"Really?" The word was not uttered with the intonation of surprise or inquisition. "You really expect -me- to believe that?" The tone was laced with exhasperation and teamed with folded arms and a raised eyebrow. Yes a certain goddess was -not- amused.

"Yes of course, it is the latest in technology. You look like a woman who knows her stuff. Yours for two hundred." The man waved the small device in front of her and grinned. "It's a coded comunicator, you type in the numbers and it sends a message."

Cosine reached out and quickly took the thing from the man's hands, she eyed it for a moment and looked back at him.
"It's a scientific calculator."

The man blinked and looked down at his hands.
"yeah, yeah man I know. A ... yeah whatever. Claci-thingy. All yours for three hundred."

"It's not a communicator, it's a device for performing arithmatic plus trigonometric, statistical, logarithmic, binary logic capabilities. Probably worth about five. If I see you trying to sell any more of these for more than that I will beat you to death with one. Now get out of my sight." To signal that she was done being pestered she looked down at the calculator and smiled.

Owned.

Seriously, anyone with a brain would not have believed that... Or at that was what Xander believed. Was this planet truly this low tech, or was the mam simply out to con people ? That was hard to tell. He only bothered had bothered to come out of Nurvus to do odd jobs in order to keep up on food and smokes.

Smokes were important.

"This is strange..."

Xander blinked, flicking some ashes away from his cigarette as he looked down at the watch-like device on his wrist. "What, Izzy ? Surprised that there's scumbags in every colonized planet known to existence ?"

"Your attempt at sarcasm is noted, Xan, but you know what I mean. The woman. There is nothing quite like her in my databases."

"And i'd remind you your databases are still scrambled." That was true. Even with the sky deciding to finally return, they still could not contact Zelan. Or anything else, for that matter. "I assume you want me to go investigate, through."

"Well, she might know what happened. It isn't like you've been able to puzzle out anything yourself, wondershot."

"Your attempt at sarcasm is noted." Xander rolled his eyes, then finally tossed his smoke in the trash. "Fine, then."

It was easy enough to cut through the crowd to the woman - whom he had to admit was... a little stranger from up close than he had been able to make out from a distance. "Idiots will be idiots, hn. Does people here seriously can't tell the difference in between a calculator and a communicator so reliably that this dude can rip them off easy ?"

Xander was not renowned for being a smooth operator.

Cosine looked from her new treasure up to the voice. Its owner was tall, Ankou tall. The man's question made her smirk.
"Mostly not. Though there are people here from many worlds and realms, some would not know a calculator and may be desperate enough to wish that it was a communicator." The goddess shrugged and tucked it into her bag. "For every lost soul living here there's another ready to exploit them."

"That makes sense." He certainly would have given a lot for a working communicator, right now. The only difference in between him and these people would be that he would not so easily be duped. Not only was Zelan's technology highly developed, but he was on top of the technological game. Or had been, once. It had been years, he could tell that much.

"Were you looking for something yourself, or did you just happen to spot a douchebag being a douchebag ?" He could not help being a little curious.

Douchebag ... that was a new one ... or was it? It sounded like the kind of thing David might have said ... or Adrian? her brief meeting with him had been peppered with such words.

"I was wandering the market, just looking when I spotted a moron being a moron. And an object I was interested in. I have not seen a calculator in a long while. Most electronic devices have rusted to nothing. "Have you just arrived here?"

"You could say that." The satellite had crashed a few years ago, as far as he could puzzle at, but he had only recently awoken from statis to step outside, so to say.

"To be more exact." A somewhat robotic-sounding voice echoed from Xander's wristband. "Nurvus has crashed onto this planet approximately five of your years ago. My systems have been offline for most of this time, however."

"Don't remember asking ya, Izzy."

"You weren't getting to the point, Xan. It is considered rude to keep a lady waiting."

"This is why you don't program your AIs to sentience." He chuckled, proving that he was more amused than bothered. "Anyway, Izzy's right. I was in statis most of this time. I have no idea what happened, but im hoping to figure it out."

Really, the sooner Nurvus was back to orbiting Zelan, the better... If the damage was not already irreversible.

"Stasis." Cosine repeated, a little amused by that thought. "You must be feeling quite confused. I was in stasis myself for a time." She studied the man a moment and looked to the watch on his wrist. A computer? That was certainly interesting.
"Well, a lot has happened. Destruction of epic proportions. Many worlds have been destroyed, people displaced. This." She gestured to the large building beyond the market. "Is the pantheon, home of gods and refugees from just about anywhere you can imagine."
PostPosted: Sun Aug 12, 2012 1:06 pm

"Eh, could be worse." He had never been prone to stasis sickness, thankfully. It would have been a b***h and an half if he had been, given that he was the only remaining individual left on the satellite to have the knowledge to repair Isabella. Even then, he had been trapped inside Nurvus for a good year, at least.

"I was positioned on a satellite. Im not too certain what happened, but when the systems started to fail, I put myself in stasis. When I woke up, we were crashed here. I figure it has to do with the sky having been gone when I woke up."

Wait, wait. "Gods, hn." Superb. Sounded like a particular radar he would have to dodge - races claiming to be gods were always trouble.

"Contact with the known planet in my database is still interrupted. I have no idea if my database are corrupted beyond repair, or if it mean that these worlds have been destroyed, or have not recovered means of communication through space."

Xander frowned. Isabella was quite talkative to this woman... Usually she was content to leave him to talk to people.

Cosine listened to them both and considered herself intrigued. A man who had managed to dodge gehenna, still he would have to learn what had happened and how to deal with the fall out.
"Either is possible. Civilisations that relied on technology have found themselves forced back to the stone age. I have been trying to figure out how to get a computer up and running for some time, with the help of engineers and those who once worked on them. Yet we have not had much success. I think you should prepare yourself for the worst regarding your home planet. Even if it has not been destroyed I very much doubt it is anything like the place you left."
PostPosted: Sun Aug 12, 2012 1:57 pm

"I see..." Yes, it was obvious the gruff man was not a fan of any of the purposed scenarios, but it seemed that even Xander knew better than to shoot the messenger.

"Then it's doubly important to return Nurvus on orbit... The satellite helped control and regulate the climate of our world." This woman was a smart cookie - he had no doubt that she would understand exactly what he feared. Which was good, because he certainly did not want to talk about it.

"What is it that you seek to do with a computer ? My databases may be partly corrupt, but thanks to Xander I am operational at the very least."

What the hell ?! "Izzy ! That's not what we're here for !"

"Yes, I am quite aware we should not be here at all, Xan. But until the satellite's motors can be repaired, and fuel acquired, we are stuck here. Helping others will make them more willing to help us, or have you been alone in seclusion for so long that you have forgotten the basics of society ?"

...Ergh. "Seriously, Izzy, what the hell are you parsing here that you arn't telling me ?"

Cosine could not help but smirk as the computer berrated her human. She liked her.
"It's not really all that important. Before ... everything went wrong i had promised a friend that I would aid him with a database for the great library of the Pantheon. Though, I will not lie ... if we could get one up and running then perhaps we can start others and help get people moving towards normality."

She glanced at the man.
"Xander? That is your name I assume? We can reward you for your help, perhaps aid you in an easier route home? We have star ships and captains within the walls of the Pantheon." She smiled a little. "I am Cosine." She left her title for the moment, something told her he would not believe her.

So these guys did have spaceships still. Operational or not was up for debate... But he knew computers, not motors. Those asleep were likewise not engineers, or he would have awoken them a long time ago. As it was, he saw no need to do so - he had promised to awaken them only when things were right again, or when he had no other option.

As it was, Xander still had options.

"Right. Izzy ?"

"Depending on the size of the database you wish to create, I should be able to keep that information for you. It should likely be moved to another machine upon our departure, however, as the distance will hinder smooth operations. Zelan is on the other side of the solar system from this planet, if my current location of Gaia is correct."

He really, really was not sure about this - but what else could he do ? "Fine. I'll see what I can do then. If we can manage to get a machine working in that library you speak of, then we can have Izzy act as a server and host the information proper."

This was certainly very exciting. The goddess looked from man to machine, then back again.
"I have created a programme, in binary with all the information that has been gathered so far. Numbers I am fluent in, converting them to electronics however, I have never tried. Do you have somewhere to stay?" If they were new she imagined not, though they clearly had some kind of space craft nearby. "I can offer you a room. It would be the least I can do for your inconvenience."
PostPosted: Mon Aug 13, 2012 1:54 pm

In binary ? Damn. That was quite interesting in itself. He knew many programming languages, of course, but he had never heard of someone writing in straight up binary.

Well, the world was made of zeroes and ones as far as he was concerned.

"Izzy will probably be able to scan and convert it on her own. Then I can compile the end code." If that didn't work, well, he could whip up something himself. A database would be pretty easy to make - it would be filling it up that would be time-consuming.

....Wait what ? The offer had gone unnoticed until that moment, so focused on the technical that he was. "Uh, there's the satellite." Really, he was fine staying there, really. It was more or less all that he had ever known.

"Well I am sure I can round up some help. I have servants who are very quick to learn." Zeta and Zero certainly were at one with number ... though they were rather busy helping her charge around after crowlings.
"The offer is there, we have food, shelter, safety." an eyebrow raised, perhaps she should tell him about the end of the world they were all waiting for.
"I have an engineer friend who might be able to take a look at your craft for you too. Help you get it functioning again."
