Beta trekked the hill that separated her from the lake she'd first met Jaromila at, finishing the familiar route that she and Haides had walked countless times together to visit their best friend. But this time, there was no Haides with her. She had a feeling it would be a while before they would see him again. The newly grown stallion hadn't said a word; she'd woken up in the night to find that her best friend had vanished. It wasn't too surprising for her. She had known for quite some time that he was preparing himself to go on a journey. But even so, she had hoped he would've waited just a little longer... Or had learned to say goodbye.

Jaromila had just left the area her family lived in and headed for the lake, for some time to herself. With all the family together, she needed some time to think to herself. She trotted over to the lake and when she got there, she laid down gently. She looked out to the calm blue water and wondered how Haides and Jaromila were doing. She didn't have plans to meet them today, so she could only hope both of them were alright. She closed her eyes and just allowed herself a chance to rest.

Beta smiled when she spotted a familiarly-colored mare resting at the lake as she galloped down the hill. She slowed to a trot and then to a walk as she approached. "Mind if I join you?" She smiled brightly. "It's been a while."

Jaromila looked over when she heard a familiar voice and she smiled when she saw it was Beta.
"Hello Beta, I did not expect to see you today. I see you have grown up too,Mila smiled brightly. She wondered where Haides was, then remembered sadly that Beta had warned her of Haides going on a journey one day. She knew it was going to come, but it still made her extremely sad.

Beta nodded. "Uh-huh! We both did." She laid down on the grass next to Jaromila. "Haides left already." She stared at the water, taking a few minutes to soak in the scenery before speaking again. "I knew it was coming, but... it's still a little strange, now that it's happened, y'know?"

Jaromila sighed softly as Beta confirmed what she thought had happened to Haides. She looked out at the water once again, wondering when her friend would be back.
"I suspected that was the reason that Haides was not with you when you came out here. I know you warned me of it happening, but it just saddens me that it happened. I kind of wanted him to see how I look now that I have grown. My older sisters even came to see us," Mila explained.

Beta nodded. "Mmm... Maybe he didn't want to see yet... because he was afraid that he wouldn't be able to leave if he did." She smiled at her friend. "Haides doesn't like regret, so he chose a method that would prevent it." Her smile morphed into a grin. "And he's really bad with goodbyes. He's never had to give a real farewell before."

Jaromila thought about what Beta said and wondered if Haides would have stayed if he had seen her. She pushed the thought out of her mind, knowing that he needed to do this.
"I suppose I should have reasoned that he would not be able to say good-bye to us. Considering how hard it is for him to express his feelings, I do not think he wanted to hurt us or your family," Mila admitted.

Beta nodded her agreement. "It would've been really hard for him. He's gotten a lot closer to the others." She smiled slightly. "I guess we can thank you for that."

Jaromila nodded softly, knowing it would have been very hard for Haides to say good-bye. She had noticed he seemed to be opening up more to those he cared about and it made her smile.
"All I did was point out to him that he needed to give all of them a chance. I told him it was alright to love a family again and to trust others," Mila spoke.

"And that was all he needed." Beta glanced at the lake. "What we both needed." She looked up at the sky for a moment before smiling at Jaromila again. "Maybe that's how I knew that you two were soul mates."

Jaromila's smile widened, glad she had been able to help her friends become closer to their family.
"I was glad to help, then, since you two really have a wonderful family. Anyone could have told him what he needed to hear, does not mean we are soulmates," Mila explained.

"Anyone could have told him," Beta agreed. She paused, smiling brightly at the other mare. "But not anyone could get him to listen. Haides is so stubborn... if he doesn't want to do something, he won't do it--no matter what anyone else says or does. But when you speak, he listens and he's willing to accept your words. Not anyone can do that." The smile widened. "You're soul mates. We already decided."

Jaromila laughed lightly, knowing that she could not argue with Beta on this one. She actually was glad to have a soulmate, it made her feel like she was whole, even when he was far away.
"Alright, Beta, you win on this one, he is my soulmate. I like thinking of him like that, though, it makes me happy," Mila admitted.

"That's because that's what you are," Beta said cheerfully. "And that's how a soul mate's supposed to make you feel." She tilted her head. "At least I think so. That's right, right? Soul mates make you feel super-dee-duper happy when you're together."
