Ariane wanted her vacation. Her long awaited break. However, with the damages on HQ, all vacations had been suspended - she had been doing some repairs in her free time, but it just wasn't enough... Thus, she was on the hunt for some willing, or not so willing, poor, unfortunate soul to help her in fixing up the place.

She might even be grateful. Might being the keyword here.

Right now, Wilson should have been rebuilding. He didn’t know what to start with—the labs with the sleepers, headquarters with the portals (and vacation) or the houses where he had been rooming with Gale and a few others? Maybe the hunter could find a dice to roll and pick for him because he really didn’t know which place to help rebuild. Too bad he couldn’t find dice, and there was no way he was going to turn his Rubik’s cube into a makeshift dice. It was a delicate thing. Multiple squares had already fallen off and miraculously glued back on.

He sat on the ground, his back against a crumbled wall while his colorful cube clacked as he spun the squares into place. When Wilson looked up he noticed another death hunter. She was familiar. He tried to remember her name as he lazily waved. “Ariane?”

"Willlllllson," The one named Ariane grinned the moment she saw him, and in that instance, probably looked like a vulture who had just spotted a fresh corpse on the vast African Savannah. She made a beeline straight for him, stopping to lean over her fellow Deathie, one arm resting on the wall as she briefly eyed the beaten up Rubik's cub, "That has sentimental value to you or something?"

Her eyes remained on the object for a while longer before she shifted her attention to the hunter, "Anyway, you're just the person I wanted to see." That was a blatant lie; to be honest, she was thinking along the lines of 'anyone will do', "I could use a hand with rebuilding the main HQ. You up for it?" As much as she didn't want to give him much of a choice, giving him that chance to say 'yes' willingly would make him work harder on his own terms, right?

And she really wanted the main HQ fixed.

For a second, Wilson could have sworn there had been something unsettling about Ariane and the look on the other hunter’s face. But it must have been his imagination, right? He leaned his head back, skull lightly pressed to the wall so he could look up at Ariane properly. “Sort of. It was one of the things I packed before I left…home.” Wilson looked down at the cube, shifting the squares a couple more time before he finished with a flower pattern. “My dad kind of liked this stuff.”

Genuine surprise lit up his face. “Really?” Oh, rebuilding the main HQ. Wilson smiled and stood up, brushing dirt off his pants and hands. “Sure. I was planning on helping out with that eventually anyways.”

"I see," Ariane replied, looking at the Rubik's cube again when her attention was directed there, "It was pretty popular in my school for a period of time. Everyone knew how to solve it. There were guides and formulas posted all over the internet... Not everyone could do more than just solve the cube though."

There was a compliment hidden in there. Somewhere.

"Fantastic," She grinned, putting a hand on one hip, "Would you rather lay down some bricks, paint a wall, or plaster up some walls?" She didn't have much of a preference, since everything needed something done.

“Really? Huh.” Wilson held the cube tightly in one hand. “Didn’t really catch on at my school. Too nerdy, I guess,” he chuckled. He grinned, tossed the toy into the air once before sliding it into his jacket pocket. “They probably never liked it as much as I do.”

“Uhhh.” The man cocked his head and scratched his skull. “I don’t have much of a preference, to be honest. I mean, well, I guess I could plaster up the walls?” Ariane could have told him to dig a hole and then fill it up again. Wilson wouldn’t have minded.

"Too nerdy? Heh, once the cool kids-" Ariane held up two fingers on each hand, and drew two inverted commas in the air as she rolled her eyes, "-start doing it, even the nerdiest things become cool." She never did enjoy High School, especially since her parents and school were both all about academics. Sometimes, she had to wonder if her parents were secretly Asian.

"Let's plaster up the walls then," She wished that she had asked him to dig a hole and fill it back in, but she did not. So they would have to do the boring tasks instead, "If we're lucky enough, someone else would have left out their tools-" She stopped suddenly, narrowing her eyes at a hawk - yeah it's really called that - laying on top of a bucket, functioning as a sort of lid; beside it were several trowels.

"Yup, we're lucky," She grinned, having removed the hawk to find the bucket half filled with plaster. She grabbed two trowels, using one of them to scoop plaster onto the hawk before holding it out for Wilson to take, "Now, all we have to do is fine a wall that requires patching up~"

“True,” he agreed with a shrug, “I guess the cool kids at my school didn’t like it enough.”

Wilson trailed behind Ariane, hands buried in his pockets. “Perhaps, but I kind of doubt someone left out—“ He leaned over to the side to follow her gaze. He remained silent for a few seconds before chuckling and shrugging his shoulders. “I stand corrected.” Wilson took the hawk from Ariane. “Thanks.”

“A wall, soooo…” His voice trailed off as he looked around before half-nodding to a partly-finished wall nearby. “That one? Looks like they never finished.” Wilson walked over to the wall, hawk in hand. He was about to smother the wall with plaster, but that was until he remembered hawks were used to just carry plaster and not apply it (which was a real darn shame). After a few moments of staring and fumbling, Wilson eventually acquired a trowel from Ariane and began to cover the wall with plaster.

This was strangely calming.

“So, how’ve you been?” Always small talk, never not small talk.

Ariane worked on patching up a some tears in the plaster of the wall, where it was damaged enough for the inner wall layer to peek through, right beside the hole Wilson was working on. From some of the damages that she had seen, it was amazing that the building was still standing at all; it felt like most other ordinary buildings would have collapsed or crumbled by now... She paused, looking at the plaster on the hawk, "You think they reinforced the building materials with runic technology too?"

It sounded highly probable to her.

"Fine enough," She replied, more focused on the wall in fornt of her than on the hunter beside her, "I'm still alive, after all, and I still have body parts intact~" She paused for a moment, turning to look at the hunter beside her, "And yourself?"

He spread the trowel across the wall. Once Wilson smoothed out the bumps, he stopped and looked at Ariane. His glance turned sideways as he considered the question. “Probably. Plus, they usually have the shields up also. It’s just that during the invasion they somehow went down.” He considered Deus to be a pretty safe place, considering its reclusive location, but this was the second time they had to buckle down and clean up the messes left behind. “I wonder how many times these buildings had to be repaired. How old are these buildings?” he mused while he scooped some more plaster onto his hawk.

“There’s always that,” chuckled Wilson. “I would definitely not want to have stayed a crystal statue forever.” He even shuddered as he recalled the sensation of the blood beneath his skin crystallization, the crystals coating his body slowly. “Pretty good, I guess. Just have to truck along like usual.”

"Yeah, the shields were definitely tampered with... And to make it worse, they managed to keep them down," Ariane sighed, working on smoothing out the plaster; those workers back on the "mainland" made it look so easy... But that was all a lie, especially when it came to removing the excess plaster off the wall, "Who knows? Probably almost as old as this war we're currently fighting."

Heh. For sure older than Caelius... Who is ooooooooolllllllllddddddddd.

"Ugh, yeah," She frowned; although she really did not mind dying back then, having already accept the fact that being a hunter is suffering, Ariane did not appreciate the feeling of her flesh and blood turning into crystals. As an afterthought, she added with a chuckle, "Although I was a pretty fabulous statue. Sadly, the world will just have to go on with one less piece of artwork."

Wilson nodded his head. “Yeah. That part really worries me. I really hope it took them a lot of effort to take the shields down because I definitely don’t want another invasion.” A sigh to match Ariane’s. He tacked on in a mutter, “Especially after my birthday. Best present ever.

He slathered on some more plaster and scraped his trowel across the wall. How long would plastering a wall take? Probably a while.

“You think so?” Pausing his work, Wilson stepped back to look at the battered building. “I don’t think it’s quite that old. I mean, that Excalibur is pretty damn old, right?”

He managed to laugh at her joke. “Too bad I couldn’t see statue you, otherwise I would heartily agree with you. Can’t say I can say the same for myself. I don’t think you can call a statue with a gasmask and robot arms artwork.”

"It was after your birthday?" Ariane asked, raising an eyebrow before giving Wilson a pat on his back, "That must had sucked balls." Speaking of which, "Yeah, Excalibur is probably old as balls." She hadn't used 'balls' in so many sentences, within such a short amount of time, in a long while; it felt pretty liberating.

"Yeah, well, weapon aside, you have a pretty cute butt-" And then, as if to prove her point, she patted Wilson on his behind, flashing him a grin, easily interpreted as her 'I regret nothing' grin, "-so I think you qualify as artwork."

He laughed softly as he felt the pat on the back. “I like to think of it as a belated present.” A rather sucky present, but a present nonetheless. “You know, if Excalibur is so old, do you think he looks like an old raggedy man by now?” He paused before he decided to tack on, “A nice, old raggedy man.”

Wilson didn’t know how to react at the butt pat. At first he froze, then he curiously cocked his head. Then the hunter stared at Ariane with wide, confused eyes. “Thank you? I think.” Still looking befuddled—maybe even traumatized as he recalled Allan’s anime convention and oh god all the gropes—he slowly turned back toward the wall and continued to add to the thin layer of plaster.

"In that lecture, wasn't it said that Excalibur was some kind of Fae?" Ariane shrugged, stroking her chin with a thoughtful look, "I bet they don't age that fast... So maybe he looks like some nice middle aged man instead. Merlin's the old raggedy man. A vengeful, ugly, old raggedy man. I bet he has pockmarks all over his face." Yeah, she wasn't so happy about his attempt to turn everything into crystal, even if she made one fabulous piece of artwork.

The trainee eyed Wilson, narrowing her eyes at his reaction; she was trying to decide to put it under 'awkward' or 'adorable'. Maybe a new category called 'awkwardly adorable'. After that pause, she chuckled, "You're welcome."
