It was getting close to that time of year that Marybeth loved. The time of year that she waited for and hoped for, the time of year that she always wished would come sooner during the hot months of summer.

It was getting very close to hat weather.

Today was the perfect day to test the waters, so to speak, and Marybeth left the house wearing her favorite knit rainbow kitty hat, grinning and feeling ready to face the world and all of its challenges. Senior year was proving to be a real drag, so if she got to spend a Saturday afternoon doing whatever, then darn it, that was what she was going to do. Whatever.

There was a mall with her name on it, and she wasn’t going to waste a minute of the day. She got to the mall and sighed, drawing in a deep breath and just drinking in the sights, sounds and smells of the stores and food court. Yes, this was the break she needed. The escape from her dorm room and a day that would just be about her.

She glanced down at her hand though, flexing it and giving a little sigh. It would be better if someone was beside her to hold it, but that didn’t matter much in the scheme of things. Not one bit.

Now it was time to let the shopping begin!
