The fighting was over and the cleaning of Trine had begun. More refugees from Benden and Malvren filtered in over the following days and even now they still had a dragon or more showing up a day with non-rider refugees or straggling in after being injured and needing to hide away from the weyrs.

The push on the beach had been successful in ending the fighting in that part of Trine, but it had taken days longer to clear the whole weyr. Malvren, it seemed, still hadn't finished their battling though all who came said the weyr was lost, hence their steady influx of dragons and other refugees. N'mol offered his services wherever he could, and had been lucky to be one of the first to Trine; D'lin had offered to have N'mol be his new bunkmate until the weyr was ready to rebuild lost weyrs and add to their number for the new riders who now had to call Trine home, even temporarily.

However, the one thing he didn't neglect was visiting his closest friend. Kindra had reached the point where she had simply left the infirmary on her own and was threatening to start traveling around again, despite her leg. N'mol had spoken to the healers and come to a consensus with them that with a crutch, she might be permitted to move around. As long as Kindra got what she wanted, N'mol thought she might be amenable, especially if he was the one presenting the idea to her.

He stopped at Narisa's weyr where Kindra was staying and nodded up at Suunath, surprised that Tyeth wasn't with her for once. He had gone to eat while N'mol was going off on his task, claiming he would meet his rider again once it was done.

N'mol knocked on the door. "Kindra, it's N'mol. Are you up?"

Kindra was steeling herself to return to the Infirmary, she was planning on doing the rounds and checking who was injured and from Benden, trying to take stock of those people they had, Trine was spread out, it was easy to miss their own riders among Trine and Malvren refugees. She groaned and sat heavily on the bed, running her hands through her hair with a sigh. She was bunking with Narisa, Suunath with Cephieth, she didn't mind the woman but it was a far cry from the privacy of her stone walls and her own things. Malvren was about to fall, from the trickle of Malvren Dragons and Weyrfolk fleeing the fighting and the carnage. She'd seen it here, but they were lucky, less places for Whers to hide, more places for them to corral the traitors and wipe them out.

She heard the knock on the door and was about to get up to open it, gritting her teeth against the report of scuffling between Her riders and Trines, others finding it hard to adjust and share their Weyrs, food and homes with refugees. When she heard N'mol's voice she let out a whoosh of breath in relief "Come in N'mol" she said, not bothering to get up, her leg ached a lot and if she walked about anywhere she had a terrible limp, almost to the point of collapse if she pushed herself but she didn't want to be seen as weak, who knows who could take advantage of it.

"It is alright Mine, no one thinks you are weak, no one would dare" she said, a snarl in her voice. She dipped her head to N'mol when the man had nodded, she liked Tyeth's and he made Kindra feel better when she was sad and that was good, she was glad he was here since they'd both been busy they hadn't been able to see each other much lately, It was different for the dragons, there not being a great deal they could do with people's issues. "Perhaps i will go and join Tyeth, he is eating" she said, her tone amused and just a little smug as she took off, the sand and dusts flying a little as she lifted off and went to find Tyeth.

N'mol entered with the weyr as Suunath took off and quickly closed the door to keep out the dust kicked up by her take off. Kindra was still sitting, but it didn't look like she had intended to stay that way. N'mol eyed her for a moment, then went over, snagging a chair on his way and setting it in front of her so that he would have a seat as well.

He leaned the crutch against the wall and turned his attention back to Kindra. "How's your leg? You haven't been staying off of it." He knew that for fact. It was, after all, part of why he was here. "I've told you people won't judge you if you need time to heal."

He knew why Kindra did it. She had to show her face. Thanks to her upbringing his friend always had a strong sense of her responsibility as a Goldrider and with Isley and Gold Kheth missing she took that even more seriously. Kindra still had a tendency to sometimes be confident enough to say the wrong thing, however, and N'mol liked to be there to smooth things over. She was Benden's last Goldrider, as far as he was concerned, and that meant the riders of Benden had a responsibility to her. N'mol, of course, had other reasons (Tyeth and Suunath and his own friendship with Kindra), but as a Bronzerider, a Wingleader, N'mol had a responsibility to Benden and to his remaining potential Weyrwoman. That W'lin hadn't come to Trine also meant it was up to the remaining two Bronzes who had shown up to take over those roles. And K'en and Stromath didn't seem all that interested in leading the way N'mol and Tyeth were.

By placing the chair in front of her like that N'mol practically trapped her in place, she couldn't get up without good reason since he was right there, inside she seethed a little at being forced to stay seated when what she wanted to do was pace her frustration away.. but she couldn't even sharding do THAT with the stupid wound in her leg... Damn that wher.. Damn her rotten handler too... Kindra hoped the woman got eaten by a sharding wild Feline or something, without her Wher to protect her, though that was probably too much to hope for. She was glad Suunath had crushed the life out of the creature, even though she'd been unconscious at the time.

"My leg is doing fine...." she grumped, sure it wasn't infected and it was healing .. ok but she hated being so..... stuck "So you say N'mol but it's not like i can jsut.. stop being Benden's Queenrider.. if they can't look to me for strength.. if i break down, admit i'm not strong enough... what happens then?" she snapped, sighing and putting her face in her hands. Shards.. sometimes she felt like she wasn't strong enough... despite the reassurance from Suunath.. but she HAD to be, even if sometimes she didn't feel up to it.. she couldn't let her riders down... her Weyr down... but shells.. it was hard sometimes, it was alright for N'mol ... he was a Bronzerider sure but anyone could have been figurehead for the men of the Weyr... she was... well she was THE figurehead for the Benden riders she couldn't allow herself to show weakness, even if she had N'mol's support.

N'mol considered her words, but he had known this was part of the problem from the start.

"You don't have to say you aren't strong. Being injured doesn't make you weak, it makes you the victim of an unfortunate battle. I understand you want to prove yourself worthy of your position, Kindra, but you need to worry about yourself, too. You'll be worse off if you break it again or walk around on it and cause it to heal crookedly so that you have to deal with a limp or pain for the rest of your life."

N'mol spoke to her directly. He never treated her like a child or tried to talk down to her, even when she was being ridiculous. It was better to speak to Kindra head-on most of the time. And when that wasn't the right move, it was best to be exceedingly subtle about turning her opinion around.

Kindra sighed, why did N'mol have to always be so right all the damn time... it made it hard to argue with him... especially when he was sitting there, looking at her like that. "N'mol... what else can i do... you know they'll always look to me... or another Gold.. if we had another Benden Gold here... " for the first time she actually missed Isley, she knew Suunath had felt slightly lost about being alone... without her twin and she'd tried to comfort her dragon but she knew the loss hurt Suunath a lot

She looked up, rubbing her face a little and looked at him. "I can't just sit idle N'mol.. you know that as well as i do... i just... i NEED to do something, i can't just sit in here til my shaffing leg heals ok" she said with more attitude than she'd meant, she was just frustrated.

"With all of your visits lately, I didn't think you would be able to," N'mol admitted. "So I talked it over with the healers."

He glanced at the crutch then looked back to her and tipped his head at it. "That's for you. If you're going to go out, then you're at least going to stay off of your leg."

N'mol knew the healers hoped that after a day or two of struggling around on the crutch, Kindra would give up and conduct her business from her shared weyr. N'mol knew better. Kindra would use it to its full advantage, but it was crazy to think anyone-- even him, even Suunath-- could stop her if she was determined to go. Besides that, it might do Benden good to see that although Kindra could be difficult, she cared for her riders and her weyr enough to struggle around. People might make snide comments about it, attribute other reasons, but N'mol would quietly run interference and make sure as many riders as possible believed that it was because she did care for them. Kestrel, not speaking ill of the dead aside, hadn't been much easier. With time, Kindra would become another Kestrel, only with a happier ending.

"It's not going to be easy to adjust to, but it will keep the pressure off of the break and ensure that while you're seeing to our people you're not doing more damage to yourself, too. Promise me that if you're going to go out there you'll use it, Kindra."

N'mol's stared at her, unwilling to let her lie or avoid making the promise. His blue eyes usually captivated people with the competency and warmth that gave them confidence. Now it was inflexibility with which they captured her and it showed her that he was going to bend his not inconsiderable will to this. He didn't expect her to fight much, but if she did, he would push back.

Kindra sighed and looked up and over at the crutch he'd brought in. She groaned and flopped back onto the bed behind her so that her legs were bent but the rest of her was laying flat. She rubbed her face and sighed again. She got up again and looked at N'mol. "Fine... fine... I'll use the sharding thing..." she said, knowing she'd be on it as much as she possibly could. She would get about again and she would make sure she showed her face, she'd hurt her leg sure but there were more things to do than physical labour. She understood some of the strain that Narisa was possibly going through, she'd been the only Goldrider around for some time. Sure Kindra had Isley but the same as Narisa, neither of the twin's riders had an older Weyrwoman, much like Narisa had to deal with.

She gave a defeated huff at N'mol. She just didn't have the energy for fighting today, she was tired from trying to get around and her leg hurt. "I.... thank you N'mol... i'm glad at least one person here actually.... get's it" she said softly. "Everyone just assumes we're unbreakable... even the murders are fading... have been forgotten in light of the takeovers" she muttered. "I..i don't want to let them down N'mol"

N'mol watched as Kindra adjusted (relatively quickly) to the idea of being forced to hobble around on a crutch rather than without one and accepted her huff as promise enough. Of course, should she decide to renege on that promise, N'mol would just go to further lengths to ensure her cooperation. The sudden vulnerability Kindra showed during her explanation flipped the switch in N'mol's mind from 'instruct' to 'encourage/console' and he moved from his place in the chair to the bed beside her.

He reached out and tipped her chin back up so she would meet his eyes head on (and if he knew Kindra, she wouldn't back down from something like that). "You aren't going to let anyone down. Everyone knows that Benden has been struggling through the most difficult set of circumstances any Weyr has had to suffer through. They know you're learning as you go. But anyone who meets you knows you're a strong Weyrwoman already, even if Suunath hasn't Risen yet. Give our riders and the riders of the other Weyrs some credit; the wherhandlers didn't accept how the world works, but the riders at least understand."

He dropped his hand from her face and smiled at her, turning on some of that charm he often aimed at the population at large. "I think your visits to the infirmary are already showing them that you're not just a Weyrwoman capable of giving orders, but one who cares about her people and their concerns." It also showed them that Kindra was not as stuck up as she often appeared at first glance. N'mol thought she had made significant strides in the last few Turns, but overhearing the comments of some older riders often gave him cause to wonder if it was enough in the eyes of those who hadn't known her in her Weyrling days. Who didn't know her as well as N'mol knew her.

We will protect them. Tyeth's sudden input surprised N'mol. He wasn't aware that his Bronze had been paying attention to anything other than Suunath. However, the words designed to assure N'mol that things would work out as he and Tyeth wanted (an ending Tyeth always foresaw, and generally made possible) made N'mol suddenly uncomfortable instead. He shook the feeling off, but decided that he'd said all he needed to say. N'mol stood, his expression as friendly as it had been before Tyeth's comment (and whatever he had been getting at with that).

"Tell Narisa I said hello when she gets back. Don't forget your crutch," he reminded her, pointing at it.

When N'mol lifted her chin, she saw the almost, challenge in his eyes for her to look at him, well, she didn't drop her eyes from anyone.. well ... maybe... "Maybe i already have N'mol.... we're here, at Trine and not at home" she argued weakly, knowing she didn't really have one, N'mol was right, as he usually was and as much as Kindra liked to argue... knowing he was right made it DAMN hard to argue with him.

Her lips went white as she tightened them at his mention of Suunath not having risen yet. "thankfully... otherwise we might have been stuck at the mercy of whers if she had been on the hatching sands" she said, shuddering at the thought of it. She was worried about Suunath actually, there were a lot of Large bronzes, even very large browns and Suunath, wasn't exaclty big, the Gold had reassured her that everything would be fine in the end but Kindra still thought about it, though when Suunath was sleeping.

She was glad it had been N'mol dropping the crutch to her, she'd probably have declined using it out of sheer stubborn-ness otherwise. "You're going already?" she asked him when he asked her to say hello to Narisa.

"I have to hunt D'lin down and then see about getting an accurate head count for those of us here. People may still be coming in, but I think the majority of the refugees we'll be getting have arrived. And there are other things that need to be done before I go back to helping the Trine riders clear out the debris."

N'mol grinned at her. "Don't worry. I'll see you again soon. You keep the riders trapped in the infirmary company. After all, even if the Benden riders are sleeping, I'm sure those from Trine and even Malvren will be grateful for a bit of distraction."

That might not be true of all of the riders in the infirmary, but N'mol needed to make a general point. In the end, the cooperation between the Weyrs was going to determine who lived and who died-- in the sense of being who they always had been as opposed to become more exiled than they were or a few more added bodies to a different Weyr. Showing the other Weyrs that Benden was capable of being trusted could only be a good thing.

Kindra nooded and gave a small sigh, "Do you have to go NOW N'mol? ... i know you've been doing a lot" she said with a frown "Turn around... your shoulders must be tense, i can give them a rub if you like" she offered, not really being able to do much for him. He was working hard and she was stuck with an injured leg, barely being able to get around, granted she was determined and stubborn and did venture about but now she had the crutch, she could do what she wanted without worrying N'mol or the healers.

N'mol shook his head slightly, looking amused. If he didn't know better, he would think Kindra was looking for excuses not to lose his company. He knew it wasn't the games she used to play with boys (she'd continued those even after she got to Benden, before Suunath and her training had taken up most of Kindra's time), because he and Kindra had sorted out any of those issues in the awkward time after they had slept together.

"I can't, Kindra. I have to go. Maybe I'll take you up on that later, if we aren't both busy with our duties. Besides, you'll be out of this weyr the moment I'm gone and you know it." His grin widened, blue eyes laughing. "I'll see you soon."

He left the hut to avoid any further protestations. Tyeth was still with Suunath, N'mol was sure, so he left Tyeth to his 'hunting' and headed back toward the main body of the Weyr on foot.
