It had taken Jordan some internal debate to decide who to ask about this particular matter; a number of people he trusted for discreet assistance in most things weren't options here, for one reason or another. Eventually, though, he'd decide to ask Candace. She should be up to the task, and he had a sneaking feeling that she'd be amused by the request.

Her room wasn't far. He knocked n the door; if she wasn't in right now he'd just come back later.

It didn't take long for Candace to answer the door. She was awake, relaxed and even dressed for a lazy as hell day. For once she hadn't been caught in the middle of anything except sitting around reading a book. A leisure book. She stood surprised in the doorway, obviously not expecting to find Jordan coming to see her. She likes him, sure, but Candace didn't think she was usually at the top of his 'visit and hang out for whatever reason' list. Nevertheless she grinned and stepped aside, an arm held out toward the interior of the apartment. "Hey! What's up? Come on in." The door was closed behind him after Jordan was inside and Candace moved away from the door to collect her book and put it aside.

"Hey," Jordan said, smiling, and followed Candace in. "I'd say I just came by to see what was up, but I'm sure you'd deduce sooner or later that I had an ulterior motive, so I might as well just come out and say so right away. When's your next leave scheduled for, and would you mind doing me a favor then?"

He craned his neck a little for a look at the book, curious as to what she'd been reading.

She grinned. "You never know. You're one of few people on this island I don't feel is only out for his own agenda anytime he goes to see someone, though." Candace was very amused by his introduction. Her next leave? She blinked and looked away, lips pouted thoughtfully. Did she have an actual plan to leave? Nothing concrete. "That is a very good question. I think right now I'm just going to say as soon as they lift the ban from leaving I'm taking the first portal to wherever." A favor, huh? She did owe Jordan for his help before. Bix had only wanted a haircut, she was curious what Jordan wanted.

Candace caught the look Jordan was giving her book and she blushed, picking up the book again to show the cover of Crime and Punishment. "Borrowing it from someone." She explained quietly before setting the book down on the coffee table again. It was a very heavy story, and H was right about it not being very comfortable, but Candace was intrigued by it anyway. "Oh! Can I get you anything? I don't have much since it's been awhile since I could get my own food." Stupid lockdown. "But I've got drinks and snacks left."

"Maybe I have an agenda for my own personal entertainment or something," Jordan mock-protested. He chuckled and stuck his hands in his pockets, looking slightly sheepish. "But yeah - I wanted to ask for your help in picking up a special order. Food, which is why I'm asking about the timing. I'd have to schedule leave enough time beforehand to place an order and also know when I could ask for it to be ready to be picked up."

His eyebrows went up at the choice of reading material. "I read that in high school," he said. "Wouldn't be my choice of light reading. Interesting stuff, though."

At the offer of a snack, he nodded. "Sure - any iced tea or bottled water?"

"Then you hide your intentions well. Good on you." Candace even gave Jordan a golf clap for his admission. Ooh! A special order? That was interesting! Why couldn't Jordan pick it up himself? Scandal? Embarrassment? A surprise he couldn't be caught picking up? "Yeah, no. I don't have any set plans. Even if I use a day or two, we get four days anyway." She was flexible. She'd save a day for playing Jordan's delivery girl; it was the least Candace could do after he'd helped her.

Nodding, Candace looked down at the book. "I read it while waiting for him to come back, and he let me borrow it so I could finish it. It's definitely not a light book, but I'm liking it." She didn't feel a need to specify who 'he' was. It wasn't important for the conversation.

"I do have iced tea, actually! I'll be right back. Make yourself at home~." Candace disappeared into the kitchen to get the drinks, pouring two glasses and returning with one offered out to the Sun hunter.

"So," She sat down on the couch and pat the seat beside her as invitation for Jordan to join. "A special food order? What am I playing delivery girl for?"

Jordan chuckled and nodded. "Thanks. I'll need to put in the order a week ahead, so once we can get off the island again I can schedule it with you - that sound okay?"

He had a guess as to who owned the book, but he wasn't about to say anything about that; he still felt awkward and irritable about the subject, and generally handled that by avoiding it. Nope. All the nope. "At least you don't have to write a paper and present a skit about your book report," he said lightly instead.

He accepted the iced tea with a nod of thanks and sat down on the couch beside Candace, offering her that slightly sheepish smile again. "Just the best tamales in the world."

A paper, sure. A paper made sense. There were a lot of things you could write about in this boo-- "A skit. They made you act out a scene from this.." Candace looked horrified yet somehow still amused. What scene?! High school? College? That was just...weird.

Thankfully it was weirder than Jordan's request. Candace laughed, tilting her head to one side. Tamales? "What makes these tamales so great, and why can't you pick them up yourself?"

"We did the murder, of course," Jordan laughed. "Ninth grade, all of three kids in a class of twenty-five who read the toughest book on the assignment list. I thought we did a pretty good job on the acting, but nobody was really paying attention. High school English class." He shrugged.

"As for the first part of your question," he replied, "I'll let you reserve judgment on that until you can taste one. The second part - well, it's my aunt who makes them." He smiled, an expression with a faint tinge of sadness to it. "This will only work if I ask somebody with enough discretion and self-control to act as a complete stranger so that there's no reason to make any connections back to me."
PostPosted: Mon Sep 24, 2012 12:37 am

"You would think a bunch of high schoolers would pay attention to a murder, even an acted one." Kids. Ninth grade..what was that teacher even thinking.

Oooh! She got to have one! Awesome, that sounded more like it. Candace made a happy little noise at that, cutting it off when the second answer came. Oh..that was why. Her grin softened to a small smile as she watched the man beside her. That was why. Even after what, a year and a half? Anyone would recognize a missing, presumably dead, family member in a heartbeat. The mention of Jordan's aunt was a reminder she could never see her own dad again either...it didn't bother her unless she really thought hard about it. She cleared her throat and ruffled her hair a bit, distracting herself with her drink.

Pride blossomed in Candace's chest at the last thing Jordan said. He trusted her! He could easily have asked Rep, or Harrison, or anyone else! But no, he asked her. "I'm flattered! This wouldn't be my first time doing something like this. Lance asked me to get some roses for him a few months back and turned it into a training exercise where I did something similar to this." Except she ended up coming back later to steal the flowers. No, this time it would be honest. She liked that. Plus she could possibly meet his aunt, right? That could be fun. "..I could get a picture of her too, if you like. A discreet candid one...if you want, I mean. Something nice to look at." She shrugged like it wasn't a big deal and smiled again.

"Nobody did." Jordan laughed. "It was a waste of an excellent performance. Either that or we sucked a lot more than we thought we did. We got an A for the overall project, though."

His smile brightened at the extra offer. "That'd be nice," he agreed. "The pickup would be at the weekend farmer's market, so it shouldn't be too hard to get a picture. The vendors are used to tourists snapping artsy photos."
PostPosted: Mon Sep 24, 2012 12:49 am

Candace scoffed. "Kids just don't appreciate art. Bastards."

Oooh, really? That added on a new possibility then! Maybe she wouldn't have to be candid after all! "Then she wouldn't find it too strange if I made her smile for the camera then, huh? I know I'd love a new picture of my dad, see how he's doing, so I figured a picture of your aunt would be nice to have...what's she like?"

"I think the word you're looking for," Jordan said gravely, "is philistines."

He smiled a little. "Play tourist and she won't bat an eye." What was Tia Rosa like? He considered the question. "She's tiny and sweet, but don't let that fool you," he said, and grinned. "If you step out of line, she'll kick your a** and have you thanking her politely for it."
PostPosted: Mon Sep 24, 2012 1:45 pm

"Playing tourist won't be hard at all, especially after being stuck here for however ******** long it's been since I could leave." Candace chuckled and turned so her back was against the arm of the couch. "I'll see what I can do."

Tiny and sweet. She knew a few people like that here. "She sounds delightful. I can't wait to meet her." Candace meant it. She wanted to meet this tiny little spitfire of a woman and try these tamales that Jordan said were the best in the world. "Where am I going to be going? I forget where you're from.."

"Thanks," Jordan said, giving Candace a sincere smile. "Can't go back, but hey, a little bit of a treat from home would be nice after all this stress."

He chuckled as Candace said she'd like to meet Tia Rosa; he didn't expect that Candace would manage to get the sharp end of his aunt's moods, so it probably would be an amiable encounter. "California," he told Candace. "Specifically, San Luis Obispo.
