A young brown cub bounded his way toward the top of a small mound. He felt lively and full of energy today. Which was how it should be until he collapsed in a heap to nap. Vorpolkel'Reym lifted his head to survey his tiny domain. He imagined the beetles and lesser bugs his subjects for the day. There was so many things he could have them do.
Not that the insects really cared what an over rambunctious cub wanted them to do. They continued trying to do what they wanted until he grew bored and lost interest, leaving them alone again. Vorpol paused to itch his ear. One insect had sprayed dirt all over it. Tickling until he could get the slightly damp stuff off. A breeze came dancing through and teased at the blonde tuff of hair on his head. He laughed springing to his feet. The wind wished to race!
He ran. He ran where the wind went. Turning as it turned; if it blew against his right side he would turn left until he was facing the same way it wanted to go. All the while running with boundless energy.

Wherever her babies were, whatever they were doing, Bashasha was never far away - or Jibwa, for that matter They were still too young to be allowed to wander far, and the little wild dog kept her large ears keenly alert even when her babies weren't within ready sight. It was easy for them to slip out of sight, as the grasses were still taller than they were, and would be for some time.
The day's first stray was Vorpol, but his laugh gave him away soon enough, and after that, it was easy to follow the rustling he made as he ran. Shasha used her longer legs to overtake him and pounced out at him with a bark, pressing her forelegs to the ground and wagging her tail in the air behind her. "Gotchya!"

He had no idea that he'd been missed. Nor did he realize that his mother was coming to find him. Vorpol had just a moment between the familiar bark and himself being pounced. He laughed delighted as he rolled over and wrapped his paws around her muzzle in a hug. A leg worked just as well for his short legs too when he hadn't just been pounced.
"Mama mama!" The young male giggled with joy and pressed his nose against hers as it stuck out from between his paws. "We won mama! The wind wanted to race and we beated it." He beamed up at the wild dog that he called mother. It was then that he noticed the motion behind her.
"What was that?" Always curious, he sprange to his feet and tried to run around Bashasha to see. It was a strange movement which made it all the more delightful for him.

Shasha emited a giggle of her own in response to her son's, rubbing her nose against his and continuing to wag her tail. Little delighted her quite so much as being called 'mama,' whether the speaker was born of her or not. "Did we? We ran very very fast, then! But it's gone away now. It must be sad that it lost."
Characteristically, the youngster soon found something else to focus on. "Hmm? What's what?" Unaware yet that it was her tail he'd 'found,' she turned to face the opposite direction and look. "I don't see anything."

He gave a nod. The wind always went away even if it did win.
Vorpol could barely contain himself until his mom could see it. Then suddenly it was gone. Wait! Where'd it go?! The cub thought in bafflement. It was right there. Looking all around him though, he couldn't find it. He peered around Shasha and spotted it again.
"I found it! I found it!" He bounced back around eagerly. "See? Here here mama!" It moved in the oddest way. The little cub wanted to swipe his paw at it. Very slowly he raised up his paw, his tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth in concentration.

This time, rather than turn all the way around to look, Shasha simply turned her head, and finally realized that it was her tail Vorpol had discovered. The wild dog giggled and wagged it again. "That? That's my tail! It's attached, see? Like yours! It just doesn't have that funny thing on the end."

The cub pulled his paw back just as he was about to swipe as his mother turned to look. Oh. It was her tail. She might not appreciate it he tried to swat at it. Vorpol followed the wagging tail up to where it attached. "Oooooooooooo." It was indeed attached! Like his? Determined now to find out if he was attached like hers, he stood up and tried to move around to see his rump. Around and around he went, until he was dizzy.
The cub swayed a moment with his eyes crossed. That wasn't going to work. Then he twisted around in place like Shasha had. And Lo! There it was. His tail. For an experiment he gave it a way and watched it move. Yup that was his. He looked from his tail to her and back again. "Why's mine got that funny thing on the end?"

"Because it's yours," Shasha answered with a giggle. "It's a lion tail, just like your father's! I don't know why lions have tails like that, but they do. I think it's a very good tail!"

His tongue curled out from between his lips as he was involved with some serious thinking here! Now that he thought about it, yes yes it was like fathers. Vorpol watched as it twitched. It didn't move like his mother's did he noticed. Now he looked at her tail and watched the way it moved that facinated him so. He wanted his tail to move like that!
"It is like father's tail, but I will make it move like mothers!" He puffed his chest out with his bold declaration. Then he turned back to his tail and ordered, "move like mother's does!" It continued to twitch. The cub huffed. "I said move like mothers! If you don't you'll be sorry!" He gave it a bit more time then proceeded to chase his tail around and around until he was once more dizzy.
"I don't think that worked." Vorpel wobbled then sat down as he considered his options. He very much wanted his tail to act like his mother's did.
