She was sweating quite a bit. Atta ghoul, Xiu. Was'a good workout today. They'd amazingly slipped passed the hoard of interviewers parading around the campus grounds as of late due to the Horsemen Trials.
It had just been the day before that they were put to the test by giant crabs and sandcastle making/guarding. The press wanted to know about their going-ons and it was difficult to do anything outside the dorms without being prompted for answers. Levi had already gotten stuck answering things once.
So the ghouls found their solace in the woods near a familiar cave, only recently opened to the students. Patting at her forehead with one end of the towel swung over her neck, the tatzel ghoul grinned at the baku. Good thing ya'll could meet me out'ere today, eh?
Dang reporters. Levi didn't mind large crowds, but it was their manner that made her want to flee. Their mouths spat out words like pistols, she thought.

Interviewers was the worst thing ever.
Truth be told, the baku had kind of panicked when the reporters flocked her, their eyes hungry as they held up notepads and tape recorders. After a few, weak attempts to escape, Xiu finally blurted out a rapid, "Sorry, I need to run to the grocery store to pick up my laundry for my sick minipets!" all in one breath...and all in Chinese. If the reporters hadn't been confused by the sudden foreign language, then her random sentence was sure to make them pause for a couple of seconds at least.
A couple of very precious seconds--seconds that she used to get the hell out of there.
It wasn't until she finally met up with Levi did she finally relax. Despite the fact that the prior day's events--more specifically, the battle with the crabs--had left the baku somewhat sore, she would never turn down a sparring invitation from her big sister. Besides, if there was one thing that the Famine trials had taught her, she would have to be in decent shape if she wanted to get through the next few trials.
"Y-yes, it went well! Thank you as always, jiejie!" She gave an embarrassed tailwag, lifting a hand to wipe at her forehead. Her expression then became wary as she looked back up at the tatzel. "Are we...are we going back now?" Truth be told, she was not looking forward to wading through all those reporters again.

With a chuckle, the ghoul was about to respond to the baku's inquiry when a rustling of leaves caused her to recall something. Ya know... It would take a minute or two of standing still with a blank expression until those rusty wheels in Levi's mind worked their way towards a thought. Aha! As if to visibly -ding!-, her tail wriggled in delight at her brilliance. Aye Xiu, whaddaya think 'bout hot springs? Like 'em any? A light smile was on her face as she began to move in a certain direction. Indeed the environment was familiar; they weren't too far off now. Without the worry of reporters knowing this newly opened area, Levi figured it would be a good way to end their training session. Hot springs were good for relaxing the muscles, she once read and RETAINED. Working up a sweat, they could use this relaxation to be prepared again for the following day when their trials would begin anew. The bonus to this? Levi had homework to complete for adventure class by bringing someone else to the springs. She was actually benefitting from this plan in more than one way! The tatzel felt an amount of pride worth a jar of candy corn from thinking of all of this.

Xiu had taken a few more steps when she realized that the tatzel had stopped moving. Puzzled, she turned around to face Levi, her expression confusion as she stared up at the taller ghoul. It looked like she had an idea!
For the time that it took Levi to figure out her plan, the baku had stood there patiently, head cocked to the side and eyes wide. And then, when the tatzel's tail wriggled, Xiu's own tail wagged excitedly in response. Ooh, ooh! What was it that Levi had in mind?!
The question caught her off guard, as the topic of hot springs seemed to come out of absolutely nowhere. "Hot springs? They're nice! I like them, and they are really quite refreshing, I think. But..." Her brows knit together as she hurried to trot after Levi, arms crossed over her chest, "But why do you ask?" To her knowledge, there weren't any hot springs around these parts. Unfortunately. The baku emitted a wistful little sigh at the memory of the hot springs that her family used to go to back when she lived at home. What she wouldn't do for a nice soak, especially after all that sparring.

Closer and closer they were heading. Levi's attention was on the baku, smiling in response when she replied. Excellent! Well thar just happens ta' be- A snapping twig a distance away caused a white ear on the tatzel's head to twitch. At first, Levi's worry was that it was an enemy so she quickly grabbed Xiu's arm and swung her onto her back, jumping into a tree. Taking the Horseman's stealth class, as well as the ninja's class, had helped Levi to quiet her sneaking just well enough to gather Xiu in what was, hopefully, a silent enough manner for whatever was lurking. Shh... ya'heard that? Whispering, the ghoul gently parted some leaves in the direction she'd heard the noise, hoping to find the source while remaining unseen. Sure enough, a pointed finger from Levi would reveal a figure in the distance to the petite ghoul beside her. They were on a thick branch overhead, crouching to keep a low profile, but there was still a good amount of distance still between where they were and were the reporters were. Just looks 'ta be tha' two of 'em.The two figures had microphones and following cameramen behind them, so it was easy enough to identify them. This was just proof of how far these reporters were willing to go to get those interviews. Dangit. Well- I tell ya'what. We'll meet back 'ere 'nother day. Looking through the brush of leaves, Levi then turned back to Xiu as she whispered. Don't reckon we wanna be givin' em anythin' all tha way down 'ere in th'woods anywho. Them fellers would all be flockin' in then. Fer now- think it's best we sneak back ta'tha dorms. She smiled to relieve the tension. We'll save tha'fun fer 'nother day! Can promise ya that. Like a pinky swear, Levi's tail coiled around the end of Xiu's, giving it a small shake. Whaddaya think? ...sounds good fer yew? Unless the baku wanted to talk to them after all...

Xiu had perked up, interested to hear what her big sister had to say when she was suddenly so rudely interrupted by a noise from beyond the trees. The baku stiffened immediately at the snapping twig, her heartbeat picking up. Shoot! Was that...? Could it be that an enemy...?! They were kind of sitting ducks out here all alone like this!
When she suddenly felt herself being swept up by the tatzel, she made no protest, immediately putting her trust in the other ghoul. Arms around Levi's neck, Xiu pressed her lips together tightly to stifle any sudden noises, her eyes squeezed shut as they leaped up into a tree.
She didn't dare to speak, so Levi's whisper only received a small, nervous nod in reply. Hesitantly, she poked her head forward, peering over the tatzel's shoulder and out from the parted leaves. Were they--oh. Oh, no, thank Jack. The baku visibly relaxed at the realization that they were just reporters, but her lips were drawn into a frown. "I can't believe that they'd come all the way out here," She whispered, "Though now that they're here...I guess it can't be helped."
As she had no desire to speak with any more reporters, Xiu was glad for Levi's suggestion. "Yes, let's head back! I guess we can come back when it's a bit safer." What a pity, though. She had been looking forward to whatever it was that her big sister had in mind. She supposed that it just had to wait.
She smiled at the tail coil and nodded enthusiastically. "Sounds good to me! But until then, let's get out of here before they spot us!"

Levi was able to successfully escape the reports in the woods that day with Xiu without being seen. Once the trials had ended and the way seemed clear for returning back to the spa area, Levi sent word to Xiu via her window. Waking up one morning, the baku would find a note tucked into her window. Levi took care of all her chores for the morning despite having woken up an hour later than her usual early rise. She had her reasons... The tatzel ghoul adjusted her scarf upward slightly while waiting by the tree she and Xiu had been in last time they were there. Her notes usually seemed to work on West, so she assumed the same would go for Xiu. Maybe the baku wouldn't take note of anything different...

The baku stared at the note with a puzzled expression on her face. She had no doubt that the message was from Levi, and for the most part, it was obvious what the tatzel was telling her, but...
...Shoe? That part confused her. Did Levi want Xiu...to bring a shoe with her? Just one shoe? Or a pair of shoes? Could she just wear her usual pair and head down to the designated meeting place, or was she supposed to bring a separate pair?
So many questions.
In the end, figuring that it would be best to be safe than sorry, Xiu had tucked an extra pair of shoes in her bag. It sat among her other objects which included a towel, hair ties, a water bottle, and everything else that she usually brought with her for a practice spar. At least, that was what she had assumed that they would be doing today--she had had no idea what her big sister had in mind.
She made it to the meeting place right on the dot. Noting that Levi was already waiting there, Xiu wagged her tail and rushed forward, enveloping the taller ghoul in a hug. "Good morning, jiejie! How are you--hmmm?" The baku suddenly frowned, her pink eyes growing round with confusion as she cocked her head to the side. Something about the tatzel was...different, today.

A chill went up Levi's spine when Xiu hugged her today. There was just something about the sensation of touch that had her a bit edgy. Coughing in correction, the ghoul forced herself to ease and return the hugging gesture. Aye, Xiu! Mornin'! Ya sleep well? Instinctively following, her tail brushed against the baku's, but it was a short greeting; again- touch. Xiu's eyes seemed to ask something of her, but the tatzel tried to reassure herself that nothing was there to be seen. There was no way for Xiu to know...anything. She would go on with their arrangements as if everything was just dandy. Got somethin' on ma'nose? kekeke. Must be tha'soil from tha'corn. She wiped at her nose while speaking, shifting so she faced where the mouth of the cave would be and beginning to walk towards it. Nothin' a little water won't wash'way. No, Levi wasn't embarrassed about the possible blemish of dirt; more like the fight she had the previous night with a certain demon boil. Just don't think about it, just don't think about it...Indeed, they would be heading to a place with water. Levi did her best to keep it a secret to the ghoul, only stopping at the opening of the cave to smile widely and watch for Xiu's expression. It's in'ere where we're goin'. Ya ready? Inside the strange sounds of a couple of mole rats might have been heard.

Something was off about Levi today, wasn't it? The baku's brows creased in worry as she stared up at the taller ghoul, her lips still spread into a frown. She couldn't pin what it was exactly, but the tatzel's actions--the hesitation at the hug and the brief touch of their tails--had her a little worried. She...she hadn't done anything to upset Levi, had she?
Her ears and tail drooped a little at the thought.
Of course, she was certain that she would have been told if she had done something to upset her big sister. Considering how she seemed to be addressing her rather normally, Xiu chalked up the strange behaviour to something else. However, rather than ask about it, she simply nodded her head and smiled. "Y-yes! I had a good night's sleep, thank you!"
It wasn't until Levi asked did Xiu realize that she must have been staring rather intently. Cheeks pink, she shook her head quickly, lifting a hand to rub at the back of her neck. "N-no, that's not it. I'm sorry, I must be imagining things." That must have been it. Levi wasn't acting that different, and she didn't really look different either.
Well, aside from that scarf, at least...
Their arrival at the cave was a good distraction. Xiu had absolutely no idea what they were here for, as evidenced by the look of curiosity that flickered in her eyes when they stopped by the opening. "It's...it's in here?" She couldn't really hear anything--aside from maybe the sound of some little creatures skittering about--and this just made her all the more eager to go inside. Turning her gaze back up to Levi, her tail waved slightly behind her. "I'm ready, jiejie! Can we go in?"

Nah, no apologizin', screecheart! kekeke ain't no need. Xiu had looked at her scarf but the tatzel took no notice of the baku's watchful eyes, trying to peer a bit into the cave. If yer ready! Sure! Leading Xiu in, the two would find the springs just as they were when she'd attended the course. The giant mole rats they tamed had sounded, but by the looks of it, they were nowhere to be seen. Perhaps they had a home in the stoney walls somewhere. Found out 'bout 'em inna'class! Springs fer dipping' in'! One'a tha'best things ta'do after a day'a tense trainin'. There were changing rooms and towels... and gnomes. This time, Levi didn't require the help of a gnome with a bathing suit for her to wear- she'd brought the last one and wore it just under her attire. This pool look good? Levi placed her bag on the edge of one of the springs. By'tha'looks of it, ain't nobody 'ere but us so-! Got tha'whole place ta'ourselves! She began to undress down to her bathing wear, stepping into the spring while folding her garments and laying them on top of her bag on the sidelines. Had she noticed the baku's wandering eyes on her scarf earlier, Levi might not have considered her next move. However, with the comfort of good company in a warm wet pool, she instinctively removed the scarf that had been hiding it without a second thought. There before the world, and Xiu, was the blemish on Levi's neck that refused to disappear. It contrasted in color with her skin, making it quite evident that this was not something she usually walked around with everyday. Ahh~ ... feels relaxin', eh?
Gets all them muscles loose as laces. She smiled, rolling her head over to look towards Xiu, making the mark that much more evident.

Xiu relaxed at the reassurance--maybe she had just been imagining things--but even if Levi had not provided that reassurance, the baku probably would have forgotten it anyways the moment they stepped into that cave. She took particular care to stick close to the tatzel as they wandered in, but when they arrived at the spring...
"Wow." Wide-eyed, Xiu took everything in with a look of stunned awe. Her tail, however, betrayed her excitement, wagging back and forth like a flag caught in a wind storm. This was amazing! She had had no idea that such a place even existed!
"Thank you for bringing me here," The ghoul blurted out after a few more moments of awestruck silence. When Levi began to undress, Xiu quickly turned to her own bag and sifted through the contents. She brought this bag around whenever she did anything athletic, so her swim suit should be--ah ha! The baku beamed with triumph as she pulled her dark red swimsuit out of the bag, scurrying to duck behind a rock and change. It was true that it was just her and Levi in here, but...but it was still a little bit embarrassing for her to strip naked in front of anyone, okay?
When she stepped out, fully changed, she slipped her clothing into her bag and moved over to where Levi was. It was at that moment--as she approached the tatzel--that she noticed an odd mark on the other ghoul's neck. It almost looked like a bruise of some kind, but that was an awfully strange place for a bruise, wasn't it? So Xiu simply stared.
And stared.
And stared some more.
It wasn't until she was spoken to did she snap out of her stupor. "W-wha--oh, yes!" She slowly slid into the water, cringing at first--eep, that was hot!--but slowly feeling herself relax as she grew adjusted to the temperature. However, after a few seconds of soaking, she found her curious mind wandering back to a particular bruise. Finally, she couldn't resist.
"Yes, this place is very relaxing. ...Also, jiejie, what is that mark on your neck?"
