TAB the face in the mirror

He used to have a fuller, stronger physique but age has robbed much of his body muscle. His eyes were once deep-black but have not only deteriorated in vision but also color, rendering more gray today. Wrinkles are permanently etched in between his brows and the skin of his forehead has a fine network of age lines. Frown lines also make his cheeks appear to more prominently stand out. Even so, his aging could be considered graceful, giving him an overall stern bearing. His naturally proud grace also carries the dignity of a respected elder of an aristocratic line.

TAB TABW a r d r o b e
TAB the worse for wear

He prefers wearing plain colored yukatas rather than the Kage robes or the standard Jounin outfit. Shikamori is however seen handling ceremonial affairs only in the traditional Kage's attire thereby indicating he is at least aware of when to respect traditions.

hi'ate
He doesn't wear his Konohagakure hitai-ate anymore. It is kept in the Hokage's office, right next to the portrait of his sensei Zephyr posing with his new Genin team. People whispers that besides the picture, the hitai-ate is the last tangible proof that once upon a time, Shikamori had experienced the most bittersweet happiness and therefore he does not want anything careless to happen to the hitai-ate.

They are small, sharpened, hand-held blades made from a variety of everyday items, such as needles, nails, and knives, as well as coins, washers and other flat plates of metal. They were not designed to kill but rather to distract, harass, scare and deliver poison. This is the weapon that gave ninjas the reputation for being able to attack with "a wave of their hand". They were actually throwing shuriken, but as the shuriken cut through the skin and disappeared into the distance it was as if a cut had appeared by magic.

    Detached
When one lived for long enough -- especially participating in so harsh a trade as the shinobi do -- they would inevitably come to a point where events beyond their power drive them to question of what concept of justice could surely exist in a world as cold and cruel as this... For Shikamori, this is the case, having lived long enough, having survived to see enough. He is not young anymore, but he is also not truly old to have given up to live... Yet, he is already reaching the inevitable stage where one despairs of life. His inability to sympathize and connect with people today was the conclusion he had reached after so many years: attachments could only end in tragedy, when in the end those attachments were inevitably stolen. The only attachment he still holds is the unbreakable connection between him and Konoha: an attachment he has determined from the beginning to end only in his own death lest he dishonors those whom are no longer here.

    Manipulative
He has not lost any of his strategic prowess, remaining a brilliant commander of Konoha to this day, even if formally he has retired from the field to take charge of more "official" duties. Many whisper that the Kage-regent has done a terrific job, because many of those necessary actions were something the Juugodaime Hokage could never have the heart to do, such as the decision to purge all villagers whom were determined guilty of association with the underground order whom plotted to illegally move villagers out of a war-besieged Konoha. This is what separates Shikamori today from even the rest of the Council of Elders, whom continues to act as his advisors today: Shikamori is quite ready to use the willing hearts of Konoha as pieces on a chessboard.

    Iron-hearted
The people important to him are all dead, or worse, as good as dead. Because his only attachment is to the village, Konoha is the most important treasure to Shikamori. He sees his people as two different divisions: there are those whom are innately loyal to the village, and there are those whom are not. Those whom are not he considers the spoiled fruit whose decaying ideas are not allowed to further spread their disease. For those whom are loyal to the village, he considers them as similar as to the idyllic ants: their task in life is to build up their homes and it is for the sake of their homes and what home means to them that they are to give their whole livelihood, including gambling their very lives.

TAB TABb a c k g r o u n d
TAB the secrets you don't need to know
The Year 448
In the late autumn of 448 c.e. the Nara-ke welcomed a new child to the family: Shikamori was the name Lady Shikaoshka chose for her only son. The child was the namesake of her recently-late husband, a former Clan Council Lord.

The Year 456
Nara Shikamori enters the Academy. During his academy year, he befriends Hyuuga princess Yokou.

The Year 458
  • Shikamori becomes the third member chosen for the new Team 13, succeeding the former team led by Juusandaime Hyuuga Rasen. Juusandaime's former student, Senju Zephyr, is named instructor of the new Genin.

  • His teammates are the Princess-heiress Hyuuga Yokou and the young Lord Uchiha Museifu who received the title of Genin of the Year. All three were chosen as the Sennin's students due to their respective positions within their clans.

Despite their high statuses of birth, the team is said to have performed exceptionally well on the field.

The Year 460
Nara Shikamori becomes Chuunin alongside teammate Uchiha Museifu, following Hyuuga Yokou, who was named Chuunin the previous year.

The Year 461
Nara Shikamori is the first of his team to achieve Tokubetsu Jounin rank. His teammates follow shortly later in the year.

The Year 462
  • Shikamori and his teammates completes the ANBU's annual winter selection mission. He joins the intelligence division, while Yokou becomes part of the sentry division. Their teammate, Museifu, becomes part of the Hunter's division.

  • Yokou, who is almost three years older than Shikamori is engaged to Juusandaime Hyuuga Rasen. The wedding is set after she reaches her upcoming seventeenth birthday.

The Year 463
Wedding of the Hyuuga princess. Shikamori and Museifu ruined the ceremony, managing to kidnap the bride, but the attempt ends in overall failure due to unexpected interference from their Sensei whom chastises them for their childish lack of insight.

The Year 464
  • Youkou retires from the ANBU to instead take up the reins as Chief of the village hospital.

  • Museifu follows through with an arranged marriage to fellow clansman Uchiha Hanafubuki. His father Shihou, chief of Uchiha Ichizoku, invites Yokou and Shikamori to attend the wedding ceremony. Yokou declines, but Shikamori attends.

The Year 470
  • Museifu's elder brother, Akegata, returns to Konoha with his wife. Chief of Uchiha family Shihou retires and gives the position to his eldest son. Museifu now holds the title of heir to Uchiha Ichizoku for Akegata's wife, Kasumi, had not been able to provide Akegata with an heir.

  • Museifu is forced to retire from the ANBU by the clan for "safety precautions".

The Year 480
  • Chief of family Akegata welcomes his infant daughter, the Princess Saiya, to the world. Saiya receives the honorary title of heiress in place of Museifu.

  • Shikamori is promoted to Chief of all the ANBU forces.

  • All three of Zephyr's former students were named Kage candidates in that year's report.

The Year 484
  • Shikamori acts as a confidant for Museifu, who is deeply troubled by the clan pressures to produce a spare heir. He consoles his teammate - now best friend after so many years - to the best of his ability. However, as Shikamori is often away on missions, Museifu's unstable condition gradually worsens.

  • News of the Hyuuga princess's pregnancy.

  • At the end of the year, Museifu and Hanafubuki adopts a five-year-old orphan boy named Kokuyoku.

The Year 485
  • In early spring, Princess Hyuuga Elruda is born.

  • Near the end of spring, Uchiha Akeru is born to Museifu and his wife. Shikamori notices how not even once did his friend hold the child... Despite this, the boy receives plenty of adoring love not only from his mother and older brother, but also from his godparents, Yokou and Zephyr.

The Year 487
  • Zephyr suddenly departs from Konoha after the Summer Solstice Festival without bidding his students good-bye. They are told, by Lord Juusandaime, that their Sensei won't be returning.

  • Konoha politically clashes with Takigakure over the issue of the missing-nin organization that village housed: the Fifth Dawn.

The Year 493
  • Despite all the political turmoil, Yokou and Shikamori prepares a birthday party for Akeru, who is to enter the Academy the upcoming semester. Preparations come to a crashing halt when they are contacted by the ANBU, who claims a disaster has occurred at the Uchiha village. They would find the Uchiha taking away Hanafubuki and Kokuyoku's corpses.

  • The pair would spend the evening not in celebrations, but tracking down and facing their apparently now-mad teammate at the borders of Konoha forest. Angry that Museifu has done such a thing to his own family, Yokou quickly ends up engaging him in combat.

  • When she is injured, Shikamori manages to falsify their deaths by collapsing the area with Doton and barricading their chakra signatures with shadows. He waits until Museifu leaves the area before signaling for help.

The Year 494
  • Yokou is hospitalized. In the course of the following few days, Shikamori hears more terrible news: Rasen had gone after Museifu, intending to track down the missing-nin. The Juusandaime never returned.

  • A week after Museifu's flight from Konoha, Senju Zephyr briefly makes a reappearance in Konoha, bearing the Sharingan eyes he had torn from Museifu. He meets with the Council of Elders, whom had kept in contact with him.

Meanwhile Shikamori hears the news. Astonished, and wondering if their Sensei had truly killed Museifu, the Senju Sennin's sure favorite... Shikamori makes up his mind to confront Zephyr.

But Zephyr departed from the village again within the very same day.

  • Juuyondaime Akki Cerbi is inaugurated.

  • Chief of Uchiha Akegata gives the position of chief to his daughter, and retires with his wife to the countryside. It was said his younger brother's betrayal of the village had tired him greatly.

  • The Council of Elders reports they have lost contact with the Sennin Senju Zephyr. Apparently, Zephyr had been living in a cabin near the ruins of Kumo, but when the ANBU was sent to contact him again, only the empty cabin was left behind.

The Year 495
  • The Fifth Dawn had recklessly released the seal upon the Go-ryu Masters, legendary immortal shinobi said to possess power to rival the bijuus.

  • Uchiha Akeru is sent to his cousin in Otogakure for recuperation, which is a fortunate event considering not long after Konoha is invaded by the Fire Master and his army.

  • Juuyondaime Akki Cerbi falls in battle, and the main forces of Konoha were forced to flee west. More problematic than the unexpected power of the Fire Master were the traitors of Konoha whom welcomed the Fire Master's appearance as an opportunity to once again transform Konoha into a mighty military state.

Meanwhile, Nara Shikamori acts as the strategist for the scattered forces and manages to keep the shinobi collected. He would plan their avoidance from the Fire Master's forces while his former teammate Yokou commanded the Eseinin whom were stranded with the army.

The Year 496
  • The Fire Master reigns over Konoha. Despite smaller families choosing to submit to the new regime, the loyalty-bound aristocratic clans refused to acknowledge the usurper as the Juugodaime. They barricade themselves within their clan estates, with the Senju clan secretly providing food for the rebellious families.

Konoha comes to an effective economic stasis.

To deal with their own villagers whom were now working for the usurpers, for the first time in almost fifty years since Konoha fought the So Koun alliance, the aristocratic families once again had to resort to guerrilla warfare.

  • The Fire Master desires for more land for Hi no Kuni. In his preparations for war with Taki, Hyuuga clan's Nyame, chief of the Forge, conspired with her supporters to sabotage the weapon supplies.

  • Meanwhile, the exiled army traveled the lands, shifting leaders often. They finally arrive at Iwagakure, where they were received quite well, with the stipulation of one price: the sharing of certain secrets Konoha had prized. Nara Shikamori volunteered, choosing to teach Iwagakure Taijutsu Master's young son, Roy, the Kagemane no Jutsu.

  • Senju Zephyr shows up in Iwagakure no Sato, to his students' anger and subsequent joy. The reunion is made more chaotic by Zephyr's now-wild personality after years of living as a hermit... Oddly enough, that made him get along very well with the Iwagakurians. Thanks to Zephyr, Konoha did not have to further exchange secrets.

The Year 497
  • The Fire Master, in a bid to take Takigakure's land, is killed by the Takikage and her attendants. There is no celebration among the Konohagakurian loyalists however, duly annoyed that they were not able to have the pleasure of ridding the usurper themselves. Anger is turned inward: to deal with the traitors of their own village accordingly.

They are interrupted only by the timely arrival of the ones whom they believed to be long dead. The troupe whom were once under the command of Lady Cerbi returns from the west: this time led by the long-missing Sennin Senju Zephyr. They bear not only intriguing stories from the events of the years of their exile but also rich gifts from Iwagakure. Apparently, Zephyr had become good friends with Juugodaime Tsuchikage Taida Marcus during the duration of their stay.

  • In order to prevent Zephyr from leaving Konoha again, and desiring the possibility of a good relationship with the mighty and prosperous Iwa, the Council of Elders were quick to name him Juugodaime Hokage.

  • Zephyr assumes office -- for the first time since Juusandaime inaugurated with all the ceremonial traditions. His first act was to pardon the Konohagakurians accused of either accepting the Fire Master's regime or the worst of the two crimes: of swearing loyalty to the Go-ryu Master. Despite the controversy, the period of reestablishment proceeds smoothly, furthered by the good news of the disbandment of the Fifth Dawn.

Konoha enters a period of economic revivification.

  • At the end of the year, Iwagakure is chosen to host the annual international Chuunin Exams. Konoha participates, but was forced to leave before the promotion ceremony due to news of troubles on the home front.

Little did they know, they would not become the only embassy to depart early.

The Year 498
  • The Fire Damiyo was apparently succeeded by his nephew - the princess is missing, and the new Damiyo expresses hostility towards the concept of organized shinobi forces. He had managed to collect discontented samurai whom were uprooted again by reorganized shinobi villages from the Juushodaime's era and shinobi whom were no longer loyalty-bound to any village. Rumors say many of Taki's former Fifth Dawn members now works for the Damiyo.

  • The Fire Damiyo's army manages to conquer Kusagakure and encroaches upon the borders of Konohagakure Forest. Fortunately, the siege had only lasted ten days - the Juugodaime's returning representatives shifted the tide of the battle.

  • The Fire Damiyo's troops are driven back across the Garian River that is at the edge of the forest, before being forced beyond the Kurama Bridge. Konohagakurian forces does not pursue as the Damiyo's army retreats back to over Kusagakure territory.

  • Village fortifications are made. The Senju royal family establishes a complex Fuu system to protect the village.

  • The Council of Elders debate whether or not to declare war on Shenlong, the capital of Hi no Kuni. Civil unrest in Konoha erupts when the Council decides to declare the Damiyo is not the rightful heir of the throne. Nomadic tribes and shinobi-civilian families contend the decision, as well as a fair number of aristocrats, all whom are not ecstatic at all about welcoming war again for declaring such a statement was as good as throwing down the war gauntlet.

Little did the villagers know, when Konoha's Council received news about Iwa regarding the Taida-controlled Council rising against Juuyondaime Taida Marcus, moving now became a necessity in the event that the Konoha-friendly Juuyondaime Tsuchikage is overthrown.

Konoha also accepts Iwagakurian-loyalists whom flees the Earth Country borders, despite knowing fully well the implicit consequences.

The Year 499
  • When it became the Council would not budge, a secret underground society was formed from the discontented natives. The underground society manages to move one large group of Konohagakure youth out of the village but the second group is caught. Juugodaime Hokage orders imprisonment for all those involved.

  • The Council announces that an ambush on the home front has claimed the life of the Sennin Lady Hyuuga Yokou.

  • The Juugodaime disappears from the political front. The Senju royal family claims a terrible accident has happened, and that for an undetermined amount of time, the Juugodaime will not be able to act. The Council of Elders elects from among themselves a regent.

  • Nara Shikamori is chosen as regent. He reviews the case of the imprisoned, but chooses to file instead for execution. He wins the debate presented before the Council and permission is granted.

  • A period of inquisition follows, with the intelligence division of the ANBU searching from house to house for any proof of treachery. Those whom were found to be in possession of contrary evidence were also imprisoned and placed on the death row.

Despite there being a few from his own clan, Shikamori is unmoved by the final petitions.

  • Konoha is further fortified, and even stricter curfew and watch arrangements are made. Due to these fortifications, not much can be achieved on the battle fronts with such reduced numbers.

The Year 500
  • The reemergence of Ame into the global sphere provides opportunity for Konoha. Juugodaime's adoptive daughter, Sakeme, is presented before Konoha as the official Amegakurian ambassador. Furthermore, the new Fubuki Amekage welcomes warmly her nephew Shinratsu, who is one of the Iwagakurian refugees.

  • Konoha and Amegakure reestablishes relations.

  • With the aid of their allies, Konoha launches a series of vicious counterattacks, and manages to secure the northern border of Fire Country. Even though initially met with hostility, Konoha was greatly responsible for restoring damages done by the Damiyo's army: all a strategic plan of Nara Shikamori to regain the Hi no Kuni people's trust.

During the joint shinobi army's slow move over the northern half of the country, they hear rumors that the former Damiyo's daughter is still alive.

  • As the standstill continues, Shikamori organizes search parties for the Fire Princess. Hi no Kuni today is divided in two: with the northern half under Konohagakurian-Amegakurian occupation, and the southern half of the country under Damiyo occupation.
