One of the most popular joints in the city, the White Candle Tavern (known to its fans as the WC) is a very reputable establishment on the second level of the city. The decor is clean and polished, with a French-styled interior this year. (Every year the tavern chooses a different theme; last year it was Korean and the year before Mayan) Several sturdy iron chandeliers keep the place well-lit and the service is usually quite good. Bar fights are discouraged, though they do occur rarely.

The WC's specialty is an elven ale dubbed "Black Cat" that will light a fire in your throat and settle into your stomach for the long run. They serve a wide selection of beers and wines and have one of the best whiskey and vodka selections in all of the elven realm. They also have a selection of non-alcoholic drinks including several varieties of non-alcoholic mead and various fruit concoctions.

The waiters and waitresses, of which there are at least seven working at any given time, are currently dressed in French costume with high wigs and overdone makeup. The bartender is dressed as King Louis XIV, though the majority of visitors don't know who that is. The poor bartender doesn't know either.

In addition to alcohol, the WC serves several basic meats and vegetables which you can basically have roasted or in a stew and that's it. But their roasting techniques are fantastic, particularly the corn.

Part of the WC's popularity is due to the fact that the owner's fairy is an Ice element who prepares ice cubes, a rare treat for anyone who doesn't possess freezing skills. The owner is currently Jovi Baen who comes by about once a week to make sure things are running smoothly. The cleaning staff are slaves, and about half of the waiters and waitresses. The other half and the bartender are mostly free humans, with one crossbreed cat/human waitress.

Things have gotten a bit more hectic with the festival on, but the staff is coping fairly well with the influx of people, though on busy nights there may be as much as a fifteen minute wait to be seated. (Several elves find this inacceptable, of course.) All species are welcome provided they have enough shiny coinage. The WC only accepts trade goods from merchants and traders registered with the tavern.

He showed her the water and she nodded. Taking it from him, she motioned for Alcion to follow her as she picked a back stall to sit in for privacy. Once sitting, she ackwardly sat sideways to fit in the stall, obviously it was not made for a Armadillo beastial, but she wasn't complaining. She took off her bag and quickly set up a mortar and pestle, a small beaker, burner and a vial. She took out some ingrediants that seemed like fine sand of several different colors and a few different type of leaves. Pouring the sands out and measuring it by eye, she poured some in and then ground it around. Making it even more fine as the marble pestle ground it against the bottom of the motar. The pestle had an odd shape to it, with closer inspection it seemed to be made in that odd shape to fit in the clawed hand of Spade perfectly. She made quick work and soon the stuff looked like a thick paste since the leaves had some mosture to them. She added a bit of the fresh water and mixed it a bit more till it was more watered down and less clinging to the mortar. Taking the burner, she placed the beaker on top of it and poured the contents inside. Lighting the burner, she let it work as she turned her attention to the honey she had gotten. Taking out a slim, small knife, she stirred the honey and smelled it. With a nod, she poured the honey into the thickening mixture in the small beaker. Taking the knife she used to pour the honey with, she stirred the mixture some and added some more water to make it less thick.

soon she was pouring a nice rich brown mixture into a vial and capped it. Handing it to Alcion, she smiled.

"That should be m'lord. I hope it is to Tessa's liking with tastem though I guarentee it will help. And if she needs anymore, I wouldn't mind making up another if she needs it."

Spade was quick to pack up, she used the rest of the water to wash out her supplies and poured it back into the glass she had gotten it out of. She could dump it outside. It wouldn't be to bad for the plants outside either.

"Where is Tessa anyway?"

Alcion watched each of her movements like a curious child, visibly a little amazed at all the different things he had never seem before, as he rarely headed out of his father's residence. Now this was something you'll never learn from a book, for sure.

He took the vial when it was handed to him, and clasped it securely on his belt.

"Thank you, ill be sure to tell her... This was incredibly kind of you, miss Spade, and I am extremely grateful. If there anything I could do for you, please ask..."

...But then the last question hit him.

Where was Tessa... ?

...In a lovely assortment of elven curses, Alcion got up.

"Tessa ! She is waiting for me at the area ! Im sorry, but I believe I really need to be going... She's probably already waiting for me..."

He tore a page from his sketchbook, and scribbled down an address.

"This is where Tessa and I are lodging for the festival... If you need anything, be sure to tell me, allright ?" He smiled. "Thank you, again, but i better get going !"

With a last wave, Alcion was out of the inn, wandering the streets to the area...

Spade accepted the address and watched him scamper out. She hoped he would be able to find her. And hope that she didn't take to long to make that for Tessa. But not atleast she knew the location of where Tessa was performing at night time. Maybe she would look into the inn herself, since she had been sleeping outside the town for the last few days. Making sure her stuff was clean, she dumped the liquid outside and returned the glass to the counter bar. She nodded her thanks and headed out the inn since she was done. She had been careful that even though she had been using fire, she had not damaged the table in any way.

She stepped out of the inn and looked about. Though her curiosity got the better of her. Alcion had mentioned the arena. She had nothing else to do, she picking a fruit of out her bag, she bit into it as she headed to the arena.

Miranda entered the tavern, her hand on Aleric's arm as if afraid he would run... or fall down. He was somewhat better from right after the fight, but not enough.

She headed for the servant nearest her, motioning airily. "We need a table. And food, please."

"Yes, mi'lady." The servant said, leading them to one of the tables in the back. Miranda moved, helping Aleric sit, even though the large bear didn't seem to need any help already.

"How are you feeling?" She asked as she slipped into the chair across from him.

"I don't think I should drink." He muttered in reply. Too much blood loss mixed with alcohol... It's not... an intelligent thing."

"Then we'll get you a mead." She replied calmly, looking him over with an appraising eye. "You've done well this last week."

He grunted, bringing his arm up to show the scars from the first fight. "I'm not a warrior."

"But you're close to becoming one." She replied, not disagreeing.

"If I don't get myself killed first." He replied, shrugging. "I came close today." He reached up, fingering the scar left from the burning.

"But you didn't. And that's all that matters." She replied, almost brisquely. "You're a strong fighter, good lines, good power. Stamina. You'll make it to the top."

He grinted, looking up as a waiter came by and ordering his meal. She followed suit, looking thoughtful.

Tessa made her way into the tavern, armed only with her lap harp and a smile. The human woman sidled up to the bar itself and presented a card indicating her employment to Telperinquar En'Lojist and quietly requested a Black Cat ale.

As the bartender scrutinized the card, she cast her glance around the room and tried to locate a good spot to set up and play. A grunt from the tender indicated he was begrudgingly accepting of her being all right to serve and she flashed him a smile as she tucked the card back into a hidden pocket in her blouse sleeve. As he set a mug of ale before her, she thanked him before slipping into the crowd.

She found a table that was free of patrons save for one or two men slowly sipping from their mugs. She climbed to sit on the tabletop at the opposite end from them, and set her ale down to settle the harp in her lap.

"Would anyone like some entertainment this night, in the form of song?" she called out.

"Please, play for us, young bard." Miranda called, smiling slightly. She had dragged the bear in for yet another night of food, hoping he would be revived for a fight the next day. "My friend here needs to have his spirits lifted."

Aleric grunted, taking a drink of fruit juice before glancing at the bard Miranda was speaking to. He gave a slight smile. "I would appreciate it." He said softly.

Tessa chuckled. "Well for as fine a gladiator as yon Aleric, I shall not refuse. A little something to lighten the spirits then." The bard had a twinkle in her jade eyes and she began strumming the notes of a sea shanty on the harp.

There was a young sailor
Who looked through the glass,
Spied a fair mermaid
With scales on her...

...island

Where seagulls
Fly over their nests.
She combed the long hair
That hung over her...

...shoulders

And caused her
To tickle and itch.
The sailor cried out
"There's a beautiful...

...mermaid,

A-sitting out
There on the rocks."
The crew come a-runnin
A-grabbing their...

...glasses

And crowded four deep
To the rail,
All eager to share
In this fine piece of...

...news

Which the captain soon
Heard from the watch.
He tied down the wheel
And he reached for his...

...crackers

And cheese which
He kept near the door,
In case he might someday
Encounter a...

...mermaid.

He knew he must
Use all his wits.
Crying "Throw out a line.
We'll lasso her...

...flippers

And then we will
Certainly find
If mermaids are better
Before or be...

...brave

My good fellows."
The captain then said.
"With fortune we'll break
Through her mermaiden...

... head-ing

to starboard
They tacked with dispatch.
Caught that fair mermaid
Just under her...

...elbows

And hustled her
Down below decks.
Each took a turn
At her feminine...

...setting

Her free at the end
Of the farce,
She splashed in the waves,
Falling flat on her...

...after-while one man
Noticed some scabs,
Soon they broke out with the pox
And the...

...scratching

With fury,
Cursing with spleen.
This song may be dull
But it's certainly clean.

Miranda smirked, watching as Aleric choked on his drink. "What a fascinating song." She said, digging through her things and tossing the bard a piece of gold. "I'm sure he appreciated it."

"I'll never look at a mermaid the same again." Was all Aleric said, his tone dry. "I picked up some cash from the fights, can I treat you to a drink?" He asked, standing.

Miranda said nothing, but she inwardly fumed at being abandoned so easily. Mostly she worried that if he wore himself out on... diversion... he might not have as much energy as he should in a fight.

Tessa chuckled and bowed to Miranda and the ursine. "Alas, I cannot claim credit for so witty a tune. Tis an old sea shanty I picked up on a journey in my youth, and it always made me laugh and lifted the spirits."

The bard gracefully accepted the coin. "I thank you for your generosity, Milady, it is most kind of you." She straighted again at Aleric's offer. "I am glad to see you well, my friend, after that sincere lack of sportsmanship on the part of that cat you fought. I would be honored to share a drink with an arena winner."

He nodded, motioning towards one of the more quiet tables, then motioning to the bar for two drinks. When he had gotten the drinks he headed for the table, placing them down and waiting for her to sit.

"I'll be fighting again tomorrow." He said as he pulled her chair out for her. He wasn't trying to flirt, actually, just knew it was considered good manners.

The woman settled into the chair, carefully setting the harp on the tabletop, ensuring she wasn't setting it in anything sticky first.

"So soon? Well I wish you luck. I am not certain if Lord Alcion and I will be able to get a box again. I had to pull a few strings to get access to the last one. But we shall see."

She glanced back at Miranda curiously before turning her attention back to Aleric. "Is that your patron?" she queried.

Aleric nodded. "She is." There was a tiny hesitation before he went on. "She's... good at what she does." And it was true. She evaluated warriors as well as he did and in half the time. It was almost scary. But he wasn't sure how much he liked her cold blooded criticism.

"How are you enjoying the festival?" He asked, taking a drink.

Miranda had already found a new group to talk with, some of the younger males from the betting boxes. She smirked slightly, looking them over for a second. Too young, too young... that one preferred males... not enough stamina... Hmm.... Was that a cross dresser? How amusing!

"I'd tell you, boys, but a lady never reveals her... secrets." She finally said, smirking directly at the crossdresser. This was almost as entertaining as winning!

"What if we bought you a drink?"

"I won't stop you from trying."

Tessa smiled and she curled her hands around her ale mug. "It's been quite enlightening in many respects, I think. And it has been a good opportunity for performing to a varied crowd. Aftering being in the En'Lojist entourage for so long, I'd lost some perspective on the larger world out there. I've learned a lot at the festival, I think. About both the world and my place in it."

She sipped from the mug before regarding the fighter with a curious expression. "What about you? Are you enjoying yourself? Mind you I find it odd to be asking that question to someone I recently saw fighting a deadly battle in the arena." She winked.

He shrugged. "Being a fighter comes with risks." He replied, watching her for a second. What could he say? Sure, the fighting is fine, but I'm a little pissed that the reason I came here in the first place isn't working out? That would consist of whining.

"I am... learning as well." Was what he settled for. "And gaining a few more scars." His tone said it wasn't that bad of a thing. A fighter with no scars was a questionable creature. Because no matter how good one got, there was always the training it took to get there.
