There was a room. It was a very small room, with no signs on the door to indicate what normally occurred in the room. It had two chairs, one table, and a book: The Bible. There was no explanation, anywhere in the room, as to what the function of the room was.

But it was a perfect hiding place for Robert, because no one ever felt the need to enter the room. No one had burning desires to open the small, windowless door and see if there were people inside. No one even seemed to notice the door as they passed it, day and night, right beside the entrance to the cafeteria. The proximity to the cafeteria would have made one think that perhaps it was used by the kitchen staff, but there was nothing within the room to validate that theory.

It was just a room. And for now, it was his room. And his alone.

She would never find him here.

"See Jane run." He muttered to himself, as he read from a small, pocket version of a book he carried around. Old, thick black framed glasses sat on his nose. "See Jane run far." He squinted, and turned the page, an intensity on his face that looked as if he was reading Shakespearean literature.

"See Spot run with Jane. Psht."

It was then that the knight in shining armour - as a few of the kitchen staff were now nicknaming the golem - saw with his Not Quite Wizard Eyes the half-open room. Considering that the last five rooms with no signs on the door revealing its presence while containing exactly two chairs and one table had yielded a grant total of nothing clearly the sixth room with no signs on the door revealing its presence while containing exactly two chairs and one table would so very clearly be different.

"Ah!" Fortunately for knight in shining armour in question, he was apparently a golem of extremely moderate fortune. The second he spotted Robert he was all but blotting out the door, the light glinting off his golden armour plates at all the wrong angles while his cape fluttered dramatically behind him thanks to the smoke coming from the boiler rooms. "You must be the keeper they speak of, the one who archives a history of legacy over time. I have much to discuss with you."

Upon realizing that sitting on the chair was what humans would do, he happily occupied one of the chairs and simply waited with serenity.

Fortunately Robert was not to be permanently blinded by the abundance of accompanying lens flares.

Robert snapped his book shut when he heard the voice at the doorway, and his hand automatically reached for his glasses as he slid the tiny book in his pocket. But he only managed to push the glasses down halfway, staring over the rim at the vision that blocked the doorway, before the knight started saying.. words..

He thought long and hard about what this man was trying to say, before it actually sunk in.

"Oh."

Robert pushed his glasses back up, and he turned to face the man fully.

"I see."

Yes, he was ready to be the sage fountain of wisdom that this knight needed in order to fulfill his true quest and end his long, suffering journey. Wasn't he?

"You're here for the Bible."

No. No he wasn't.

"My interest in this Bible is only second to my profound and growing interest in your knowledge." Somehow, the golem was able to say it while being dead serious. "Fear not however, young book keeper, I promise I will not inhibit too much of your time."

More lens flare as he leaned forward eagerly. "I do wish however to hear from your mortals lips the events of this facility, it is both entertaining and engaging as often what goes between these tiny, complex walls evades even my vantage point. Tell me, young keeper, the legacy of your people."

The amount of vacant, empty staring that the man got from Robert could have won an Academy Award for best imitation of an inanimate object. With every additional syllable used to over-express his desires, Robert was more and more lost to the knight before him. He blinked, several times, and pursed his lips in thought. Robert's serious, thoughtful face was the kind of expression that should have created smoke exiting from his ears. But he tried. He tried very, very hard.

And then a lightbulb appeared over his head. Figuratively speaking, of course, because Robert did not have the magical power to create lightbulbs. He hardly even had the power to create the ideas that would metaphorically create lightbulbs.

But this time, he had one.

"You want to hear the s**t that goes on behind closed doors.." The sound of Robert getting it was obvious in the way he stretched out certain words conspiratorially. "I get you, I get you. Yeah, I can help you out there." He leaned in, as if to speak in a hushed voice. "Whatever I say stays between you and me though, okay bub?"

The figurative lens flare resulting from Robert's figurative ability to create not a quite metaphorical lightbulb would have been dazzling. You know, if it had been a full metaphorical lightbulb idea. Maybe it was just a slightly less dazzling figurative lens flare not created from a metaphorical lightbulb ideas.

Maybe the figurative lens flare would have been better than a 50mm radial figurative lens flare had it not been a single figurative lightbulb. Some people just didn't think in advance when creating figurative lightbulbs. Sigh.

Nonetheless, the golem leaned over a little closer. "Indeed, young keeper, speak to me of this," He waved his gloved hand, "The s**t that is going on behind closed doors. I appreciate your cooperation in this matter, and of course would not betray the sworn code between all keepers, to as knowledge tainted can lead to corrupt and impure thoughts."

"You talk funny." This was something Robert had figured out early on, but now, he was starting to enjoy it. He chuckled at all the silly words this guy added to his sentences to make them sound smart, and shook his head. "But okay. I trust you." The basis of this trust was completely unfounded. Much like everything Robert was about to say, for the next hour or so.

"Well first off, from what I hear, the two leads, you know, Allan and Simon? Yeah they're boning. Which is crazy except who the hell isn't boning a guy around here lately, am I right? Except me of course. STRAIGHT AS AN ARROW." He punctuated this with a salute that borderlined on nazi in nature, and awkwardly moved on. "So now there's this new trainee, down in the mist labs, and we're pretty sure he brought the herp in to our little love den. With the way these sons of bitches keep ******** each other, I would say Deus is going to be crawling with the herp in like, a year. Thank God I'm ******** married, you know what I'm saying? You know what I'm saying."

He nudged the man's shoulder as he spoke the last.

"As straight as a weighted arrow, of course," the golem suddenly corrected, veering entirely off tangent for a second. "An unweighted arrow would indeed not fly straight, and may cause this the herp infestation you speak of, though I believe if it is such an issue upon your facilities you should consider delivering this foul beast yourself with metal and sword and rid this island once and for all of such repugnance, as is your sworn duty and code. I do indeed, young keeper, know exactly what you address: we shall rise now, together, you and I, and rid your island of this crawling plague. With my arm and your knowledge of their ways, the enemy will fall in mere seconds!" He stood up, absolute justice gleaming in his eyes. "Let us ride to battle together!"
PostPosted: Fri Aug 24, 2012 4:22 am

"What. The ********. Are you even talking-" And the man was up, proclaiming the time to mount up their invisible steeds and ride headfirst into the thick of the fight, engaging in bloody battle with the dreaded herp.

Robert stayed right where he was, staring up at the man with a sense of confusion, awe, and perhaps just a little excitement.

A surge of ridiculous emotion swelled in him. This guy was really ******** crazy. Robert loved crazy. He jumped up to his feet, and then took it a step further, hopping up onto the lounge chair he'd been sitting in and hopping up and down.

"YEAH LET'S RIDE INTO BATTLE LET'S GO I'M READY WOOOOO!"

"Your spirit is well receieved, young keeper!" The golem heartily gave Robert an encouraging pat on the shoulder. "Yet haste is often leads to unprepared consequences. First, we must find between us a warrior, for you are a scribe and I a weapon. Only one born true of spirit and purely noble in heart will be able to wield as magnificent a weapon as I into battle!"

He seemed to believe himself wholeheartedly as he continued to elaborate. "Young keeper, do you know of such a warrior? One as magnificent as the instrument, the weapon, standing before your very eyes?"

Robert hopped off of the chair he was sitting on, and stood there for a moment in silence. The first thing that stunned him was that Excalibur didn't think he was a warrior. In truth, that was all Robert thought he was, but this guy was calling him a .. scribe. Which sounded like he scratched things for a living. All that mattered was that he was apparently not enough, and had to call others.

That was disappointing.

But then again, when he listened to the description the guy was giving, it all started to make sense. He wasn't just looking for a muscle man. He wanted someone born true of spirit and noble in heart. All that crazy good guy mumbo jumbo.

Someone who could fight, but was still pure hearted. Robert actually had to think about that one. And he did.

Long and hard.

...

Several long, boring minutes later, Robert's eyes stopped looking vacant as an idea punched him in the face. "I GOT IT!" Why hadn't he thought of this before? Maybe it was because he kept going through the list of tough guys, and that wasn't getting him anywhere.

Maybe, this time, it didn't need to be a tough guy.

"I hope you don't mind, I got two people who might be what you're looking for. And I'm pretty sure that they both don't have the he-" He paled as he realized he wasn't as sure about one, than the other. "Okay, I'm pretty sure one of them doesn't have the herp. The other one... I dunno. We can ask."

An answering text arrived a few minutes later.

Nio Love

k wer comn wats up wel i gues u can tel me son k

... It was a good thing worthiness wasn't judged by texting ability.

As promised, Madison knocked on the door in short order, Kouki right behind her; the weapon was cozied into her wake, almost shyly. "Oh, calm down - you know Robert, or you should," she chided him, with a smile. Inside, though, she felt a little guilty - being embodied had really given Kouki a hit in the self-confidence department.

The serpent-sword shuffled awkwardly. "We know, but... we have not spoken to him..."

"It'll be fine," she assured him, tousling his topknot before opening the door. "Hey, what's u- whoa, hey, who's this?" she added, looking curiously at the unexpected 'guest'. Surely that wasn't Robert's weapon - he didn't talk about his partner much, but Madison was pretty sure Robert's was female.

"Your wisdom is indeed fathomless, young book keeper, may the glory of the centuries bless us with more of your kind." Pleased, the golem waited patiently, literally standing very much like a statue until the first visitor entered the room. He moved, just slightly, the light making his golden armour plates shine just so. "Ah our first candidate, a noble female warrior, why such a picture of purity and poise. Tell me, young warrior-queen, are you the one who is worthy of wielding my true name so that we may ride to battle to vanquish the herp with a single, fell swoop?"

It took a minute for Jordan to figure out what Robert was asking, but he replied shortly.

Nio Love
Yeah, they pronounced me healthy when they let me out of the infirmary. Is something wrong?
