The last two days had been quite interesting. Hypnos had escorted Oke to one of the small groups whom had split off from the main herd to ensure they were all well and offer her services as a healer if needed. It was nice to be able to watch Oke work and he could see that she truly loved what she was doing. This trip also allowed him to gather information about what lay outside his regular patrol routes. He had bargained with another scout to fill his night patrols for a couple of nights so that he and Oke could make this small journey, but it had a second purpose for the herd. They knew what was just beyond the borders but what about further out, past where the scouts regularly wandered. Well this small group had gave him some insight into that. They had told him of the occasional Soquili passing by, that a cougar had been spotted once but it had moved on a good week or so ago and other than that all was quiet.
Now he and Oke were on their way back to the herd. They wouldn't be able to reach the herd before nightfall as they had gotten a late start in the day but he wasn't going to complain about spending just a little extra time with her. He had learned a lot about her in these last few days and really wished their schedules weren't so different. The sun was beginning to set now and he would need to get them someplace safe for the night. "There is a small sheltered grove not far from here. It will be a good safe place to stop for the night." He probably could have continued on and pushed himself to reach the herd by dawn or shortly after, but he didn't want to tire Oke out. Plus like he had been thinking earlier a little extra time with her would be nice. "They really seemed to be happy with your help." He mentioned as they walked along, the group was small and didn't have any healers among them. But they had promised to keep in touch so Oke could travel there again in the future if needed.

This had been a great trip - not only had she been able to sort out a few minor problems with the newly started off shoot herd, but she'd been able to spend some extra time with Hypnos. It might not seem like much to anyone else but to Oke it meant the world - she rather liked the stallion, he was good and brave and just the sort of stallion that she would have taken home to her mother. It was really too bad that he was active during the night while she spent most of her time active during the day.
Well..she wasn't going to ruin the last of her trip with him thinking about such thoughts. That would be a waste. When he suggested they stop to spend the night in a small clearing she gave him a warm look - grateful that he wasn't wanting to push through the night. She would have if he had insisted but truth be told she was tired from the days work and the unaccustomed traveling already. "I hope so, I felt so badly for that little foal with the cut over his eyes - I'm hopeful that it will heal without a scar now that I've given them something for the infection though" She stated, always happy to talk about her work."The grove sounds lovely, have you stayed there before?"

Hypnos looked over at Oke with a smile. Anytime she spoke about her work her face lit up and it made him happy. She loved her job just as much as he loved his. Those who were passionate about their jobs often performed them to their fullest. "I'm sure he will heal up nicely. And we can always come back and check up on him and the rest of them in the coming weeks." He had made sure to say 'we' instead of 'you', because if he could spend some more time with her in the future that would be nice. Plus it was a somewhat long journey to the group and he didn't want to think of her traveling alone, especially if something happened to her.
He gave his head a nod. "When we first came here the scouts ventured out a lot further than we do now to make sure we had plenty of fair warning of danger since so much was unknown to us. So I stayed here a few times when my watch ended. But now we know the area well enough that it doesn't get used unless someone is traveling to or from the herd."He came to a stop, glancing around for a moment before continuing. "Should be just up here." He explained. "Though the entrance might be a little overgrown, I didn't see it very clearly when we came out this way a few days ago." Without the constant stream of Soquili going in and out of the grove the plants had a chance to hide away the entrance, which in a way was a blessing as it would provide them with a well sheltered spot to sleep in.

"Well that makes sense" Oke stated with a nod of her head after Hypno's had explained how he knew of the grove. It was nice to be traveling with someone who was used to it - made her feel a bit more confident about spending the night away from the protection of a herd. It wasn't often that she did so - only a few times in the past when some medical emergency had necessitated it.
Following after Hypno's, Oke peered into the darkness looking for any sign of this grove he was talking about. Of course her eyes were not as accustomed to looking for things such as that in the dark and she quickly realized that the chances of he spotting it were slim to none. Best to just stick close to Hypno's and let him do the job he was so good at.
Of course, unknown to the two Soquili, they were not the only thing on the trai this night - trailing a bit behind them was a Coyote, lean, thin..starving, the scarred creature was on the look out for an easy meal. Of course he was currently so famished that any sort of meal would do..he wasn't going to let any chance go by.

His pace slowed as Hypnos used his lamp to peer into the edge of the trees looking for signs of the old path. It took a few moments for him to find it but finally he could see a spot where the growth was new and now quite as thick as the other places. "I think this is it." He said and carefully pawed at the vines and plants that blocked the entrance to the clearing. His hoof hit something hard and he bend down to look. The soft light from his lamp illuminated a rock and he gave his head a nod. "Yup, this is it. That rock marks the clearing entrance." All he had to do was clear the way and they would have a place to sleep.
Glancing over at Oke he saw that she was standing close to him and it made him smile. She wasn't used to the night like he was, so she really did need to put all her trust into him to get them to the clearly. Turning his attention back to the overgrown path Hypnos set about clearing it as quickly as he could. There was only a little bit of light left from the sun now and soon only his lamp would allow them to see what was ahead. With a final kick the vines fell down giving them a clear way to the small grove. Hypnos led the way until he reached the edge of the clearing then stepped to the side so that Oke could see and be let past. "Here we are. That long grass will be nice to lay down in." He pointed his lamp towards the other side of the small grove illuminating the grass in the pale blue light. Walking out into the grove Hypnos looked for a branch where he could hand his lamp for the night.

Oke couldn't see what had caught Hypno's eyes at all - she merely nodded agreeably when he sated that this was the entrance to the grove they had been looking for. Truth be told to her eyes..all the plant growth looked pretty much the same, but if he said this was it then she was just going to have to trust that he was right. She tried to help him with the clearing part but in the end she found she was just getting in the way more then helping and backed off to let him handle it. It was nice to see him in his element just as he had seen her in hers during the healing at the herd.
"I really don't now how you manage to remember all of this, places and pathways and signs" She told him with a warm look as she looked about the grove - it would make the perfect sheltered place to spend the night. "That grass looks lovely and I'm absolutely beat" Oke agreed as she moved towards the grass with a large yawn. She was so tired she might even skip eating and just lay down right now.
The coyote had sat and watched as the two Usdia cleared out the pathway - a lone usdia he might have attacked right off the bat but two? Well two were a bit much to take on on your own..no he would wait until they settled down to rest for the night - then perhaps he could kill one and drag it off while the other slept..or scare them into bolting during the night and separate them from each other.
Licking his lips at the mere thought of such a meal the Coyote slunk along in the undergrowth, following and listening at the pair started to settle in for the night. He hoped they went to sleep quickly...he wasn't sure how much long his hunger would let him stay still and wait.

A smile had crossed his lips when Oke had tried to help him clear the way but she had quickly given up on the task, leaving it to him. He didn't mind her helping but it certainly was a one Soquili job considering how narrow the path was. Glancing over at Oke he smiled widely, the lamp still help in his teeth. "It's something you really have to work on. Though in a way it's no different than what you do. I see you working with so many different herbs and you need to remember what they are called, what they look like, what each of them does and know which one can and can't be mixed with others." Finally he found a broken off branch that he could hang his lamp from and paused for a moment carefully setting his prized possession up there. "Herbs and pathways, they are all the same in the end. It's all about memory and learning how to retain that information."
He caught her yawning and couldn't help but yawn as well. Yawn were a horribly contagious thing. Hypnos wasn't all that tired yet, he hadn't been out of his routine long enough to feel sleep tugging at him, plus he would be returning to his night duties once they got back so it was best to stick with his routine as much as he could at this point. "You had best get some rest, we still have a ways to go before reaching the herd." Though he wasn't tired Hypnos did settle down into the long grass, he worried that if he told Oke he planned to stay up through most of the night she might not sleep. Best to let her think he was going to sleep and then spend the night watching the grove. The grass felt great underneath him, it was still soft enough to act like a pillow, puffing up around him where his weight did not fully push it down. Now that he was done he wondered how long he could fight the effects of a comfortable place if Oke remained awake. He needed his sleep schedule to not be thrown off but this grass bed was not helping.

"I suppose that's true" Oke agreed once he had put it in that light - she certainly did have to remember a lot and she could recognize a hundred different herbs at a mere glance, just as he could spot the differences along the path which spoke of good or bad conditions..or the overgrown opening to a comfortable resting place.
Seeing him yawn as well made her feel better about being as tired as she was - if he was tired to well, then perhaps she wasn't as ill suited to this traveling thing as she had first thought. " I think that's probably a good idea" Oke agreed as she lay down next to the stallion. The glow of his lantern in the fading light was nice - it cast a subtle glow over the clearing that made her feel safe despite being outside the herd with its many guards to keep watch. Before to long Oke's eyes had closed and her breathing had deepened.
Yes..yes this was nearly the perfect time. The coyote had waited as the mare fell asleep, waited until he knew that she was good and deeply asleep and while he couldn't see the stallions face he was pretty sure he was asleep as well. It it wasn't for that dratted lantern casting such a bright glow on the place he'd be able to see better.
Oh well, one had to deal with the cards once was dealt and right now he had two sleeping meals sitting right before him. The mare was the smaller of the two and so he dubbed her the easiest target..slinking through the grass the coyote skirted the light until his was right beside the mare, his eyes flashing in the lantern light as only a predators can mere moments before he leapt out of the woods with fangs flashing as he aimed for the sleeping mares throat.

Hypnos watched as Oke settled down into the grass and cast a smile at her. Laying his head down he wanted to make sure she was completely asleep before getting up to spent the night watching the grove. Problem was he was having a hard time fighting off sleep. He wasn't used to so much activity during the day and traveling was quite tiring. As he fought to stay awake he watched Oke's eyes close and before long he could hear her rhythmic breathing letting him know she was asleep.
His eyelids drooped begging him to take even a short nap. Must resist, he scowled himself, knowing he would be in terrible shape for his duties when they got back to the herd. He was winning but only just barely. His half closed eyes surveyed the area around them, it was a quiet night...wait...had he just seen eyes flash in the darkness. Hypnos' head snapped but just in time to see the coyote launch himself at Oke. "Oke!" He yelled and was instantly on his feet. He had only a short distance to cover to reach Oke but he feared he wouldn't make it before the coyote's jaws were on her. With a push from his back legs the stallion surged forward, kicking out with his front legs at the coyote, praying that if Oke woke she wouldn't move into them. He had to protect her. Teeth flashed as he opened his mouth, sending a bite at the wretched beasts back.

The coyote's mad starving dash was slowed slightly as the stallion called out - blast, he had thought the beast to be asleep. He should have waited longer but hunger had won out over patience and a growling stomach was a demanding master. Checking his lunge the coyote tried to avoid the stallion's flashing hooves with a dart sideway's a small yip escaped his lips as the stallions teeth snagged his back however, teeth raking a furrow down his back.
Growling and bristling and too hungry to realize he was fighting a loosing battle the Coyote spun around and launched himself at the stallion instead jaws snapping at the beast's legs. If he could break a leg then the stallion would be all bu helpless - he knew this from hunting deer.
Oke's head jerk up as Hypno's screamed her name and for a few moments everything seemed to happen in slow motion as the mare's tired mind tried to figure out what was happening. Hypno's hooves flashed by in front of her nose and a furred form yelped in pain and spun around. Wolf! Was her instant through and terrified she lunged to her feet, taking half a stride towards the trees before pausing, they ought to run, running was their only chance against a wolf..but Hypno's was fighting, fighting to save her and she couldn't just run off an leave him!
Spinning back around the little mare refocused on the fight- not a wolf she saw with a great deal of relief...but s coyote, coyotes were much more doable, not pleasant but at least they stood a chance. Of course she had no idea what to do - Oke wouldn't know how to fight if her life depended on it..which was kind of ironic she thought - since it very well might right now. "Hypnos!" She cried out. "Hypnos's what should I do?" Seeing a branch laying on the ground nearby she snatched it up in her jaws and tried to whack the coyote with it.

Hypnos was so grateful that his hooves didn't collide with Oke when she awoke to his yell. But he had no choice, he had to warn her just in case he didn't make it over to her in time. But luck was on his side tonight, not only did he miss hitting her but his teeth had hit their mark on the coyote leaving a painful bite on the creatures back. In that time Oke had gotten to her feet and had put some distance between herself and the coyote. Good, he didn't want to worry about her in the fray of the fight. But hearing her yell turned his attention away from the fight for a fraction of a second. In that moment she had taken a stick in her mouth and was using it like a club against the coyote. Brave of her since he was almost certain Oke knew nothing about fighting, but he didn't want her to get hurt...or accidentally hit him with the stick.
"Oke stay back!" He yelled and pulled his attention back to the coyote. But that momentary lapse in attention left the coyote at the advantage. He didn't have enough time to react, he reared up trying to pull his legs away but the coyotes teeth sank into his left left, though it's jaw had not completely wrapped around it like would have happened had he not had that second to react. Hypnos let out a cry of pain and then slammed his right hoof down towards the coyotes back. He had to get his leg free but pulling it out of the coyotes jaws would only cause extra damage, the creature had to let go and if his hoof landed chances were it would let go just long enough for him to get it free.

The coyote snarled around the leg that he had grabbed, shaking his head furiously from side to side to try and knock the little stallion off balance, he ignored the branch the mare was trying to beat him with - she was hitting him from the leaf side and really it wasn't doing much in the way of damage. It was clear that she had no idea what she was doing so he kept his attention on the stallion. When the beast reared back and tried to slam a hoof down on his back the Coyote was more then willing to let go..if only to dodge under the stallions stamping hooves and try to lunge for his exposed and vulnerable underbelly. Maybe he'd dine on the stallion tonight instead of the mare after all.
Her strikes with the branch didn't seem to be doing anything useful, the coyote was all but ignoring her but she seemed to be distracting Hypnos and so when he asked her to stay back..she backed off. She couldn't help pacing back and forth and shaking as she watched the fight however, cringing and crying out as she the beast lunge towards Hypno's underbelly. Maybe she should go for help..but that would require running blindly through the woods blindly and who knew how far she would have to go - no she would have to stay here and hope that Hypno's chased the beast away - it was likely that he would need healing after the fight. Anxiously she danced in place and snorted.

Hypnos gritted his teeth against the pain as the coyote thrashed it's head back and fourth, ripping open his leg even worse than the initial bite. Blasted beast was going to make him lame if he didn't let go soon. Thank goodness he was with Oke, she would be able to help him, but first he had to get rid of this coyote. Just as his right hoof came down the coyote let go of his other leg and disappeared underneath him. Knowing full well what the little beast had planned Hypnos pushed off with his hind legs, feeling the coyotes teeth snap shut just out of reach of his belly. He landed a short distance away, pain shooting up from his ripped apart leg as it slammed into the ground. But now was no time to let that distract him. The coyote was still here and now he had moved so that he was no longer a barrier between it and Oke.
Hynpos charged at the beast, lashing out with his legs once more, ignoring the blood that sprayed from his wound. All the while he was circling around the coyote, trying to place himself in back in front of Oke to be a sheild against the coyote, better it's attention be on him since he had experience and training fighting than on her. If he could do a bit more damage to it perhaps it would change it's mind and look elsewhere for a meal. Teeth snapped at the beasts side, attempting to drive it back.

When the stallion jumped over him and his jaws snapped shut on thin air, the coyote inwardly cursed his luck - if only the beast had remained sleeping, he would have been happily filling his belly right now. Sadly with teh way things were going he was starting to fear that he would grow to tired to hunt any longer if this fight kept up. With the stallion still gathering himself behind him the coyote cast a hungry maddened gaze upon the mare and snarled, spittle flinging from its jaws as it advanced upon her menacingly. Lowering himself to lunge..just as the stallion, who in his hunger he had briefly forgotten about, rushed him from behind, the gnash of teeth against flesh brought a yelp to his lips and the Coyote decided he had had enough of this, tail between his legs he made a dash for the tree's and the shadows.
Oke trembled when the Coyote turned upon her, backing away with widened eyes until her rump hit a tree, before the starving beast could attack however Hyno's was suddenly there, teeth flashing as he snapped at the creatures side..and the coyote, taken by surprise, seemed to have decided that he could find an easier meal somewhere else because it suddenly broke off it's attack and ran towards the trees. While she was loathe to consider the Coyote truly gone, Oke turned her attention to Hypno's, his leg was bloody and in the darkness it was hard to tell how much damage had been done. "Hypno's! Let it go!" She urged the stallion before he decided to chase after the beast. "Your leg needs attention."

He had worried in that moment he saw the coyote turn towards Oke that he wouldn't be able to get in between in time with his injured leg. But the beast was scrawny and not in as good of condition as other coyotes he had seen and that was a blessing. He managed to bite the beast again only this time it sent the critter running. Yet Hypnos refused to let his guard down so quickly, predators were tricky things and sometimes ran off to allow a sense of relief to wash over their intended victim, having them let down their guard before they came around again for a second round. Ears turned towards Oke's voice but he continued to chase the scraggly beast until it disappeared into the trees. "Wait." He told her perhaps a bit too sternly but his adrenaline was still pumping and he didn't want to turn to look at her only to have the coyote jump on his back.
After a few moment Hypnos finally turned back towards Oke. He doubted the coyote would return now. Ignoring his own injuries he half limped over to Oke. "Are you okay? It didn't hurt you did it?" He could feel the blood running down his leg, knew he needed her help in getting patched up but just had to make sure she was okay first. With his adrenaline fading away the pain in his leg brought him back to reality. "Let's go over to where my lamp is so you can have a good look at this." Turning Hypnos limped over to where his lamp cast a small circle of light and laid down, stretching out his injured leg for Oke to look at.
