Nearly a week had passed. A week since she'd been hopeful and almost confident. There had been some close calls since she'd become blind, and interesting encounters. Shukriyya had held a glimmer of hope that maybe she would be able to survive on her own. Now she knew better. There was nothing left for her. Several days ago she'd found herself stepping into a small waterhole. It should have been easy to survive here. Instead she had been afraid to leave it.
The nearly skin-and-bones lioness lay with her head pointing toward the water. She had laid down several days ago and never bother to get back up. Shukriyya was waiting to die. Several times she had felt the sun rise and set on her body. Felt the heat of the day and the cool of the night. Sudden noises of the animals living here failed to startle her anymore. They just were. A slow breath left her body, eventually followed by a slow intake. Her eyes were closed waiting for the god of death to claim her.
