Many have told Maovyo over many moons that there is no cure for the disease that is killing so many lions in the pride. Maovyo still refuses to believe them. He believes somewhere out there that there is a plant that could cure the disease or even a plant if mixed with another might cure the disease. He just had to keep searching for new plants and experimenting with them to see if they would cure the sick lions. There had been a few that he had accidently made sicker and others that he had made feel better and those mixes had been adapted by the healers. He managed to take the good and the bad though there were times when he got way too many bad mixes and almost gave up but he knew he could never give up with so many lions sick and dying.
Today Maovyo was out searching the prides land looking for more plants to make certain medicines that the healers were low on. He had his nose to the ground sifting through the soft dirt. After a moment he lifted his nose and dug his claws into the dirt removing a good amount of dirt from a root. Once he had the root exposed his used his teeth to chew the root loose. He placed a piece of the root as long as his paw on the ground next to him and again started digging to expose more of the root to chew loose. He would do this until he had three or four good pieces to take back to the healers.

Malaya lifted her head to the breeze. Her nose told her that there was another feline up ahead. Her patrol that day had been pretty quiet, so she was looking forward to speaking to whoever it was. When she came in sight she nearly did a double take. If she hadn't know leopards couldn't catch the disease, she might have suspected he'd gotten sick. The black lioness stood for a moment and watched him dig up a second then third root. Finally she couldn't stand it any longer and headed closer.
"Pardon me. Do you mind explaining why your digging roots?" She looked closer and thought perhaps this might be one of the healers. With N'Seka being sick she was coming into more contact with them than she normally had. Malaya twitched her ears as she looked at the roots and the hole. "You do know you are on K'A lands?"

Maovyo jumped in suprise when he heard a voice call out behind him. He lifted his head with the last root he'd cut loose still in his mouth. Her questions were suprising but he could understand why she would ask as he had never seen her before and she had never seen him. He did try to keep to himself as much as he could so as to not become attached to the sick. He also spent a lot of time outside the pride searching other lands for foreign plants and such. After a moment he placed the root he had in his mouth down next to the other two and turned to face her. The white fur of his paws was covered in dirt as was his muzzle but the dirt on his muzzle was much less visible.
"I won't mind at all explaining Madam but first yes I do know I am on K'A lands. My name is Maovyo and I am an apothecary of the pride. I am digging these roots up to take to a few healers so they can make the roots into medicines for the sick." He replied to her hoping this explaination would be sufficient for her as he really needed to get these roots to the healers and being held up by a pride member was really unacceptable for him.

The moment she heard he was an apothecary, she relaxed. This wasn't a random rogue tresspassing then. She smiled at him. "I do apologize. My name's Malaya. I'm a Scout." The black female eyed the roots doubtfully. She knew nothing of plants but these.... They didn't look like they'd be much help.
"I would be happy to assist if I can Maovyo. It has been pretty quiet all day, and it looks like you may need help with those." She could of course be told to mind her own business. Not everyone liked help just offered. If that was the case then she'd simply continue along her rounds and let him carry on alone. He had seemed friendly enough though.

Maovyo smiled at the female as she appologized and introduced herself. "It's a pleasure to meet you Malaya." He replied with a nod and a glance at the roots on the ground as he spotted her eyeing them. They didn't look like they were tasty or even useful but to an apothecary who knew how they were used he knew exactly what role they played in the medicine they were turned into. He was confident and proud of his feeble looking roots.
At her offer he was a little suprised. Usually members who were not apothecary's were not interested in doing anything that pertained to it. He wasn't about to say no to the help though. He might actually be able to get more done with help. "Your help would be greatly apprieciated. Though I must warn you that this task is a dirty one." He said as he lifted a paw and waved it a little bit so Malay could see the dirt covering his paws.

Malaya shook her head in wonder at the roots. If he said they worked, then she had to believe him. That was why she was a scout and him the apothecary. She gave him a smile as he readily accepted her help. While she might not know plants that didn't mean she could carry or help dig them out.
A laugh escaped her. "As if I've never been dirty before. I'm not afraid of a little dirt. C'mon lets get to it. What can I do to help?" Once she'd decided to do something, Malaya got right to it. For all she knew these plants had to be returned to the pride quickly.

Maovyo smiled at Malaya's laugh. He had met few others beyond apothecary's that were willing to get covered with dirt for the sake of getting at the roots below. He was very pleased to see getting dirty wasn't a problem for all felines.
"Wonderful! I could actually use some help digging these roots up. The medic's are low on these roots. Their put into the pain killing medication so I need as many as we can dig up." He explained to her and then motioned to the roots he'd already dug up. "Once you get to the root it's easiest to chew loose a section just a bit long than your own mouth so they stick out just a bit and don't manage to go deep into your throat and choke you."

She did take interest when he said these were used for pain. Undoubtedly N'Seka would be getting a bit of these then. It made her pleased that she could help ease his pain. Perhaps she might volunteer to help a bit more. Malaya paid close attention when Maovyo gave advice on how to get them out. That was handy to know.
"How do you find them?" That was the biggest question. This place looked like plain dirt to her. "Or just tell me where you want me to dig." If he didn't want to tell her, then she could easily follow directions.

Maovyo was pleased to see that Malaya was paying attention and she was asking questions that let him know she was paying attention too. He was happy to tell her how to locate this root. It wasn't too hard to find and the leaves had an interesting shape.
"Well I know it's hard to tell from the destruction I did here but there was a plant growing here. I had to pull up the plant and dig in the dirt beneath to get it's roots out. The plant is easy to find because of the shape of it's leaves. The leaves of the plant are heart shaped and are usually in a cluster. This one was kind of small but had a good amount of roots to it. Here come with me I'll show you the plant so you know what your looking for." He explained and then he started off through the underbrush and motioned for her to follow.

Malaya gamely followed the leapard. She was happy that he told her how to find it, and would keep her eyes out for it now on patrol. Maybe if the healers asked her she could bring them some back. Though one thing bothered her.
"If we have to destroy the plant to get the roots, Maovyo, then what's to keep it from running out?" She could all too easily see the fear. An over gathering of the precious root lead to its excinction in the area. That was not something she wanted to happen. The suffering it would cause by not being available to the sick lions.

Maovyo was impressed by her question. It was a very valid question and he was very happy to answer it. "Well I will tell you a secret of the apothecary that we use when it comes to this plant which is very important here in the pride. The roots we are digging up one out of every three pieces of root we dig up we replant somewhere in the pride." He explained and smiled at her knowing he had probably confused her a bit.
"You see this plant can grow again from only one piece of it's root. It's an amazing plant and because of it's growing properties we are never trully in danger of completely digging this plant to it's death." He said in a very excited state. "This plant is my very favorite because of how easy it is to grow this plant back from it's roots."

Izzy Makani Fin, unless you want to do one more post for Mao. She was impressed by how fast the plant was said to grow. Well that certainly made it a bit easier! And if you remembed were you'd planted the roots last time, you shouldn't have to look very hard. Malaya grinned.
"Thanks for explaining. This plant is very handy. Lets get to work." The lioness pranced at Maovyo's side, helping to carry roots, dig them up, plant them, and carry their hard work back home. She would have something neat to tell N'Seka when she got back.
