Ten years of age was the standard for children to leave home, obtain their first poke'mon, and begin down the road towards their future. During the daytime, this seemed like a fantastic idea. There were endless fields of green, thick woods, and mountain ranges that spanned half of the continent. The fresh air, sunlight, and new sights and sounds were any kid's dream come true. However, as the night began to fall and the intriguing landscape fell behind a veil of black, forests became dark masses looming int he distance, and the mountains rose up like terrible, jagged teeth against the night sky, one had to question the sanity of the adults who had collectively decided that this was a good idea.

Baird questioned it from the time he set foot outside of town. He'd never been outside of the town by himself. He didn't know how to read a compass or a map. These were skills a trainer should have known but he'd never planned on becoming one. His mother didn't have the wit to teach him, she could barely speak sense some days. She clung to her old habits, her anchor to her old life and her sanity. In her routine she could pretend that her husband was just out to inspect a shipment, that her eldest was out getting his knees scraped up while he hunted for a new poke'mon to add to his core party, that her youngest was at home curled up around his books. He couldn't blame her, but more than that he couldn't let her continue on. The shop wasn't breaking even and it was slowly tapping into what little they had saved up.

So here he was. The man of the house at thirteen years old. Man being a fairly loose term... he felt like an infant finding his feet for the first time. He'd give anything to turn tail and bury his face in his mother's shoulder.

A quiet hum broke him from his thoughts and tugged his eyes off the beaten road at his feet. A warm, lively glow broke the growing darkness and surrounded himself and his companion in a ring of light. Rylis, his black flaaffy, stared at him with a pair of dark, concerned eyes. Baird forced a smile to his lips that never quite touched even the corners of his eyes. It was a half-hearted effort but one regardless.

"There's no towns close by. I don't think... but maybe there's... a cave or..." He glanced uncertainly outside of the circle of light. Unfortunately, the world beyond was growing darker as the sun faded fully from the horizonline.

Rylis glanced to one side, searching the darkness. There were rocks, small shrubs, and the occasional nook but it wouldn't be safe to crawl into any of them. It was likely something had already made a home out of it. Shaking his head, Rylis pointed forward. It was best they moved on. They could sleep during the daytime.

A tall, blond haired man continued his slow ride on his bike. Night had fallen and most of the pokemon had retired for the night; he could hear the faint calls of the nocturnal birds off in the distance. He had been hoping to make it to the Howling Forrest before nightfall but he had gotten distracted by a small herd of pokemon that he had stopped to photograph.

Rory considering stopping for the night; finding a tree with a sturdy branch that would make for a decent support to rest on for the night. He also considered using his pokegear and calling his family back home. He wondered what his baby brother and sister were up to these days. Though granted, neither of them could be considered babies anymore.

He got off of his bike and returned it to its item ball before placing the ball into his backpack. He continued his trek on foot and eventually spotted a small but of light up ahead. What would create light like that this far out, he wondered. As he got closer, he spotted the wool of a Flaaffy up ahead.

He approach cautiously so not to scare the electric type or the trainer he could barely see in the outline of the light.

"I don't think there's any caves nearby but you might be able to find a decent bit of shade."

Rylis was the first to acknowledge the other trainer. Humming a warning, the electric-type poke'mon turned his head and raised his tail to increase the range of the light around he and his trainer. Ahead of him Baird nearly jumped out of his skin. Drawing his arms in close and crowding against his poke'mon, the young trainer strained his eyes against the darkness to make out the features of the approaching trainer.

"S....sh..shade?" He mumbled, uncertain eyes glancing past the man before sheepishly rising up once more to meet his eyes. "I... I'm going t-towards... I gotta find a gym."

Rylis drew in a deep breath and stood upright. To his owner's statement he gave a short single nod.

"You've still got a ways to go before you get to a gym," Rory replied, adjusting the straps of his backpack. The poor boy looked nervous and slightly scared. "Which gym are you headed to?"

He cautiously moved closer so the pokemon and the boy could see him easier. He didn't mean to scare either one of them anymore than he already had; it wasn't the best idea, coming up to someone in the dark.

Baird dipped a hand into his pocket and cold fingers fumbled between a few loose coins and a pack of gum to eventually produce a small, compact map that he’d packed with him. Along the backside he’d scratched in a few notes to himself. He didn’t have access to the upgraded, digital maps that most other trainers carried but he almost preferred something solid, something he could write memos on and make notes on land marks.

“Th-the gym leader in Motterossa v-vanished… the only other one I know about is in K-Katarina.” He slowly held the map out for the older trainer to inspect. Rylis, almost on que, took a step back and held his tail out over the parchment to illuminate its surface.

“Is there…an inn or a poke’mon center nearby for lodging?”

Valarie was looking for a place to set-up her tent. Somewhere that is full of foliage so no one would barge into her tent to steal her food. As she walking, she spotted a light. She slowly and silently moved closer then crawled into a shrub. Now that she was closer, it was a Flaaffy. She slowly pulled out her sketch pad and tried to doodle the Pokemon as best as she can in the dark.

Though that was too difficult, so she pulled out her camera, turned off the flash, and took a picture of the Pokemon. Unfortunately, the camera made a clicking sound. Valarie hoped no one heard it.

Rory watched as the young boy pulled a small map out of his pocket with a lot of scribbled notes on the back. He wondered to himself how long the boy had been traveling and if the Flaffy was his only pokemon he had with him.

He nodded in agreement when the kid mentioned the disappearance of the nearest gym leader. "Yeah, I heard. The one in Katarina's south from here and would be quite a way to go tonight." When the young male asked about a pokemon center, the blond man shook his head sadly, "Sorry, kid. I don't think there's on for miles. At least I haven't seen one."

When he heard a click, he looked around to see where it came from. "Was that you?"

Baird carefully folded the map along its creases and returned it to his pocket. He needed to reorganize himself a bit more but he could do that when he had a moment to sit down. He didn't want to try sleeping in the dark, out in the middle of no where.

"That's what I thought." He admitted quietly. It didn't look too far on the map but he'd not even passed the quarter-way mark. While the fact of the matter was a deflating one, it also birthed a new respect for the distance and the size of his home continent.

The click alerted Rylis before it alerted Baird. It was only when the stranger said something that he lifted his head and looked fearfully to the darkness beyond Rylis' light circle. "N-no... what was that?"

Rylis bleated a warning and sent an arch of electricity up between his ears, shedding a blue, snapping light around him further. He couldn't see too well beyond the light he was giving, the darkness and the light contrast did a number on his vision. If it was hostile, he'd have to deal with it before it got any closer.

"Wh-who's there?"

Valarie tried to hold back her laughter when the two trainers were wondering where the click came from. She watched how the Flaaffy reacted to the sound though, so she jotted a few notes down. She took a look at her photo, it was decent.

Now she has some time to fool around. She grabbed a branch of the shrub she was hiding in, and snapped it in half.

When the sound of a branch snapping was heard not too long after the click, Rory looked in the direction the noise had come from. He wondered what was lurking in the dark shrubs and questioned momentarily as to if it was a pokemon causing the noises. He didn't remember any pokemon, however, that made clicking noises.

He stepped out in front of the kid; even though the boy had a pokemon with him, Rory felt the urge to protect him just in case it wasn't a pokemon hiding in the bushes.

"Shhhhhhh," he whispered to the boy and stealthily crept towards the shrub the noises had come from.

Baird jumped as something snapped. Something heavy enough to snap a twig... it might have been a poke'mon. Certainly not a ghost-type though. Typically they hovered well above the ground. It didn't mean that they were out of the woods either. It was heavy enough, and assumable large enough, to snap a tig and bold enough to approach a well-traveled trail.

He bit his lip and gave the strange older man a short nod of his head. Rylis hummed and took a step closer to his trainer.

It was too dark to tell...and a flash could blind the man. Instead he readied a small ball of electricity in-between his paws. There was no telling if the source of the sounds was friend or foe.

Valarie let's out a small giggle, but she quickly slaps her hand over her mouth. After that, she snaps another branch to try to scare the two trainers.

When the blond man picked up the slight sound of a giggle, he glared at the shrub where the noise was emanating from. Whoever was back there was not a pokemon; not a single one that he had ever run into during his travels had the capability of giggling.

Abandoning the young boy to the safety of his Flaffy, Rory slowly crept over to the shrub. When he heard another brand snap, he knelt down and grabbed the shrub, revealing a girl hiding behind with a grin on her face.

"What are you doing?"

Valarie looked at the man with her arms crossed. She thought about what to say; she hated lying, but she didn't want to say that she was trying to scare them. "I'm watching that Flaaffy." She pointed at the pink and black colored Pokemon. It wasn't a lie, so she doesn't need to feel bad.

She wasn't happy that the trainer ruined her fun though.

Baird could have melted right then and there from pure relief. Thank heavens it wasn't something...dangerous. A nidorino crouched and ready to pounce, a hungry arbok, or.... worse. Still, it was strange that another trainer was essentially stalking after them.

He listened to her explanation, peeking around Rylis to get a better look at the offender. The flaaffy raised his tail, shedding the light further outwards. The excuse had both Baird and Rylis taken back. Rylis glanced sidelong to his trainer and Baird only shrugged.

"Th-that's not a good idea you know." Baird piped up, his voice small. "Rylis might have zapped you if he thought you were dangerous.

The poke'mon gave a firm nod of his head to confirm his trainer's statement.

"You...could have just asked you know."
