The day was in full swing at the Makano pride and Mavi was making her way to one of the race tracks where a race would be beginning within an hour. She had been called down to check out the cheetah's who would be racing today. She liked checking on the cheetah's and giving them full exams before allowing them to race. She'd learned from past experiences never to skip a step when checking a cheetah because it could mean sever injury for that cheetah so she was coming to the track with plenty of time to check everyone.

Usually she had an extra healer who was helping her check the cheetah's which got the task done much faster but today she was by herself. She had several cheetah's to check as there were several races happening one after another. She had been told the schedule of the races so knew which cheetah's to check first. As she neared the race track she headed for the cheetah she would be checking first which was Aoife also known as Coming Near Horizon.

Coming Near Horizon. Aoife didn't quite get why they needed such weird racing names, but her and her sister had enjoyed themselves coming up with their complimentary names, so the more serious of the two had played along and decided it wasn't the worst thing that could happen. At least she hadn't won enough races to warrant someone trying to ask her to breed with some other random male. The thought made her want to gag. Not that she had a problem flinging with someone, but gods, she hoped the cheetah she would end up with in the future was at least good looking. The idea of cubs with clashing pelts was not appealing.

But she had more important things to think of, and worrying about future cubs was silly. At this rate she'd only work herself up and then jepardize her race. She flexed her muscles and looked around. Ah, there. That black and white lioness heading towards her must have been one of the healers here to check her out. She'd been training hard, but Fionn was good at making sure Aoife didn't push herself too hard before a race. There's no point in getting injured before a race, afterall.

As the lioness approached, 'Coming Near Horizon' took a stance to allow the lion to check her over, and have access to see and poke at her from near any angle. She stayed silent though. Aoife wasn't exactly the most talkative cheetah int he pride. Not to say she was unsocial, she just didn't make small talk unless the other seemed interested in it. The sister who was best at being friendly was Fionn.

Mavi walked up to Aoife with a smile on her face. Mavi was a friendly girl and she liked for all the cheetah's she checked to be relaxed and happy when she was around. She didn't like seeing any of the cheetah's nervous before a race. "Good afternoon Aoife. You don't mind if I call you Aoife right? My name is Mavi and I'll be checking your health to make sure you are fit to race." She told the cheetah as she first circled her and did her visual check. "How have you been feeling over all since last night?"

Aoife's stance showed no extra effort to stand and no favoring of any leg. She could see no visible injuries on her. Her breathing was regular and her eyes were focusing fine and unclouded. With her visual check complete she stopped on Aoife's left side. "Will you raise your paws one at a time so I may look at your paw pads please?

The cheetah inspected the lioness a moment before offering a small smile, her attempt at being more friendly, "You can call me Aoife if you like. It doesn't matter to me. Oh, and pleased to meet you Mavi." She added the last bit as an after thought, remembering manners went a long way with others. Aoife stayed still and poised as the healer walked around her, visually checking for any injuries or shakiness. "I've been feeling fine." She replied to the question.

As Mavi instructed her to star lifting her paws one at a time the cheetah complied, starting with her left front paw, her pads looked fine, the normal wear that one wold expect was there, but she was still young, so they seemed to be in good condition. Then the left back pack. Eventually she lifted her right paws one at a time as well.

Mavi checked each pad as Aoife lifted them and nodded. "Your paw pads look good." She stated and then after a moment she lifted one of her own paws and pushed slightly on Aoife's side to see if her balance was good.

"So are you ready to win?" Mavi asked trying to be friendly with Aoife. She prefered to make friends with the cheetah's because if they saw her as a friend they would feel more comfortable telling her their problems. They also wouldn't be too resentful with her if she told them that they would need to set out this race instead of participate.

Aoife resisted the urge to say something sarcastic and just smiled as the healer pushed agaisnt her to check her balance. It wasn't that she disliked this healer, by all means, she had been one of the nicer ones this cheetah had met, but Aoife couldn't get over her own pessimistic and unsociable personality. It was something she was trying to work on, with the help of her sister.

At the question posed Aoife blinked, then gave a genuine smile, her teal eyes shining fiercely, "I'm always ready to win." She said is a smooth and confident voice. This cheetah was very competitive, it was a reason her and her sister never raced one another. One would participate in a race then while they were 'resting up' for the next one, they would help the other train then cheer them on at the next race. It made it so they both had the opportunities to become champions and hopefully one day retire together like they had planned.

"So.. how long have you been a healer with the Makono-epsi?" She asked casually, trying to make small talk and wok on that friendly thing her sister seemed to have down so well, but which Aoife needed obvious work at.

Mavi smiled at Aoife's response to her question. She really liked when the cheetah's were confident in their abilities it usually meant their self esteem was in tact. "Well I don't see any reason why you won't have a very good chance of winning. Your body is in good shape and I find no sickness. We are almost done." She told Aoife as she sat down in front of her.

Aoife's question of how long she had been a healer was a bit of a new one. She'd not been asked that by a racer before but she was not bothered and was happy to answer. "Well I've actually been in the pride since I was a juvenile. I started earning my place as a hunter in the pride but as I grew to an adolescent I became interested in the cheetah's and helping the healers with them. One of the older healers saw potiential in me and trained me to be a healer. I specialize in cheetah's but I can care for lions, wild dogs and hyena's too if I'm needed."

Aoife seemed to be relieved that this 'check up' was almost over. Not that she was sick or injured or anything, but she didn't really like the idea of being looked over like this. What was the point? She wasn't silly enough to race if her body was in bad shape, or if she was ill. "Do other cheetahs try to race even if they are sick or injured?" She asked suddenly, sounding intensely curious.

As Mavi told her about how long she'd been with the pride and how she came to be a healer, tending to pretty much anyone in the pride who needed her Aoife nodded and lifted a brow curiously. So this lion had been doing this a while. That was comforting she supposed. Meant Mavi wouldn't make any mistakes or possibly think Aoife was sick when she wasn't.

Mavi nodded at Aoife's question. She'd never heard this question before but she was cool with answering any questions the cheetah's had for her when she checked them before a race. "Actually yes. I've checked a couple of cheetah's before who were more interested in winning a race than their health." She told her as she remembered the one cheetah she believed that had told her he was fine and she oked him to race. The result had not been pretty for him and she still blamed herself for his injury's he recieved during that race.

"Well you look fit for racing and I am pleased to say you may continue your preperations for the race." She told Aoife as she stopped in front of her and smiled at her. She really loved her job and loved getting to know all the racers individually. "All I have left to say is good luck and I'll see you before your next race." She winked at Aoife and then with a nod headed off to check the next cheetah in the race.

This answer sort of baffled her. She couldn't understand the point in racing if you were sick or hurt, it would just lead to you getting worse, or injuring yourself, possibly others. But all she could do was hope the other healers did as good a job as Mavi in checking out the cheetahs. The last thing Aoife wanted was to race against a sick or injured cheetah if it meant she would be at risk of catching their illness, or getting hurt if they tripped and took out a few other cheetahs.

"Thanks Mavi." She said in a no nonsense tone, but she was sincere. This lion was nice, open and didn't lie to her or treat her like some little prized toy to play with. Not that many of the others had treated her this way, she just noticed how some owners treated the cheetahs like prize winning pets. It was not something Aoife wanted for herself or her sister.

As the lioness began to wander to her next check up, Aoife stretched out her limbs and began to mentally prepare for the race. A small thought in the back of her mind as she put together what she would tell her sister about all this. She only hoped she would go to her sister after winning, and not losing.
