Ardhi walked alone on the out skirts of the Kusini Mwenzi pride. He had been hanging around there for a while now. Not quite sure if he wanted to stay in the pride where his brother was or if he wanted to move on and find a place where he might not be a burden on anyone. However for poor Ardhi not being a burden was not an option no matter where he went. Anyone he met felt pity on him simply because of his seizures. He hated being a burden on others even when he was with his parents he had hated being a burden on them but they had refused to let him leave on his own. His seizures could leave him vulnerable for days at the longest and for a few hours at the least. Even in just a few hours though he could be hurt by another lion or even a creature as small as a wild dog. Once he was down there was no way he could fight back.

In the blue sky above a small form seemed to blend in to the blues above it. Seeing the small avian would be almost impossible even for someone who was looking for her. She had her eyes set on the big black form below her. He was the reason she was here. She had heard of him and had strong intentions to become of assistance to him. She wasn’t planning on taking no for an answer either. He was not going to have a choice in the matter. She’d made a promise to his father to help him and it had taken her forever to finally find him after he disappeared from the pride lands. She felt guilty for not coming to him before he’d left the pride lands but she was here now and she was not leaving any time soon. She circled above him for a few moments before she decided she’d waited long enough and swooped down to land a little ways in front of him.

The sight of the little blue bird landing in front of him brought Ardhi to a hault. He gazed at the bird and for a moment wondered if the bird was injured but he couldn't see anything wrong with the bird. She wasn't holding her wings awkwardly or leaning to one side as though one of her legs were injured. He was still puzzling when the little bird turned and looked him straight in the eye.

Nili as she was named by her mother stared straight into Ardhi’s face with an intense gaze. She ruffled her feathers a bit but continued to hold his gaze for several more very long moments and then all of a sudden she dropped her gaze and began to clean a couple of her feathers with her beak while she spoke. “You know Ardhi you are a very difficult lion to locate. I searched for you for days in the pride lands but you were nowhere to be found.” She told him in an almost accusing tone like he knew she was looking for him and had ran off on purpose.
Ardhi was a bit irritated by the way the bird spoke to him. He didn’t even know her but she acted like she was his mother and he was not going to be treated like that by a silly bird. “Pardon me birdie but I don’t think I needed permission from you to leave the pride lands. Who are you anyway and how do you know my name? Have you been spying on me or something?” He asked her getting really suspicious of this little bird now. She knew his name and where he had lived and even managed to find him again after he had left the pride lands. Something about this bird just wasn’t setting with him.
Nili chuckled softly at all of Ardhi’s harsh questions. She hadn’t been sure if Umo had ever told him about her but now she knew for sure that he had kept her a secret so that she could come in at the right time on her own and watch over Ardhi with few problems. Only she had screwed up and lost Ardhi so now things weren’t going to go nearly as smooth as she would have liked. “My name is Nili Mto and I know your name because your father Umo told it to me. He asked me to keep an eye on you when he was still alive. I made a promise to him I would stick by your side and keep you company after his death. Sadly though I didn’t keep my complete promise as I was supposed to have gotten with you when you were in the pride lands, by the rumors I’ve heard you really could have used my companionship at that time. I do apologize to you Ardhi and wish to say that I will be here from now on at your side should you ever need me.”
Ardhi looked displeased with every bit of information Nili had just given him. He was not looking for a companion not in the bird sense anyway. He was a bit hurt by his father’s actions of sending this silly bird to watch him like he was a little child. Would he never be able to just be free? His hopes of being treated like he wasn’t going to die any minute were dwindling. “And if I don’t want you here? Then what happens?” He snapped at Nili. He was sitting in a very angry state at the moment and was tensing up to chase the bird and if he caught her she surely would not have a future once he was through with her.
Nili was a bit hurt by Ardhi’s words but she had made a promise and she wasn’t going to break it even if it meant watching from afar. “I’m sorry Ardhi I made a promise to your father. I’m never going to leave.” Nili’s words threw Ardhi into an angry rage and he lunged at her. Nili took flight as quickly as she could only barely missing getting trapped in Ardhi’s jaws and shook like a rag doll. Nili was saddened by the turn of events but she would do her best to keep an eye on Ardhi and possibly someday become his friend.
