User ImageIt was a beautiful day in the Phonyland Park, so beautiful it was inspiring. Or at least thats what the red and blonde colt thought as he carried his small satchel of writing materials to his favorite spot. It was near the pond, just under a tree to allow for cool shade near the crystal water. He gazed across nature's delight an sighed softly. While it was all very lovely he wished there was something more to inspire him, just one little thing to breath life into his artist's mind.

Finally reaching his spot he settled down and began to prepare his materials. He took out his quill, the lovely feather one he had convinced his father to buy him. After all a poet couldn't truly express himself without the proper instruments just like a musician couldn't truly play with purpose without the right violin. Now all he needed was true inspiration.

The squirrl climbing along the tree did not suffice; most because he couldn't think of anything that rhymed with squirrl. The ducks on the pond didn't prove much better, swans would have been more appropriate. Letting out a dramatic sigh he wondered if we would be able to write anything today.

Lady Faire was bored. There was not much going on in Phonyland currently. At least, not anything she was interested in. It was a weekday, and the local Renaissance Faire was only open on weekends. That was when she lived. All the time in between was like some sort of bad dream. All she really wanted to do was live the life of a princess. She just needed to convince everyone else of her royal heritage, and then she could be constantly immersed in her dream. It helped that she was an alicorn; they were naturally better because they could both fly and also work magic. It was the best combination a phony could hoped to be born into.

She lazily flapped around the park, hovering slightly just off of the ground. Lady went back and forth and back and forth and back and forth. If she had been touching the ground, there would have been a hole in the dirt. She paced as she tried to imagine living in an even more mythical land than Phonyland.

Larry had almost given up finding any inspiration for his next great poem when he looked up to see a beauitful brown filly flying in a most perturbed manner. She had a red and blonde striped mane, a tail to match. So lovely, so magestic in her movements. It was then he noticed the horn sticking out of her lovely long locks. She wasn an alicorn! Wow! He had seen a unicorn, his father was one after all, but never had he seen the mythical combo!

The fair maiden seemed agitated about something, like a young miss awaiting the arrival of her handsome suitor! He could not allow one so lovely a filly to be so distressed. But what could he do? Suddenly it came to him! Looking around he picked a few flowers from the bushes near by. Larry then quickly grabbed up a piece of paper and his feather quill then trotted over to the lady. He bowed in a florish, his blonde hair swaying in the wind.

"My fair maiden, what could cause such concernation in the face of one so lovely? Perhaps this gentle bard could inspire a smile upon thy face and incite merriment in thine heart?" he looked up wtih a smile. Did he really understand what he was saying? Well sort of. This was how the guys in his father's books always talked to long haired girls. If a girl was upsut you got her flowers or read her poetry to make her feel better.

Her heart jumped! Someone who appreciated ye olde speake as much as she did!

"Greetings, bard. You have found yourself in the presence of Lady Faire, Daughter of Total Party Kill and Spica, Princess of Phonyland, and First of her Name." She would have to work on her achieving some great feats and earning a nickname or two for her title once she was Old Enough. For now though, it would do. "You are welcome to entertain me," she said as she settled back on the ground and waved him to continue.

Ah a female of the proper speak! Or at least the kinda talk he read in books. He bowed again, presenting her the bouquet of simple flowers. "While you are a true lady all this poor bard can first offer is the land's simple gift and my name. I am Poet Lariat, future bard and composer of the written language of the age. Those of close realtion to me refer to me as Larry." He kissed her hoof ever so gentlemanly like, just as his father had taught him. "Sadly I have no mother, a creation of pure though is my origin! But a kind stallion, with a heart of gold, hath taken myself and my twin sister into his abode. He raises us with a strong sense of propriety and manners. His title is Honeysuckle, barer of the blooming essence of nature!"

Yeah he totally made that part up. But he was enjoying talking with the filly far too much to stop. He took out his quill and set the paper down, he gazed upon her with great intensity then began writing furiously. His imagination inspired he found it easy to create a poem. Finally he put his quill aside and stood up to read his creation.

"Ode to the Lady"

The sun in the sky shines upon the ground
but alas no inspiration could be found.
My heart grew heavy with sadness and despair,
for what I needed was a Lady Faire!

So amazing was she, light sparkled in her mane.
My heart did a flutter, her's I wish to tame.
But the firey presence I beheld in her face
told me that would not be the case.

A princess was she, fair and devine;
so for now my heart will pine.
For that Lady Faire, an angel in my heart;
from her company I wish never to part.

With that he bowed, hoping she would like his work.

Now this is how she was supposed to be treated! Lady Faire tried not to look too excited while Larry read his poem. She feigned that she didn't care, and kept a bored expression on her face.

But once he was done, she couldn't help but bobble up and down and clap a little. "Wonderful!" she exclaimed, "Lariat, son of thought, I henceforth command you to carry this poem out though the land, and sing of my splendor. You will always be welcome at my court, but do not return to me until all Phonyland knows how beautiful I am. I shall reward your good service with my favor. Should you fail me though, I will become cross, and my anger will rain down."

Lady Faire knew that if there was one thing a princess should be good at, it's promising unspecified and mysterious favors. And especially, she had to be good at leading boys on. That was the best way to get stallions to do anything. Let them think what her favor means.

Larry was happy the filly liked his poem, she seemed to glow with joy. That was exactly what he had wanted. His words to make others happy. But...then she demanded he go and spread the poem about her to others. Well that was all well and good but he had told his father he would only go to the park and then come home. He wasn't allowed to wander too far without Honeysuckle's knowledge.

"Ah my lady, I would be most happy to spread the word of your beauty but alas I must keep to a promise I made my father. I gave my word as a bard that I would only venture to this area, for inspiration and relaxation, then journey back to our humble abode," he gave a small bow hoping she wouldn't be mad. After all he liked her and enjoyed the idea of being part of a court. In his father's books a royal family always had their favorite poet. "So for now I must remain and continue my penmenship, in hopes that one day I will be the worlds greatest poet!"

But the idea of a favor did intrigue him. What kind of favor could the filly bestow on him? Perhaps it was a magical favor, using her unicorn type magic. Or maybe she would gift him with something; a new journal to write his poetry in! Oh how exciting. He would have to work out a way to spread his poem around.

Well, it seemed like this was a dead end option for gaining princess-like status. At least for today it was. But if he was going to be the world's greatest poet, it might be handy to have him in her pocket for that eventuality.

"My kind bard," she said with words laden with honey, "I would not mean for you to forsake your family for me today. I understand what it means to keep faith to your house, and it is a noble characteristic for one to have. But swear to me that when you rise in stature as a poet that you do not forget your Lady, your inspiration." Lady Faire smiled sweetly, and gave him a kiss on the forehead.

"Absoultely my Lady!" he puffed up at the kiss on the forehead. "I shall sing of your beauty to all that see my work. You will be the queen of my stories, the beauty of my scenery, and the inspiration of my art!"

He gave a final bow before going back to his work, even more inspired than before. He was going to have the favor of a queen, a real one. Just like in his father's books! He was going to be the royal bard! He just knew it! But he needed to practice so he would be even better than he was now.

"So to this I bid thee farewell. And pray that one day I shall be graced with yoru presence again," he bowed graciously and kissed her hoof again.
