She'd been staying in Gloryheart Meadow, near the Queen's castle since her mother had left in search of a Glory to join, but she was restless. The life of ease and tranquility was not what she was suited to. She needed something to challenge her, and living in the meadow was anything but challenging. So she decided to leave, and look for her own Glory that might be willing to accept her into it.

She hadn't planned on flying so high, but the air currents were just too wonderful, and she was having so much fun. She was very near the Icefury Mountains, and she had heard that there was at least one Glory living there, so she was hoping to locate it, and see if she might be accepted into their group. She had no idea what she would do once she got there, but it had to be more exciting living on the mountain slopes than it was in the meadow. Another strong current of air caught her by surprise, and the next thing she knew, she was plummeting to the ground. Unable to regain control of her flight, she watched in horror as the rocks of the mountainside came into view, and grew larger as she descended. She managed to slow her descent at the last possible moment, but she still hit the rocky ground hard. Hard enough that she passed out from the impact.

Eclipse had been on patrol since before the sun rose that morning. The night had been clear, and he had enjoyed starring up at the many stars in the night sky. His parents had given him his name precisely because he had been born during a lunar eclipse, so he had a certain affinity for the nightsky, and the lights in it. He had stopped on the mountainside to watch the sun rise in the East. It's rays cast down upon the snowy tops of the mountains, causing the snow and ice to glitter like diamonds in the morning light. This was when he was most at peace; out here alone on the mountain. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy the other members of the Glory, but he prized his time alone. It was his Glory's duty to guard against any enemy that might attempt to cross over the Icefury into their safe haven. None had yet been discovered, and he intended to make sure that none ever succeeded.

The sun had risen higher into the sky, and his duty was coming to an end. Soon he would find himself back with his Glory, a welcome rest his reward for a job well done. He turned to retrace his steps down the mountain when something caught his attention out of the corner of his eye. He glanced upward into the sky and caught sight of the unicorn falling, uncontrollably to the ground. "Pull up!" he yelled, but he knew it couldn't hear him. He instinctively began clamoring over the rocky ground, intent on reaching the unicorn. He watched in horror as its body recovered too late to stop it from crashing to the ground. He raced as fast as he could, unconcerned with his own footing on the mountainside, to reach the spot where it fell. Coming over a rise, he saw her. Her body appeared to be intact, but her wings were outstretched and it was clear that one of them had been damaged. How badly he couldn't tell yet. He approached her and could see that she was breathing, but she was not moving at all. He lowered his head to hers and saw that her eyes were closed; a gash on her forehead, sending blood down the side of her face, onto the rocks beneath her. She needed help that he could not give her, so he did what no other unicorn in his Glory had done since they had started patrolling the Icefury.

Around his neck hung a golden horn. A unicorn horn, brought here by the leader of his Glory, Lord Baldur, when he had crossed over. Legend had it that the horn was his fathers, and as he lay dying from battle wounds, he instructed his son to take his horn, and use it for the good of their kind. Now it was carried by the unicorn on patrol, and was only to be blown in a case of dire emergency. Up until now, the dire emergency was considered to be an incursion over the mountains, but Eclipse saw the broken body of this beautiful mare before him, and considered this to be a dire emergency. He took the horn in his mouth and raising his head high into the air, he blew three sharp notes, waited a few moments and blew them again. He would continue doing so until help arrived.

She could hear a horn blowing. It sounded like it was inside her head, and it would sound, then stop, then sound, then stop. After a while of this, she thought she was going mad. It wasn't until her body began to register the pain she was in, that she regained consciousness. She tried to open her eyes, but pain exploded in her head. She knew she was alive, and lying on the rocky hillside. She knew now that the sound she had heard was not her imagination, and that someone was blowing a horn right above her.

She tried to speak, wanting desperately to tell whoever it was, to please stop, but she could not get her mouth to work. All that came out was a pitiful whinny of sorts. She sounded like a wounded filly she thought to herself, but the noise did have the added benefit of catching the attention of whoever was blowing the horn, for the noise stopped.

Eclipse heard the downed mare whinny and he stopped blowing on the horn. He was actually glad for the break, as his lips were becoming dry and sore. He lowered his head down to hers once again, but her eyes were still closed. "Can you hear me?" he asked. He could see her mouth moving, but she didn't seem able to speak. "It's alright. Don't try to speak. I can see that you can hear me. You have a very bad cut over your eyes, and one of your wings is badly damaged. My name is Eclipse, and I've been calling for help from my Glory since I found you. I'm sure someone will be here soon to help. I can't get you down off the mountain on my own, and it doesn't appear that you are going to be able to make it down by yourself. Just stay still and try not to move. I need to start calling again, or they might not be able to find us." He raised his head, putting the horn to his mouth once more, and began calling again.

Lord Baldur heard the call of his father's horn. A call he had hoped never to hear in his lifetime. It was Eclipse out on patrol this morning, and he had every confidence that the stallion would not be blowing the horn if the circumstance was not dire. Leaving instructions with his second, Lord Mwee, to gather the troops, so to speak, he took to the air, following the sound of the horn.

Eclipse had obviously climbed quite high on his patrol, for Baldur had to keep going higher in order to get closer to the sound of the horn. All manner of thoughts were going through his mind as he flew to who-knew-what. What manner of creature or man might be coming over the mountains? Would his Glory be able to hold them off on their own, or would he need to call for other Glory's to come to their aide? The sound of the horn suddenly stopped, and he was at a loss as to which direction to go. Had Eclipse fallen to the enemy? What would he do if he could not find the incursion spot? Minutes passed, which seemed like hours, and then as suddenly as it had stopped, the horn sounded again.

He saw Eclipse standing on the mountainside, but what he didn't see was the enemy he had expected. Eclipse was instead, standing over the fallen body of another unicorn. A number of emotions flooded him at that moment, the least of which was anger. Anger at Eclipse for using the horn when there was no imminent danger to the land. Concern was what was foremost in his mind, and sadness in his heart, for it was clear the unicorn was either badly hurt, or worse, dead. He slowed his descent and landed near the two unicorns. "Eclipse, report!" he ordered.

"Forgive me Lord Baldur, but I could think of no other way to summon aide without leaving her here alone. She fell from the sky, and is badly hurt. I knew I could not get her down off the mountain by myself. The only thing I could think of was to use the horn." He lowered his head before his Lord, the leader of their Glory, and hoped that his explanation would be sufficient enough to keep him from being reprimanded.

"So she lives," said Baldur. It was not so much a question as it was a statement. "We will discuss your use of the horn later. Is she awake? Has she spoken?"

Eclipse felt a small sense of relief as he answered Lord Baldur's questions.

"I see. Well then," he said, and leaning over the fallen mare he said to her, "Getting you down off the mountain will not be easy my dear, and I'm afraid it is going to hurt you a great deal. But if we leave you here, you will die come nightfall. You are too big for me to carry down myself, but with the help of Eclipse here, I think we can get you down, that is of course if you can stand and walk with our help. We will support you on either side with your wings draped over our backs for balance. You won't need to open your eyes. We will act as your eyes, and guide you down the mountain to my Glory. There we can see to your wounds. If you think you can do this, give me some sign." Baldur and Eclipse waited for the mare to make some indication that she had heard and understood.

Wilca listened as the new arrival spoke to the other stallion. When he directed his speech at her, she grew restless. Could she stand? She had no idea if she could stand. She didn't feel any pain in her legs, but that was no proof that one or more of them wasn't broken. What she did know was that her wing hurt, and it hurt a lot. The idea of one of them supporting her under that wing gave her cause to worry. Would she be able to endure the added pain all the way down the mountain? She didn't know, but she knew she didn't want to die on this mountainside. She gathered all the strength she could muster, and gritting her teeth, she answered his question by trying to rise to her feet.

The two stallions realized immediately what the mare was attempting to do, and Lord Baldur quickly motioned for Eclipse to go around to her other side. He would take the side with the damaged wing. They both lowered their bodies so that they could maneuver under her outstretched wings, and moved in close to her body on either side. She felt their touch on the sides of her body and it gave her peace to know she was not alone in this. As they began to stand, her wings came to rest more heavily across their backs, and she felt herself being buoyed up off the ground. With one on each side of her, they started their journey down the mountainside.

The pain in her wing was increasing, and she still could not bring herself to open her eyes without pain shooting through her head. Hours passed and then she could feel the terrain beneath her hooves change from the rockiness of the mountain, to a softer, smoother dirt floor. She hoped that they were nearing the Glory, because she wasn't sure how much longer she could remain standing. A few minutes later, she could hear the sound of other unicorns calling out, announcing their arrival, and she felt a change in those who were helping her.

Eclipse was glad to have Rune come to relieve him. As the stallion came in under the mares wing and took his place, Eclipse slid out and came to a stop. He saw that Lord Baldur had done the same, being replaced by Lord Mwee.

As one body moved away from either side, she felt another take it's place. They guided her along until finally she was told she could lie down. Her legs nearly collapsed under her, as the last of her reserve was drained away. They gently lowered her body to the ground as those supporting her carefully slid out from under her wings. She was able to fold the undamaged wing against her back, thereby giving those around her more room to move in and examine her. She felt a horn touch her forehead and the pain there began to recede. This was the healing touch she had heard about growing up, such as her mother had. She wanted very much to open her eyes and see who it was she owed her life to, but the memory of the stabbing pain prevented her from doing so. Moments later the pain in her head was completely gone and a voice told her to try and open her eyes. She slowly opened her eyes, relieved that the pain she had experienced before did not return. She was looking into the face of a someone she never thought she would see again. "Mother?" she whispered, "Is it really you?" She looked around and saw other members of the Glory watching, concern written on their faces.

How had she not known? Willow was taken by surprise at the mare's question. She had not seen her children in a long time. Could this truly be her daughter, Wilca? "Wilca, is it you?" she asked.

"Yes mother, it is I," replied Wilca with what strength she could manage.

Willow lowered her head to her daughters and nuzzled her as only a mother can. "Have no worry Wilca. Your wing is not so badly damaged that you will not fly again. Though it will take me a couple of days to complete the healing of it. Until then, you are our guest." She turned to look at a gold-winged stallion and said, "This is Lord Baldur. It was he and Eclipse who brought you down from the mountain. Rest easy, and know you are safe, and I am here with you."

The Glory leader bowed his head to her, but said nothing, turning away and leaving Wilca in the care of Willow.

Eclipse gave Wilca one last look then followed after his leader. They entered Baldur's cave and Eclipse waited for the hammer to fall.

Baldur had been trying to decide how best to address this unconventional use of his father's horn by his patrol leader. It was well understood that the horn was only to be used in the case of an incursion from the far side of the mountains, yet he also knew that if Eclipse had not blown the horn, the mare would not have survived the night on the mountain. He was still unsure if he should reprimand the stallion, or commend him for his quick thinking.

"So Eclipse, what do you have to say for yourself?" Baldur decided to let him speak first, and he would take into account Eclipse's words into his final decision.

Eclipse had been going over and over in his mind what he would say in this situation, from the first blow on the horn earlier that day. He only hoped that his leader would understand, and be lenient with him. "My Lord, I cannot deny that I used the Horn for a situation it was not intended for, and that I put the rest of the Glory under undue stress because of it. However, in my defense I would say that given the circumstances, I had no other options. Had I left her there to come get help, we would not have reached her before nightfall, and she would likely have died before we did. I was unable to help her down the mountain by myself in her wounded state, and even had I stayed with her until someone came in search of me, she would have died without a healer. My healing skills were not sufficient to her wounds. I was at a loss my Lord, and did the only thing I could think of to get help to her in a timely manner. I will accept any punishment you see fit to assign to me."

Baldur's heart went out to his patrol leader, as he listened to his explanation. It was true that his rule concerning the use of the Horn had been broken, but he had never taken into consideration that one of his patrols might encounter such a situation. Other than himself, no one in the Glory could fly, and the distances that they had to patrol could be miles distant from any help. This situation had made it clear to him that changes would have to be made.

"Eclipse, I want to commend you on your quick thinking, and thank you," said Baldur. Eclipse was taken by surprise at his leaders words. Baldur continued, "For showing me that I have not taken into account the different situations that can befall the patrols sent out into the mountains. Changes will need to be made so that no patrol is ever put into a situation like this again, and you are to thank for that," Baldur said. "Now, give me the Horn, and go get some rest. I will discuss this with Lord Mwee, and I will make an announcement soon as to what is to be changed."

Eclipse was astounded at his luck in not being held accountable for his breach of the rules. He at least expected to be removed from his position as Patrol Leader. But instead he was being commended for showing his leader that he had not seen a potential problem with the way in which the patrols were run. He bowed his head to his leader and exited the cave. He would go back and check on Wilca before heading to his own cave for a well earned rest.
