User ImageBackwards was sitting in the shade near the ocean, grooming herself. It was noon, and too hot to be out in the sun. It was the perfect time to nap, catch up with grooming or just sit and talk in the shadow. The soft sound of the ocean was soothing, and she let her mind wander while working on a stubborn tangle in her tail tuft. Her siblings were all grown up now, and most had found their place in the pride. As lords and ladies they didn't really have to take up a trade, but it was always useful to learn at least one anyway. Backwards had tried a little bit of everything, just to get a feel for the pride dynamics. It felt like her duty as a Lady to know what was going on.

The pride had changed a lot since the time of her birth, and while she had grown up with the change she could feel that the pride as a whole was still finding its feet, so to speak. Perhaps it would be different for her younger siblings. He mother's new litter really drove home the fact that she was an adult now.

Her duties done for the day, Fireheart decided it would be a nice time to take a stroll on the beach as she had missed her morning run. She was finding more and more often that she had to push back her morning rituals until the evening, which was fine by her. It certainly assured she was worn out and ready to sleep, at least. The hunt for the day had been postponed due to the heat, though. They had more than enough food to sustain the pride for a few days, so gathering more wasn't immediately important.

As she approached the beach, Fireheart caught sight of a familiar lioness. She surprisingly didn't run across her siblings fairly often through her day, considering they all were so different and enjoyed doing different things. It was always a treat to sit down and talk with one of her litter mates. She trotted over to the shade where Backwards was laying, grooming herself a bit.

"Good afternoon, sister," she said as she sat down a few paces away from the red lioness. "I haven't seen you around as of late. How have you been?" She crossed her paws, content to forego her run in favor of talking. She'd have the rest of the day to keep up with her work-out routine. She needed to stay in shape as the Hunt Leader, after all.

"I've been good," Backwards said, and gave her tail tuft one last lick, "Did I ever congratulate you for making Head Hunter?"

Fireheart had always been an ambitious sort, and Backwards was proud over her sister. As Lords and Ladies they didn't have to pick a trade, but Fireheart had not only done that - she had excelled at it. The red sister never seemed to show more interest in any particular area. She tried her paw at anything she was offered to learn, but her carefree attitude could make teaching her an annoying task. It wasn't that she lacked interest, she was just flighty by nature and it often rubbed others the wrong way. One day she might find her true calling, but until then she had her title to fall back on.

Fireheart shook her head slightly. "I'm not sure that you have, but it's no fault of yours. I haven't seen you since I gained the title."

She had been incredibly proud to receive such a title. It had been her dream since she was a cub to reach this point. There was only one higher rank to reach within the hunting and defending positions in the pride, but it was taken by a very capable lion. Now she got to work with him and learn even more about what it took to keep the pride safe. It was actually kind of alarming how much they relied on the jungle to keep others at bay.

She shifted a little in the sand, a tiny smile crossing her features as a familiar scent caught on the breeze. The beach was a favorite haunt of Vodnitvar, the lion who had caught her eye recently. They had hit it off well after a bit of bumbling embarrassment, and she had high hopes for the future.

"I should probably warn you now that you might have a few nieces and nephews toddling after you in the future," she said, deciding this was as good a time as any to inform her sister. "My partner and I have been trying for cubs for about a month now. Nothing yet, but we're hoping for a litter soon."

"That's great news," Backwards cooed, "But... You're not pregnant now, are you? It doesn't show yet at least."

It was a bit freaky to think about her siblings being mature enough to think about starting families. They were certainly old enough, and they had their gypsy names. Heck, mother had even had a new litter. But it didn't help Backwards shake the feeling that she was still too young for all this. It was all to easy to hide behind her Lady title when s**t got too serious. Ah, she could just try to be the cool big sister, and later the cool aunt. Someday she might have to grow up, but for now she'd just fake it and hope no one noticed she wasn't really as grown up as the other grown-ups.

Fireheart shook her head again, pawing at the ground lightly in front of her in amusement. "No, not yet. You know how hard it is to have cubs sometimes. It can take months before something actually happens. We're hoping for something soon, though."

Fireheart, like Backwards, had just grown into her adult skin, but Vodnitvar was certainly no spring chicken. His leg also gave him troubles from his old battle wound, so they had to be careful when doing...things. Sometimes it was just too much and they had to stop. Walking around was painful enough for the blue lion, after all.

"So, how have you been?" she asked, turning the subject from herself to her sister. "I haven't seen much of you the past few months. I barely remember seeing you at all since we were cubs, really." Of course, that was her own fault. She always liked to branch off from her siblings to go be on her own. Now that she was older, she felt like she could get along with them better since they (hopefully) had matured. There was nothing wrong with cubs, but their silliness sometimes nibbled on her last nerve.

Backwards laughed at that. It was true that they were an independent bunch. The twins liked to stick together, but the rest of the siblings were all over the place. Perhaps she should make a point to keep up with them, but... Well, Fireheart was easy enough to keep track of since she aimed high and succeeded in what she wanted to accomplish. And now she was trying for cubs. Backwards had no doubt in her mind that this venture would also be successful.

"Psssh," she said, "Now you're exaggerating. I've been around... I'm good I guess. But you've always been the most goal-oriented among us I think. I don't really know what I'm doing half the time… "

It was said in a joking manner, but Backwards sometimes worried about her own lack of direction. She didn’t have to pick a path, but perhaps she ought to. She still held her tail tuft between her front paws and combed it absent mindedly. It was comforting, and it was something she'd enjoyed doing ever since she was little.

Fireheart tilted her head a bit as Backwards continued to speak. Yes, it was true, she was one of the more focused individuals out of their litter, but that made her the odd one out. The whole pride was based on being fun and fancy free, but she was pretty serious. Her drive had gotten her to where she wanted to be, though, so she was pleased with how she had turned out.

"Well, your name isn't Backwards for nothing," she pointed out with a little smile. "Perhaps it's your job to be available for any position at any time. If a new mother needs a nanny, she can call you. Or if we're short on hunters, I can count on you to fill in. A jack of all trades, so to speak."

She reached out to paw at her sister's tail as she would do when they were cubs, mussing the hair on the end a bit. "Or, you know. Just lay around. It's nice to do what you want, when you want to do it." She did envy those that had a more relaxed lifestyles at times. Going all the time was exciting, but sometimes she'd like a break.

Backwards smiled back as Fireheart displayed another of her gifts. Her sister had a natural talent for making her feel better. It was just like her to turn a perceived flaw into a talent. And she did have a point, Backwards had friends and acquaintances in many places, and she was often called on for assistance when another pair of paws was needed.

"Jack of all trades, hmm? I like that," Backwards mused, and batted playfully at her sister's paw, "Stop that, I'd just fixed it up."

It was said with a smile, and she wasn't really upset. She rolled over on her back in an almost cubbish manner, grinning widely at Fireheart.

"I can force you to relax now and then," she said with a wink, "If you work hard you'll need some serious relaxing too!"

Fireheart smiled a bit as her sister's spirits brightened. She swatted back at her paw before the red lioness rolled over, making her laugh a bit. It was so interesting how they had all aged. Fireheart herself had been quite reckless as a cub, leaping before she looked and acting like she was an adult. She had calmed down quite a bit in her adulthood, looking before she leapt and taking most things into careful consideration. She was still opinionated on certain matters and wouldn't back down from a fight, but she picked her battles far more carefully now.

Backwards, however, was still very cubbish in more ways than just rolling on to her back. She liked to daydream and stroke her tail, help out other lions in need, and spend her days sitting under the trees watching the world go by. There was nothing wrong with that, especially in this pride. It made her sister unique.

"Oh, I'd like to see you try," she challenged with a chuckle. "Although, if anyone were able to do it, I bet it would be you." Being around Backwards gave Fireheart the desire to just...do nothing. She was so fun to talk to and they really had so much to catch up on. Fireheart knew she needed to make time to sit and chat with her sister more.

It was really nice to see her sister take some time off for once. Every time you saw her around, she was busy with something. It couldn't be healthy. A lion needed to sit and relax and think sometimes too. Balance was important. Work and play. Exercise and rest.

"Challenge accepted," Backwards said with a mischievous glint in her eyes, "I'll make you stay here and do nothing useful all morning."

And with that she leapt at her sister in a surprisingly agile move. She could if she wanted to, it was just that she rarely bothered. She hugged around her sister's neck with both front paws, and started to clean her ears, like a friendly but very determined wrestler.

Fireheart laughed a bit as her sister pounced, pinning her down fairly effectively. She let her win for a few moments before rolling from under her paws. As she stood, she gave her a gentle bump to the side of her head with her own.

"As much as I'd love to stay and do nothing all day with you, I do need to go organize the next hunt. Don't want to go hungry, do you?" she teased, ruffling her fur on the top of her head. "I promise, some day soon I'll lay with you on the beach for a while. We can nap and talk about nothing in particular."

She gave Backwards a little wink before turning to head off into the woods, needing to find Riddle Mouth to get instruction from him.

Thank you!

Backwards returned the affectionate head butt. It would have been nice to keep her sister there for a while longer, but she knew she had her duties. She was determined to make her relax more, however. It had worked today after all...

"Let me know if you need another hunter," she called after her sister, "I can always pitch in."

She didn't say it, and it didn't have to be said, but she would do anything for her sister if she asked. And there were some things she'd do without being asked. Backwards might come off as lazy or spacy, but she knew what was important. There was time for work and time for play. Right now, basking in the sun was her first task of the day. She rolled over on her back, melting out until she resembled a red furry carpet.
