Malodore kept Riley's hand in its own, their fingers entwined as they walked towards the monster dormitories. The sight of the building alone was enough to make Malodore start fretting internally. It didn't want to not find Jericho. But maybe the dragon was back, and would be just fine...

... or maybe not. It hated not knowing, almost as much as it might hate finding the dragon definitively absent. "It won't take long, I suppose - if he's there. If not..." It sighed. "Well. It is much harder to prove a negative."

Something odd settled over Riley as she walked, hand in hand, with the plague doctor. It felt like a sense of deja vu, and she accepted that easily. Of course they must have walked hand in hand through the school before. It made perfect sense. She had no recollection of it, but it felt right, and it felt.. warm.

It felt hazy, and comfortable.

It felt.. good.

She lost track of where they were going and what they were doing. She lost focus. She just wandered, letting Malodore lead her anywhere it wanted to, so long as it never let go. That was easy enough. She didn't need to think, she just followed.

That, as she thought of it, was almost unsettling.

If he's not there, we'll see if his room holds any indication of why. She squeezed the plague doctor's hand. And then we'll figure it out together.

"Si, si... I don't know what I did without you, truly," it said, quietly. Well, it did know - it involved a lot more tears, for one thing, and a bit more screaming. But there was no point in making plans now. Not until they knew for sure, or as close as they could get.

It led her up into the dorms, heading for Jericho's room. The plague doctor's pace visibly slowed as they drew near to the dragon's chamber, its hooves dragging a bit. Which was stupid. Still, it peeked around the corner with trepidation before sighing and walking up to the door.

"There are notes, still. Surely he would have removed them if he were there..."
PostPosted: Mon Aug 20, 2012 9:36 pm

The notes were a very solid indication that they would not find Jericho in the dorm. Riley turned to look at Malodore, her brow furrowed in sadness, before grabbing the doorknob and turning it to test the door. It was unlocked, and she pushed it easily open.

Check his closet, first. If his clothes are gone, we'll know he left of his own choice, and we shouldn't worry. If he needed the time..

She let the sentence hang, and finally let Malodore's hand go. Her destination was the lava pits, which caught and held her attention. She moved slowly towards it, her head tilting slightly. She felt.. something. Familiar, perhaps? It taunted her.

One of the notes fluttered to the ground; Malodore picked it up, squinted at it, then stuck it back on the door with a sharp stab of one claw, driving paper into wood. "His closet?" it asked, uncertainly, stepping inside. The lava pit bubbled, and the plague doctor automatically scooted away from it, plastering itself to the back wall furthest away. It sincerely hoped the closet wasn't behind the lava pit...

While Malodore moved away, Riley only moved closer, slowly stepping towards the pit until she was at the edge. The heat stung at her eyes, but she stared down at it regardless. She looked for something in the bubbles as they popped up out of the lava, as if their shining surfaces could hold images of the past. There was something there.. almost..

.. His closet. She whispered, turning away when she heard Malodore's voice. Yes, one of those doors over near you there. Are there any clothes in it?

The heat burned at her skin, as if calling to her. But she wasn't stupid enough to actually get in it. Just stare.

Malodore's feathers rasped against each other as it inched over towards the doors she'd indicated, only to pause when it put a hand on the door. Wait... how did she know...?

Hm.

It slid the door open carefully, its stomach twisting a bit as it realized the closet was full. "Well-stocked, I'm afraid," it said, trying to sound less panicked than it felt. Though really a good chunk of it was the lava pit's presence.

The answer disturbed her. Then he's not away on a trip. She murmured the obvious conclusion, pulling away forcefully from the tug of the lava pits and moving instead to his bed. Undone, and a little messy, but there was nothing there to indicate a struggle. There was the small pile of treasure, but it took looked relatively undisturbed. He certainly wasn't robbed.

She reached out to slide her fingers into the treasure, fingers brushing against gold coins and jewels, but she paused at the corner of paper sticking out from underneath a plushie. She snatched the corner and pulled it out quickly, as the plushie fell from the disturbance.

It looks like we may not have been the first here. She flicked the envelope open, heedless of any issues with privacy. Lizzy. She read the signature first, but then her eyes lifted up to read the rest of the letter, and her color paled. She fell, slowly, back onto the treasure.

Malodore. She whispered. Nothing more.

When it 'heard' its name, it turned, biting back a startled exclamation at her sudden pallor. "What is it, mia cara?" it called, hurrying towards her, then stopping and veering sharply towards the nearest wall. It was visibly agitated by the presence of the lava pit, but kept moving forward nevertheless, with a certain grim determination. "A note? From him?"

... It was not from him.

Malodore sank to the ground, stunned. For a moment it sat in a puddle of its own robes - and then, quite suddenly, it raised one clenched fist high and slammed it into the ground. "Dannazione!" Slam. "Dannazione al paradiso!" Wham.

"L'ho fallito..." Slowly, the fist descended once more, but it slowed before impact; Malodore pulled its arms close, hugging itself as it shook, wings rasping dissonantly. "Non di nuovo, non ancora... ho giurato un voto!!"

Its shout rang against the walls, and it fell silent.

Riley understood what was happening to her, now. She was in shock, and it caused her to remain unmoving, sitting on the treasure pile, staring at the spot where the letter was before Malodore took it. She heard it cursing, and breaking, right in front of her, and she longed to reach out and comfort it. But for a long moment, she couldn't.

What she didn't understand was why.

She was crippled, and it was an overwhelming feeling. Over this boil. Wasn't it? It was Jericho's fate, that made her feel this way. Wasn't it?

Wasn't it?

She growled, and clawed her way back, until her sensibility and control returned to her. She struggled to move to Malodore's side, gathering it up in her arms and pulling it close.

Questo non è colpa tua. Per favore, il mio cuore, questo non è colpa tua. Vi è un solo la colpa qui.

Her eyes darkened and slit angrily. The hunters.

If Malodore noticed the span of time between its initial breakdown and when Riley came to its side, the plague doctor did not mention it - instead, it clung to her when she was near enough to hold, taking comfort in her presence. "We can get him back," it swore, its voice shaky. "Just as what happened with you - we just have to find him..."

Its voice trailed off. Jericho had last been seen on the Island of the Hunters - and in the form of fog, rather than a statue. Unless he had solidified at a later time? But they had no way of knowing. It ground its beak in frustration. "How do we get to him? To them? I know how to find individual Hunters, but the one who opened the way to the Island was..."

It shook its head. "Medea. The Horseman High Priestess. Ah, mia cara, I do not... I do not trust her. Her gifts are too strange, her purpose too clouded. She asked much to take us to the Island in the first place; I did not take her gift, and was bound..." The memories of the humans trapped and dying, tormented in the Famine Lair also echoed in its mind, available to Riley for the first time.

Its feelings were conflicted. It had gladly destroyed Hunters, yes, and would do so again. And yet it could not help but feel that while their actions were misguided at best, they were not without provocation. Not after what it had seen below Famine.

Riley's heart surged with pride when Malodore first spoke. It was shaky, but it was hope, and she clung to it just as desperately as it did. The only true answer was to try, and it was willing - it was not going to give up. She rested her forehead on Malodore's mask, and a tiny, choked sound left her.

The fountain of knowledge it then opened up to her stilled her into silence, and she opened her eyes widely as she watched it's memories.

Medea. She tasted the word, and connected it to all Malodore gave her. Do you think she is really the only one who can help us get to the island? She wasn't entirely against going to Medea herself, but it was a last resort.

More importantly, I don't think we should do this alone. Her own dark hope began to surge. We are not the only ones who care about Jericho. Perhaps it's time we made a stand. The Horsemen have made theirs..

She pulled away and looked at the letter. Maybe it's time we made ours.

"She might be," it said, with a sigh. "But I do not doubt she would request a price in return... I would imagine she would levy it most on you, for you are far more valuable than I."

At her speaking of stands, it laughed, though there was no joy in the sound. "I have not proven very effective at such things, mia cara. Not after losing you once, and now Jericho as well... perhaps Ashford is also there, fog and stone, and I have three failures to my name instead of only two. But whatever you choose to do, I shall support it, and you," it added, drawing itself up.

It might be downtrodden, but it could be strong for her.

More.. valuable.

Riley pulled away, holding Malodore firmly by the arms, so that it was forced to look straight at her.

Did I hear you correctly? Did you just dare to imply that you are not the most precious, brilliant, and perfect creature that has ever stepped food on this unworthy ground? There was a dangerous growl in her voice. I will not tolerate that blasphemy, Malodore.

She pulled it back up close, but her hold on it was tight, as if she was trying to restrain herself. I will not tolerate it.

It flinched away from her gaze for a moment, then stilled, looking back at her. When she was done, it looked... well, much the same as always, really. But it emanated sheepishness. "I... grazie, mia cara," it sighed, heavily. "So you see some of the wounds this has left on me. I had never before lost a... well, you were and are far more than this, but you were also my patient, in the matter of Insanity. So... I had never lost a patient before..."

Its wings swept around them both, as if Malodore was trying to hug her with as many limbs as it possibly could. "I am a fool in one way, though, and you cannot deny this single truth: in setting myself against an impossible, poorly understood opponent as my nemesis." Meaning the Insanity, of course. It was rather like a small minipet challenging a train.
