Ganymede rarely, if ever, made it a point to go out seeking people from either the Negaverse or the Dark Mirror Court. He was more than happy to let them go about their business so long as he didn’t catch them harming anyone. He accepted that they were generally bad news, as he’d seen more than his fair share of violence from them—the ambush was still very fresh in his mind, as were the Surrounding and Elysion—but he was also of a mind that they, like he and the senshi, were normal people struggling to make sense of a situation that didn’t really make sense at all.

Perhaps they went about it the wrong way. He could agree to that. Sucking energy out of people or ripping out starseeds or causing other sorts of mayhem wasn’t what he considered a good use of time. Nor did he agree with the precept of “attack first, talk or ask questions later.” That was exactly the sort of behavior that he thought kept the war going far longer than it rightly should have.

After all, what was stopping them all from talking to one another aside from stubbornness and the unwillingness to listen?

Normally when Ganymede sensed the presence of a Negaverse officer during his nightly patrols, he’d make sure they weren’t doing anything terrible before going about his own business and leaving them to theirs. Otherwise, he avoided them when he could, stuck with youma who were typically easier to get rid of and didn’t weigh on his conscience the way another human being would.

“Keeping your nose out of trouble, I hope,” he said that evening as he came upon a low level Nega, keeping his posture at ease in the hopes that his larger power level would not put the girl immediately on the defensive.

He wasn’t looking for a fight—just a quick chat.

It seemed to be a common thing for Mesolite to get so distracted in doing things sometimes, that she didn’t bother to feel what was around her. This time it wasn’t climbing trees or hunger pangs, this time she was putting paperclips into her hair and looping it through, glad that she could much more easily reach most of her hair since it had grown out so much over the last few months.

She was in the process of looping a green paperclip through the end of one strand of hair when she heard a voice speak quite close to her. It was then that she realized there was the feeling of an order person close by too. Well…Remarque would be scolding her for sure for doing something like this! He had told her to keep her guard up at all times…and now it looked like she was going to be in that hypothetical trouble that he had warned her of.

Slowly, the lieutenant looked towards the source of the voice and the energy signature and her mouth fell open.

Well…damn. She was two for two today. It was another hot chick, wearing a really, really attractive outfit. And she had a top hat…she was like a little…a little something! And whatever that something was…Mesolite approved with all of her being.

A heat crept up in the lieutenant’s cheeks and she gave a little smile, embarrassed to be seen with small bits of metal hanging from her head like beads or something. “Uh…hi.”

Ganymede was suspicious.

He shouldn’t have been. It wasn’t like he wanted to catch her doing something wrong. He should be relieved that he hadn’t—and he was!—but he also had to wonder why she wasn’t attacking any of his comrades or sending youma on a rampage around the city or murdering innocent people on their way home.

You know, normal things.

And the fact that all of that could even be considered “normal” in the first place was terribly sad.

Regardless, Ganymede kept his face composed because he still didn’t want to give her any reason to feel threatened, though he took his time in looking her over in case she was faking the dense air and secretly had something nastier than a bunch of paperclips hidden up her sleeve somewhere.

“You trying to make a fashion statement or something?” he wondered. He was partly joking, but she did look rather… odd. “Shouldn’t you be off… I don’t know… spreading chaos? Not that I want you to, but… well, it’s not every day I come across one of you people looking innocent, so you’ll have to forgive me for being a bit suspicious.”

The attractive strong senshi just kept moving closer, and Mesolite gulped. Well…death by a beautiful woman was on her list of top ten ways she wanted to snuff it…so. She supposed it wouldn’t be so bad. She let her mind drift off, imagining all the ways that this beautiful caped senshi could end her life…and she wasn’t sorry to find that well over two thirds of the ways ended up as some sort of erotic fantasy rather than a death scenario.
A stupid grin crossed the lieutenants’ face and she giggled then, twirling a finger around the bit of hair that still held the green paper clip, turning it from an at least slightly artsy thing to a tangled mess.

She jumped when the senshi spoke again, and missed…well, everything that she said. “I’m sorry, what did you say?” Mesolite glanced to her hair and made another noise of surprise. Her hair! Oh damn. That wasn’t good at all…stupid paper clips…

She began struggling to get the bit of metal out of her hair without doing anymore damage. “One minute…”

Mesolite finally wiggled the clip out of her hair then desperately tried to finger comb the knot out, but then just shook her head, sighing. This was something she had to finish up at home, not here. Not when…

Oh yeah. There was an enemy here…

At once, the girl jumped to her feet, brandishing the one green paperclip. “Not an inch closer, senshi! I don’t care how beautiful you are, you and me…we’re on opposite sides of the playing field!”

Luckily for the Negaverse lieutenant, Ganymede had absolutely no intention of killing anybody.

He did, however, pause to give her quite the odd look, lifting his brow at her giggling and the stupid grin, before staring in confusion as she proceeded to wield little more than a paperclip. He blinked, not sure if he should find this intimidating at all. She certainly didn’t look intimidating, nor did a paperclip seem life-threatening, but he supposed there was always the chance that it did something magical that could succeed in incapacitating him for quite a while—long enough for her to get away with a slew of vile acts against humanity.

“You… you’re going to threaten me with a paperclip?” he wondered. “You’re serious? That’s your game?”

Ganymede tried to remind himself again that there could be something else about it that wasn’t nearly as harmless, or even that she could be lulling him into a false sense of security before she decided to pull out the big guns, but he found himself laughing despite himself. It started as quiet snickering he was barely able to stifle, before he decided he just didn’t care anymore and his laughter became more raucous.

“I feel… so sorry… for you,” he said, trying to catch his breath after the laughing fit had slowed. He lifted a hand to wipe an amused tear from his eye. “Sorry, sorry,” he felt the need to apologize, though he wasn’t exactly sure what he was apologizing for. “I’m not here to attack your or anything. I was just making sure you weren’t hurting anyone. Clearly that’s not the case, so… yay, I guess. Sure makes my job easier tonight, unless one of your pals is on their way or something.”

Her posture was tense then grew even tenser as she began to laugh at her. Well…”Fine. Give me a minute, and I”ll show you my real weapon, if you think my paperclip isn’t scary enough for you!” Mesolite reached up, unhooking the other paperclips from her hair. She was quite sure her face was glowing with shame, but finally she put her paperclip chain together, brandishing it at Ganymede. “Aha! There we go. Aren’t you scared now! I am hurting everyone. I mean. I scared them all off with my all mighty power. My paperclips are second to none…”

She sighed then, shrugging. “Okay. So yeah. I got nothing. But. Go easy on me, hot girl. Go easy on me. I don’t want any visible bruises…and if you need to take off my clothes…well. I suppose that’ll be okay too. I suppose.”

The lieutenant shut her eyes and scrunched her face up, ready for a beat down. This senshi was just bluffing, she had to be…but…if she wasn’t…then maybe she had a chance of making it without really getting a terrible beating. One eye opened and she looked at Ganymede. “Uh. You serious about not attacking me? Well. That’s cool.”

Ganymede laughed all through her rambling, pausing only long enough to make sure she really didn’t have more than a string of paperclips at her disposal, and then went right back to laughing his a** off.

“No, no, not going to attack you,” he managed to wheeze out again.

She was a funny one, this girl. He couldn’t tell if she meant to be—he had to assume so, what with her comment about removing her clothes, which wasn’t happening any more than the killing was—or if she was really just… terribly out of place. Ganymede didn’t think he’d ever seen a Negaverse officer who was quite so unimpressive. He was used to pole-arms and knives and smoke bombs and spears, dodging ruthless attacks and protecting kids from the crazed actions of a bunch of psychotic murderers. The worst weapon he could remember encountering thus far was a curling iron, but that girl had actually managed to break a bone in his wrist with it, so it hadn’t been entirely useless.

But paperclips?

“So they really just… send you out here with those?” he wondered, finally managing to calm down. Thinking about it like that, it wasn’t really all that amusing anymore. In fact, it was actually kind of sad.

“What do they expect you to do? File invoices? I thought you guys were supposed to be all big and bad. Total badasses, or whatever. Why don’t they give you something better to go make havoc with? Or are you just pretending to be a failure so you can take me when my back’s turned?”

Her cheeks were burning in both shame and embarrassment as the senshi continued laughing. She was mocking her. Really mocking her…that…was just plain cruel. It wasn’t her fault that she had such a terrible weapon. It wasn’t her fault that she didn’t have anything better yet…

Or maybe it was.

Maybe if she would have trained harder, her weapon would have been better by now. She should have…could have been stronger by now. Was she really such a failure at this that the senshi would all laugh at her instead of attacking?

Mesolite shook her head, scowling and willing the heat to leave her cheeks. “I haven’t earned a better weapon yet, I suppose. I’m not good enough to have anything more than these paperclips.” Her voice was soft, holding both anger and some remorse at the fact she wasn’t stronger yet, the fact she hadn’t been good enough. That was a terrible thought, honestly.

“What does it matter to you, anyway? Leave me alone, senshi. I’m going home. I don’t need to listen to you mocking me. Now you’ve just made me want to get stronger so people like you don’t laugh when they see me coming towards them. Just you wait. When I do become a Captain, I’ll have an amazing weapon and I’ll wipe the smile right off of your face.” There wasn’t much of a push behind her words, none of the passion she normally felt when she talked about becoming a Captain.

She knew it would happen…eventually. Or at least she hoped it would.

“Sorry, I wasn’t trying to mock you,” Ganymede apologized.

It was the truth. He hadn’t meant to mock her specifically. He simply found her amusing. He found her behavior amusing, but when the amusement ran out he realized her circumstance was actually pretty sad. Here she’d devoted herself to people who seemed to want her to prove her worth before allowing her to carry something she could actually use to defend herself with. For all they knew, she could end up getting herself killed in the process, and would they even care? Would it even matter to them? Or would they just find some other poor kid to replace her?

He wasn’t going to harm her if he had any choice in the matter, but that didn’t mean others wouldn’t. Some senshi were no better than her people. It was entirely possible for her to be put in danger by one of his allies.

“Is getting stronger all that matters?” he wondered. “Is that why you come out here, because you want to get stronger? Why should you even have to prove yourself to them? If they don’t believe in you in the first place, if getting stronger is the only thing they want from you, if that’s a requirement and a sign of failure if you don’t reach it, then… why do you do it?”

Needless to say, Ganymede didn’t like that idea. Even as a senshi there were moments when he felt as if he were expected to prove himself to some of the others, but that was a way of thought he’d done his best not to follow to closely. If he was going to prove anything to anyone, he was going to prove it to himself. To hell with what anyone else thought.

“You know,” he continued, “I’ve heard some of your people say some pretty terrible stuff about the senshi, and maybe some of it’s right, and maybe some of us are pretty clueless when we start out, too, but… I don’t know, I guess I don’t really understand why this,” he motioned to the lieutenant and her paperclips, “is supposed to be better.”

She held herself stiffly, looking vastly uncomfortable with how the conversation was going, looking uncomfortable with everything that Ganymede was saying. It wasn’t even things that could be taken as her being angry!

Though, perhaps that was the reason it was so awful. The senshi shouldn’t feel sorry for her. They should feel fear! Fear was the emotion that she should be striking, not pity…not…not whatever it was that Ganymede was feeling right now. But…

Mesolite drew in a breath, trying to rationalize this out, wanting to make it so this wasn’t pity. She was an eternal senshi, she was strong and powerful, and sure, Mesolite might seem like a joke to her. But…The lieutenant let out a laugh as Ganymede again mocked her paperclips.

“Clearly these are better. Maybe not now, but I’m not strong enough yet. My general told me that as I grow in power, my weapon will as well. One of these days, Ganymede, I’m going to see you again, and we’ll have a real fight. And I’ll show you just how much I’ve grown.” She turned her grey eyes on the senshi, looking very serious. “You’ll fear me then, I promise you. In fact, maybe that’s what I’ll strive for. I had just wanted to grow so I could teleport, but now…” She grinned, her old spark lighting once more. “Now I want to grow so I can kick your a**!”

“I can’t tell if that’s bravado talking or if you really mean it,” Ganymede observed.

He certainly wasn’t afraid of her now. He was afraid of a lot of things, but not of her, and at the moment he couldn’t imagine a time in which he would be. He didn’t want to be afraid, not if this was how it began—a mindless, brainless, deluded struggle for power, perhaps for prestige and influence as well. What good was that going to do anyone? What good was it going to do for her or for the people she encountered?

In the end, she didn’t seem any different than any of the other brainwashed fools he assumed were running around letting themselves be manipulated and potentially slaughtered for something that may well be a lie. It was a lie as far as he had ever been able to see. Maybe he was missing something, maybe there was more to it, but for now it only made this seem terribly sad.

“I’m not here to hurt you,” he made sure to remind her, lifting his hands to show that they were empty and that he had no intention of turning this into a legitimate fight. “How is getting stronger so you can hurt me anything worth fighting for? How is that going to solve anything or save anyone?”

He liked to think she was just spouting off nonsense, that somewhere inside she didn’t really mean anything she was saying, but he didn’t know her, couldn’t pretend to understand her, and so it was probably more wishful thinking than anything.

“Your general, whoever that is, what else did they tell you?” he hazarded to ask.
