Morag waited patiently in the shade of the medical dens for Singh to return, trying her best to appear calm and unruffled when all she wanted to do was fidget with impatience.
With her return from the North, it was high time she got her eye looked at. All the vigorous activity had not caused any bleeding and there was no longer any pain when her face was touched. That's why Singh was here... to give her a look over and finally answer the question as to whether or not that eye had survived her mauling.
She would have scars, she knew that much, but until the eye healed, there was no way to really tell if it worked... after all this time, she wanted to know very badly. Not that it would be the end of the world if she had lost it... she had proven that she could function just as well without it, though relearning her depth perception would take some time. Still... she fervently hoped that was not the case.

Singh had been utterly unaware that so many lions had been gone for the last couple weeks. Or at least, so gone they were on the other side of the mountains to the north. Since he didn't usually leave the medical wards, he didn't really memorize ALL the faces beyond knowing enough by looking at a lion and remembering if they'd react badly to something or not. So as far as he knew, Morag had been out reacquainting herself with hunting.
To say the least, he was surprised to see her waiting for him when he returned from his foray to the south to gather new herbs and roots and the like. The white lion frowned, going over and setting his bag down. "Morag, not out hunting today?" He paused, noticing how dirty her bandages were. "Just what have you been up to...? Those bandages are FILTHY!"

The dark lioness winced as he pointed out the state of her bandages, laying her ears back sheepishly.
"I had to make them not stand out as much, Singh... they made me too visible while I... hunted. Look, I just need you to take a look at my wounds." She said, reaching up to touch her covered face. "They don't hurt at all any more and moving around didn't make them bleed. I want to know if I can finally take off all these bandages."
Dropping her paw, she rubbed her other forepaw with it, feeling suddenly nervous. Only part of it was that he looked ready to deliver a big lecture about taking better care of her injured self, one she had heard all too often of late.
"Its been a month since you looked at them last... I bet they're healed up by now."

The male gave her a critical and hard look, clearly not pleased and very much ready to launch into that lecture. But he bit his tongue, instead walking over. "Okay, I'll spare you the lecture for now. If I don't like what I see under those bandages, then I'll be giving you an ear full.
He took a seat, reaching up and undoing the bandages. As he unwound them, Singh scowled more and more at how absolutely filthy they were. And to make matters worse they STUNK! Of DEATH! "What did you rub INTO them?! They smell like a month-old rotting corpse!" Part of him was afraid to know, actually, if she HAD. "Or am I smelling part of your face decaying because of the dirt you apparently rubbed in?"

Again, she grimaced as he told her how she smelled, her good eye looking away from him. Rotting corpse was probably part of what was on them... but she was not about to tell him that. The trip North was between the Watchers and the Regents... she might consider him somewhat of a potential friend, but that didn't mean she could trust Singh with the tale. It was a hard idea to take in, but now that she was actually trying to work it into her life, the secrecy was prover harder than she had thought.
The comment about her face decaying made her scowl and she bared her teeth at the healer. "I did not rub it into my face, okay? I was careful to keep it OUTSIDE of the bandages. And it served its purpose of keeping me unnoticed. Just... bury them somewhere and let's forget about them."
She sighed as the last of the bandages fell away, feeling strange without their pressure against her face. Slowly, carefully, she worked her jaw to feel if anything were pulling, but nothing was. Her face felt a little tight, but not terribly slow. Feeling anxious, she gingerly tried the eyelid, which thus far had been sealed shut through the healing process. It moved, parting and sliding smoothly. For a moment, all the word was a wash of white, and then slowly colors appeared in fuzzy smudges, which cleared into shapes and then finally... She blinked as she saw Singh's face through the damaged side of her face.
Oh, thanks be to whatever gods watched over her... she could see through both her eyes. She was overcome with unexpected emotion and clenched her jaw shut, afraid she'd break down and either sob like a child or laugh like a lunatic.
(( 1& 2, she kept it. 3 & 4 she lost it. ))

Singh was pleased. The more bandaging he removed, the better the smell. Clearly, whatever the stench was was coming off the bandages themselves, and more the outside than the inner part. He tossed them aside when he was done, before raising a paw and taking Morag's jaw in it so he could turn her face to look at it better. "Looks like it's healed very well..." He watched as she blinked and stretched, then nodded. "It looks good... And the smell was just the bandages, thankfully..." He held his paw up, waving it in front of Morag's face. He then curled down the last toe-finger on his paw as well as his 'thumb', holding the remaining three up. "How many digits am I holding up?"

The lioness tracked the paw with her eyes, though she had a bit of a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
"Three, Singh. And it was only one of my eyes that was injured, the other could see your paw just fine... but yes, I do see three with both eyes. No bluriness, no difference, that I can tell, from the other eye." She couldn't keep the warm satisfaction out of her voice and she didn't even try, a grin soon breaking out on her scarred face.
Today was a good day and she felt lighter than she had in a while... Her dark worry had lifted and she was pleased with the outcome. She could have lived without an eye, just as she would live with her scarring, but it was so much better to have kept her sight. She almost couldn't sit still now, suddenly impatient for him to finish his examination.
"I told you it was just the outside." She said as she grinned.

The medic chuckled. "I just need to make sure, that's all..." He checked her eye a bit closer up, before nodding. "I think the only thing you need to worry about now is get reacquainted with the use of your formerly covered eye in conjunction with the other eye."
Walking to the entryway, he squinted against the sunlight for a moment. Finally, he turned to Morag, going back over to her. He removed his scarf, holding it up. "I think a little exercise is in order... I want you to cover your formerly only good eye with this, and find the following things around the outside of the wards with the other eye..." Sitting down, he held up his free paw, the toes folded. He lifted one for each thing he listed. "The shed exoskeleton of a scorpion, the feather of an eagle, a dead plant, and a small pebble amid the sand drifts against the rock face. The plant should be the easiest one, but the rest are to train your eye to focus again."

Morag resisted the urge to rolls her eyes at the orders from the medic, finding it hard to believe a game of 'I Spy' was going to do more than prove what she had already told him. All she did though was sigh and get to it, covering her unmarked face with his scarf before searching the surrounding area for the items he requested.
She pointed them out as she found them and then settled back on her haunches with a smug little look on her face.
"How was that? I had no issues finding any of them and there is no blurriness or spots of blackness or any trouble focusing." Well, at least he could amuse her, if nothing else. It was sort of nice to have someone around who could make her smile and who she could share this small, but meaningful, achievement with.
