Let's face it- it's a show which is out of production, which may or may never continue in movie form. Yet something about this show keeps us loyal. What is it about the show that keeps you a loyal fan after all this time? What part of you is it that connects to the show or the characters that keeps it fresh and interesting after watching the same episodes time after time?
One thing I really love about RD is that it deals with real people (OK, realistic characters) in an odd situation, and no matter what happens, they find the humor in it. They solve every problem, without super strength or intelligence, just good common sense, luck and humor. I can relate to something in each of the characters.
What about you?

Good point... 3nodding
What can i say? It's a show which holds a very very special place in my heart - I grew up with Red Dwarf!
I remember always watching it with my Dad. 3nodding Laughing so much at it I nearly cried. I remember the thrill and excitement of watching a new episode, that tingle in your fingers which gradually spread up your arms and down your spine... whee
The characters are all so human as well - they're believable. They've got their good points, and they've got their bad points, every one of them. People can relate to them.
Maybe it's the humour. I hear the same jokes, over and over, I know the plots, I know the one-liners that I've heard a thousand times, and yet... every single time I hear them, they ever fail to make me laugh. I look at it this way - either I've got short term memory loss, or those jokes are gems. And seeing as I can remember what I did 5 minutes ago, I reckon it's the latter. wink

I'm with you guys. The characters are believable, and the jokes just never seem to get old. No matter how many times we see Lister irritating Rimmer, it never gets old.

It's in my blood, I grew up watching it. Like everyone has said, it's believable, and apart from the whole lost in deep space thing, it's realistic. It doesn't glam up human life, it acknowledges that human kind has faults and isn't perfect. It then plays with these faults to make them funny. Well, you gotta laugh haven't you.....

Good point about it being important who you shared it with! My kids and I all know the episodes by heart, and it's the one show my b/f & I agree on totally. It makes it special when there'e a connection with other people, too.
Actually, just talking on the guild here made me go back and watch it all over again. It's better when you can talk about it, or someone else points out something you never paid attention, too. So you all make it special, too! biggrin

I mainly love it for the early seasons. It was just three guys trapped in space, with no prospects of ever getting any women or change of scenery... ever. That, to me, seemed to exemplify hilarity. Of course, they couldn't keep that up forever (it would get very old), so they had to start introducing new characters, bringing them to exotic places, et al. I understand it was needed, and I still like the later episodes, but the early ones will always be my overall favourites.
I think it's this weird (and cheap to produce) idea that I really love about Red Dwarf, and what got me into the show. Of course, what kept me with it after that idea was used up were the great character interactions they have. Those will never get old.

I've found that people who I've shown RD to, and who didn't get it, turned out to be people I didn't really have anything in common with. My bf's niece, her boyfriend, an ex-business partner. The fact that they didn't "get it" was a warning sign. These people have no sense of subtle word play or character interaction. This test hasn't failed me yet! biggrin
In a way, RD is a like a modern Shakespeare. That's where I first discovered the humor of word play and irony, and the subtlety of underplayed humor.

I like Shakespeare as well because of the word play. And it is not made in the USA. ninja

They always look like they're enjoying being their. Like, if they had a choice to be filming somewhere else that they wouldn't take it.
