It would be dark soon, the sun was already setting casting Trine's lake with all the glory of it's colors until the water looked to run with the paint of a harpers pallet. The stars too had just begun to light up the sky, the night casting it's shadows over the Weyr and surrounding areas even as weary men and women filtered in from where they had been working to clean up the destroyed huts and broken buildings. Two figures though made no move to rise and sat forgotten and unseen among the debree of one such destroyed building hidden safely away by it's shadows from all, but sharper eyes.
Hekate sat, her back propped against a broken beam with Devith resting beside her his head laid in her lap where she caressed the fine lines of her handsome silver's face with her fingertips. Her bright amber gold eyes were distant though as she stared up at the stars a small frown tugging at her lips.
We should return to the Weyr. . . She finally spoke reluctance ringing in her every word, but made no move to shift nor did Devith so much as twitch a muscle to rise. He was growing rappidly and had far surpassed the time when he was able to curl fully in his rider's lap, not it was she who could almost curl in his own.
Stay. We can wait a while longer. He rumbled softly in his rider's mind his eyes whirling a gentle blue and green though flecks of yellow had begun to surface in his eyes at the great sense of longing that filled Hekate's heart. If she did not wish to return to the Weyr yet then she would not return to the Weyr. He would see to that much.
Glancing down at her dragon she smiled bending to place a rare kiss on the top of the silver's dusky head before relaxing once more against the broken beam to stare at the stars. The bright glittering and ever distant stars, before Devith they had often been her only companion in life.
I am here now Mine. I would have found you no matter where you had wandered. You could not have hidden from me~ Devith purred low in her mind his voice an odd clash of adoration and predatory drive. Ever since the moment his eyes had met hers and impression had been made Devith had always been a touch jealous of anything he thought drew his rider's attention more then himself. He was after all the best and most deserving of her affections. Something she made it a point to reassure him off often.
I know Devith, but humans are not so good at locating their dragons or come fall or fire I would have made it on those sands to greet you. Hekate assured him with a soft smile as she stroked his hide. Her dragon, her wonderful silver Devith. While the constant refusal at Holds had wounded her pride the fact that it had seen her eventually to Trine had been a great gift to her. She shuddered to think what would have happened had she not decided to attending that hatching or worse had Devith's egg been laid at another Weyr that did not allow atypicals. Hekate thought her grip tightening protectively around her lifemate.
I would have come for you even then. As if such things could deter one such as I. Devith assured her and for a moment the two fell into companionable silence both staring up at the stars, the only noise to be heard the soft slightly whistling breath of Prince the silver flit sleeping amonst her hair like a great silver ornament and Baron the young brown still fast asleep wrapped against her neck. Her other flits had retreated back to the Weyr to rest leaving the young rider in peace for the moment.

There seemed to be only one place where someone could get a little bit of peace lately...and that was only if they had a dragon to take them there. In the air, D'lin could forget for a little while everything that had happened. He could forget about the ruins that Trine was in, the over crowding, the broken buildings, the occasional more grim reminder of the fighting that had taken place. Not that D'lin really needed the reminder..he had merely to close his eyes and see it all again.
'It is getting dark' Plexith broke in, more to pull his riders thoughts from the current subject then because he was having trouble seeing, though being a dragon that would come soon enough.
'Your right..we should head in' D'lin agreed, though he didn't really want to return to his bunk straight away, he was sharing at the moment - like everyone else and while he liked N'mol it still wasn't the peace he was looking for at the moment. 'A walk by the lake perhaps?'
'That'll work' D'lin agreed, slapping Plexith's bronze neck in affection while he angled to land near the shore, massive wings moving great amounts of air as he back-winged to land as lightly as a bronze could upon the ground. Dismounting as his dragon mantled his wings D'lin and his bronze began to wander down the shoreline, eyeing the ruined buildings that they passed.

Hekate and Devith saw them long before they saw Hekate and Devith, but that didn't make the young Weyrling and dragon move. In fact if anything the two sets of eyes settled quietly on the walking pair eyeing them impassively. It was just so quiet and calm and for a few brief seconds Hekate had felt almost at peace under the stars. She hated the roof of her now very cramped weyr that she shared not only with her annoying weyrling roommate, but others as well and she'd made it a point to avoid returning there as often as possible.
It didn't help the sheer crush off bodies taking up residence in Trine had caused her claustrophobia to act up something horrible. She hardly even went into the dining hall to get food instead sending one of her flits to bring some bread or circling around to the back entrance of the kitchen to fetch a cup of klah and something to munch on when she could. Luckily most of her firelizards were old enough to hunt for themselves to take some strain off the Weyr and her few young ones she was able to get enough scraps off of Devith's kills to keep them happy. The young dragon having recently upgraded to taking out small wherries that were kept pinned for dragons like himself.
Should we call out to them? Devith mused somewhat sleepily eyeing the two with mild interest. After all his dusky hide did allow him to blend in rather well with the ashen and burned ruins dotting Trine though his rider's shock of blood red hair should be enough to allow D'lin to spot her when he finally glanced over at their hiding place.
No. Let's enjoy the quiet while it lasts. Hekate replied feeling somewhat irritated at having her musings interrupted. There was so much to think on, so many things to deal with. Still the bronzerider seemed a decent sort, perhaps he'd make interesting company should he spot them.

'Not quite the weyr we used to know is it?' D'lin asked his dragon as he took in the burned building's. Perhaps the lake had not been the best of destinations D'lin decided as he vividly recalled the battle that had taken place along it's shores. It hadn't happened right here of course...but much of the beach looked very much like the rest of it. Close enough to remind him anyways.
'We are here, the Weyr is here..that is all that matter's' Plexith stated firmly, lowering his great bronze head to nudge his rider gently. They had been busy lately, things far more hectic then usual and it was nice to spend quiet time with his, though it disturbed him to see his rider so distressed by recent events. Humans..they could be so very complicated at times.
'I expect your right' D'lin agreed, pausing so that he could reach up and scratch Plexith's lowered head. 'This was a lot easier when you were smaller' He told the dragon who rumbled in amusement at the comment before lifting his head to peer at a nearby building. 'Perhaps so...but speaking of small things I believe we are being watched, a hatchling and his take shelter in the building' He advised his rider.
Turning at the comment D'lin had only to sweep his gaze quickly over the ruins to see the distinctive red head and her silver companion. Well now that he had seen them it wouldn't be polite to just walk off without at least saying hello and after a few moments he angled his steps towards her direction "Hekate, Devith..enjoying the evening?" He asked as he approached, stopping a few paces away while Plexith settled himself nearby to take advantage of the lingering warmth of the sand along the shore.

Devith was not exactly thrilled to have His and him spotted. He'd been enjoying having her all to himself and wasn't exactly open to sharing. Still the fact they were being greeted pleased him greatly. He and His were the best after all, it only served to reason that they would be noticed eventually.
"I am. It's a touch cramped back at the Weyr. I thought I would take advantage of the evening to get a little air and look at the stars." Hekate replied giving the bronzerider a nod of greeting. Devith even shifted marginally to eye the man momentarily which was about all the comfy silver seemed prone to do in his current position. "What brings out this way this evening D'lin?" She questioned, well more like attempted to make small talk. Anything to further drag out her eventual return to the cloistered hell her new found home had been transformed into.
Greeting D'lin, two-legger of Bronze Plexith and good evening bronze Plexith as well. Devith even hazard to finally speak up his eyes still whirling a lazy blue and green with his rider's ministrations. The pupils though were gradually beginning to flood with hints of red despite his rider's calming thoughts. He hadn't forgotten the last time they had run across the bronzerider even if the bronzerider himself had not been responsible for the grave insults.
It's too nice of an evening to get into a fight. I'd like to stare at the stars a bit longer instead of a wall due to disciplinary actions. Hekate cautioned Devith even though the silver knew well enough most of her words were a bluff. There was only him and Dizzian keeping her here and as long as he wanted to remain she would remain. The moment he wanted to leave she would pack up and go without blinking an eye though having gotten to know her fellow weyrling she would consider actually stopping in and saying good bye if need be. If fact she was fond enough of green and rider to even offer to let them come in.
Very well Mine. I shall behave for the moment.

"The same thing as you I think...escaping the crowds" D'lin responded "The crush will ease eventually, once the rebuilding is under control...at least we have more hands to help with that" He added, trying to give a silver lining to the situation that he knew many felt nearly intolerable. This was time for patience however - yes it was uncomfortable but it was important that they stand together now more then ever.
Since he found it somewhat uncomfortable to talk with someone while towering over them, D'lin found a nearby piece of rubble to sit on while they conversed."How is your friend and her dragon doing? Dizzian was it?" He asked, recalling the young weyrling and her green that he'd visited in the field hospital during the attack. He couldn't be positive that they had gotten the bronze wher and the man who had attacked her..but he was hopeful that the pair had been on the beach during the last fight. Not many handlers had walked away from that battle..and none of the whers.
The latent anger in Devith's eyes was plain but D'lin merely acknowledged the dragons greeting with a nod, it wasn't much of a secret in the Weyr that the silver and his rider were a bit on the...easily angered side. But that didn't much deter the bronzerider, everyone was a little bit easy to anger lately and it was important that he get to know the Weyrs future riders. They could fly in his wing someday.
'Devith' Plexith greeted the young dragon in a pleasant voice, he rather liked silvers..they were as capable in adulthood as he himself was but unlike his fellow bronzes did not constitute any sort of competition for the golds. 'Do you and yours fare well this evening?'

Hekate didn't even want to think about all the people shoved into Trine. The sheer mass of bodies and cramped spaces made her skin crawl so instead she chose to give a simple nod and ignore it. At the mention of Dizzian though she frowned. "She's getting better. They'll probably release her here soon, but Courath will likely have to stay a while longer. They're both about ready to go stir crazy even with Devith and I doing our best to keep them occupied." She explained softly stroking Devith's head easing the still somewhat irritated silver.
"I'm worried she will have a bit of difficulty flying. The bronze tore up her wings pretty bad, but the healers assured me that she will be able to get into the air." Hekate explained Devith lifting his head to touch her hand gently with his nose.
We will be there to catch them should something go wrong. Devith assured both Hekate and D'lin his tone strong and confident as usual. He would not have any sibling of his falling from the sky.
"Of course." She replied with a soft chuckle at her lifemate's comment.
At Plexith's greeting Devith turned his head eyeing the larger bronze his tail twitching slightly with curiosity. Mine and I fare well Plexith though she is sorely tempted to rest out here and I cannot blame her. Though I would perhaps choose a nicer spot then among the rubble. Devith rumbled his reply eyeing the charred and broken remains of the half collapsed hut they sat in with distaste. It was certainly not anywhere close to the standard of sleeping quarters he would prefer for him and His, but for now it would make do. Besides everyone two-leggers and dragons alike seemed to be having difficulty.
I do not like so many strangers around the Weyr though. Their presence troubles Mine greatly. Devith added peering up at Plexith for a moment. He did not fully understand why his was so bothered by the outsiders. True those from Benden were hardly polite, but her anger went beyond that and it bothered him.

D'lin nodded as he listened to news of her friend. It was good to hear that both of them had pulled through - when he had seen them in the makeshift field hospital during the fighting a small part of him had wondered if they would. Considering for a few moments D'lin rubbed his chin "Well...when I was small one of my sisters had a young flit who broke his wing, it never healed completely proper - it was always a little bit crooked but he was young when it happened and by the time he could fly I don't think he remembered that there was anything wrong with it at all, he'd learned to compensate for it and did just fine...the young are very adaptable, but I'm sure the healers have done what they could to ensure she can live up to her flying potential" Smiling a bit at the silver's comment. "It's comments like that which make me think I should look out for my wingleader position in a few years" He teased the pair with a slight wink. As a silver it was entirely possible.
Plexith chuckled slightly 'I think mine has considered it as well..but the thought of his cot will lure him back, he has had enough of sleeping on the ground I think" The bronze responded. 'I think everyone is a little bit troubled, mine desires us to work together however - he believes that we may be stuck together for quite some time. Hopefully yours will relax soon and be able to rest peacefully again'

Hekate considered his words carefully and nodded. "Hopefully she'll forget she was ever injured by the wher and where she got the scars. It's Dizzian I'm more worried about. I mean sure she seems fine, but well. . .I still haven't been able to find out anything about her parents and I think she's taken Courath being hurt pretty hard. Sometimes I wish humans could forget as easily as dragons do. Even Devith forgets after a time unless someone makes him really mad. Then he just stays mad and sort of forgets the reason and has this feeling that he's been wronged by them." Hekate explained glancing down at her friend as she stroked his shining head. She couldn't imagine what Dizzian must have gone through, just Devith getting his foot and shoulder sliced had been enough to send Hekate into a rage at his pain.
They should not have wronged me or Mine. Had they not I would not be mad at them. Devith said with a rather matter of fact snort as he nudged his rider's hand affectionately.
D'lin's comment about them possibly shooting for his position as Wingleader drew a wry chuckle from Hekate, the red head giving the bronze rider a grin. "I don't think you have to worry too much. I'm not really sure what Devith and I will do once we graduate to being wingriders~" She continued only to have her silver cut her off.
We will Burn and fight thread Mine as none have done so before! Devith rumbled his eyes glittering a rather vicious red at the mention of the destruction of dragonkinds age old enemy.
"Besides fighting thread of course." Hekate soothed her companion, but could not stop the dark smile that danced briefly across her lips at the thought of searing the menace from the sky. "Dizzian explained to me that usually Wingriders either choose to become messenger dragons or watch dragons first before looking to advance in rank. I think Devith though might be a bit overkill for a messenger dragon~" She continued turning back to D'lin, while the thought of Devith and her swooping down on a Hold in all their glory appealed to her she doubted her lifemate could stand acting as a mere transport.
I hope it will not be too long though I suppose Mine and I will eventually get used to it. Devith rumbled back to Plexith having grown bored with his rider and D'lin's talk. After all he had chosen her for her ambition and forethought. He trusted her to conduct them to an appropriately glorious future with a bit of help from himself of course.
