Mael was stretched out on a rock. It was a good day just to be lazy he thought. Though, to him, everyday was a good day to be lazy. He always did some running in the morning when he first woke up so he would stay in shape, but that was usually it for his activities. Until recently he didn't even hunt for himself. Instead he would just ask his family to do it for him. That was the life. However his family told him to leave, and for no good reason! Now he was stuck trying to hunt for himself. He let out a sigh. His attempts to catch prey had been pretty terrible so far. All his catches had been injured creatures. It made him feel pathetic, not being able to hunt properly. He wished that he could just find someone to hunt for him. Wasn't that why there were others around? To help him.
As he thought about food, his stomach made a growling sound. He rolled over in hopes that it would stop. Right now was not a good time to hunt, he thought. Now was the time for him to rest. His stomach didn't agree with that at all though. It growled even louder now. He hated it when he was hungry. It made his life so difficult.
After it growled one more time, he got up off his rock. He looked around for a moment to see if there was anything worth hunting. To his luck he found a herd of gazelles. “Thank the gods,” he said with a grin. He stayed his distance from them, in hopes they wouldn't notice him. If he just scared them away, it wouldn't do him any good. He would be patient and figure out how he should attack his prey.

Life had been strange since she and her half sister had joined the racing pride. They hadn't had to hunt for themselves, and all they had to do was race. Not that Fion did that much. She much rather cheer on her half sister. There was even healers to ensure they were fit and well. To Fion it was pampering.
Feeling a bit restless, she'd told her sister that she was going for a short hunting trip that morning. Fion had set out with a mind to bring some fresh game back for her sister and herself. She had quickly hit upon a gazelle herd track and began following it. The cheetahess had felt herself relaxing as she stretched her limbs out away from the pressure of the pride. The lions expected them to win. It could be nerve wracking to one such as herself, but others, like her sister, thrived on it.
Fion had trailed the herd for quite a ways. Waiting for the right opportunity to launch an attack. She got as close as she could without spooking the herd and waited. Eyes intently on her prey that she didn't notice when another cheetah joined the hunt. When a young buck separated from the herd for just a moment, Fion sprang into action. She felt her muscles bunch then she was flying over the ground. Was this how her sister felt when she raced? Her tail flipped side to side as she made tight turns to keep up with her prey. In a matter of moments she had the young buck down and its throat clamped in her jaws as she panted through her nose.

Mael was about to go for the kill, when he saw another cheetah going after one the of bucks. He let himself relax. Now what he what was he going to do? The pack was now aware of the the hunters, they wouldn't be an easy catch anymore. He almost turned away to find a new spot to hunt, when he was struck with an idea. Why should he bother to hunt? That cheetah had caught a meal. Perhaps she would be interested in sharing. He was sure that he could persuade her.
He headed over there, running slowly, but gracefully. During his free time he worked on running gracefully. It wasn't much help hunting, but it made him feel more 'proper'. He eyed the cheetah, realizing she was female. A smirk fell on his maw. Now was the time to be charming, he thought. Then he reminded himself to not be rude, that he did not need to speak everything that came to mind. It would be much better to make a good first impression.
Once he was close enough to her, he grinned. "Good evening! That was some good hunting you did there." He said, sitting down near her, though not too close. If she was temper mental Mael wanted to be sure that he could escape. He wasn't a fighter, that was for sure. "I am new to this area and I was wondering if you would be interested in some company? I would hate to see a cheetah eating alone. It is such a sad sight."

Her kill was soon properly dead, and Fion let go to give her lips a lick. It had been a good hunt and swift kill. Her sister would be proud. She was just thinking that she needed to get it back before someone bigger came to steal her kill. Like magic her thoughts appeared to make one, well appear. Already? the female thought, with exasperation.
Fion watched the male warily. Just because he was a cheetah too, didn't mean he wasn't down for dirty tricks. She gave a small nod as he complimented her hunting. It had been good. She realized then that he might also have been hunting that herd. Now his chances were pretty slim. As he tried to pretty much invite himself to join her kill, Fion looked down her nose at him.
"Well then you should be happy to know that I will not be dinning alone. My sister is waiting for me to return home with our dinner." There was no way she was going to let someone else steal this hard won meal. She flicked her ear as he mentioned he was new to the area. Obviously he wouldn't know about the pride where lions fed cheetahs just to see them race.
"My sister and I joined a pride where the cheetahs race all day. The lions do most of the hunting and we're guarded from others well. Do you intend to just pass through?" She wasn't sure why she'd bothered to tell him about the pride.

Well, this wasn't going according to plan, he thought. Mael continued to grin though. "I am glad you have company then, though wouldn't a new face be welcoming? Not only am I a good looking, but I also have been told that I am great for conversations. You and your sister would definitively not get bored" He gave her a playful wink.
When she talked about her pride, he listened carefully. A pride where lions hunted for cheetah, where they were protected! How had he never heard of this pride before. "No, I just happen to travel here. Your pride sounds interesting. It is interesting how the lions hunt for the cheetahs. So all you have to do is race all day?" This pride sounded like something he could get into. He wasn't a racer, but it didn't look too hard.
"How does one join the pride?" he asked curiously. He imagined the pride being a cheetah paradise. He wanted to know everything about the pride and see if maybe it was the pride for him.

Fion looked at the male as if she was really considering his proposition. How was he to know that she and her sister could easily watch races if they didn't want to be bored? Not that she was going to tell him. She didn't trust this cheetah, or his motives. Maybe he would be agree to be a jester in return for any scraps. "What subjects do you know?" It didn't hurt to ask.
She gave a careful nod. Where was he from? "Well there's training and stuff too." Fion gave a shrug, "you just apply." That's what she and her sister had done. She doubted anyone would be turned away unless there wasn't something right. The more cheetahs probably the better. Now she watched him again. Then a thought occurred to her, from her recent conversation with her sister. "Some cheetahs get lion owners that help them train."

Mael laughed nervously. That was a good question. What subjects could he talk about. The only real knowledgeable thing he knew was how to look good and that was something that couldn't be taught in his opinion. Finally he let out a sigh, "Well my fine cheetahess, I am not very clever, but you probably figured that one out. The things I know about would probably bore you and your sister, so I think it would be rude of me to talk about those things. Company should not bore their companions. Instead I think I would just talk about how beautiful and wonderful my company is. Tell them jokes here and there and perhaps a couple stories about my many adventures."
And by many adventures he meant telling lie after lie.
"Lion owners? Hm, that's different. But owners take care of the cheetah why own right? Make sure they are happy, do whatever the cheetah wants them to do?" He asked curiously. Once he saw the pride for himself he was pretty sure he would join up. It just seemed to perfect, an oasis in a dessert. He would never have to hunt again and all he had to do was run fast. He could do that. He was a cheetah after all. That's what they were good for.
"Would a lovely lady like yourself be interested in showing me to your pride. Because it is starting to sound like my kind of place," he said. "Plus I would get the chance to be escorted by a beautiful cheetahess. I could even help carry your catch. Promise I won't take a bite out of it." He gave her a wink.

She glanced at him for his nervous laugh. That didn't sound good. Fion gave him a bit of a skeptical look as he said he'd talk about how beautiful the company was. He hadn't even met her sister. And honestly, how long could he keep on that subject without boring them? This was sounding less and less appealing. Oh adventures; her sister might like to hear those stories, but Fion wasn't sure she would.
She gave a toss of her head. "You don't have to. My sister and I don't, and I doubt we ever will. We have each other." Fion gave a nod to each of his questions though she hesitated at the last part. The lion's were the cheetah's slaves. "It's a partnership." She tried to clarify. The white cheetahess refrained from doing or saying anything rude. He seemed like a loafer to her, but if she showed him the pride he could go pester someone else.
So she nodded again, though she defiantly picked up her kill herself. Perhaps she was taking him to the pride, but that didn't mean she trusted him not to take off with her kill given a chance. The look she gave him made that utterly clear.

Mael realized that his flirting wasn't really getting him anywhere. When had it ever, he thought with a sigh. Perhaps her sister would be easier to charm? Heck he was going to a new pride, he was sure there would be plenty of cheetahess to flirt with.
"Alright," he said with a nod. As long as he got into the pride, he wouldn't worry about getting food. He was sure he would find someone who would like to share a meal with him. "A partnership sounds good to me. I run, a lion trains me and gives me food. I think that's a pretty balanced friendship. Just got to find the right lion of course." He knew he couldn't get along with everyone, but if he were to join the pride he would want a lion who he could be friends with.
He watched her carry the catch, a bit disappointed that she wouldn't let him carry it. No matter, at least she was showing him to the pride, he thought with a grin. "Thank you for the opportunity." He said, keeping pace with her. "My name is Mael by the way. I guess if we might be pride members together we should know each others names." He tried not to flirt, but it was proving difficult. He did not want to anger her by flirting too much.

Club Snails Fin. You can do a wrap up post if ya like. Fionnuala resigned herself to putting up with him for the duration of the trip back. If nothing else, she would get Aoife to run him off. Until then, she'd play along. She gave him a glance. At least he'd gotten the idea that the lions weren't slaves to the cheetahs. She nodded. Her and Aoife were going to be so picky if they chose a lion; so much so that it'd probably never happen.
It was a bit awkward to walk with the dead carcass hanging between her legs, but she managed it. She blinked as he thanked her. "Mmmmf," she replied with a 'welcome', though it was rather muffled by her catch. Her eye glanced toward him again as he gave his name. She made an effort to be understood around the gazelle in her mouth, "Fionnuala." That was hard, and she wasn't going to make anymore attempts to talk while they were going back.
