The past few days had been better. Candace was definitely moping less now, and she was thinking about her atrocious behavior less as well. She could only hope that she didn't become some kind of gossip topic amongst the techs because of that little stunt she'd pulled. But despite feeling better she was still...actually kind of bored. So bored she had resorted to just laying on her couch staring into space, her head turned toward her shelf of trinkets.

...What was that paper? It wasn't like her to just leave paper lying around.

Pushing off the couch and standing, Candace made her way across the room and picked up the mystery note, reading it quickly.

See me sometime to earn your own set. Nevertheless, congratulations. - Aria

Oh! Oh s**t that was right! Aria! Candace went from bored and disinterested to excited and eager. Aria! She hadn't seen her since her promotion! Was her leader busy? Ohhh, she hoped she had time for a silly little Mist who messed up more often than she cared to admit. She usually seemed to do well around Aria, at least. Humming cheerfully, she grabbed her phone and sent her leader a text.

Text to Aria
Hey! It's Candace! Are you available right now? I seem to have been reminded of a note promising me my own set of lockpicks.

Candace stared at the text. It seemed..lacking. Why else did she want to see Aria? Well, Aria didn't make her feel like crap. Aria seemed to care. Aria was amazing. She missed spending time with Aria..

Wow.

That was definitely not going in the text. That just sounded embarrassing. Sighing, she finally hit "send" and flopped down onto the couch again to wait.

There was no immediate response. At least, not until three minutes later where a short reply was received.

Candace wasn't surprised that the response wasn't immediate. Aria was a division leader, she had s**t to do. She was busy. She--she texted back! Squealing with delight and bouncing in her seat, Candace checked what she'd said. Her office! Perfect! She wasted no time grabbing her coat and tossing it on, hurrying out the door and straight to Aria's office.

Okay she might have stopped go to back for her shoes. And really 'might' here means 'she totally did'.

Eventually she arrived at Aria's door, knocking twice before opening the door enough to peek inside with a bright smile. "Ma'am~?"

If by "s**t to do" included "sleeping on the desk" then Candace would be right on the money. Aria had a vivid red mark on her cheek from where it had lain, and no amount of rubbing would make it go away. "Mm? Hey hunter, come on in." Aria greeted vaguely as she scrapped the papers on her desk together, shuffling them into a reasonable stack. "You're here for your lockpicks, right?"

Aria turned to her desk and pulled open a drawer, frowned, then tried another one. She reached in with both hands and pulled out what looked to be a mini safe, dropping it on the desk to face Candace. "Here you go. Don't leave the room with it."

"..Uhhh...are you okay?" Candace gestured to her own cheek, an eyebrow arched after catching sight of Aria's red cheek. Did someone hit her? No, she seemed groggy. Oh, crap. She'd interrupted a nap, hadn't she? Way to go. Though the worry was quickly overtaken by excitement when Aria referred to her as hunter instead of trainee. She'd been a Hunter for months now but she had yet to hear Aria refer to her as one. For some reason it felt even better to hear it from her than anyone else. Though she did prefer her name over just being called her rank. Oh well. "They're a convenient excuse to bother my leader for some quality time, yes." She answered with a shrug as she stepped into the office and closed the door behind her, approaching the desk while Aria looked through drawers.

She blinked. A safe? Candace would humor her. She tried just opening it once. Nope. No dice. She figured that would happen. Sighing, Candace leaned over with her elbows on the desk and her chin propped up in the palm of her hand. The other hand pointed at the safe. "Now, I can see you're tired." She kept her tone playful, grinning and trying not to roll her eyes. A test? Really? "But I think I need to remind you that lockpicks aren't exactly useful when they're inside a locked safe." Candace was chuckling, pulling up a chair and picking up the mini safe again. A combination lock, huh? That shouldn't be too hard to crack. Follow the rules of the combination lock while listening for the clicks, right? She'd never actually broken into anything that needed a combination. She was a pretty honest person before becoming a Hunter in regards to how she acquired things.

Though really what was stopping her from just summoning Atropos and smashing the safe under her boot. Nothing. But Candace refrained, sitting and dutifully checking out the mini safe. Okay. Get into it. Not too hard, right? She tried to fight back a smile. Should've known it wouldn't be this easy.

Aria shook her head. "No. I'm... fine. Well enough, considering most recent and current events." The division leader remarked as she scowled at the papers. She spread out the stack, pulling each paper in one at a time to reorder them. "I became bored while waiting for you to come pick them up. Rather than get too carried away, I decided to stash them in there."

Papers organized, Aria picked up a paperclip to keep them in order as she set them aside. She matched Candace's look with a wide-eyed innocent flutter of her eyelashes. "Well, I was just going to hand them to you. Then there was an invasion followed by building..." She trailed off, waving her hand at the safe. "It's been awhile though. I don't quite remember what the combination was. You can use just about anything in this room at your disposal to open that, by the way. Just... nothing that I'm currently using."

"I got distracted after my promotion. I'd have come right away if I'd known you were going to put them in a safe while waiting for me, though." She held it up and gave it a careful shake. Yup, they were in there. This was going to be..delightful. Aria's admission, whether it was a lie or the truth, won her a wide-eyed stare of dismay from her young Mist Hunter. "You..forgot the...fantastic." This was going to be just great. It wasn't written down anywhere? Sigh.

"I've never tried breaking into a safe before, or opening a combination lock I didn't know the combination for...I could easily just..smash it." She glanced Aria's way before turning her gaze down to the safe on her lap. Anything she wanted. What was in the room, exactly?

Candace set the safe down on the desk again in a clear space out of Aria's way and stood to look around the room. She'd never actually been in Aria's office before. Did she have runics lying around? A crowbar? Though maybe she could use Atropos' blade like one..the knee blade.

Swear to Jack if you even try it I will kill you. Candace snorted at Atropos' threat.

I'd like to see you try.

"How have you been, by the way? It's been awhile." The last time she remembered seeing Aria had been her promotion mission. Candace frowned at that thought. She'd ask about that later.
PostPosted: Thu Sep 13, 2012 12:16 am

The dismay brought a sadistic grin to Aria's face. Either she really did forget what the combination was, or she was lying. Given the track record of the division leaders (and really any hunter in a superior position of power), the latter was very likely. Or, considering the stress of recent events, the former was also possible. Either way, Aria wasn't going to give up the answers that easily.

"First time for everything," Aria shrugged. "It's unlikely that you'll ever come across a combination lock, but just in case... you might as well know what to do with'em." Aria met the suggestion of smashing it with a flat look, one eyebrow arched for an unspoken Are you serious?

Unfortunately for Candace, Aria didn't have any spare runics lying around or a crowbar. The heaviest-looking thing in the office (aside from the desk) was a potted plant. It was a rather large pot, one made out of ceramic and containing several bags worth of dirt along with a massive potted plant. There were even a couple decorative glass globes that slowly trickled water into it. The plant itself was rather large, leafy, and green. And rather unremarkable.

There were a couple decorative spears attached to the wall. There was even a coupe bookshelves filled with books. All in all it was a rather boring office that screamed "business" compared to Caelius or Dr. H's.

When Candace asked her question, it took a moment for Aria to answer. "Well enough, considering. What were you distracted with, out of curiosity? Did another division leader steal you away for their own personal use?"

Damn..nothing useful. Maybe a spear but unless it was strong she really didn't want to go around breaking things in Aria's office. That was just rude. Maybe she really would have to figure it out the hard way instead of prying it open. No big deal. She could do that. Yup. So without picking up any kind of tools she sat down in the chair again and pulled up to the safe sitting on the desk again. "How does it work, exactly? I just listen for a click when guessing what numbers the combination could be?" She only knew the television and movie stuff. Candace didn't go out of her way to find out if that kind of thing was a myth or actual fact. That kind of lockpicking always involved things to listen with...like a stethoscope. They seemed to be lacking one of those.

"Ahhhh..sooooort of. At first it was a personal pet project, but I was asked to test an experimental golem. Took longer than anyone expected, I think." A shrug, Candace idly spun the lock. "I messed up though...it was a golem designed off a pre-existing student at Amityville, the one I'd taken here, and I guess at some point I did something I didn't realize set off all of her little boyfriend's suspicions and he called me out on it." She didn't mention how she'd broken down under stress. And she would not mention it. "So, project over. I have a lot of free time right now." She shrugged again and leaned in to press her ear against the safe. Was it really that easy? Just turn the lock until you heard a click?

"Ah...Aria..I was wondering," Candace sat up again, lips pouting as she prodded idly at the safe. She wasn't giving up just..damn. This was going to be difficult. "About that town. The one in Quebec? Has there been any kind of progress with it? Any changes?" News...body counts..?
PostPosted: Thu Sep 13, 2012 10:36 pm

Not only was breaking things in Aria's office rude, but it also ran the risk of retribution. It was highly possible that Aria knew where Candace kept her shoes, and it was also possible that Aria knew of a dog or two that wouldn't mind a new toy... But that was just mean. Never the less, Aria winced. "Lance didn't teach your combinations? Ah well, they are going out of style... There's several ways go go about breaking into them." She shrugged. "You can try listening real close for the clicks. If you have a glass cup you can place the, ah, rim of it against it then your ear against the other. The glass would amplify noise. You can also try feeling for the clicks, but that takes a lot of practice." She shrugged. "Sometimes the most obvious way... isn't the best way in."

Aria leaned back in her chair, listening. "Ah, that golem worked? That's good, though it's a shame about getting found out." The division leader looked as if she wanted to add something more, stopping as Candace asked her question. "The town has been taken care of before we were invaded, thankfully. There's a couple hunters stationed there to ensure that it continues to run smoothly. A regular human... doesn't cope with Insanity very well, and with levels that high..." The division leader sighed. "If you're looking for a happy ending, it won't be found there. It'll take awhile for that town to recover, I think."

Candace blushed. "Ah, we went over regular locks and deadbolts. I didn't even think to ask about combinations, and when we were practicing we might not have had the time for me to get the hang of it at the time anyway." She admitted with some embarrassment. She was still idly spinning the lock when Aria gave her tips, her head cocked to one side. The most obvious way, huh? Well the obvious ways were..breaking it, prying it open or listening for the lock to click. Candace definitely wasn't ready to just feel for them. Maybe she'd start with trying to listen for the click. Did Aria have a cup she wasn't using? Her gaze finally left the safe to check Aria's desk for one. "Don't these things usually have a back up plan just in case someone forgets the combination?" She'd seen locks with a place for a key before!

"Yeah, it worked. I had them fooled for weeks. Not sure what I said or did...too late now." Candace frowned again. She didn't like talking about it.

Taken care of? Was that good? Candace perked up a bit at the news until Aria told her there was no happy ending. She frowned. "Were the missing hunters ever found..?" Did she want to know? No...she didn't. Not unless she saw them in the halls looking fresh and fine. But she had to know. Candace needed to know.

"You... might not have had enough time?" Aria asked slowly. "You only saw him once? I thought..." She trailed off, sighing. "Normally I'd point out that you can ask him for more lessons later, but he's currently in no shape to do so at the moment. If you have any further questions..." Aria waved her hand. "You know the drill. Just because you're now a hunter doesn't mean you can't get lessons from another. But I digress. I do have another way to open that, but... that would be telling."

Aria's desk, sadly, did not have a cup. There was, however, a plastic water bottle. It looked to be half full. "Otherwise... Yes, we did manage to find them. It took awhile, but we managed to find them and their weapons. Recovery is another thing we do as a Mist along with Death and members from other divisions."

The division leader looked at the safe. "I can open that for you, if you'd like," she offered. "It's not fair to short you like that." Oh wait, it totally was. Horray for Division Leader Superiority.

Oh. Uh! s**t. Backpeddlebackpeddle! Candace smiled innocently and shrugged. "We had a schedule of sorts. I would've seen him more but I got distracted. It slipped my mind. I did practice what he taught me whenever I had the chance though!" Wait. No shape? What? "Did..something happen to Lance?" Most of her interactions the past few weeks had been at night and she was usually half asleep. Any news of Lance's condition went way over her head, apparently. Questions? She did have questions. She always had questions. Candace gave an understanding nod when told to keep asking for those lessons, raising a brow when Aria mentioned another way to open the safe. "Do you have time to teach me other kinds of locks right now? Like combinations?" She gestured to the safe, her smile returning. "Opening this thing could be lesson one."

That cheerful smile faltered noticeably at the news of the two hunters that had been taken and disappeared when under her care. They found them..and their weapons.

Why..why did Aria feel the need to word it that way?

"By weapons...do you mean weapons or tablets?" Candace asked slowly, her expression cautious. No...it was true. They were dead. They were dead and it was her fault..

"Only if you want to." Candace's eyes flickered from Aria to the safe and back again. She shrugged. "If you teach me how to open it we can consider it as me earning my own lockpicks...by..picking them out of a locked safe." Surely she had to see the humor here. Candace suddenly needed a little humor again. Back to safe topics. Literally. She forced her smile now, poking at the safe. "I'll keep in mind to never let you get bored because of me again if this is what the result is going to be like, though."
PostPosted: Sat Sep 15, 2012 12:54 am

"And how much did he teach you?" Aria pressed. "One or two lessons isn't enough. There's different locks, different situations, different tools -- there's many different factors. And it's not just about unlocking the lock. There's getting to and away from it. Take Lance for example." Aria sat back in her own chair, gesturing down at herself. "Lance wears his coat across his legs, yes? He can hide something under it and nobody would be none the wiser. If you or I tried to do that, we'd be found out. Myself especially." She couldn't help but to grin. "Still, regardless it just means I need to get more creative."

Her expression faltered as she grew quiet. "That... must have been some project you were on to have not seen it. Where to begin?" She rose, gesturing for the safe. She set it down in front of her and stared at it. "After we were invaded, one of them didn't go home. It... It wasn't like the other creatures. It was made out of Insanity, and it seemed to lurk near the houses. Lance went out on a runic horse and tangled with it. He was found unconscious in a crater." As she spoke, Aria had flipped the safe upside-down. She absently twisted one of the rubberized feet, pulling and lifting a hidden hatch on the bottom. "He was unconscious for weeks. The dragon's long gone, but there's no surveillance in the area. We're not sure what happened. He's still recovering in the Life labs. He... seems okay, but this with the mark? It's --"

Aria broke off, running a hand through her hair. "It's... It's been rather eventful, needless to say. Sorry, I didn't mean to unload like that onto you. Some division leader I am, huh?" She reached into the safe and pulled out a small wooden box, tossing it to Candace. "I put them in there."

...Except that the lid on it wouldn't budge. If shaken, something could be heard rattling around on the inside. The box itself was engraved and dark green in color. There was no indication of how to open the box: no key, no visible seams, nothing. Thanks, Aria.

Candace blushed. "Most of the night. I got the hang of it pretty easy? I'm admittedly still a little sloppy but I think I'm still improving." She needed this but oh god it was so embarrassing. It hadn't even crossed Candace's mind to learn other types of locks. The first lesson had been a surprise to begin with! She was good at the locks in the Princess Tower, she'd always been good at those, and she had always been able to let herself into her house or her car if she'd locked herself out of them...it just..never occurred to her. Idiot. The majority of her experience in deception and sneaking in and out of places was around Deus itself and in Halloween with golems. Damnit. She did need more lessons and practice. She was more than willing to do it though. She nodded, looking attentive and very interested. She liked creative, it was something Candace could do. Improvise.

"Ah..well...I had to basically live that girl's life without raising suspicion, so while she took frequent 'naps' I still usually only came around at night while everyone was already asleep and things were quiet. It was nice that the golem could go into a sleep mode so I could take breaks. There doesn't seem to be any bringing it back though if it's destroyed or you deactivate it, so it's a one-time deal using that particular student unless you make a whole new golem, I guess." Candace shrugged. "I saw the dragon when he first arrived, during the raid on the island by the Horsemen and the students, but I didn't know what had happened to him between then and when we destroyed him recently.." Unconscious for weeks. That was not good. Movement caught her eye and Candace looked down to watch Aria open the safe with a hidden door. Of course. Right. Why didn't she think of that. The leg came off.

Aria's apology didn't surprise her. She'd done it before! A few times, actually. Candace smiled warmly and shook her head. "Aria, I told you. It's fine. I really don't mind. You're a fine leader who cares about her division and the people in it. Perfectly capable and knowledgeable, and a good teacher. You have my highest respect!"

And then she saw the box.
