It had been days now since he had begun tracking a criminal who had broke into Peke'Na borders and murdered one of their pack members. The pain had been unimaginable even though Dief had hardly knew the member well, they were still part of his pack family. Equality and all that. So he set out to track down the killer and bring them to justice.

He paused to take a breath and catch his bearings, it was already mid-day on travel day three. He knew he should be tired but surprisingly lethargy had yet to hit him. He spotted a hidden nock that contained water and he sighed with relief. "A good sign indeed." He bent down to drink.

She was exhausted, though she would never admit it. So tired, her paws ached with every step forward that she took. Having worked day in and day out for the past 3 days, had given her little opportunity to regain her strength. Something she needed desperately, to maintain her strong, resilient nature. Though she never gave in to her weaknesses, the break she was now on, would give her time to do so. Time away from the judgmental eyes of her sisters. Not that most of her sisters would, but there were some ...

Wincing yet again, she placed her paws against the hot sand at her feet. The sun was hardly giving her any relief, more like torture. She needed water, but she needed rest more. What was a girl to do? Well, she wasn't a girl, she was a lioness! She knew exactly what to do. Take care of your most basic needs first! The rest will fall into place. Umeme nodded silently to herself, and she glanced around. Up just ahead of her was a nice grouping of trees. A nice place to rest, given the relentless sun above. The shade would provide her some relief, though how much, she wasn't willing to guess on.

That rest stop and water seemed to help immensely, but it also made him realize how much his paws were aching. Dief survied the land with the squinting of his eyes as the sun was in full force it seemed today. "Ah." He spotted what appeared to be a crop of trees around dirted land off in the distances. Not only a more acceptable rest stop but also a possibility for a fugitive to lay in wait for a few days. That was more than enough to get him moving towards the trees. His eyes narrowed when he started to pick up a scent the closer he got to his destination. He paused to take a deep breath ignoring the beating sun on his thick fur. Something was queer, it didn't smell like a dog more like a ... cat.

She knew he was coming, quite possibly before he himself even knew he was. It was what she was trained for after all. To be prepared for any possible scenario that could ever happen anywhere. She knew it was a male by the strong scent of musk, and canine by what she presumed was his breath. Dogs always had smelly breath.

A smirk crossed her lips as she waited for him to confront her. She had no idea what a dog would be doing this close to a pack of lions, but he was bored. Perhaps his story would relieve her of at least a little of that boredom. If not, she'd have to find some other way. But from his scent, he should have approached her by now. He was close - though exactly how close was still a mystery.

Turning in the direction of his smell, she caught sight of him. Standing off to the west, with a strange look on his face. So he had caught her scent as well...

"Are you going to come over here, or just stand there all day?

Not that it matters, I guess, its just driving me crazy not knowing."

She had to raise her voice a bit to get them across the yard to him. But she was confident they would reach them.

Dief frowned at her words, but wandered closer anyways. The location afterall was near the missing pup. "Oh dear," He spoke the words softly as he took in the lioness. His nose had not lead him wrong and there was indeed a feline in his eyes sight. A blunt one at that, not that there was anything wrong with that. He spoke louder inorder for her to hear him. "Ah yes, you wouldn't happen to have seen a young pup wander near here?"

Diefenbaker's eyes narrowed in hope as he wandered closer watching for a 'tell' in the felines movements to his inquiry. He had been trained to identify a lie through movements of the body. "I do not have much time, it has been hours since his gone missing and a pup can only last so long on its own." He hoped that his plight appealed to the lion. Not that that pup would mean anything to her but he hoped it would. Not only making his job easier but also for the pups sake.

Umeme was slightly taken aback by the dog's way of speaking. It was .. different than what she would normally hear. But then again, she was a little far from home, maybe everyone around here had strange polite accents? She shrugged it off, better to contemplate it later when she didn't have guests.

"A pup? You mean like one of you?"Her heart sank a bit at the thought that this could be the pup's Father. She wasn't meant to have cubs of her own, but if she were, she couldn't begin to imagine the pain he must feel. But his next words quickly put her off to the Father Son relationship. She frowned, making ti obvious she was disappointed in herself. Wasn't this part of her job? Well maybe not to keep track of pups ... but to be of use to those in need? Wild dog or not? "I'm sorry to say, I have not. Though perhaps if you gave me an idea of where you're from, I could advise you on where to go?" Obviously it wasn't the biggest help in the world, but she would do what she could to help those around her. Whether she liked it or not. Though in this case, she was liking the idea of finding a pup .. it kept her mind off of more boring things.

Diefenbaker nodded his head in agreement. "Yes, you see the pups parents are very worried as well. The whole pack is out and about looking for said pup; his parents included. My gut was telling me to come this way and it seems by the recent scent of him. I am on the right trail." Diefenbaker smiled at the kind gesture. "Help would be very much appreciated-" Still he paused somewhat at the thought of revealing the name of his home, but desperate times and all that. "The name of our pack is called the PekeNa. The location I can not tell you where it is or I will be in trouble." A breeze smacked him in the nose and he whirled his head around. "He is around here." A noise, a little howling whimper broke through their conversation. "I must hurry."

Umeme tried to calm the wolf, but she really had no idea what this type of situation called for. She'd never dealt with a lost cub, at the most she'd dealt with a simple boo boo from the royal litter... this was way out of her league. "You must have quite the nose then, to follow the scent of a cub or pup. They don't normally leave very good scents. Except ... y'know poop smells." She smiled weakly, nodding as the male refused to admit their location. She could respect that, it was part of his pack's code. Honorable of him.

Umeme's ears flattened as she heard the whimper. "Now hold your horses. Nothing this far out would want a pup for dinner, and he's not likely to hurt himself in this terrain. It's just sand and trees." Umeme nodded to herself in agreement. "There are plenty of places he could be, but perhaps some of the easiest are right in our grasp. His calls just now, only narrowed down the search. A smart pup that one is."

He almost missed her words as she was speaking in his right ear; his deaf one. "Oh yes. You see what I lack in hearing I make up for in smell as well as sight and yes Ma'am-" He nodded in agreement. He wasn't too upset at the situation as he had been in numerial rescues, some had gone wonderful while others... not so much. "-I am in agreement. One should access the situation before doing anything rash. Excuse me a second." He paused to take a deep breah before letting out a reassuring howl to let the pup know he was near and coming to help. The answering yip back was comforting and closer than before. He moved ahead a little ways to look downward on the sand hill they were currently perched on. He peered off in the distance a little ways and spotted the wayward pup leaning against a small tree.

He turned to smile charmingly at the lioness. "Well, this is where I take my leave." He was happy that things had turned out the way they did. Not everything had a happy ending when it came things such as these. "The pup needs to be brought home and I think that he will think twice before going off on his own again."

Umeme let out an obvious sigh of relief at the pup's returning howl. As unhappy of a lioness as she appeared to be, she was a real sap for a happy ending.

She dipped her head in understanding to the male, as he smiled back at her. "I understand." She smiled freely to the male, and ushered him away with her paw. "Be sure to give him a lecture about all the mean scary lions around these parts." Giggling slightly at her own odd joke, Umeme turned her attentions back to her boredom. Now that the case of the lost puppy was solved, what more was there she could do?
