Spring was transitioning into the warm humid summers. During that time of the year the ocean only experienced its powers when the days became too hot and lighting would light up the grey sky. The summer storms would be over as quick as they came unlike their sister storms in the winter that would rage upon those unlucky souls to be caught without shelter. Angry, turbulent, grey waves crash against the rock, launching spray high into the air; even at her worse the ocean was a spectacular sight to behold. After the winter storms, a time of tranquility and peace would wash over the land and sea, but those who resided near the sea knew the calm would not last, for the sea was a tempestuous mistress.

It was during those storms when the Princess of the Sea felt most invigorated; her crystal blue eyes would spark similar to the lightening flickering across the cloud filled sky and an excited energy would consume the princess. For in those moments, she was truly alive.

Freedom and the sense of being alive where rare feelings for the young princess, for all her life she has been residing in one place, with the same view overlooking the sea. Besides the salty water near her, the only other constants in her life, besides her trusted friend Inky the Octopus, were the moon and the tides. Molokai le Mahina was in a sense locked with in a tower of jagged rock; she was held there by a sense of duty and a promise that was made on the day she was born. Freedom was only a wish that she knew may never come true.

Her tower of stone was in actuality a large cave near the edge of the cove. A small river of salt water flowed from the sea into the cavern, creating a small pool which was Inky’s domain. Surrounding the cave and a small section of white sandy beach is a fence of jagged rocks that had been made deadly sharp by continuous beatings of the ever changing weather. This was her cage, what kept the princess locked inside.

During the summer and winter storms, she would cast aside the protection of her cave and stand on the white sand, her bright eyes locked on the sea between the gaps of the jagged stones. The wind would whip through her navy blue mane and the cold rain would beat down upon her pink pearlish coat. In those short burst of storm, her depression at being abandoned by her parents and tutors would dissipate, for who could be sad during such a marvelous display of the power of nature?

When the storms cleared and the seas were once again calm, Molokai could feel the feel the depression again settling into her bones. Her one and only companion was Inky, who was a gift from one of her tutors who taught her about the world under the sea and the life that inhabited it, he too abandoned her, but his gift never left her side.

As days, months, years wore on; Molokai found it more different to be cheered by her dear friend and the beautiful treasure he guarded. Within Inky’s green glass orb rested a wonderful, shining treasure that gave the princess hope. The hope that one day he would come and relieve her of her duty to stay within the “Tower”. He would sweep her off her hooves, they would be lifemated, and they would live happily ever after.

She still held onto the hope that her prince would come; she had planned to sing a song of hope as she overlooked the cove but what came out of her mouth as she locked over the dark seas was a melancholy melody that soared across the waves.

Here I must remain,
Constant in my pain.

Each night I would look to the moon,
Wishing that soon,

You would come to me.
To my tower overlooking the tempestuous sea.

Here I must remain,
Constant in my pain.

For years I have been here,
But now I fear the darkness is coming near.

Pressing upon my heart,
Spreading the lies that my life will never start.

Here I must remain,
Constant in my pain.

I wish to be free,
To possess the key.

I am crying over you,
Causing my pain to begin anew.

Here I must remain,
Constant in my pain.

Will you ever come?
And lead me to freedom,

Or will here I remain,
Consumed by my pain?

With tears filling her eyes, the princess returned to the darkness of the cave and her heart. Before she reached the out cropping of rock that was her tower, the sea breeze tickled through her mane as it shifted directions; a small smile appeared on her countenance and her loneliness abated some, a summer squall was on its way.

Prince Nikolai was at his usual post, staring out at a lone stone tower that held the most beguiling mare he'd ever met... Er he'd ever almost met. He'd only seen her from afar and it was so torturous to be so close and yet so far away. He only had himself to blame for it though. Afraid she wouldn't like him, or be disappointed, he had never worked up the nerve to see her. It would be better if she were just surprised, right? They day they finally get together? With a sigh and a shake of his head he scolded himself. A lady needed wooing and.. flowers.. and some sort of romance that he probably didn't have!

The sun was setting low in the sky, and he'd have to turn in soon. Dragging his tail fin out of the water, he wandered back up the bank toward his home, thoughts racing through his head. His parents had strictly ordered him to do his duty, and be with the princess. Honestly, he probably would have refused if he didn't actually want her himself. Duty and royalty aside, he would have wanted her just as she is. No one cared if he saw her or not, she was merely a means to joining royal bloodlines, as if she wasn't actually someone with a heart and feelings of her own. He wrinkled his nose at the thought, and sometimes he just couldn't believe he was related to any of them. Look where that got them, none of them seemed happy in their mated relationships. It was more.. they tolerated each other. Barely, he thought as he rolled his eyes. That wasn't the life he wanted for himself, and damned if he'd let her slip through his hooves because he was an arse about not visiting her. He'd go over there soon... As soon as he kicked his own butt in gear about it. With a sigh he shook his head at himself, and continued on toward home, images of a dazzling princess swimming through his mind.

Molokai le Mahina sighed as the first drizzle of rain fell to the earth. It was a sigh filled with so much longing, why was she not like the rain, traveling where ever she pleased? Because of him, of the promise, a voice inside her head whispered.

“Well, where is he?” her heart wanted to break at those words she spoke aloud, that seemed to echo hollowly back to her ears. She had been waiting years for her Prince Charming to come and free her from this lovely but lonely prison. Sapphire colored eyes searched for her only friend in the world, and the one who had kept her sane all these years in solitude. Molokai’s cephalopod friend was staring at her with his large golden eyes as he resided in his little pool, the green of his treasure barely seen beneath the surface of the salty water.

“Hello dear friend. Do you think he heard my song?” Inky blinked his citrine eyes and Molokai shook herself, “Right, I am just being silly. He could not have possibly heard the song unless he was near the tower and that would mean he has had ample opportunity to remove me from this place.” She gave her eight legged friend a sad smile, “I do not know what I would do without you here… Most likely go bad. Do you think Tutor knew I would need a friend? Oh, how I would give anything to have you be able to speak!”

Her thoughts went back to the day when she first laid eyes upon her greyish blue companion. Molokai le Mahina had many tutors, each specializing in a subject, for her parents did not want the future queen of the realm to be lacking in an arrange of knowledge, even if she was perhaps a bit naive. The wonderful tutor who bestowed Molokai with Inky was her Oceanography and Marine Biology tutor. He noticed her love for the subject and the loneness in her eyes; so as a gift he brought her Inky. Inky was the first sea creature Molokai has set her eyes upon and fell instantly in love. She has the belief that Inky felt the same on their first encounter.

Soon after that joyous day when Inky and she were united, Tutor left without a word, never to be seen by Molokai ever again; just like all the other tutors the young princess had in her life. But this time, there were no others after him; no one else came to teach the princess, to give her some interpersonal relationship, however short. It seemed as if the world had forgotten about the Princess of the Sea.

“Inky, am I to be forever alone in this cave?” The octopus had a perturbed look on its countenance, “Oh do not be like that, you know perfectly well what I meant. I want to fall in love, to travel, to have an adventure. Have you ever had an adventure? No of course not, you have been stuck here with me.”

Molokai let out another mournful sigh and turned her gaze out the cave mouth to the falling rain. Would he ever come? The stallion who was meant to love her and free her from this hell? Negative emotions swirled, she would forever be alone, bound by duty and to a promise. Would the day ever come for that promise to be fulfilled?

With a lamented cry, Molokai stared out the cave with a blank expression upon her countenance as she warred within herself. She would forever be alone.

The foreign tune that he hummed echoed out over the beach as the Gypsy stallion splashed playfully in the waves. He had been travelling by land for nearly two days now and had greatly missed the sensation of cold, salty water caressing his skin. A charming smile lifted the corners of his mouth as his hooves fell into rhythm with the tune and, with graceful and purposeful steps; he began to dance a jig that had been common in his clan. Moving this way and that his humming soon became louder as he enjoyed the unbridled bliss of the moment he was now in. It had always been his philosophy that there was much to be unhappy about in this life but living in the moments of good always seemed to make it worthwhile. So even though his clan was all but completely destroyed and he had been absent from them for such a long time, he was still able to find a little piece of serenity here on this unfamiliar beach. “A blessing indeed.” He spoke softly in his lilted tone. Allowing the waves to swirl around his feet a few more times he trotted back inland and continued on his journey.

Regarding where he had just come from a look of satisfaction painted his features, at least now he would be close enough to the ocean to visit it whenever he wished. Only a day or so ago he had worried he was beginning to dry out and would soon resemble a starfish that had been out of water for far too long. With a swish of his tail and a cocky grin he rolled his eyes quietly to himself and continued in the direction he had been travelling in prior to his reprieve. The thing about being a Gypsy was that one never truly knew where they were going, they just went. He knew he was on a quest of the utmost importance but also had to admit that he had very little to go on as far as location. Whether it be the spirits of his ancestors directing him or some other force he did not know, but something told him he was on the right path.

His more serious thoughts were interrupted when a most sorrowful sounding song reached his ears, causing him to stop and attempt to hone in on the direction from which it had come. The notes were so full of melancholy and a little bitterness that they tugged on the chords of his heart. He had heard songs of heroes passing, and his ancestors being killed but none of them amounted to the measure of sheer sorrow in this one song. Allowing his ears to swivel this way and that he let the voice guide him where it may, his feet never losing their happy prancing movements. Before long he noticed that he had begun to sway slowly with the rhythm, dancing along with the song. It was quite beautiful if not more than a little heartbreaking.

After a while of following this unknown voice his eyes widened as a great formation of rock loomed over the ocean. It was quite a formidable looking structure and he could not for the life of him think of why someone would wish to go there of all places to sing, but that is where the voice was coming from. Moving with his stealthy feet he circled the base of the thing a few times before noticing what looked to be a cave some ways up. With a determined smile he began clambering up the rocks, his hooves slipping out from beneath him and causing him to slip and slide here and there. “This is tougher than I thought…” He grumbled silently to himself.

After what seemed like a long and clumsy journey he reached the mouth of the cave, puffing a little bit with the sheer effort. He was not a mountain goat after all; his strengths lie on the land and in the sea not upon cliffs. Straightening himself up and squaring his shoulders he ducked into the dark maw of the cave. He was not fearful of what may lurk within but when the singing came to a halt he began to doubt himself a little. He would have stopped entirely and turned back had it not been for the muffled sound of voices up ahead. Moving stealthily through the dim light he soon found himself looking in on some sort of strange cavern. Here there was a little more light and it was much easier to see but when a beautiful mare crossed his line of vision he found himself shocked. That was the last thing he had expected. Clearing his throat, and without hesitation, he moved out from his hiding place. Bowing his head and lifting his right foreleg in the traditional greeting he smiled.

“Sastipe, my lady.”

Nothing signaled his approach, he was silent like a phantom, his hoof steps barely making a noise on the rock. She only became aware of his presence when he spoke; causing her to give a slight jolt and a slight squeak escaped her mouth. His voice was deep and exotic, with a slight accent, it sent a shiver down her spine, and elicited a pounding in her chest as she stared at the handsome stallion who had effortlessly entered her prison.

Deep blue eyes widened as she took in the stallion, he had fins and a tail similar to her. Was he the same species? A realization caused the mare to gasp in shock, “Are you the one?” Her voice was barely a whisper; could this be her Prince Charming?

With this idea racing through her head, she studied the other kelpi, trying to determine if there was anything princely about him. His legs were the color of the sunset setting over the ocean and the rest of his body was a dark blue riddled with white markings that appeared to be stars in the night sky. Orion being the first constellation she found and her favorite one at that. Beneath his braid was a glowing full moon marking. Wrapped around his head was a type of scarf that had tiny little gold coins at the ends, they moved as he moved, hypnotizing Molokai. His eyes, a teal blue were aimed at her, causing butterflies to flutter in her stomach. What was wrong with her? Was she getting sick?

The princess stared at him unsure of what to say, this was the first time she talked to a stallion who was not one of her tutors. Inky pulled himself up onto her rump and stared at the intruder with gleaming yellow eyes.

Was this not what she wanted? A companion to have conversations with, someone other than Inky? To no longer be alone? Yes, it was, but then why did she not speak? Was she shy? The Princess evaluated this new emotion with curiosity, what was it about this stallion who made her clam up? With a deep breath the Princess of the Sea sequestered her courage. “Hello there, I am Molokai le Mahina,” she purposefully left out the Princess part just in case he was a thief, “Might I inquire who you are?” Her words sounded standoffish and she wanted to wince, but she held off on the urge for it was too late; the words were in the air.

Her reaction to his greeting was not at all what he was expecting and he all at once felt a little guilty for startling the young beauty. Lowering his leg he presented an apologetic smile and was about to speak words of comfort to her when she came out with the strangest question he had come across in all of his travels. His brows furrowed and his mouth opened and closed a moment as he attempted to find the correct way to respond to her question. “Am I the one?” He repeated more to himself than to the mare standing before him. “I suppose it depends on what ‘the one’ is. If you mean the one dashing stallion in this cavern, then yes. If you mean the one as in romance I have not yet determined my answer. If you mean the one and only I must say you have been stuck in this tower for far too long, there are many of our kind out there.” His less than philosophical answer seemed to please him and he nodded his head proudly at the conclusion.

He had to keep himself from straining under her assessing gaze and for a moment thought he had done something wrong when he caught the look of wonderment in her eyes. Hadn’t she socialized with anyone before him? Certainly with the way she was studying him now it appeared that she had spent a very long time apart from other beings. Instead of asking her what she was doing or interrupting her he took the opportunity to look her over equally. Her skin was glistening like that of the fabled pearl, and her dark hair reminded him of the waves he so adored. He was falling into a poetic mood over her looks and the gentleness of her voice when two yellow eyes caused him to wrinkle his nose and take a step back. Whatever was glaring at him was very ugly and it almost completely ruined his glee. Hesitantly taking his eyes off of the creature he laughed nervously. “I-I am Emilian Lovel my lady,” he paused and repeated what she had said in his head, “Er…your highness?” Quickly looking around the cave he began to wonder what kind of royalty inhabited rocks. “Should I be bowing to you?”

Looking once more at the creature stuck to her back he shook his head and journeyed a little farther into her domain. “Have you been here long? I mean, are you a newly established kingdom or something?” He stopped at the edge of a small tide pool in the center of her room and gazed into it, happily assessing his appearance before scanning more of the unusual tower. “I must say, in all of my adventuring I have never come across a castle quite like this one.”

She wanted to shake her head at his own questions in response to hers; he could not be the one she dreamed about, he really could not be the one, could he? He made her heart pound and her eyes dilate, all the signs of attraction, but he was the first stallion she laid eyes upon that was her own age, so of course he would cause her heart to flutter. Molokai did not answer his questions, for she was not sure how to respond; it would most likely creep him out if she told him she dreamt of a stallion cloaked in shadows who would be the one to free her from this rocky place.

Her back visibly stiffened when he gave her a rank, she tried to remember if she said anything to give away her status, “I-I didn’t say anything about being royal. H-how did you guess?” She was extremely nervous and his words did not compute, his name was all she heard. Emillian Lovel, what a strange exotic name he had, “Where are you from Mister Lovel?” Her eyes began to glow with the prospect of new stories to fill her long arduous days of nothing. In her embarrassment and excitement she did not notice how the stallion looked at Inky or that Inky had tightened his grip upon her back. “Oh”, his words finally found their way back into her mind and she gave a slight blush, “Please don’t bow, it just seems silly given the circumstances. No this is not a newly established kingdom, I am quite sure we have been around for a while, or so the history I was taught depicts,” she looked around the tower, her rocky home, it was lovely, but it was all she could see, “This castle is my tower and my cage.”

The word prison almost escaped her mouth, but she did not want the stallion to believe she was a criminal. She had already said too much, he would most likely think her a silly stupid mare if she told him she was trapped in this place. He was able to make his way into her tower without too much trouble, why could she not do the same leaving? She could not leave, because she was bound by duty and promises made long ago by two rivaling kingdoms. Would Mister Lovel be able to understand? She was not sure anyone but Inky could understand the situation in which she was entangled.

The barrage of questions he had asked her had all but vanished into the musky air around them, for Emilian was much too busy surveying this odd domicile to dredge them back up. His surf colored eyes roved from cavern wall to cavern wall as he slowly walked the area, his hooves making a delicate clicking sound as he made his way. Although it engendered within him a sense of amused curiosity there was also an air of something much darker that had seeped into these rock walls. Shaking this disturbing notion he turned to face her once more, a pleasurable smile causing white teeth to gleam out from under purple lips.

He chuckled at her stammering but quirked a curious brow before responding. “I didn’t think you were actual royalty,” his expression became a tad more serious, “I was drawing off of tales I heard during my travels about princesses being held captive in great towers, awaiting the day their dashing prince came to rescue them.” Raising a hoof he assumed a noble pose before winking at her. Even though he acted in such a nonchalant manner he had begun to become nervous as well, not certain about whether or not he had stumbled across a mare with what his clan called Moon Sickness. It was an illness where the mind was clouded, causing that soquilli to become insane and spout things that just were not so. She could actually have been royalty, or she could only be wearing a crown in her mind.

“Please, call me Emilian.” He stated with a respectful dip of his head. Her question had him feeling excited once more and he moved closer to her, a spark in his eye revealing his enthusiasm over the subject. Sweeping his wonderfully colorful tail in a large arc he spoke in his best story teller voice. “I am not from one place, I come from many! My clan and I have no home but the open road. I have been to many places, seen many things, and learned enough tales, songs, and dances to keep someone occupied for a lifetime!” Doing a quick little jig with his feet he leaned close to her. “See these coins decorating my head? I have one from each place we visited!” A green tentacle reaching defensively out toward him had him taking a step back and once more slinging a glare at her yellow eyed friend.

But the happy moment of tales and dancing passed as she mentioned this tower being her cage. He all at once grew somber, his eyes seeking one of the slits in the wall that allowed her to see the outer world. “Cage.” He repeated in a solemn tone, his accent growing thick and heavy over the word. “If your kingdom is old, this certainly cannot be it. Where is your home?” He asked quietly. He didn’t even want to touch on the subject of what was holding her just yet, it was odd but he found himself fearful of doing so.

Why did she have to open her big mouth and assume that when he meant royalty, he actually meant royalty? Now he knew that she was a princess or someone who believed herself to be a princess. She could be delusional; her best friend was an octopus after all. Molokai shook her head; she was not going to discuss her mental state, for the fear that she may actually be some coral short of a coral garden. Her head cocked to the side, “Oh? There are tales of such things?” She gave a slight giggle at his charming movement and the butterflies reappeared in her stomach. The sea princess returned his dip of the head, “It is a pleasure to meet you Emilian; I do not usually get much company here, so I apologize if my manners are a bit rusty.”

A giddy sensation filled the mare and her eyes opened wide in excitement, “Please, please tell of these amazing places that you have been. The adventures, the stories, the dances, the songs! Those are some of my favorite things to hear.” A dreamy look appeared on her countenance, she was becoming less shy and opening up to the stranger, for he had some stories to tell. She did not want to scare him away with her timidness. “That is, if it would not be a bother. I would love to hear of all the places you have been. Even though my view is lovely, I still wish to see more,” She gave the gypsy a soft smile, “Perhaps I can live vicariously through your tales?”

Again, she ruined the good mood by mentioning the place that held her captive, she looked over the jagged rocks to the ocean, “This is my home. I have no memory of any other place.” Molokai did not know if she could trust him, but she wanted to tell him the story so he did not believe her to be a complete loon, “When I was born I was placed in this protective cage to keep the evilness of the world from tainting me. I would not know greed, hatred, fear, any of those negative emotions. I was to remain pure until the day that my prince, the one I was betrothed to since birth, came to take me from this place and unite our two kingdoms,” she let out a sigh, “I have been waiting years. I believe they have forsaken me, but even if I believe that, I still feel it is my duty to stay. The duty as a princess of the sea kingdom.” She shook her head and looked away from the stallion, “You probably think I am crazy for staying here in isolation. If I did not have Inky, I am not sure what I would be now.”
