Underwater Observation Post

Not for the claustrophobic, this is a station submerged underneath the island that floats along with it. Shaped like a giant metal pill, one side is metal, and houses the portal, readout equipment, a console full of observation monitors, and a few pieces of comfort such as a table, chairs, and books. The other half is made of thick, clear plastic, allowing a full and unobstructed view of the local underwater life.

In the distance, it's not unusual to notice massive shapes moving in the distance, and it's the purpose of this station to keep an eye for any of these, or anything else unusual, coming too close to the island. The Island of Deus Ex Machina floats quietly along the edges between this world and that of Halloween, and with that comes certain, calculated, risks.

Melvin had only been here a few weeks, but that was enough time for him to settle and soon be signed up for duty work. Considering that the facilities were fixed, there was not other business to attend to.

Given a brief description of where and what he was doing, he followed his summons direction, asked a few techs which portal he was taking, and was soon standing in front of another Hi-Tech Stargate.

It was the first time he wasn't following anyone else into a portal, and he looked around, hoping he did this right. Taking a breath, he stepped in and was transported to a very small room with a very blue view.

Melvin wasn't alone for long. Soon enough, the portal rippled again as Jordan stepped through. He looked briefly surprised to see someone he didn't know, then offered a polite smile to Melvin. "Hi," he said. "Anything visible today?"

Melvin was surprised by someone appearing so soon, but not surprised it was someone he didn't know. It was pretty much a given that he knew barely anyone, and those he did know were just barely.

At the question, he looked to the big window out to the ocean. "Um.." It was pretty clear he wasn't sure. "I just got here." He slowly moved to the glass, looking out to the ocean. It reminded him when he went to the aquarium, but with the disturbing knowledge that water and pressure could crush him at any moment.

Frowning, he glared out, staring with deep concentration. "This is a bit disturbing."

Just got here in more than one sense, apparently; aside being a new face, the guy was wearing a trainee coat. Brand new. Jordan glanced to the monitors and readouts on the equipment. "I don't see any traces in the past half-hour," he observed, "so we're probably in for a couple of boring hours. I'm Jordan, by the way. Sun division." Melvin was saved from the offer of a friendly handshake only by having moved out of range in time.

"Maybe a little," he agreed with Melvin's comment, and decided not to make any comments about how deep underwater the observation post was, how much water pressure must be on the walls, or what exactly might be drifting out there in the dim water.

You're all heart, Ferros said.

"Oh." Melvin turned, looking at the monitors that he wasn't familiar with, before stepping closer to Jordan, offering his soft-gloved hand to the other man. "Melvin Wood. Life." It seemed to be how introductions went to state name and division, and he was getting in the habit of it.

Once Jordan shook his hand, he looked back at the glass. "A little? It's just wrong." He looked at the glass. "Just look. It's like a bunch of kindergardners were let loose in here. All these hand prints." Melvin was not looking through the glass, but AT the glass.

So...many.....handprints.

"How can anyone look through this?" It was ruining the view of death outside. He had to wonder how finger-smuged the monitors were.

Jordan shook Melvin's hand, nodding. "This is Ferros," he added, and held up his right hand so that Melvin could see the heavy ring on his index finger. It had been some time since he'd introduced himself by surname, he realized; division had taken the place of family months ago.

As Melvin clarified that his uneasiness was directed at the handprints covering the glass, Jordan's eyebrows arched. Well then. "I'm sure there's some windex in here," he said, and moved over to the cabinets under the consoles, rummaging around until he located a small and dingy box of cleaning supplies. "Hah. There. It wouldn't be logical to lug cleaning stuff down here only every once in a while. Not when they've got people stuck down here daily with nothing to do. Here, heads up." He straightened up and lobbed the spray bottle in Melvin's direction.

Oh right. Everyone introducing their weapons. Whoopee.

Melvin reached behind his ear, looking like the small child taxed with introducing their obnoxious, senile grandmother to their best friend. Taking the red pen from behind his ear, he held it out. "Saliva." He said, in a bland, mono-tone ta-da voice. He tucked her back in place.

Would it kill you to add a little more flair to my introduction?

I'm sorry I didn't like sparklers and throw confetti. I'll remember that next time.

Good. Keep those on hand.

It seemed Saliva missed the joke.

Just as he tossed the Windex, Melvin jerked forward, then fumbled a moment to get a firm grip, before it settled in his arms. His eyes slowly looked up to Jordan, an accusing gaze that said he threw that on purpose and with the sole intent of making him fluster. Melvin would remember that, Jordan.

Walking over, he reached in the box, inspecting the grungy objects before pulling out some paper towels and walking back tot he massive window that made up half of the capsule room they were in. "I've been meeting a lot of Suns lately. They seem like a big division. Is Ferros a ridiculously large weapon too?" He asked, already spraying a corner of the glass and creating his starting point. If he could manage, he'd like to get this entire placed cleaned in a few sessions. The glass this time at least. Maybe make a sign for idiot hunters not to rub themselves all over it. It was for observing. That didn't require your hands.

Jordan blinked at the dirty look thrown back in his direction. Had he deserved that one? Possibly, but it seemed a bit over the top. He mentally shrugged it off. Didn't matter.

"Sun's been getting a lot of new faces," he agreed. A flicker of sadness crossed his face briefly at the thought that they needed it, since Sun and Moon had taken some of the heaviest casualties on the Apocalypse mission. At the question, though, he laughed. "He is, actually," he answered. "Oversized hammer. He complains about not being big enough anyway. What's Saliva like?"

Melvin was occupying himself with the cleanup. Jordan moved over to the monitors to check the day's logs so he wouldn't be standing around watching Melvin work without doing anything himself.

"Saliva is a gun...or sorts. Not terribly big, but I guess that is a Sun thing unless everyone has massive weapons." He hoped not. While he hadn't been looking at weapon size his last mission, he would take a personal offensive if he had the smallest one around. "I guess with a gun, there is no point in having it bigger - not like a hammer or axe." Or whatever the hell Robert had. Twin blade...thing? He really needed to brush up on the names of weapons since it seemed the main curriculum around here.

Well SORRRYYYY that I'm not massive. You probably couldn't even lift me with those little arms of yours if I was.

"Are they heavy, the weapons? I've seen plenty that look the size of their hunter. Was wondering if it's lighter for those who carry it." He was curious after all that if there was some anti-gravity boost given to holding the weapons with some ease. There was some guys who looked rather beefed up, but Jordan didn't look like be benched 300 pounds each day.
PostPosted: Mon Sep 03, 2012 1:52 pm

"It's not so much a Sun thing as an individual thing," Jordan said. "Some weapons are just like that. The biggest one I've seen is the Life Division assistant's partner, actually." He shrugged. "It does seem like a lot of weapons grow larger with core changes as they grow stronger, so Saliva might not always be small."

He nodded to the question; Melvin seemed smart, if maybe a little eccentric, but eccentric was more the rule than the exception when it came to Hunters. "Ferros has considerable physical weight," he explained, "but he only feels about as heavy as a normal sledgehammer to me. Any lighter and it'd be difficult for us to use his momentum. I suspect anyone else trying to pick him up would have a lot of trouble. Aside pissing off their own weapon," he added dryly. "Which is generally a bad idea to start with."

"My weapon is always pissed." He informed Jordan, smiling at the glass as he moved to another spot. "So weapons get upset when you touch other weapons? Like a possessive girlfriend?" He had to chuckle at that one. "Didn't know I was marrying the damn thing." Saliva on the other hand was not laughing, and seemed to be fuming at him.

Don't want me touching other girls?

It is almost like you want someone else. I picked you. Remember? You can't even HAVE another weapon other than me. I own you.

If I could pick someone else, I would, but I don't want to be fondling any other creatures anyways. Forced to touch you is bad enough.

Good....wait...HEY!

He blocked Saliva's triad at how much it was an honor to touch her shapely form as he stood up to take a moment to look at the monitors that Jordan was inspecting. "Does this place get attacked often?" He had been here for the horsemen attack, though he hadn't been up to fighting as he was fresh out of the pod. Then he was here when the fog dragon decided to burn the place. "Is Moby d**k going to swim on by and beach himself on the shore?" He kidded.
PostPosted: Mon Sep 03, 2012 3:26 pm

"Most do," Jordan nodded. "I picked up Madison's weapon once during a battle to return him to her, when she'd been knocked out, and Ferros was furious at me for days. How upset they get depends on the weapon, I guess. There's another reason to avoid it, too," he cautioned. "Holding someone else's weapon for an extended period of time can mess with your mind. I couldn't tell you why - you'd have to ask someone more knowledgeable about the mechanisms of weapon bonding if you want to know - but it can make you a little crazy. Moreso than most of us are anyway," he finished with a shrug.

"Now and then," he answered. "Attacks directly on the island itself aren't a regular occurrence. Other types of weird s**t - well, you can probably expect something bizarre to happen once every month or two. Sometimes it's everyone, sometimes just a few people. Last time something weird happened - well, not counting the weapons golems, that one was deliberately done - we got turned temporarily into minipets." He wasn't saying anything about the horsemen; he'd been trapped in a cell in the lair when the island had been attacked, and hell if he was talking about that. The minipet incident, bizarre and unpleasant as it had been, was a fairly mind-safe subject.

The corner of his mouth quirked in a wry smile. "I don't think anyone's seen Moby d**k in months," he mused. "He usually stays way out in the deep water." Was he kidding? It was impossible to tell.

Out of all the things that Melvin wasn't sure to ask, he decided to prioritize and pick one. "What's a minipet?"
PostPosted: Mon Sep 03, 2012 4:31 pm

"Uh - Halloween animals, little Fear creatures manifested out of stray ideas. There's a section in the labs where minis are kept for study and experimentation. You'll probably get assigned to petting zoo duty sooner or later. They're mostly harmless. A lot of them are pretty cute." Jordan chuckled. "Technically all the minipets kept on the island are lab property. In practice, some of them pretty much belong to one person."

Melvin cringed at the idea in clear disgust at dealing with anything Halloween related, including their animals. "I didn't know we kept their pets, or that anyone would want to keep one. Why not just get a dog?" He leaned over to clean off the monitors while he was here, before moving back to the window.

"I would like to see what the techs find out. I'm not really sure how all these creatures function. I have to read the reference material they said they had on hand for all the hunters about. Apparently everyone knows these things already." Maybe he would be allowed to dissect something? That would be fun.

"So you were one of those little animals? How does that even work?" He was more talking for the sake of talking. Who knew if Jordan even knew all the answers. It was just Melvin's way. He liked asking, and wasn't shy to ask. How else was he supposed to get up to speed and knowledgeable about his new place in life?

He did pause a moment as he looked out at the ocean. It really was the ocean. No fish contained in a little room on the beach, in some aquarium for people to stare at. It was the real deal.

It was rather nice - hand-prints on glass aside.
