His books were getting old and dull. The paperbacks were read so many times that their spines were starting to split. It hadn't helped Glasere had inherited them from his parents, either. The older mystery novels were better than the junk written now-a-days, and it was hard to find the older things. It made the boil's inner detective weep over how much of the book revolved around some kind of romance. Yes, the others had romance in it, but it wasn't the focus of the story. The focus of the story was actually the detective going around and solving murder mysteries, or theiving mysteries.

So little books kept him on the edge of his seat anymore, he decided to go into a different genre of books. For that, he ended up in the library. He hadn't been here before, but he did know where it was. So, he grabbed one book from a few different genres and sat down at a table by himself near the back corner. He didn't want to be a bother to anyone, and he knew the air around him was cold. The last time he was around other boils and ghouls was in the Movie Club and that one, Danny, practically forced him to the back of the club and then tried to out him through the door.

Danny, right now, was on his list of things to avoid. That ghoul could go set herself on fire for all he cared. He wouldn't be helping her out any time soon. Ugh, that had put him in a bad mood the rest of that movie. It was a good movie, too.

Though one ghoul did pop into his mind when he remembered it. The one ghoul everyone called Riley. She didn't seem to like it towards the end. He didn't know why either. They all seemed to look at her when the things got turned to stone. It was like his own mystery right there, figuring out just what happened to her. He hadn't seen her before this, so he couldn't just ask her about it. Perhaps if he saw her later on, he'd ask her if she was alright. Maybe she'd tell him.

It was an itch that needed to be scratched; knowing what happened to the ghoul. Letting his brows knit, the boil sighed and opened the romance book he had grabbed off the shelf. Why not, he thought at the time. It might be good.

He got halfway through the first chapter before realizing he was going to check it out. Interesting.

There were often times in one's life when thinking of someone seemed to summon them forth, as if the power of thought alone could lure a person closer, to where they needed to be. Riley didn't believe in such superstitious nonsense, despite the fact that she relied heavily on the psychosomatic in order to assist her in her never-ending, goal oriented lifestyle. If asked, she would deny up and down that such a phenomenon could ever exist without actual manipulation of the brain - which, of course, was always a possibility.

And yet there she was, walking down the next aisle across from Glasere, the moment he'd had his passing thought about her. She didn't see him, since she'd continued to walk past, and quickly out of sight. The moment was lost as quickly as it had been found.

Two minutes later, she re-emerged from behind the books, two shelf aisles down, with a book in her hands. Each step was full of purpose, as she moved directly into one of the soft, single seats nearby, sat down, and opened up her book to begin. But Glasere's presence was visible now, and she almost immediately looked back up, laid her gaze on him, and then tilted her head to the side in a friendly nod. Her expression softened.

Good day.

Greeting given, her eyes returned back to the book.

Movement caught his attention and he raised his eyes to the ghoul he'd been thinking about. The boil shook his head, amused that she seemed to appear just as he wondered about her. An amusing thought floated through his head that she would be one of the best ones suited for a library, considering she couldn't speak directly, but with her mind. It had unnerved him at first, but he'd experienced on the DETH field trip, so he didn't completely go insane from it when in the movie club with her.

He went back to his book until he felt her watching him and looked up in time to see he expression and the nod. Then those words floated through his head. Well, this ghoul seemed friendly, and he had been oddly worried about her. Normally the ice monster wouldn't bother being worried about someone he'd just met, but something about how disturbed she was at the movie compelled him to talk to her. He was curious.

So, he got up with his pile of books and moved to stand in front of her and tapped the table lightly with the edge of a book. "Good day," he whispered, like anyone else who talked in a library. "Can I sit here?" It was clear he wanted to talk to her, but he didn't want to be rude and just sit down without at least asking her. If she said no, he'd sit down anyway, simple as that.

When the boil came to her table, she lowered her book just enough to see him, and then put it down on her lap entirely. Her legs crossed in a professional manner, and the book rested open, on her knee. Of course, by all means. She gestured with one hand, offering him the closest seat. A moment passed as she studied his face, before the light of recognition sparked. Aha. We attended Movie Club together. I knew I recognized that handsome face. Please, do sit. She lifted her facial features up, clearly meant to be a smile if there had been a mouth to do it with. We've never formally met, have we? Her hand unfolded out to meet him, with long, clawed fingers. My name is Riley.

Sitting down when she said yes, he crossed his own legs and put his books to the side of him, on the table. Before he could say anything, the recognition kicked in for her and he smirked when she said he was handsome. Well, he certainly wasn't going to deny that. Uller did consider himself rather handsome, and within good reason. He'd come from a very handsome family. His mother was a beautiful ghoul, therefore, he would be handsome.

Yes, he thought very highly of himself. "Ah, now I have a name to go with that unforgettable, beautiful face," he said, returning the compliment as he extended his hand to hers. He would have kissed her hand, had he felt like like, but instead, he squeezed it and offered a small shake.

"I'm Uller," he said simply, a smile on his features. He returned the smile and chuckled. "I have to admit, I was thinking about you a moment before you showed up. I was curious about what happened in the Movie Club. You seemed terribly upset." Well, that was blunt as a butter knife.

Riley's view of herself matched Uller's in its height, so his compliment was well taken, and not surprising in the least. The shake was matched sturdily, and she set her hand back down on her knee when it was done. Both of her eyebrows shot up at his admittance, but when he explained why he had been thinking about her, the entire ruse of calm capability fell.

Riley looked entirely vulnerable for all of a moment as the memory returned to her, but she shut it down instantly. Her face turned flat and emotionless as quickly as it came.

Was I? Her voice sounded careful. I didn't realize I had reacted in such a way. I was a bit disturbed by some of the movie, but movies are meant to elicit emotions in people. I assumed it was an acceptable response. Did I truly act so rashly that it caught your attention?

"I wouldn't call it rash. You were the only one who seemed truly disturbed by the ending," he said simply. He put his hands on the table in front of him, watching the ghoul with interest. Uller had heard whispering of Riley's name, but he never inquired as to why there was talk about her. He assumed it was from events before he enrolled. He still didn't know a thing about events that took place before him. Prom, deaths, drama, none of it. Why bother asking about what didn't involve him. That is, until he felt the discomfort from this ghoul.

"However, in general, you caught my attention. With the talking with your mind, and what not." Not that he was judging. He watched her flat expression, looking for clues as to what she was feeling. "Honestly, that was my first movie. I've watched plays enacted, but never movies."

He was drawling out his words, sounding nearly uninterested. His expression, however, said otherwise. It really was none of his business, so if she didn't tell him now, he wouldn't pry anymore. The subject would simply be changed to the book she was reading, or something else like that that would get him some insight to if they had any common interests.

Riley's gaze shifted from Uller, to the table, and back again, a few times while he spoke. Her attempt to keep her eyes on the boil as he talked seemed to flounder every so often. Finally, she looked him straight in the eye, and her eyes crinkled slightly. It wasn't necessarily the ending that disturbed me. She'd never seen the boil before, but that didn't mean she knew how long he'd been there. I hope it's safe to assume you are new to Amity? I am as well, in a way. I've been here quite a while, but I remember none of it. You see..

Here she paused, and gave him a critical look. How much do you know of the phenomenon called Hunters, my friend?

"New? Yes. I'm fairly new. I've only been here a few weeks," he admitted, rubbing his chin with his hand. Those white brows went up as she said she didn't remember him and he nodded. Uller'd been getting that a lot, honestly. One such as himself isn't easily forgotten, or so he thought. He was one of a kind in this school, it would seem. Which meant more ghouls and boils should shower him in adoration and admiration. If he'd seen himself through their eyes, he know he would. However, that was a given.

The word Hunters brought him back to her attention and he blinked a little more, tilting his head. He'd only heard of them in passing. "I've never really known much about them. I haven't bothered to prey into them," he stated seriously, his brows knitting. "Humans, I think? Is basically all I recall of them."

Hopefully they were different than the hunters he lured to their deaths back home.

They're humans. Most of us only knew of them as stories, legends, fictional characters made up by our superiors to scare us into submission. They're not the typical usage of the word, as well. She leaned in, and her eyes slit. After all, I am a hunter. But I am not a Hunter. The emphasis on the word was thick, and lingered in the thought she placed in Uller's mind. It remained there a moment too long, before vanishing like all the others.

These are humans that bond with weapons made from our kind. Made from our kind. Another emphasis was placed on those words. And they fight us, they capture us to turn us into more weapons, or they use us for their own sick, twisted experiments.

She leaned back, and recrossed her legs. In other words, my darling, they are our mortal enemy. Emphasis on the mortal.

He listened to her carefully and let his brows knit. He understood what she meant when she said she wasn't a Hunter, but a hunter. The thick emphasis helped so he didn't feel like he was understanding wrong. However, she spoke again and let his brows knit and looked appalled. Weapons made from their kind? Using Halloween citizens against fellow citizens? What kind of minds did they have to do that? He looked like he was going to faint, or at least choke something. He was shocked and wanted to throttle the next human he saw.

Yes, yes, not all humans were the same, that's what the DETH field trip taught him, but he seriously couldn't believe what she was saying. She gave no evidence of lying, though. Why would she? They'd just met.

Thinking, his brows knit at that as he sank back in his chair, letting his hair fall out of place and a frown crease his lips. "I see..." Wait, that didn't answer his question though. He had a feeling she'd get to it in time. But he was impatient. "So, what do Hunters have to do with the movie? As horrible as they sound, I don't quite see a connection just yet."

The story is long, and I wanted to explain it's origins before I got to that, Riley murmured, sitting back in her chair as the topic returned to something discomforting. You see, the Hunters are responsible for many atrocities to our kind. One of which was the annihilation of own of our faculty, Red. In a similar, and yet much smaller scale, they have, ah, infected some of us with a corruption called Insanity. Her eyes crescented, but there was no mirth within them. The grey stripes you see all over my skin are not native to my culture. They are a sign that I have this infection, which we assume is yet another plot developed by the Hunters to destroy us. We don't.. have proof of that yet.. Here, she paused, and an unsettled look came over her. She'd always blamed the Hunters for everything - and why not? They were clearly the real enemy. But the Insanity wasn't just affecting Halloweentown anymore.. what if..

Blinking as she re-focused and got back on topic, she brushed the thought away so she could continue. This infection, at it's strongest stage, can kill as it did our Professor Red. And, in a similar faction, me. Her hand pressed against her chest as she gestured to herself, and then slowly drifted to press against the hollow hole her shirt covered, in the middle of her chest.

Her voice became very quiet, and the inflection sounded tender, and raw, in her thoughts. The infection turns us to stone. We were solid, dead, until the bogeys created a method to pull us back into the world of the living. But for a time.. for a long time, I was a silent slab of inanimate stone. Her eyes had unfocused, as she spoke, but now they flickered back up to Sergio. Just like the creatures in the movie.

He watched her expression as she talked in his mind. Of course Uller had noticed the stripes, but he'd just assumed they were part of her normal skin. Not an infection. Unconscionably, he pulled back when she said the first infection and rubbed his arms. He felt dirty all of a sudden. It was kind of rude, yes, but sick people weren't something this boil could handle very well. Though, he didn't wrinkle his nose at the thought of being infected. That would have been more rude than pulling away. Despite this, however, Uller's expression offered no sort of sympathy. He kept it schooled so he didn't end up wrinkling his nose and looking completely grossed out.

Wait. She'd died? She looked all in one piece. However, when she pushed her hand against her chest like that, he paused and let his brows knit. She was hollow there? His looks shifted to one of concern, worry, and sympathy all at once. There was an anger boiling in his stomach at these hunters. They sounded like they were on high horses and out to put Halloween to extinction. He would not allow that.

Her next words put a grip on his heart and squeezed. At least they had a cure now. Sighing softly, he nodded and sat back. He'd leaned in as he listened to her, after the initial shock of her being infected wore off.

"Ah... I ... see now." His voice was quiet, thoughtful even. His expression was serious and he looked down to his blue hands. They had clenched into fists on the table by now and he uncurled them and laid them flat. The wood was warm under his hands, if only because he was cool to the touch. Now he was going to change categories in books. He needed to learn more history about this school and any other Hunter related tragedies that had happened.

"Thank you for sharing," he said, sighing again. "I'll do my best to bone up on Hunters. If it comes to my turn in the club, I'll be careful with my selection. For you." He gave her something of a smile before running a hand through his hair.

Riley gazed at the boil carefully, a heavy moment of silence falling as she regarded him, before her eyes softened and crescented in lieu of a smile. That's very kind of you, she uttered quietly. And yes, that is a good idea. The more you know, the safer you are. The best sources of knowledge are those who have had direct contact with the enemy, I've found. It is why I know what I do, despite having lost my memory after my death. Many strong, caring individuals have come to me and shared their wealth of knowledge and memories in order to help me recover what was lost. So simply talking to one of them, Amrita, Malodore, Shun, etcetera.. has been truly enlightening.

"I'll start to ask about it," he said, still speaking in quiet terms. He was trying not to flip out and go try to strangle someone. Shaking his head again, the stag brought a hand to his eyes and rubbed slowly before sighing. Well, this was just full of heavy information, wasn't it? Slowly, the boil rose and took his books. He'd borrow these and return them when he felt his brain had settled in all the information. "Thank you for sharing your story... I think I should go.... let all of this sink in." He looked her over again, brows knitting before bowing slowly.

"Until next time?"
