Look At Me!

Two days have passed IC since the last RP. Captain Ruzanski has spent most of them fairly silent, other than assigning watches when they stop for the night. If members of his band vanish for short periods, he does not ask where they have been. Mostly he has been deep in thought.

The captain's silence has been filled by the often ridiculous, near-constant babble of unsolicited advice, instructions, and commentary Galning offers. Whether people have paid him any mind is a matter of personal choice. Fortunately, now that they have reached the coast he seems to have been silent. At least for the time being.

Now that they have reached the coast there is another problem, and that has been the source of Ru's silence. Sea monsters do not simply appear because someone wants them to. They tend to appear according to their own whims. Since it is impossible to predict the whimsy of a sea monster, the band will have to see if they can lure one close enough to shore to be slaughtered.

How It Works

Everyone posts with their character doing something to try to get a sea monster's attention. Roll 1d4 for every character, every post. When the dice rolls add up to 100, the band has met with success.

For example, Ru tries shouting at the ocean and I roll 1d4 in that post. Someone else posts that their lion joins him and also rolls 1d4. Ru tries to harmonize with that person as they shout and I roll 1d4. A third lion throws a rock in the water and rolls 1d4. And so on and so forth until they reach 100.

There is no post order, but you may not post directly after yourself.

This will end when the amounts rolled add up to 100.

If you do not own a Stormborn on this viking and wish to participate, you may post as some sort of shore creature (seagull, crab, turtle, beached dolphin, whatever) that is helping, hindering, observing, offering advice, or whatever else you think they might be doing.

Oh, and there may be participation incentives.

Asper was eager to get things going. In truth, their travels so far had been uneventful - and to be honest, he wasn't even sure if he believed in such things as sea monsters. Galning's constant chatter was wearing on his last Gods damned nerves.

Ru had been ridiculously quiet, not that Asper could blame him for that, but it was time to set things in motion and Asper wasn't really certain how to accomplish such a thing. With an annoyed grunt directed at Galning, Asper pulled up next to his cousin and let loose a mighty, shrieky roar.

He felt like an idiot, really, screeching at the ocean, but perhaps this would be the key to gaining the attention of one.

If they truly existed, anyway.

Galning was delighted when they reached the shore. He hadn't realized how accustomed he had grown to unconsciously feeling the rumble of waves at all times until the band had gotten far enough away that he couldn't do so anymore. He supposed that was proof that the Stormborn really was where he belonged.

"Asper, can you believe we're here?" he enthused, only to fall momentarily silent at the horrible noise his cousin made. "What are you doing? You sound like a hippo stepped on your paw. You don't seriously think that's going to summon a sea monster, do you?"

Not that Galning knew s**t about summoning sea monsters, but he couldn't believe shrieking was going to work. Sea monsters live beneath the water, and water makes sound work funny. First you have to get it to come to the surface. He began flinging rocks into the water.

Unlike the stormborn, who probably at least knew something about the sea monsters they sought, Aluka knew absolutely nothing. Aside form the fact that they were supposedly monsters, and presumably big and dangerous. And they lived in the ocean. Great! The sea was vast and mysterious and they were trying to take a powerful being out of somewhere where it was definitely more at home than they were.

Still, not a quitter, she went along with the others. Aluka didn't really have friends in this bunch, so she didn't attach herself to anyone in particular. She contemplated the rolling waves, then Asper and Galning.

Shrugging, she stepped into the water. She didn't want to stay out here long if they were trying to attract a monster! Assuming it was big, she hoped the water where she was standing was shallow enough to keep her... mostly safe. Aluka dunked her head into the water and screamed in there.

She regretted it immediately, of course! Salt water was very different from fresh, and she didn't like the taste must. Not wanting to make a scene, she waded to even shallower waters. Ugh.

"Well, she's got the right idea, then, cousin. Or maybe we could throw you into the ocean and see if your scrawny form looks delectable enough to eat." Asper gestured towards Aluka, doing his very best to stifle a loud laugh. The briny ocean water was undoubtedly burning her eyes and tongue, but she had spunk even if she was terribly misguided.

Not that he was being successful at summoning a sea monster simply by screeching at the endless waves before them.

At any rate, Asper hefted a sodden piece of driftwood in his mouth and threw it back into the sea. He pressed his lips together and gave his cousin a shrug.

Who knew?

Ru stalked along the water's edge, letting the waves strike him. He was too close to the shore not to be threatened with being bowled over by every wave, but his weight sank his paws into the wet sand and helped to anchor him.

This was not something he and the band had really discussed, and probably he should have done, but what was there to discuss except how nobody knew how to summon a sea monster anyway. Perhaps he should have asked the goddess if she could help with that, but it hadn't occurred to him at the time.

As he passed by Galning and his cousin Asper he overheard Galning mutter, "Why don't we use her as bait? She's small enough we could yank her back quickly."

"If we're going to use bait," Ru said, leaning close to Galning, "it would be glorious to volunteer. Perhaps you should impress us all by doing so."

"What are doing?"

The sea bird was most definitely baffled. He'd seen lions before, but never lions doing what these ones were doing. Had they gone mad? The gull tilted his wings slightly as he remained aloft on the currents of air, his voice rough and very much like the sound of a gull's high pitched laughing. He was not sure he felt safe enough landing around the bunch, given their queer behavior, yet he knew his likelihood of getting back into the air, should one take a swing at him, was high.

He made his decision when he landed with a hop and a skip several tail lengths from the group of stormborn. He folded his gray wings and turned his head to one side, bobbing slightly as he sought to get a better view of the unusual lot.

"Roaring, yes? Throwing, yes? What for you attack ocean? She swallow you up you make her mad." He clacked his beak in slight amusement, yet was wary of the predators. As if to mock them, he cawed loudly at the ocean.

Asper rasped out a chuckle at Ru's comment before turning his attention towards the bird that had appeared to mock the band of Reavers.

"Quiet, foolish bird," he harmlessly threatened, no ire in his voice. A bird was a bird, and as far as Asper was concerned - well, a bird was one of the more harmless things in the world. They were small and delicious.

Turning his attention back to his cousin, Asper gave Galning a rough shove against his shoulder before jerking his head in Aluka's direction.

"Bet she could trounce you if you tried to use her as bait."

That being said - and for lack of any better ideas - Asper let out another roar.

Galning couldn't decide who to scowl at first, but decided that his cousin won. He had shoved him and nearly knocked him over. For all that Galning had grown accustomed to ocean sounds, he still didn't swim very well in open water. Yolla was better at it.

"Well, why don't we ask her?" he snarked back at Asper. It wasn't worth it to shout something after Ru. The captain had already made it clear that of all the people who had decided to come with him, Galning was the one he wanted least to deal with. It was trying Galning's resolution to be the perfect reaver.

"Bird, be glad that you are too small to be worthwhile as sea monster bait. Reavers are not to be laughed at!"

Even though she couldn't hear the pair too well from where she was standing, Aluka shot Galning and Asper a glare, assuming whatever they were talking about it would not please her. Still, determined, she waded once again back out into the water, and walked about a bit, occasionally stomping a paw more loudly. She was too light to stay here long, the waves pulled at her uncomfortably!

Irritated, salty and wet, she made her way back to shore again. Enough jumping in the water! She snorted, moving a bit closer to where the others were, mostly because she was interested in the seagull.

Coming from a rather different place, Aluka had no qualms about trying to talk to a bird. they could be very unhelpful, but sometimes... "Hey, bird." She took a few steps towards him, but had no plans of trying to pounce the thing. "D'you know anything about the sea monsters?" Might as well try and use the resources they had. This was the sort of bird that spent a lot of time over the ocean, it must have seen something.

Watching for a while, Munyu contemplated just what this sea monster was. As the waves crashed, he marveled for a moment that this was very different from the waters back home, where everything was more gentle. Or at least, the waves were. He let out a snort, before finding a rock. He went rushing to the water, before throwing the rock out over the waves. "OY! YOU BIG STUPID LOUT, COME OUT HERE AND FACE US! OR ARE YOU AFRAID?!" He stopped, then, noticing the look Aluka was giving Asper and Galning. He frowned, shaking his head. Whatever it was they were planning... It had to be pretty stupid if they got a look like THAT. He backed away from the shore, seeking another rock.

Inyoni looked toward the waves and watched some of the other lions. From what she could tell, they had about as much of a clue as she did. Specifically, none.

She saw the other lioness approach a sea gull and, for a moment, thought she was going to try to eat it. Aluka certainly looked hungry enough. Upon seeing that the thrall was not trying to kill the bird, Inyoni decided to take a closer look.

It was then that she saw something shiny in the sand. Fish scales! The remains of someone's supper she imagined. It smelled strongly enough that Inyoni wasn't about to put it in her mouth. However...

Aborting her previous plan, Inyoni dug her claws into the fish and flung it into the ocean. Maybe the sight of potential food would entice a sea monster.

The gull seemed unbothered by Asper's telling him to hush. He was a gull, after all, and was quite used to it. Nor did Galning's threat ruffle his white and gray feathers. Instead, he tucked a wayward chestfeather with his beak and watched the strange lions through curious, beady eyes. Amusement was clear on his grizzled features as the predators continued to behave oddly. Maybe they were sick? It was only when Aluka moved towards him that he parted his wings and used them for gliding as he took a few tenative hops back. She did not move as though she would attack, thus he did not bother taking to the air.

"Sea... Monster? Lion seek monster, monster big thing, yes? Seen big things before. Big fish. With sharp teeth. Eat little fish. Sometimes animals what come too far off shore."

He cocked his head slightly. Birds were not always truth tellers and seagulls had a less than stellar reputation, but he had very little reason to lie. There were many strange things that often came up from the deep to feed or breach.
