on the bigger metallics was limited.
At the brassy bugle Devith half uncurled lifting his head to blink at the approaching green giving a low rumbling bugle of his own back in answer. While his muscles might have pinched and strained that didn't stop the silver from stretching slightly arraying himself to ease his injured pride and vanity where he stretched out on the ground looking up at his new visitor. I am he and you must be the lovely Bereth your rider speaks of. Devith crooned to the heavier green his eyes roaming her injuries with a hint of worry. It was an endless source of amusement and trouble to his rider how the young silver had no problem disregarding and shrugging off a bronze, but when it came to the smaller dragons of the Weyr especially greens the usually arrogant dragon was a picture portrait of perfect manners.
It is good to meet your acquaintance. Would you care to come lounge with me? Mine has opened the window so it is easy to see the two-leggers from out here The young silver rumbled warmly drawing a small grin from his rider with his words. Sometimes. . .when he wasn't getting into tussles with the bigger colors Devith could truly be quite the charming devil. Not that this surprised Hekate in the least.

"Good," Bereck replied, eyeing the firelizards carefully for a few moments. Well, at least they seemed to be friendly and they were behaving for now so he supposed he couldn't raise any objection. Anyway they were sweet beasts, useful if trained right though of course he'd never had the time to do so.... He did have time now actually he supposed, time but no way of getting hold of one.
That was hardly an important matter though, just a small bit of life's rich pattern of irony; what mattered at the moment was the dragon outside. "Wait a moment while I take a look at him then," Bereck said gruffly but not unkindly, closing his eyes as he reached out to look through Berath's eyes-
Eye.
Of course, the left was still bandaged. He wished he could get out there to have a look at it for himself, to make sure it was healing well. Frankly he wanted to get out there just to be with her for a while too; it ached to be separated from her like this.... And there he went thinking about himself and getting distracted from his task again; a deep frown followed long worn lines on the healer's pale drawn face, and he forced his mind back on track.
Berath blinked (or possibly winked) when her bondmate's presence appeared more sharply in her mind in order to share her vision. It had been a long time now since he had done that, beyond the span of her memory in fact and so she knew he'd done it countless times before she had to pause a moment to adjust to the sensation. 'Lovely' was not a descriptor people usually used for her; 'impressive', yes and 'healthy looking' and things like that but not lovely. she went on,

Devith rumbled a low greeting as she confirmed who she was though he sensed his compliment had not been taken quite as intended. Very well then. He replied as she went on. I will await your company. Is there anything yours would ask of me to do while you circle? Devith inquired tilting his head to eye the large green with interest.
Inside with the firelizards settled Hekate watched with interest as Bereck closed his eyes. Staring at the healer's pale slightly gaunt face for a moment she pondered just how he planned to take a look at her dragon. He didn't appear to have any flits of his own to send him images as she did.
Devith? What is Berath doing? Hekate asked feeling her dragon's curiosity just as piqued as her own.
She says Hers wants to take a good look at me and is circling. Devith explained even as he kept half an eye on the green. Devith was about average in size and build for a silver with a fine layer of sleek muscle that had developed with the constant movement forced on him and his rider during the attacks. His hide however was breathtaking in pattern for a silver his marking a dark almost metallic over the lighter dusky silver and shown with the constant attentive oiling both dragon and ride insisted on. Still it seemed even Devith had not escaped the fighting unscathed as a long thin faded knife scar traced over his shoulder, a second one that with his growth had almost disappeared lay half hidded tucked between the toes of his front foot. Both marks of pride as far as Devith was concerned.
Her dragon's words though sparked Hekate's interest. She had heard that some riders who lost an eye to thread would borrow their dragon's eyes, but had never done so herself. The closest she came to doing so was to occasionally borrow those of her flits, something she knew Devith himself did fairly often to keep tabs on her when she was out of his sight.
Letting her own eyes flicker shut Hekate concentrated reaching out to her lifebond. Mine? Devith voiced his curiosity as he felt his rider's presence sharper then ever before.
It's ok Devith. I just want to see if we can do what they're doing. Hekate assured him trying to concentrate as the silver settled back down ignoring the slight tickling behind his eyes as suddenly Hekate's mind was filled with brilliant color.
The girl almost forgot to breath all together as she stared out through Devith's eyes following his gaze as he watched Berath circle. Every flicker of eye movement, every twitch of his tail, the slight shift of a claw, she was aware of it in amazing brilliant detail. It would be until Bereck spoke again that the girl would be startled from her experiment opening her eyes to stare back at the older man with surprise.

Berath replied with a friendly croon as she started on her slow circuit of the silver. Sitting comfortably in her mind Bereck studied the atype with an expert's clinically critical eye. Straight limbs of equal length, decently muscled, no overt joint problems such as swelling or a mis-set angle. Clear bright eyes, well cared for hide (its pattern went unnoticed), healthy looking crests and wing membranes. A scar on his shoulder, but well healed. That would do for an initial examination; he would want to look again later in more detail but he knew enough now to move forward and make recommendations. Time to go back inside his own head then.
This was why he hadn't borrowed Berath's eyes before, why he had refused no matter how bored he'd been. He didn't want to go back. Closely connected to Berath, focused on her senses he could ignore his own. He wanted to stay here, it didn't hurt here; some of Berath's wounds were still uncomfortable but by contrast she felt as though she were in the peak of health at the peak of her prime....
There was work to be done.
Bereck's face tightened with the renewed surge of agony as he withdrew from his bondmate's mind and he took in a slightly shaky breath. Why did it have to be like this? Why did this child have to need his help; couldn't somebody else help her? Surely there was a queue longer than a gold eager to assist a rare and wonderful silver!
There he went again being unfair and insanely bitter over something that didn't matter, that he usually just scoffed at. He hated being like this.
Bereck opened his eyes, preparing to glare at Hekate if she made any mention of the pained look he knew must have flashed across his face before he could find aplomb. As luck would have it however the girl seemed to have gone to sleep or... perhaps she was doing what he had been doing. Bereck cleared his throat pointedly. "Still there girl?" When she startled back to awareness Bereck studied her intently. "Not done that before?"

Hekate blinked and offered the man a small almost shy smile at being caught. "Err no sir. When Devith mentioned what Berath was doing I wanted to try it. We haven't really touched on it in any of the lessons." She explained straightening slightly and composing herself drawing a few cheeps from the two firelizards hiding in her tunic.
Staring at Bereck now Hekate felt a pang of sorrow. The world was so much duller seeing through her own eyes and she distinctly missed the closeness her and Devith had shared. In the back of her mind she could feel him reaching his own mind out to her reassuring himself that his rider was fine despite her sudden hasty withdrawal.
"Is it always like that?" She finally asked her curiosity getting the better of her for a moment before she reminded herself that the reason she had come here was not to pester the man with questions, but to take care of her dragon. "And about Devith? Did you find anything?" Hekate added not wanting to draw out her dragon's discomforted.
Devith now that he had been circled settled back down doing his best to try and ignore the constant aching of his muscles. The warm glow of the sun on his hide and the soft grass beneath him did relax the silver somewhat as he awaited Berath. Does yours borrow your eyes often? He questioned curious and his mind already buzzing with ideas. Devith had used the flits numerous times as lookouts, but they could only give him a constant stream of pictures. Hekate however had used his eyes like her own making him ponder if perhaps in turn could borrow hers in much the same manner.

That explained it then; Bereck gave a slight nod, recalling the first time he had borrowed Berath's eyes from the distant past. He still remembered how it had felt with perfect clarity, as he did many similar moments, but it felt like half a lifetime ago now. He supposed it nearly had been, well, more like a third or a quarter or something but a long time in any case.
"Mmmh, I imagine the weyrlingmasters would have got to it eventually." Bereck gave an almost imperceptibly small shrug. "Puts you ahead of the game in a small way.... And is it always like what?" he frowned slightly. "I can't answer you if you ask me half questions that I have to try and guess the rest of. Anyway, I can't see anything that gives me cause for concern on your Devith. His muscle pains are almost certainly growing pains, exacerbated by simply being a silver. Humm, where are the pains? Are they all over, or concentrated in a specific area?" Perhaps it was good that she'd been sent to him for help rather than somebody else; giving him something to think about had to be a good thing. Maybe that was why they'd done it.
With her job done Berath accepted Devith's previous invitation and settled down nearby, her visible eye dulling a few shades as she felt HerHealer's pain renew. she replied slightly sombrely, Carefully teasing more details out of Bereck's mind Berath went on; She reached a tendril of awareness towards her bondmate then, questioning, requesting. She didn't mind it hurting if she could be closer to him through it... but no, he rebuked her with a flick of his mind; she might not mind but he did, so she would have to wait until he was recovered to be let back in that close.

"I meant is it always so sharp? So close? Though of course it would make sense for the colors to be more vibrant and the details clearer since dragon's have superior vision to our own." Hekate replied a bit sharper as she gave him her full question whatever shyness she had had before at being caught unaware gone. When he posed his question to her in return she paused considering her answer. She knew the pain was all over, but there were a few select areas that were even more tender and sore then others.
"The muscles at the base of his wings and in his legs hurt the worst, but the pain tends to be widespread. Sometimes rubbing those areas eases the pain a bit, but lately even that hasn't been helping as much as it used too." Hekate replied feeling a slight pressure on her mind as Devith explored his new idea though a quick mental shrug sent the silver back to his own body.
We'll experiment with this later Devith. Hekate assured him at his mental rumble of discontent. While Devith was far from the clingiest dragon he had rather enjoyed having his so close in his mind and was as curious to see what it was like to be human as Hekate was what it was like to be a dragon.
I think I will have to try it later with Mine. The flits usually send me pictures of her when we are separated so I know she is unharmed. Not that I doubt they would defend her until I arrived should anything attempt to harm her. The oldest green, Lady, is quite adept at warding off unwelcome two-leggers. Devith explained crooning to the bright dark and light streaked green where she still sat on guard on the windowsill. Lady responded by returning a little chirrup and preening enjoying the attention and compliments paid to her.

"Sharp?" Bereck's brows drew together in a thoughtful expression. "Well, I suppose it is sort of... sharp, yes. Sharp, vibrant... close. Yes." It was tempting to go back, but he still had things to do here and he didn't want people thinking he was going all vague again.
Think.
"Keep up the massages," Bereck went on after a moment, blinking and focusing properly on Hekate again. "If you have any big strong friends, it wouldn't hurt to ask them to help you with that; the bigger his muscles get the harder it will be for you to work them. A dragon who knows the proper technique would be even better but I'm not sure who...."
He was a total idiot. Bereck closed his eyes and squeezed the bridge of his nose.
After a moment he opened his eyes and lowered his hand, resting the bony digits on the sheets once more. "Allow me to start that again." He still didn't have his grip on things, he'd thought he more or less did until then. "A dragon who knows the proper technique would be even better; I'll lend you Berath if Devith doesn't object. In addition she can demonstrate some stretches and exercises that will help him. If he still has pains after that there are a few dietary supplements we can try him on, but massage and exercises are best to try first. No point interfering with his food if it isn't needed."

Do you have any objections to Berath helping us love? Hekate asked just to be sure though she doubted Devith would have a problem with the large green.
Of course not Mine. Especially if she can ease the pain in my muscles. The silver replied crooning low in his rider's mind at the idea. Perhaps Berath might show him some more neat tricks.
"Devith says he doesn't mind. Not that I thought he would, he adores greens. I'd like to avoid tampering with his food as well if I can. Devith is rather hardy, but he's still a silver and I don't want to risk making him sick." Hekate replied nodding her agreement with Bereck when it came to the subject of her dragon's food.
"Would you like me to leave the window open so you can keep an eye on us outside as Berath instructs us?" She asked figuring if nothing else the man would perhaps like a bit of fresh air.

"Such things are especially designed with atypes in mind you know," Bereck replied with a hint of frown. "Don't think I'm dull enough to suggest something that could worsen him. A touch of lethargy is the worst one could expect, but mixing up the formula takes time and resources." They had little enough of the latter; avoiding expending their stocks more than necessary was vital. "Leave the window," Bereck replied after a short pause, opening his eyes as he became aware that they'd drifted closed. "I can't see anything much from here, but you might as well watch." The slight breeze coming in was pleasant. He missed outside. He was far from an outdoorsy person, but now that he couldn't just step outside for a breath of air he waned to. People always did want what they couldn't have, didn't they? Berath blinked and drew her attention away from her bondmate. Maybe she would persuade Berr to let go and come flying with her for a little while, if only with his mind. the green went on, shaking aside personal thoughts for the time being.

"Of course I don't think you're dull enough to suggest something that could worsen him. You're a Weyrhealer, you certainly wouldn't be one unless you were the best. Just the world's been tossed on it's head enough as it is. I'd like to maybe keep some semblance of routine for him where I can." Hekate explained becoming somewhat annoyed at how the man always seemed inclined to think the worst of her and Devith. Not that she wasn't really used to such things, but when it came to her dragon she was a touch more protective then she was of herself.
Turning to the window she lifted a hand summoning her green silently from the sill to allow a bit more breeze and make it easier for her to see out. Depositing Lady on the back of the chair she turned to eye the silver and green figures outside. "I'll leave it then." She answered her flits turning to watch as well interested to see what their big one would do.
I think Mine would like that very much. Devith rumbled back to his green companion his eyes whirling bright with such an idea. Yes it would be his surprise for her. A way for his to get away from the crowds she loathed so much.
At Berath's request Devith stretched his wings out turning to expose the more tender area. The muscles at the base of my wings hurt the worst. They are tight and sore and make moving my wings difficult. The silver explained watching the green with curious eyes as she would work.
