Haven walked through the halls like she owned the school.

She didn’t, of course. She was neither that fortunate nor that popular, but her overly-determined, excessively bossy, ready-to-tattle-on-you attitude tended to keep people from bothering her, and so she had a clear path through the hallway as many of the other students lined the walls behind their teachers or clumped together in pre-pubescent cliques. This served Haven fairly well, as it meant she could traverse the halls and arrive at her destination without being bothered too much, and she took advantage of the caution her presence usually caused among some of her prankster peers unwilling to be caught, stalking down the hall swiftly and with purpose.

She kept her head up even when a few other kids mumbled mean things, because they were just kids and they couldn’t always be depended upon to be polite—or smart, as the case may be—and she already knew she was better than them anyway. Haven wasn’t looking for their approval, nor did she care if she ever got it. She had more important things to focus her attention on, not least of which was her school work, which she carried in her arms and held to her chest like a shield.

There was research that needed to be done, and Haven was just the person to do it.

Unfortunately, it didn’t seem as if everyone had gotten the memo, as some of the younger Knightside kids had strayed out into the hallway, causing her to weave around them or risk bumping right into them, which she did only a few moments later.

With a long-suffering sigh she said, “Excuse me,” and tried not to sound too snooty about it.

Winston didn't care what age you were or what status you had in the school because he enjoy everyone company. Plus he was so young he really didn't understad the differences between who not to talk to and who not to talk to.
He was currently talking to his classmates about which superhero was best and he was giving a hard line about how superman could destroy all of the other superhero if he wanted to. Really for batman. Winston never really enjoy batman and felt like he just used his money to become a superhero which was not cool, not cool at all.

When all his friends started to moved away from the middle of the hallway he looked around confused why they were doing this until he heard a light "Excuse me." He quickly turn around and gave her a small smile. "I'm sorry miss, I didn't mean to be in you way." He said moving out of her way and putting his hand out as to direct her to her way, like any knight.

He looked around seeing if anyone else was with her and frown. This couldn't be right! No girl should walking by themselves, it wasn't safe. He moved to her side and smile. "I'll walk you to class, miss. You'll be safe with me!" he said in his most knightly voice he could produce. He looked back to his friend and waved and smile as the gave his weird faces.

Haven almost corrected him, would have told him she wasn’t a “Miss” anything if she hadn’t suddenly decided she liked the sound of it. She thought it made her sound very grown up to be referred to by a younger student as “Miss.”

“My name’s Haven,” she said anyway, so at least he’d have a name to put behind the “Miss” if he wanted to. It was better than trying to use her last name. She didn’t want to sound like a teacher. Or her mom.

She looked the boy over curiously, finding his behavior strange. He was clearly not as old as she was. In fact, she suspected he might be in one of the youngest two grades, perhaps a year or two higher than that if he was lucky and she was mistaken. Definitely not in her grade. She likely would have seen him before if he was. She might not talk to all the people in her sixth grade class, much less the entire sixth grade itself, but at least she knew who a majority of people were by their faces.

This boy she didn’t recognize at all.

“I’m not going to class,” she announced, though she did try not to sound too rude. Maybe he was a little weird, but at least he was being polite about it. “I’m going to the library. Chivalry is dead anyway, just like it should be. I don’t need a man to walk me around.”

Not that this boy was a man, but she didn’t want to be too insulting, even if it was the truth.

"Haven." he said as to get the name in his mouth. He like the sound of it. It sounded just like a princess name. Sweet but soft with a nice tone to it. He wondered if she was secretly a princess, which meant he had to be on his best behavior. "Well hello there Miss Heaven, my name is Winston is it's awfully nice to meet you." he said with a great big smile.

He walked by her smiling at the things in sight. Yep, that's right he was walking the princess of school to her next class and that's right you may not harm her because Sir Winston was here to help! And if you were to harm her Sir Winston would stop you before you do is what his smile said in his head but to others it just looked like the boy was being overly friendly with everyone in the school, which was almost all the time.

Not going to class, check. Going to the library, instead, another check. chivalry is dead...uncheck. Ok, he knew she was princess but he had to disagree with her on this. chivalry was not dead, not dead at all. He shot her a confused look and began to talk. "No, i'm sorry but it's not. Chivalry is still here and sadly most people do abide to it. But I'm still here I know for sure that it does still live even if it's just me that abides to it." he said in a righteous voice. Usually he would easily agree to other but this time she was wrong and he had to say something because he knew it wasn't dead and he wasn't going to let anyone tell him otherwise. "And I'm sorry but since chivalry is certainly not dead I'm going to walk you to the library. Plus a princess like you needs a knight just encase harm comes to you." he said fully intended to walk her there.

If there was one thing Haven was absolutely certain about, it was that she wasn’t a princess. Her dad might call her that sometimes, but that was usually to tease her since he knew she was particularly fond of it. He knew princesses weren’t real just as well as she did.

Well, alright, there were still princesses left in the world, but it wasn’t like fairytales or Disney movies at all, nor did Haven think it should be, since those sorts of things were for gullible little kids who’d believe anything you told them about princesses and magic. Haven, on the other hand, wasn’t gullible, nor was she a little kid. She had to have proof, she had to do her research. Otherwise it all ended up sounding like a bunch of hogwash.

“I’m not a princess,” she announced, turning to begin making her way down the hall again. She continued talking as she did so, figuring Winston was going to follow her whether she’d asked him to or not. “I don’t want to be a princess. I want to be a famous figure skater, and then after that I want to be a successful business woman like my mom.”

Who wanted to be a princess anyway? They just got locked in towers or poisoned with apples or cursed by evil witches. There wasn’t any fun in that. It didn’t make them powerful or important or influential. It just made them unfortunate, and then fortunate to be saved—in some way or another—by a prince.

She was doubly certain she didn’t need a prince. Not a knight, either.

“You should go back to your friends,” she advised. “Aren’t you going to get into trouble for not being in class?”

"Oh.." he said quietly. Unsure what to say next. He had never had someone shut down all his ideas like that and he wasn't really sure what to do. He had to stay positive! His mommy said that if he stayed positive then good things would happen and maybe the good thing would be that Haven would become his friend. He needed older friends, so he figure that she was a good choice.
"Well that's good too! I be you will be a wonderful ice skater/business woman. Maybe a ice skater princess! I never heard of one but it sounds super duper cool!" he said in a cheerful, hoping that this would work and she would follow along with the idea. He just had to stay positive and he was sure that Haven would be his next friend.

He looked to her and shook his head. "No! I'm not. It's recess time for the younger kids in school actually so I have a lot of time on my hands, all to helping you to get to the library!" he said with a big smile.

“You don’t have to help,” Haven announced, deciding she’d much rather stay on that topic than try to convince some younger kid that she didn’t want to be a princess—any type of princess, even a Disney on Ice princess, because that was still just little kid stuff in her opinion and she liked to think she was way too old to be a little kid.

She glanced at Winston out of the corner of her eye, trying to decide what she wanted to do about him. She could always just shoo him away. She was telling the truth when she said she didn’t need any help. She’d made the trip from class to the library so many times she could get there in her sleep, or with all the lights off, or walking blindfolded, and she wasn’t carrying so many books that they were too heavy for her—that would be pointless, and so she never carried more than she could handle on her own, because it wasn’t like there were very many people around offering to help her if she took on too many.

Which had her considering Winston a bit more carefully, because while it was true that she could handle the trip on her own, it was also true that there weren’t very many people who were actually nice to her or bothered to spend any sort of time with her at school, and she figured it’d be pretty stupid to turn someone down when they actually did.

Also, it might be nice to have a little runt scurrying after her and carrying her books like she was his boss or something.

“Okay, fine,” she finally said, coming to a stop in the middle of the hall so that she could turn to Winston and hand over her stack of books. She wasn’t even all that concerned that he’d probably see she’d checked out a bunch of books on monsters, because he was little and probably believed in that stuff anyway, and she could always figure out some way to make her research sound less juvenile than it was. “You can carrying my books for me if you really want to help. I have to turn them back in, and then I might check some more out if I can find any that might be useful.”

"But I have to. It's my duty Ms. Haven." he said quickly in rebuttal. He didn't like arguing with people but he had to make a point. He was sure that after awhile she would figure out that he was there to help her and she would be happy to have a knight like him, by her side.

Not that he didn't think she could make it but these hallways weren't always the safest of places and he wouldn't be able to forgive himself if something happen to her. What if she got milk thrown at her or worse a swirly. If he was there he could stop all of that or at lest take it for her for she wouldn't have to deal with it. So in his head it made perfect sense to stay by her side even if she didn't want the help. Everyone needed help and he knew that so sooner or later she would cave.

SUCESS! He knew. She needed his help and he was there to help her. He gave her a wide smile and quickly grabbed the books happily. He gave a small "ouf" sound as they were a little more heavier then he expect but cleared that away by giving her a even bigger smile. He quickly glanced at the books and saw that they were about monster and tilted his head. Maybe she was getting followed by monster which meant that she really needed a knight around her to protect her. "Ms. Haven! Are Monster following you around? Is that why you have all these books about monster? I know a lot about them because I watch a lot of monster flicks and superheros movies and I read tons of comic! So I would be very good help in learning about them! I promise!" he said looking to her happily.

“I’m not looking up the sort of monsters you see in movies and read in comics,” Haven replied, falling into motion to once again begin making her way down the hall. She glanced over her shoulder to make sure Winston was keeping up, and almost stopped to offer to take a few books back and carry them herself, but she sort of liked the idea of having a lackey.

No, no, she couldn’t call him that. That sounded too… mean. Or something. And Haven liked to think she wasn’t really mean, even if she could be sometimes.

Secretary, she decided. She’d think of him like a secretary. Her mom had a secretary who took notes and sent emails and answered phones and made appointments and kept track of meetings for her. Clearly a secretary was exactly what Haven needed if this kid insisted on tagging along and helping her out.

“I’m trying to figure out what’s going on in the city,” she said, looking over her shoulder once more. She paused to snap her fingers in an impatient “keep up” gesture she saw her mom use on people from time to time. “Don’t you pay attention to the news? There’s all this talk about strange things happening, and once I heard-…”

She cut herself off, not entirely sure she wanted to share any of the stuff Peter had told her. She didn’t have much proof that he was telling the truth anyway. More than likely he was just trying to get her to look like an idiot.

Stupid boys.

"Oh", is all he said to that. He hoped it was that because he was an expert at that kind of thing but alas it wasn't. Which made him wonder, what other monster could it be. If it wasn't monsters like the one in the comics and the T.V. shows then it couldn't be a monster.....it had to be BAD GUYS! That's right, that what it had to be. Bad guys, like Lex luther. Winston didn't like that guy, didn't like him at all. First, he was superman arch-enemy and second, he was just plain bad. The WORST of the WORST! Couldn't stand him.

What got him from his thought process of how much he despised Lex Luther was her snapping. He lightly jumped and ran to her side. "City, yeah...right.. got it." he said hoping that what she was talking about. He had heard city somewhere it must of came from her mouth. "Oh! You mean the terrorist, right? Those aren't monster Miss. Haven. Those are bad guys and I know a lot about bad guys. They are just up to evil and want to hurt all the people in town. We need people to save us from those evil guys. Someone who is for justice, only and taking down the bad guys and putting them in jail, Miss. Haven! That's how we get rid of them! I'm sure of it. Like superman! We need a superman, Miss. Haven, then you'll be alright. But don't worry too much because I'm here and I will protect you form the bad guys and that's a promise." He finished looking at her.

Haven looked over her shoulder again to give Winston another odd look, then sighed lightly in exasperation.

“I don’t really need anyone to protect me,” she said as nicely as she possibly could, since he seemed to be pretty attached to the idea. “I can take care of myself.”

She would have continued to talk about the things she knew about these so called “terrorists,” but she was still trying to find out if what Peter had told her was the truth or not, and until she knew for sure she thought it was a better idea to keep most of it to herself. Even if it was real, how could she expect anyone to believe her when she didn’t even have the proof. Which was part of the reason her research was so important—it was what would lead her to the truth.

Or it would all just turn into a dead end, which seemed to be the case with the way things were going at the moment.

“I don’t know anything about bad guys,” she said cautiously, continuing on her way to the library with her new secretary in toe. “There might be people who fight the monsters, though, but I can’t prove it, and I guess they’d sort of be like super heroes, or maybe they’re all bad. None of the books in the library have been very helpful in figuring it all out. I’ve read some newspaper articles and seen stuff online, but just because it’s online doesn’t mean it’s true, and the articles might be biased. I just want to know where the monsters come from if they really do exist,” she admitted, lowering her voice a bit so none of the other kids in the hall would hear her.

He looked at her once she finished her statement like a wounded animal. Why couldn't she take his help. Everyone needed it sooner or later. Just look at the situation now, he was helping her carry her books and yet she still refuses to let him protect him, which just didn't make sense to the seven year old. "Well what if I could protect if you only really really needed?" he said in almost a begging manner.

He had to get a yes. In was in his nature to him and he wanted to protect her from the monster that had frighten her. It was in his code to help anyone who was scare of frighten. Nothing scared him so it he could take down these guys with no problem. Obvious she was scare so she needed some type of help.

He smiled. Now she was entering his territory. He had read and mother had read to him so many comic books that he could sight some just from his memory and this sounded just like something out of it. "Well I'm sure there are people who fight the monster. If there wasn't then they would have already took ahold the city. That's easy to answer. I bet they want to keep their identities eir hidden for the monster wouldn't be able to track them down and hurt them and their families. I think you should read some comic books. It sounds like something right out of them. I have tons at home if you want to read them. It would help you figure out how this all going down and I'm sure I have an idea how this is going down." he said.

He like this kind of stuff. He was a pro at it. He had read enough to be a pro about and he was just glad that he caught Haven when she was walking down the hallway to help her.

Haven sighed when she noticed the look on the kid’s face. Was she upsetting him? She hadn’t meant to. She didn’t like to think of herself as a mean person. She was just… very particular.

“Okay, fine, you can protect me if I really, really need to you,” she allowed.

She didn’t think she’d ever need him to. He was, what? Five? Okay, so he was probably a little older than that, but the point was he was younger than she was, and smaller, and still just a little kid when it came down to it. Realistically—or, at least, realistically to Haven—she should be the one protecting him. She was older and probably smarter and likely a lot more clever than an innocent little kid who thought he was a knight or her own personal super hero or something. If he really believed in this stuff, that would get him into a lot of trouble.

But maybe it would be for the best to let him believe what he wanted to believe for now. It’d keep him from getting too upset, and she get his help out of the arrangement. As much as Haven liked to do things on her own—or worked better on her own sometimes whether she liked it or not—she had to admit the company, at least, was alright.

Just alright.

She couldn’t, like, ruin her reputation as a loner and a bossy know-it-all or anything like that.

“I don’t know about comic books,” she said as gently as she could, trying not to make a face at how ridiculous the idea sounded to her. “You mean like Superman and Batman, right? I think this is a little different than that. Aren’t most of the bad guys they fight people? I don’t think what I’m looking for is a person or something man-made.”

Not that she had any idea what she was looking for in the first place.

Great! He knew that she would cave sometime or another! He just knew that all he had to do was wait a little bit and she would say what he wanted to hear.

Even if she was a bit older and bigger then him that didn't mean anything. Winston was good for a lot of things. He was quicker then most kids his age and smaller then them so he could get in tiny places, that a lot of people could get into. He was very proud of that skill.

As she talked he looked at her was a very serious face. "I'm sorry to disagree with you Haven, but I know these things and I know that they are more then likely fighting other people or thing people are controlling. It's always like that. There are some really horrible people out there and it's sad to know this." he said with a very somber tone.

Haven gave Winston yet another odd expression, confused by his response because it actually sounded really serious when a little kid like that shouldn’t, by all rights, know anything about anything serious.

Then again, he was probably just lost in his own little fantasy world of superheroes fighting bad guys and saving innocent civilians in the process (usually attractive women), or else failing and moping around feeling sorry for themselves until the city (and said attractive women) needed their help again. It was the typical story-line wasn’t it? But that didn’t mean it was real. Maybe monsters might be (she was still trying to figure that out), but that didn’t mean all off that silly superhero stuff had to be, too.

She was already having a hard time coming to terms with the whole monster thing. It was going to take a while before she could accept anything else.

“Okay, well…” she tried, wracking her brain for something to say that wouldn’t dash his fantasies but wouldn’t make it seem as if she particularly believed it either. “I’ve heard some things, but… I don’t know. I don’t have proof yet. That’s what I’m looking for.”

She nodded toward the books he was holding for her. There hadn’t been any proof in them so far, and she was sort of beginning to doubt she’d find proof in any others, but when Haven Sinclair set her mind to figuring something out, she wasn’t about to give up without trying really, really, really hard first.

She was only on her first “really.”

“You can help me find proof if you want, but since you’re little,” she paused and added ‘and my secretary’ in her thoughts, “you have to listen to what I say and only help as much as I tell you to, because this stuff might be dangerous and I don’t really want to get in trouble. This is just research and observation. We’re not superheroes, okay?”
